Today's podcast features sports performance coaches Rich Burnett and John Garrish. Rich Burnett is the President and Director of Athletic Development for Triple F Elite Sports Training in Knoxville, TN. He is also the Co-Founder and CEO of Athletic Assessment Technology, known more commonly as Plyomat, and has over 10 years of experience working in high school, and NCAA DI strength and conditioning. John Garrish is the Director of Athletic Development & Performance at North Broward Preparatory School in Coconut Creek, Florida, and the school's Head Track and Field Coach. John was voted the 2022 National High School Strength Coach of the Year by the NHSSCA and has been a two-time guest previously on this podcast, speaking on a variety of plyometric and speed training topics. The standing vertical jump, or “countermovement” test is a very popular method of assessment for athletes and has been for some time. What the standing vertical leap test doesn't tell you, is how fast an athlete gets off the ground, which is generally what matters in sport, more so than how high an athlete can reach. Reactivity is also a general coordination ability where athletes can both anticipate the ground and coordinate the proper muscle activation sequences to rebound themselves back into the air, which is critical for a variety of athletic jumping, throwing, cutting, and overall movement tasks. On today's show, Rich and John will get into how they train reactive ability in plyometrics, with respect to ground contact times, and the function of power that being able to get off the ground quickly provides. We also discuss the differences between double and single-leg reactive strength tests and measurements, and how they correlate to athleticism, as well as the differences between simple plyometric movements based on contact time, versus more complex and coordinated movements, such as skips and gallops. This week's guest on the Pacey Performance Podcast is National High School Strength Coach of the Year, John Garrish. He's the Director of Athletic Development & Performance and Head Track and Field Coach at North Broward Preparatory School in Coconut Creek, Florida. Following the receipt of his prestigious award from the NHSSCA, John is here to talk about coaching younger athletes at high school level, how he first broke into the industry, and some of his own tricks and tips for coaching speed with larger groups. First up, he explains how life works as a high school S&C coach, and how strength and conditioning fits in with the school curriculum in Florida. He moves on to his own strengths and weaknesses as a coach, and discusses how he overcomes any perceived flaws in his technique. This involves how to manage larger groups of athletes, as is the case for many high school coaches. John also gives us his expert insight into the drills and exercises he likes to use in larger groups, including the progressions and regressions to look out for when using banding and hopping. For all this and much more from an award-winning coach, hit the play button now. Many strength and conditioning coaches are doing an excellent job of making a lasting impact on their athletes' lives. In this episode, Garrett Keith, strength and conditioning coach at Westminster Christian Academy in Huntsville, AL, shares how his program has taken steps to be more intentional about every coach on staff looking first for improvement within. By coaching each other, and improving together, their athletes reap exponential rewards.
NHSSCA co-founder Kevin Vanderbush has been a high school strength coach for almost four decades. On this episode, he shares some of the most critical advice he has to offer about working with high school athletes.
Few people have done more to raise the profile of the high school strength and conditioning coach in recent years than Gary Schofield. In this wide-ranging conversation, he shares what it means to him to be a high school strength coach and what's in the works at the NHSCCA, as well as some perspective and wisdom gained over the course of his career.
Faster athletes will cover a multitude of other shortcomings in an athletic program. That's why Lee Weber, the head strength and conditioning and football coach at Rose Hill High School in Kansas, prioritizes training speed in his programming. Not only does Weber make speed a priority, he has invested some serious time into understanding how to train speed optimally. Heavily influenced by the philosophy of Tony Holler's "Feed the Cats," Weber has made huge strides in helping his athletes find another gear on the field, court and track.
Tobias Jacobi fills a lot of roles at Strong Rock Christian School in Locust Grove, Georgia. He takes each of them seriously, including the title of educator, which he embraces in a way that brings both job security and a fresh perspective on his role as a strength coach. As an Associate A.D. and strength coach, he advocates for his athletes and his strength and conditioning program. As the chair of the the Physical Education Department, he speaks the language of an educator fluently, and leverages that knowledge to become a better relationship builder, student of his craft, leader and role model.
