After an exciting announcement and catching up on listener voicemails, we discuss what it's like to have to fight your own temperament. If you're not naturally the most joyful person, do you need to be? What if you're trying to be joyful and you're just repeatedly falling flat on your face? Today's Promise: Psalm 30:5 Have you ever found yourself in a season of sorrow, pain, or uncertainty, wondering if the dark night of your soul will ever end? In the middle of hardship, it's easy to become so focused on the problem that hope feels distant and change seems impossible. But Scripture reminds us of a powerful truth: weeping may last for the night, but it does not last forever. Seasons of struggle are real, but they are temporary. They are chapters in your story, not the conclusion. In this episode, we're reminded that while problems come and go, God's constant and unfailing love remains. As a child of God, you live under His favor, and that favor lasts a lifetime. His love has a way of turning the night into morning and replacing tears with joy. If you're weary, discouraged, or holding on by faith, this message will point you back to hope, renewal, and the promise that a new day is coming.

In this Christmas Eve message, Sean Sears shares how the joy announced in the Christmas story isn't tied to perfect circumstances, but to God stepping into real life with real people. You'll discover where lasting joy actually comes from and why it's available even when life feels unfinished.

Joy Comes with the MorningPsalms 30:1-12I believe David is suggesting that if we stay strong during tough times, we'll overcome our challenges Let us keep our eyes on the Lord today in our hearts tuned into his word. Let us have hope, faith, and peace of mind that God will turn things around. Amen.
What if joy isn't about choosing between the hard and the good—but embracing both? In this episode of This Undivided Life, I talk with Jillian Benfield, author of Overwhelmed & Grateful: The Key to Finding God's Goodness in All Life's Ups & Downs. We all want joy—but life is hard. Culture tells us to focus on the positive, yet science shows ignoring our pain only makes things worse. Jillian shares how real joy comes when we embrace both the hard and the good—the "&" in life. Through her own story and practical insights, she reminds us we can be honest about our struggles and grateful for our blessings. Because life is both hard and beautiful—and true joy is found right there in the middle.
Pastor Phelps preaches from Acts 8 and shows how mega joy came to the city of Jerusalem, and how it can come to our cities today. Message originally preached Sunday morning October 19, 2025.

This week, guest speaker Pastor Garrett Myers from Resurrection Church in Lima, Ohio, brought a powerful message of hope titled “Joy Comes in the Morning.” Speaking to a church walking through grief, Pastor Garrett reminded us that while weeping may last for a night, God's joy and faithfulness remain unshaken (Psalm 30:5).Drawing from Joshua 1 and Acts 12, he challenged us to rise up with courage, let go of offenses, walk in unity, and commit to constant prayer—for our leaders, for one another, and for revival in our community. SHOW NOTES: TRANSCRIPT: In honor of my 20th year of podcasting on The Book of Life, I'm bringing you another episode from the archives: Summer Coolness, released in June 2007. The episode featured a now-defunct website called ReaderGirlz, and the website Nextbook that morphed into Tablet Magazine in 2009. There were also many mentions of MySpace. I interviewed Melissa Schorr, author of Goy Crazy, who, according to her website, seems to have mostly moved on from kidlit to journalism. I must say, her most recent book from 2017, Shame Nation: Choosing Kindness and Compassion in an Age of Cruelty and Trolling, looks extremely on point. And the episode featured the band Sababa, which happily is still in existence, and in fact, they've recently released their fourth album called When We Rise. In this message from Philippians 1, we discover that true joy doesn't come from circumstances but from allegiance to Jesus. Paul is in prison, telling this church that every time he thinks about them he is thankful and prays for them with such joy. Joy was not a by-product. Joy was their form of resistance and strength. That same joy is available to us today.

Joy Comes in the Morning
The most joyful people in the world are unselfish people.
This is a deeply thoughtful and inspiring reflection on Living with Joy, and you've beautifully woven together personal experience, Scripture, and practical spiritual insight. It offers a powerful challenge to choose joy, not as a denial of reality, but as a deeply rooted act of faith and alignment with God's purpose. A few key themes stand out strongly: 1. Joy as a Command, Not Just a Feeling You've made a compelling case that joy isn't just a mood we stumble into, but a spiritual discipline. Repeated Scriptural commands—“Rejoice in the Lord always,” “Be glad,” “Shout for joy”—show that joy is something God calls us to decide to embrace, even when circumstances are hard. That's not shallow cheerfulness; it's deep resilience rooted in trust. 2. Joy Comes from Knowing God's Big Plan This theme is central. You highlighted how Jesus tells His disciples to take heart in the face of trouble because He has already overcome the world. That same promise is offered to us. True joy isn't rooted in everything going well—but in knowing that, whatever happens, God is in control and His plan includes us. 3. Joy is a Product of Gratitude and Worship You noted that joy flows when we spend time in the Word, when we worship, when we recall God's goodness. That practical invitation—to read, to sing, to reflect on blessings—is so simple, but powerful. When we lift our eyes to the eternal, we stop being ruled by the temporary. 4. Joy Is Strength Nehemiah 8:10 might be one of the most hopeful verses in Scripture: “The joy of the Lord is your strength.” That's the kind of power we all need—especially when life is discouraging or overwhelming. It's not joy after we're strong, it's joy that makes us strong. 5. Joy is a Choice We Make in Faith From Mary to the Israelites rebuilding Jerusalem, to the early church under persecution, the examples you gave show that joy often shows up in hard, even confusing times. Not because of denial—but because of belief. Your reflection also brings a very honest voice to the struggle of living joyfully. It's not always easy, and those who pretend it is may come off as naïve or tone-deaf. But you've acknowledged the struggle and pointed to the source of strength that allows us to rise above it—not by willpower, but by anchoring our hearts in God. Would you like help turning this into a spoken message, devotional, or small group study? When life feels heavy, choosing joy can seem impossible. But what if joy isn't just a feeling—what if it's a command and a source of strength? In this encouraging message, we explore how Scripture calls us to live with joy, not by ignoring pain, but by trusting in God's Big Plan. Discover how worship, gratitude, and time in God's Word can help shift your perspective, renew your hope, and give you the strength to keep going—no matter what you're facing. Whether you're walking through hardship or just feeling spiritually dry, this video will remind you that joy is possible, joy is powerful, and joy is a gift from God.
