Dr. Kelli Palfy began her professional career working in adult and youth corrections. Here she noticed a disproportionate number of males in the prison system. As an RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police) officer, she took an interest in investigating sex crimes and went on to specialize in sex crimes committed against children internationally. Here, she began to see that males were victims of sexual abuse too, and that there were very few resources available to them. She wondered if this was why so many males ended up in prison.  As she combed through video evidence, she witnessed first-hand the grooming tactics commonly used by sophisticated pedophiles. After leaving the RCMP, Dr. Palfy obtained her Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the University of Alberta. She wanted to support male victims, and sought to better understand the reasons why males don't commonly disclose sexual abuse. She is now a trained trauma therapist and public speaker on the topic of male abuse. Brief Episode Summary: Recently, my wife and I were out to dinner with friends. As Fran continued her conversation with Sally, I was gently led to share with Patrick how excited I was as to the upcoming podcast series I'd arranged with Dr. Kelli Palfy, its focus being on the young victims of sexual abuse and just how widespread it is under the age of 18, as high as 1 in 3 with girls and 1 in 6 with boys. Patrick was clearly taken aback. I on the other hand, was not surprised when he validated what I'd recently been reading in Dr. Palfy's book, “Pawsitively Me." Patrick said, “I discovered that both of my adopted kids, a boy and a girl, as preschoolers, were sexually abused. My daughter didn't and still doesn't, want to talk about it.”#sexuallyabused #therapy #drugabuse #namaste #KelliPalfy #victims #sexualabuse #pawsitivelyme #theunsafeneighbour #survivors #childsexualabuse #caregiver #mentoo #malesexualabuse #grooming Key Topics:Regarding child sexual abuse, what are some of the largest myths which are both dangerous and costly? What are six things every caregiver of children needs to know? Some of your men friends as children, were sexually abused and have been suffering in silence for years. In this episode, I speak with Doctor Kelli Palfy, a registered psychologist specializing in working with adult male survivors of sexual abuse. Prior to becoming a psychologist, she was an RCMP officer who worked in the Integrated Child Exploitation Unit, part of the Behavioral Sciences Unit of the RCMP. As many of you know, one of the subjects that I've brought to this show, my career and books that I have written, articles that I have published, podcasts that I've been on, and other appearances is the fact that when I was a child, I was sexually abused. I had this moment where I did not share it for a very long time, and once I did what happened, I was told never to talk about it; this would damage our family, and we will lose support from people who were supporting us and so on. This conversation that I have today with Doctor Kelli Palfy is about exposing not only this subject matter to society at a greater scale in depth but also looking at a lot of the ways that boys specifically fall into sexual abuse, how they are groomed, how they are cold, how society doesn't talk about it or looks the other way and then how we create space for male survivors to finally have this conversation, to find community, to find help, to find guidance, to find ultimately a way to be able to move through this and not let it be that hidden thing that stops you from finding love, compassion, empathy, hopes, success and whatever else it is that you may need in your life. So, I greatly appreciate her coming on and sharing not only her life's work in this subject matter but also helping me move towards bringing this closer to the light not only through the show but also in my own personal life and on this healing journey. It's my honor and privilege to have these hard conversations because I know that someone listening today is going to find the support they need. Dr. Kelli Palfy - Healing for Male Sexual Abuse Survivors There is healing for male sexual abuse survivors. Dr. Kelli Palfy, is a registered psychologist working in private practice in Edmonton, AB. Canada. Of the many ways she helps to bring healing into the lives of her clients there was one aspect that I wanted to bring to my listeners today and that is the ignored topic of male survivors of adult or childhood sexual abuse.  What are signs that a wife might need to be aware of should her husband be a survivor of sexual abuse. How can she protect her sons (and ultimately her daughters too) from sexual abuse…especially since the statistics show 95% of sexual abuse is perpetrated by a family member, someone you trust, someone who has gained the trust of your child.  For the first 20-25 minutes, Kelli and I talk about her journey to her Ph.d in psychology. Why the interest in helping men find wholeness and healing after sexual abuse? Granted that is not her only focus in her practice but after hearing her story I could see why she could relate. Not only from her own hesitation to find help for the merciless bullying she endured in her work environment but what she saw day in and day out as she served her community as part of the Royal Mounted Canadian Police.   