According to a survey published this month by Abacus Data, 65 per cent of Canadians believe the next federal government should increase defence spending. Abacus also found that more than a third of Canadians want party leaders to be talking about national defence and security in this election. This comes as the government says the Armed Forces are well below its target for what it describes as "training, readiness and operational requirements".Our question: Does Canadian military spending need to change? How will it affect your vote?

Larry Ostola speaks with David A. Borys about his book, Punching Above Our Weight: The Canadian Military at War Since 1867. Punching Above Our Weight offers a comprehensive history of the Canadian military, covering 150 years of evolution from a small, poorly equipped militia to a modern, effective force. It highlights key events such as the Red River Resistance, the Boer War, both World Wars, and peacekeeping missions, including the long Afghan conflict. Borys examines crucial battles like Amiens and Operation Medusa, and important figures such as Louis Riel and Arthur Currie. The book also delves into significant moments, including Canada's declaration of war and the 1990s peacekeeping crises. It addresses challenges faced by the military, such as resource struggles, cultural shifts, and scandals, while offering a fresh perspective on Canada's role in international conflicts. David A. Borys is a Canadian military historian and faculty member at Langara College in Vancouver. He has been seen on such history programs as APTN's Nations at War and National Geographic's Hitler's Last Stand, and is the host of the popular history podcast Curious Canadian History. Author David Borys comes on the podcast to discuss his book “Punching Above Our Weight: The Canadian Military at War Since 1867,” which takes readers on a riveting exploration spanning one hundred and fifty years of Canadian forces. “Punching Above Our Weight" is a photograph-rich history of 150 years of the Canadian military traces the evolution of the country's armed forces from a small, underfunded, poorly trained militia to the modern, effective military it is today. From the Red River Resistance and the Boer War through the world wars to modern peacekeeping and the long war in Afghanistan, David A. Borys details the conflicts and operations that Canadian soldiers have served in. He highlights the key battles, among them Amiens, the Scheldt Estuary, and Operation Medusa; the significant people, including Louis Riel, Arthur Currie, and Guy Simonds; and the decisive moments, such as the passing of conscription in August 1917, Canada's declaration of war in 1939, and the peacekeeping crises of the 1990s, that came to define the scope of Canada's participation in international conflicts and cement its global reputation. Borys also explores the challenges that the Canadian nation and its military have faced over those years, including major cultural and demographic shifts, a continual struggle for resources from generally disinterested governments, battlefield failures, and notorious and shocking scandals, along with ever-changing global threats. Punching Above Our Weight brings to light a new perspective on the Canadian military and its place in the world. United States President-elect Donald Trump's return to the White House is renewing pressure on Canada to focus more on defense spending and border security. In February, Trump warned NATO members that if they didn't pay their fair share — spending 2 per cent of their country's GDP on their military — they should not assume the U.S. would leap to their defence. In July, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Canada would meet the 2 per cent target, but only in 2032. The Liberals have invested billions to update the Canadian Armed Forces, but decades of underinvestment have led to serious capability gaps. This week, on “It's Political,” we take a look at the state of the Canadian Armed Forces and ask how prepared Canada is for the threats we face. First, we'll hear from experts: Canadian Army Commander Lieutenant-General Michael Wright, Carleton University Associate Professor Philippe Lagassé, University of Calgary Associate Professor Rob Huebert, Observatory on Politics and Security in the Arctic Director Mathieu Landriault, Canadian Global Affairs Institute President David Perry, Royal Military College of Canada Professor Jane Boulden, and retired Royal Canadian Air Force brigadier general Kevin Whale. Then, Althia will sit down with National Defence Minister Bill Blair. Some of the clips this week were sourced from the House of Commons, CPAC, the Halifax International Security Forum, the CBC, CTV, Global, NBC and ABC. This episode of “It's Political” was produced by Althia Raj and Kevin Sexton. Matt Hearn is our sound engineer. Our theme music is by Isaac Joel.

