The harder you chase joy, the further it slips away - here's why...In this episode of Tao Dialogues, we explore a powerful Taoist truth: joy isn't something you achieve — it's something you allow. Most of us are conditioned to believe “I'll be happy when…” — but that chase is exactly what keeps joy out of reach. This teaching reveals how the Inner Child creates urgency, comparison, and pressure, while Shen — your deeper authentic nature — guides you back to calm, presence, and enoughness.Discover how practising wu wei (effortless effort) shifts you from striving to flowing — and why true joy appears the moment you stop chasing and start aligning with what already is. Because nothing is missing — and joy has been here all along.Read the blog post that inspired this episode:https://davidjameslees.substack.com/p/middle-light [second blog on this page] Our Tao Dialogues are powerful yet gentle teachings about authenticity, spirituality and finding emotional balance and flow in everyday life. This message centers on a simple but critical truth: be careful where your joy comes from. In Luke 10, the disciples celebrated what they were able to do, but Jesus redirected their joy away from results and back to identity—being known by God. When joy is tied to outcomes, recognition, or success, it becomes unstable. But when it's rooted in God, it produces strength and endurance. Like Noah, who obeyed for decades without visible results, we're reminded that our calling is faithfulness, not control over outcomes.

What I carried yesterday does not define this moment. Where there has been heaviness, I release it. Where there has been sorrow, I place it into Your hands. I do not hold on to what You are lifting from me. You bring joy. Not temporary, not fragile, but deep and steady—rooted in who You are. You replace what has been heavy with something lighter. You restore what has felt worn down within me. You renew me. Where I have felt tired, You bring strength. Where I have felt low, You lift me. Where I have felt uncertain, You bring hope that carries me forward into this day. So I rise again. Not in my own strength, but in Your presence within me. You are working in me, restoring, strengthening, and renewing every part of my life. Jesus, fill me with Your joy. Let it shape my thoughts, guide my steps, and carry me through everything I face today. Let this day be marked not by what has been, but by what You are doing now. I step into joy. Jesús, camino en Tu gozo y dejo atrás toda carga hoy. Jesus Cristo, caminho na Tua alegria e deixo todo peso para trás hoje. From São Paulo to New York, from Nairobi to Madrid, across every place rising into this new day, You are present. You are restoring. You are renewing Your people. So I rise. I trust. What does real joy actually look like… especially when life is not easy? In this episode, Dr. Bryan Cutshall walks through a truth many people overlook. Joy is not something you have to create or chase. It is something God brings into your life. If joy only shows up when things are going well, is it really the kind of joy Scripture talks about? Most people think joy is tied to circumstances. But when you look at what the Bible shows, real joy comes from heaven and is given through Christ, not produced by what is happening around you. This episode walks through what it means to receive that joy, how it was revealed through the message of Jesus, and why it should shape the way you live every day.
Paring Down: Realistic minimalism to live more intentionally
What does it really look like to build a joyful life through hard work, resilience, and purpose? I had the pleasure of sitting down with inspiring Kodiak dairy farmer Kelli Foreman to explore the unfiltered reality of farm life in Alaska—and why working with your hands might be the missing piece in modern happiness. From 2:30 a.m. wake-ups to community impact, this conversation dives deep into finding joy through discipline and meaningful work. In this episode, you'll learn: Why working hard with your hands can increase joy, fulfillment, and mental well-being in a digital world The realities of small farm life in Alaska, including dairy farming, animal care, and rural challenges How resilience is built through loss, setbacks, and uncontrollable circumstances The powerful connection between purpose and long-term happiness How simplifying your life and “paring down” can help you focus on what truly matters This episode will leave you rethinking convenience, embracing hard work, and rediscovering joy in the simple, meaningful things. The Church did not begin with a plan. It began with a prayer. In this series through the Book of Acts, we follow the earliest followers of Jesus, ordinary people transformed by His love, united by His mission, and empowered by His Spirit. This is the story of how the Church was established and how the movement continues through us today.
This sleep hypnosis is designed for evenings when you want rest without heaviness and relaxation without emotional weight. Set on a warm tropical beach in Trinidad, the session uses gentle Caribbean waves and soft, permissive language to invite ease, comfort, and emotional lightness. Rather than encouraging deep introspection, the experience supports a friendly, welcoming state where enjoyment can surface naturally. Ideal before bed when the day has been demanding and you want sleep to feel kind, uncomplicated, and inviting. As the body relaxes into rhythm and warmth, tension softens and sleep arrives with a sense of quiet joy and renewal.

Today's Promise: Psalm 30:5 Have you ever found yourself in a season of sorrow, pain, or uncertainty, wondering if the dark night of your soul will ever end? In the middle of hardship, it's easy to become so focused on the problem that hope feels distant and change seems impossible. But Scripture reminds us of a powerful truth: weeping may last for the night, but it does not last forever. Seasons of struggle are real, but they are temporary. They are chapters in your story, not the conclusion. In this episode, we're reminded that while problems come and go, God's constant and unfailing love remains. As a child of God, you live under His favor, and that favor lasts a lifetime. His love has a way of turning the night into morning and replacing tears with joy. If you're weary, discouraged, or holding on by faith, this message will point you back to hope, renewal, and the promise that a new day is coming.

True joy isn't fragile happiness, it's a settled gladness rooted in Jesus, often born out of waiting and disappointment. What if joy isn't about choosing between the hard and the good—but embracing both? In this episode of This Undivided Life, I talk with Jillian Benfield, author of Overwhelmed & Grateful: The Key to Finding God's Goodness in All Life's Ups & Downs. We all want joy—but life is hard. Culture tells us to focus on the positive, yet science shows ignoring our pain only makes things worse. Jillian shares how real joy comes when we embrace both the hard and the good—the "&" in life. Through her own story and practical insights, she reminds us we can be honest about our struggles and grateful for our blessings. Because life is both hard and beautiful—and true joy is found right there in the middle.

This week, guest speaker Pastor Garrett Myers from Resurrection Church in Lima, Ohio, brought a powerful message of hope titled “Joy Comes in the Morning.” Speaking to a church walking through grief, Pastor Garrett reminded us that while weeping may last for a night, God's joy and faithfulness remain unshaken (Psalm 30:5).Drawing from Joshua 1 and Acts 12, he challenged us to rise up with courage, let go of offenses, walk in unity, and commit to constant prayer—for our leaders, for one another, and for revival in our community. SHOW NOTES: TRANSCRIPT: In honor of my 20th year of podcasting on The Book of Life, I'm bringing you another episode from the archives: Summer Coolness, released in June 2007. The episode featured a now-defunct website called ReaderGirlz, and the website Nextbook that morphed into Tablet Magazine in 2009. There were also many mentions of MySpace. I interviewed Melissa Schorr, author of Goy Crazy, who, according to her website, seems to have mostly moved on from kidlit to journalism. I must say, her most recent book from 2017, Shame Nation: Choosing Kindness and Compassion in an Age of Cruelty and Trolling, looks extremely on point. And the episode featured the band Sababa, which happily is still in existence, and in fact, they've recently released their fourth album called When We Rise.
