Join Ginger and Julie as they wrap up the season by talking about brain lessons.  A little basic brain knowledge can go a long way in understanding behaviors and supporting children in your home or the classroom. Understanding brain development enables us to respond compassionately and helps children—and adults—thrive.  Brains grow from the bottom up and the inside out.  Although babies are born with brain structures in place, the development and activation of areas of the brain happen sequentially - from the bottom up and inside out. Brain development occurs sequentially, from the bottom up and inside out. Neural growth depends on environmental experiences, relationships, and developmental readiness—stages cannot be skipped. Chronic stress and trauma can disrupt this process, wiring the brain to expect stress and react to it intensely. However, due to neuroplasticity, the brain can adapt, heal, and reorganize itself, offering hope for those affected by trauma. Building resilience involves managing stress through deep breathing, meditation, proper sleep, hydration, nutrition, and healthy relationships. Caregivers play a vital role by offering responsive, nurturing care that supports neural tuning (strengthening) and pruning (removing unused connections). These processes help children learn trust, self-regulation, and efficient learning. Storytelling also fosters brain development by soothing stress responses and enhancing connection. We chat about how self-care looks different for everyone—whether it's playing video games, cuddling a pet, or taking a walk. We're all unique, and that's totally okay. Plus, we shared why we believe therapy is something everyone should try at some point. She was only 70 pages in, but as she likes to say, her brain was one giant pretzel already. Since recording this episode, Steph Taylor also started reading the book. So expect a followup episode next week, with a very special guest!  In the meantime, in this episode we discussed questions like: What does “the body keeps the score” mean to both of us? Why were both of us afraid to read this book? What does it mean to “know what you know and feel what you feel?” What are some examples of our own bodies “keeping the score”? The Body Keeps the Score Full Chapter Book SummaryMore Content On Bookey Best Book Summary App. Have you ever suffered abuse, sexual assault, a serious car accident, or some other injuries? Life often leaves us with too many psychological traumas and nightmarish memories. We struggle to get rid of them and forget them, only to find we can't. The brain and body never forget the psychological trauma caused by an event, and it is not “all in one's head,” but rather has a physiological basis. This book will take us through the secret of the body that never forgets trauma. Overview | Chapter 1Hi, welcome to Bookey. Today we'll unlock the book The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma. Let's first hear a story. Marilyn was a tall, athletic-looking woman in her mid-thirties who worked as a nurse. She met a fireman named Michael while playing tennis at the sports club and the two began a relationship. They often talked about tennis and movies together. Marilyn said that she usually avoided men, but this relationship gradually made her feel comfortable. As they got closer, one Saturday evening, Marilyn invited Michael to stay over at her apartment. She described feeling “uptight and unreal” as soon as they were alone together, having very little sense of what would happen next. After a few glasses of wine and several episodes of a TV show, they fell asleep together in bed. At around two in the morning, when they were fast asleep, Michael turned over. When Marilyn felt his body touch hers, she exploded—pounding him with her fists, scratching and biting, screaming, “You bastard, you bastard!” Michael, startled awake, grabbed his belongings and fled. After he left, Marilyn felt deeply humiliated and hated herself for what she had done. So she turned to the therapist Bessel Van der Kolk for help in dealing with her terror of men and her inexplicable rage attacks. So why did Marilyn act like that? After several treatments,Van der Kolk found that Marilyn had never been able to let go of her childhood experience of sexual assault by her father. In fact, on many occasions, even if things have changed and time has long passed, we may still go out of control due to some tiny danger signals that trigger our horrible memories. People often think that it's “all in one's head,” but the book The Body Keeps the Score suggests that psychological trauma actually has a physiological basis. So what are the physical and psychological effects of trauma? What does the body have to do with trauma? How can it be treated? This book will give us the answers. The author of this book is Bessel Van der Kolk, who is the world's best-known master of trauma treatment. He is the founder and medical director of the Trauma Center in Brookline in the United States, a Professor of Psychiatry at Boston University Medical School and director of the National Complex Trauma Treatment Network. With more than 30 years of experience in cutting-edge research and clinical practice in the field of psychological trauma, he is an expert in both medication and psychotherapy, with a creative insight on trauma. He also frequently conducts in-depth exchanges and cooperation with all the founders of major trauma treatments in the United States. As one of the authorities in the field of psychological trauma treatment, his theory has greatly influenced the mainstream approaches to trauma treatment today.

And the trauma from those experiences made Tracy very sick. Over many years Tracy tried everything to get better. It wasn't until Tracy found somatic experiencing therapy that she was able to heal. Somatic experiencing is healing trauma through the body, as opposed to talk therapy which is healing via the brain. This quick episode is an insight into the power of somatic healing work. #03 - Jolene Parks - Why the Body Matters EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS In this episode of midlife, we meet the Queen, the thought leader, the godmother of grey area drinking and coaching - Jolene Park. Jolene has a TED talk, which has had over 300,000 downloads. We are talking about the importance of nourishing our neurotransmitters, and supporting our nervous systems when we are looking to change our relationship with alcohol. We talk about trying to medicate a dysregulated nervous system - which is why a lot of people drink - when we've been triggered by our reaction to something or when we're feeling either really extremely joyful or we're feeling incredibly anxious. And the things that we can do, instead of drinking to calm our nervous systems in a way that moves us towards our goal of not drinking. Jolene explains exactly what Grey Area Drinking is and takes us through and grounding practice and explain why it is grounding that the body is seeking when it reaches for alcohol. It's fascinating!