This year, Remembrance Day ceremonies, including at the National War Memorial in Ottawa, will feel a little different for a number of reasons. The biggest change? Military chaplains who officiate at mandatory public events can no longer recite faith-specific religious prayers for soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice in battle. Prayers are now to be called “spiritual reflections”, using non-religious, gender-neutral words. Chaplains can no longer wear their traditional purple sashes with symbols of their faith atop their uniforms. While the changes have been on the books for some time, they weren't being enforced, until now. The changes have prompted renewed backlash from a senior Catholic chaplain and from the Conservative Party, who decried this secularization of the Canadian Armed Forces. But military officials say their goal is to be more inclusive of personnel of all different faiths—plus those who practise no religion at all. On today's episode of The CJN Daily, we consult three Jewish leaders involved in Remembrance Day events and the legacy of Rabbi Reuven Bulka, who delivered a short benediction to the nation on Nov. 11 for nearly three decades, until his death in 2021. We'll hear from Rabbi Idan Scher, who will deliver the official benediction today; Captain (Rabbi) Arnold Noteh Glogauer, Jewish chaplain at CFB Petawawa; and Jon Mitzmacher, the principal at Ottawa's Community Jewish School, where a new curriculum unit honours Rabbi Bulka's legacy of kindness. What we talked about: Read more in The CJN about the Hurwitz family of Montreal, whose son Sgt. Samuel “Moe” (KIA 1944) made the ultimate sacrifice, and about a younger brother, naval gunner Harry (taken POW in 1944) who were both honoured as Canadian Jewish heroes during a recent Remembrance Day ceremony in Hampstead, Quebec. The late Rabbi Reuven Bulka, considered as Canada's Rabbi, died in June 2021. Catch up on The CJN's coverage of his legacy here, his obituary, and here. Canada enshrined Kindness Week into law in May 2021 in honour of Rabbi Bulka, on The CJN Daily. Wayne Eyre - Wikipedia Eyre was commissioned into the 2nd Battalion, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry in 1988.[3] In 1993 Eyre, who was a captain at the time, was deployed to Croatia as part of the United Nations Protection Force. He took part in Operation Medak Pocket in which he commanded a reconnaissance platoon, which witnessed the aftermath of ethnic cleansing in the village of Lički Čitluk.[9] He became commanding officer of the 3rd Battalion, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry in 2004.[10] He went on to become commander of 2 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group in 2009 and,[3] after that, Deputy Commanding General of Operations for the United States Army's XVIII Airborne Corps in 2012, in which role he was deployed to Afghanistan.[10] He was appointed General Officer Commanding 3rd Canadian Division and Joint Task Force West in 2014.[10] In May 2018,[11] Eyre became the first non-American to serve as deputy commander of the United Nations Command in South Korea.[11][3][12][13] He was succeeded by Vice Admiral Stuart Mayer of the Royal Australian Navy in June 2019, and returned to Canada as Commander Military Personnel Command.[14] On July 12, 2019, it was announced Eyre would be appointed the commander of the Canadian Army, effective from August 20.[14][15] Eyre was appointed acting chief of the Defence Staff on February 24, 2021, following the stepping aside of Admiral Art McDonald pending an investigation by the Canadian Forces National Investigation Service.[16][17][18] He was promoted to full general on August 13, 2021[19] and appointed as the official Chief of Defence Staff on November 25, 2021.[20] Eyre was made a Commander of the United States' Legion of Merit on April 24, 2021.[4] He had previously been appointed as an officer of the American order while a brigadier-general in 2015 and,[21] in 2020, was awarded an Oak Leaf Cluster (second award) to the Legion of Merit.[22] On March 15, 2022, Eyre, along with 313 other Canadians, was banned from entering Russia, in protest of the Government of Canada's opposition to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.[23] --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/tango-romeo/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/tango-romeo/support
First on our agenda is the eruption of political chaos at the federal level, with scandals, showdowns, and shifting alliances dominating the discourse. We dissect the polarizing stances of Premier Ford and Prime Minister Trudeau as they speak out in support of Israel amidst escalating tensions in the Middle East. The implications of their statements reverberate across the political spectrum, igniting fierce debates and sparking questions about foreign policy priorities. Amidst the chaos, we witness a dramatic meltdown during Question Period between the Liberals and Conservatives, exposing deep-seated divisions and raising concerns about the efficacy of parliamentary discourse. In a bid to address growing concerns about foreign interference in Canadian politics, the announcement of a foreign interference registry sends shockwaves through the political establishment. We analyze the motivations behind this initiative and its potential impact on safeguarding Canadian democracy. But that's not all – we explore the controversial introduction of Canada's departure tax, provoking outcry and debate over its fairness and implications for Canadians traveling abroad. And in a bizarre twist, we uncover the public shaming of the Canadian military's new logo, raising questions about branding, symbolism, and the role of public perception in shaping national identity. 0:00 - Intro 3:30 - Political Federal Chaos 24:27 - Ford and Trudeau Speak out in Support of Israeli's 34:00 - Breaking Down the Question Period Meltdown 47:00 - Foreign Interference Inquiry Registry 01:07:46 - Canada's Departure Tax 01:15:40 - The Canadian Military's New Logo?

Canada routinely faces criticism that it does not meet spending commitments as a NATO ally. And recently, the Department of National Defence's own internal reporting painted an alarming picture of the state of the Canadian Armed Forces. Polling shows that Canadians increasingly worry about what this all means for the country's presence on the world stage. For more on how to navigate these difficult waters, we welcome: Kerry Buck, former Canadian Ambassador to NATO, now a senior fellow at the University of Ottawa; Guy Thibault, a retired Lieutenant General in the Canadian Army, who's currently Chair of the Board at CDA Institute; and Christian Leuprecht, professor at the Royal Military College of Canada and Queen's University.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

I love a David vs. Goliath story, and in this episode we have an especially lopsided mismatch. Our Goliath is the Canadian Military and our David is a modest sex worker offering a discounted rate to soldiers. The first stones have already been thrown in this battle but so far the military has done little more than offer the kind of advertisement an entrepreneur would dream of. For example, the memo sent throughout the Kingston, Ontario military base warning it's members to not seek the services of the local sex worker offering military discounts... well... that didn't go as planned. In this episode Madelayne Klein and I are joined by Tina... who is the last person the Canadian military wants it's employees sleeping with. Welcome to an interview with the author of Building Trust: Exceptional Leadership in an Uncertain World, Darryl Stickel. In his book, Darryl outlines his groundbreaking Trust Unlimited blueprint for building trust. Stickel moves away from the traditional approach of influencing people's willingness to trust—the con artist's tactic—to employing one or more of ten levers, which leaders can “pull” to close the gap between how much they are trusted and how much they should be. This approach also makes them more trustable and increases trust where it is deficient. Darryl Stickel is one of the world's leading experts on trust with over twenty years of experience.
