With the Super Bowl fast approaching we decided it was probably time we figured out how American Football and the NFL came about. As two life-long football fans we were pretty surprised to find out how this nationwide and global reaching phenomenon got its very humble start. The first recognized college football game took place just 4 years after the end of the Civil War. The game then would be almost unrecognizable to fans today. Well how do we go from the Ivy League to creating a professional league that is now the most popular and riches sport in America, you just hit that play button and let us take it from there. 

John Heisman led Georgia Tech to some successful seasons on the gridiron. They played in the Rose Bowl and won shortly after he left the school. Sam Heisman is the Founding Head of School at Great Hearts Harveston, the first Great Hearts Academy to break ground in Louisiana.  The newly constructed campus will be opening in Baton Rouge for the 2023-2024 school year.His last name may sound familiar to you and for good reason.  The Heisman Trophy is the most prestigious award in college sports and named after John Heisman, the great great grand uncle of Sam Heisman.  John Heisman was the athletic director of the Downtown Athletic Club, the organization that created the award in 1935 to recognize “the most valuable college football player east of the Mississippi.”  The award was named in his honor after his death in 1936 and broadened to include players west of the Mississippi.  John Heisman had a rich career in college athletics as a football player, a head coach, and an athletic director.Sam Heisman grew up the only boy in a family of six.  Although football was in his namesake, Heisman's favorite sport in high school was basketball.  He wasn't a naturally academic or gifted student.  “I didn't really know what hard work looked like in an academic context until college.  I realized that I had a lot of catching up to do.”He has a great love for poetry. Among his favorite poems are the Aeneid, Paradise Lost, and Sonnet 73. 12/11/17: Former Auburn coach John Heisman on how to fuel like a winner... by It's Pronounced Jordan

Jay Berwanger of the University of Chicago Maroons was honored by the Downtown Athletic Club as the best collegiate football player east of the Mississippi for the 1935 season, which makes him stand as the very first Heisman Trophy winner. Although this would seem to place Berwanger in a line with subsequent winners and NFL legends, really Berwanger stands out to modern eyes for the difference between his game and the modern game. Berwanger didn't even, technically, win the Heisman, as the trophy only was named after John Heisman after his death the next year. Berwanger was known as the "one man football team" for being not just a capable runner at halfback, but also a passer, kicker, punter, and notable defensive player. Berwanger played before face masks, racial integration, or even a significant pro football culture. Although he was selected by the Philadelphia Eagles as the first selection in the first NFL draft, Berwanger never played in the NFL, even after being traded to the Bears. Instead, going into business and seeking to compete in the decathlon in the Olympics, Berwanger would end his football career with winning the Downtown Athletic Club's honor.