Below you'll see some resources listed. Also, on Dr. Palfy's website she has a Resource link on which you'll find educational videos. There are personal stories of abuse and healing, how PTSD relates to sexual trauma, the truth about unwanted arousal and several more. Dr. Palfy does not side step the uncomfortable issue, the tough questions, nor does she avoid addressing the internal struggle.  Wives, if you feel that your husband is showing some of the signs that Dr. Palfy talks about, take your concerns directly to God because no one knows your husband better than God. No one knows the details of his life, any traumas that may have occurred or the way he's tried to process them. You're looking for direction, support and how to bridge the conversation (should there be a need for one). Don't hesitate to reach out to professionals for guidance as well. Maybe you can't identify the signs that Dr. Palfy gives but you know smoothing is wrong, possibly there's a disconnect of intimacy. To be honest, trauma manifests in a variety of ways, some very unique. Listen to the story that Dr. Palfy shares about the man who begins to limp and it grows worse. But in either situation, whether it's for your husband or another family member, (son or daughter), educate yourself and consult the Lord for clarity and understanding. Ask God to prepare your husband's heart for the conversation, if he has indeed ever experienced or is experiencing any type of sexual abuse. If you are led to be the first one to verbalize what you suspect, have courage. You are in a unique position to usher in healing for your husband, to lift a weight you have no idea the heaviness of it all. Felipe Blue, LCAS, CSI interviews... Dr. Kelli Palfy, began her professional career working in adult and youth corrections. Dr. Palfy currently runs a small private practice where she works with male survivors of sexual abuse, first responders and couples using Emotion-Focused and Cognitive Behavioral Approach, plus Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). Male sexual abuse occurs more commonly among infants, youth and adults than was previously suspected. Despite knowing this, disproportionately few males seek support. Many remain silent, protect their families, and cope through isolating or numbing, themselves, misusing substances and engaging in sexual promiscuity or hypermasculinity. ME^N TOO: UNSPOKEN TRUTHS ABOUT MALE SEXUAL ABUSE is for male survivors, their supporters and helping professionals. It is a psycho-educational book intended to support and educate the public and male survivors. In this book I discuss the different types of offenders, how they chose and groom their targets and common responses to sexual abuse. I also provide facts about parental and sibling abuse, and through the stories of 13 male sexual abuse victims I discuss what research shows about why boys and men so seldom seek support. It is written from their perspective, with the wisdom of retired police officer and psychologist, Dr. Kelli Palfy. Through their narrative accounts, Dr. Palfy offers: • Male victims - Healing through recognition of both their positions as victims and the impact of their abuse. • Parents and teachers - Strategies to identify common yet sophisticated predatory grooming tactics, plus ideas on how to better protect children from abusers. • First responders and helping professionals - information to better recognize the signs of traumatized people, examples of male abuse explaining when it began, how it was maintained and why the victims remained silent for so long. For the sake of our boys and men, discussions about male sexual abuse need to increase. Male victims need to feel safe asking for support. ME^N TOO highlights the many unique barriers boys and men face as they contemplate their road to recovery. kellipalfy.com Recorded at More Than Therapy --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/morethantherapy/message

In this episode, Dr. Palfy discusses how her work in law enforcement, specifically investigating and arresting child sexual abusers, led her into a career of psychology. She discusses how when we think of childhood sexual trauma, we often think of women, although 1 in 6 men were sexually abused prior to age 16. She explains that of those that were abused, only 5 in 1,000 go on to disclose their abuse, thus giving a sense that this doesn't happen to boys and may be missed when working with men. She discusses some of the differences between abuse of boys and women including societal norms of men being protectors (the man of the family) so not telling, fear of being seen as gay or as someone who will inevitably be a child abuser, worrying that they somehow wanted the abuse as males anatomy responses physiologically different during abuse, and ultimately society not making a place for males to be vulnerable, and instead dismissing or shaming them for being too sensitive. We discuss her work in helping others to understand male experiences of abuse, so that clinicians can be more aware of seeing that this may be part of the reason men are struggling and help them to address their trauma. Kelli Palfy, Ph.D. is a psychologist and author, who first started her career as an RCMP officer that specialized in sex crimes. Today, Dr. Palfy works with first responders, male survivors of sexual abuse, and people who are bullied in the workplace. Dr. Palfy authored the book Men Too: Unspoken Truths About Male Sexual Abuse which is based off of her own research and experience in the field.
