The stigma surrounding mental health has various impacts on individuals, such as preventing them from seeking treatment and causing discrimination in the workplace. Addressing stigma can lead to better access to care and resources for those with mental health conditions, as well as promoting social inclusion and empowerment for individuals to manage their health and pursue their goals. It can also foster a stronger, more diverse community. During the podcast, Felipe Blue, LCAS, LCMHCA, CCS discuss the importance of mental health and the challenges faced by marginalized communities when it comes to accessing mental health resources. He is joined by two preseasoned therapists, Alex Hatley and Alexis Prunczic, who share their personal experiences and insights on the topic. Together, they discuss the impact of systemic racism, poverty, and other social factors on mental health and how community involvement can help in raising awareness and promoting access to mental health services. They emphasize the need for Stigma around mental health needs to be addressed in order to promote well-being and reduce discrimination against those living with mental health challenges. To reduce stigma, it is important to promote open conversations, educate ourselves and others, and advocate for supportive policies and human rights. Acknowledging individuals' abilities and empowering them to reach their full potential can also help reduce stigma. Media also plays a role in perpetuating or reducing stigma, so it is important to be mindful of the content we consume and create.Mental health stigma is a negative attitude or belief towards people with mental health conditions, and it is common in society. Public stigma is when people view mental health negatively and may prevent individuals from seeking help. There is also self-stigma where individuals put themselves down or identify strongly with their diagnosis. Structural stigma is when societal structures create an environment of stigmatizing certain groups, such as those in the LGBTQ+ community or low-income individuals. The consequences of mental health stigma can include individuals not seeking This was a conversation about the stigma surrounding mental health and the barriers that prevent people from seeking help. In the latest episode of the Data Center Frontier Show podcast, DCF Editor-in-Chief Matt Vincent sits down with Phill Lawson-Shanks, Chief Innovation Officer at Aligned Data Centers, for a wide-ranging discussion that touches on some of the most pressing trends and challenges shaping the future of the data center industry. From the role of nuclear energy and natural gas in addressing the sector's growing power demands, to the rapid expansion of Aligned's operations in Latin America (LATAM), in the course of the podcast Lawson-Shanks provides deep insight into where the industry is headed. Scaling Sustainability: Tracking Embodied Carbon and Scope 3 Emissions A key focus of the conversation is sustainability, where Aligned continues to push boundaries in carbon tracking and energy efficiency. Lawson-Shanks highlights the company's commitment to monitoring embodied carbon—an effort that began four years ago and has since positioned Aligned as an industry leader. “We co-authored and helped found the Climate Accord with iMasons—taking sustainability to a whole new level,” he notes, emphasizing how Aligned is now extending its carbon traceability standards to ODATA's facilities in LATAM. By implementing lifecycle assessments (LCAs) and tracking Scope 3 emissions, Aligned aims to provide clients with a detailed breakdown of their environmental impact. “The North American market is still behind in lifecycle assessments and environmental product declarations. Where gaps exist, we look for adjacencies and highlight them—helping move the industry forward,” Lawson-Shanks explains. The Nuclear Moment: A Game-Changer for Data Center Power One of the most compelling segments of the discussion revolves around the growing interest in nuclear energy—particularly small modular reactors (SMRs) and microreactors—as a viable long-term power solution for data centers. Lawson-Shanks describes the recent industry buzz surrounding OKLO's announcement of a 12-gigawatt deployment with Switch as a significant milestone, calling the move “inevitable.” “There are dozens of nuclear plants operating in the U.S. today, but people just don't pay much attention to them,” he says. “Companies like OKLO are designing advanced modular reactors that are walk-away safe, reuse spent fuel, and eliminate the risks associated with traditional light-water reactors. This is the path forward.” However, he acknowledges that the widespread adoption of nuclear will take time, given the regulatory hurdles of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and the challenges of getting sites certified. Still, he remains optimistic: “We need this, and as an industry, we're pre-buying energy because we see the challenges ahead.” Bridging the Energy Gap with Natural Gas and Hydrogen While nuclear is a long-term solution, data centers need reliable power sources today. Lawson-Shanks sees natural gas as a practical interim solution, provided emissions can be mitigated. He also points to hydrogen as an emerging technology with potential, though challenges remain. “Hydrogen is really an energy transportation methodology rather than an energy source,” he explains. “It's highly corrosive, and the infrastructure isn't fully in place yet, but it's something we're closely monitoring.” He predicts that natural gas reciprocating engines will serve as a bridge solution until nuclear modules become widely available. “Once we reach steady-state nuclear power, those gas engines could replace diesel generators, which we all want to phase out,” he says. Explosive Growth in LATAM and the Evolution of Aligned's Global Strategy The conversation also covers Aligned's expansion into Latin America following its acquisition of ODATA. Lawson-Shanks describes the region as a booming market, particularly in Brazil, where Aligned has access to renewable energy through its investment in wind farms. “LATAM is an enormous growth market, and our waterless cooling system is ideal for places like Santiago, where water scarcity makes evaporative cooling unfeasible,” he explains. Aligned is integrating its advanced cooling technologies—such as Delta³ and DeltaFlow—into ODATA's new facilities, ensuring that sustainability remains a core component of their LATAM operations. Innovating Beyond Cooling: The Future of Heat Reuse Another forward-looking topic is Aligned's interest in heat reuse, an area where Lawson-Shanks sees significant potential for innovation. Through its partnership with QScale in Canada, Aligned is exploring methods to capture and repurpose waste heat from data centers for other applications. “Their heat reuse strategy is really interesting, and we're looking at how we can implement similar solutions in North America,” he says, hinting at future developments to come. Looking Ahead: A Future Shaped by Innovation and Sustainability As the conversation wraps up, it's clear that Lawson-Shanks sees the data center industry at an inflection point. The combination of sustainability commitments, new energy technologies, and rapid global expansion is forcing companies to rethink traditional models and embrace innovation at an unprecedented scale. “We've always fought against the idea that data centers have to be built the same way they were in the 1970s,” he says. “We're constantly redesigning, rethinking how we procure energy, and pushing the industry forward.” With Aligned continuing to lead the charge in sustainability, energy innovation, and international expansion, the insights shared in this episode offer a compelling look at the challenges and opportunities ahead for the data center industry.

Welcome to another "This or That" episode! This short, snappy installment investigates the sustainability of three topics you've asked me about, helping you make informed decisions. In this episode, we'll be covering three unusual options: E-readers vs. physical books: Kindles versus your everyday old book. Hand dryers vs. paper towels: I personally find hand dryers annoying. The best type of laundry detergent: There are many options, but I've been seeing a lot of advertising for those strip things, and I have strong opinions about them. In this episode, I share: The pros and cons of e-readers like Kindle versus traditional books from an environmental perspective. Why a physical book has a higher carbon footprint initially but can last decades. The surprising third option for reading that is actually better. Why hand dryers have a lower environmental impact. Why laundry strips are not as eco-friendly as their marketing suggests. How tablets are convenient but may contribute to microplastic pollution. What the worst detergent solution is for the environment. Key Quotes: "If you're a heavy reader, an e-reader is the best option. But just keep that thing for as long as you possibly can." "Paper towels may slightly reduce bacteria on hands compared to air dryers, but the difference is pretty minimal for practical purposes." "These strips don't dissolve as they claim to... it's a pretty big red flag." More Information: I mentioned a few LCAs and information references that you can find here: Comparative study on printed books and e-book reading devices Eco-friendly reading options Life cycle assessment of e-books and printed books in South Africa NPR article on books vs. e-readers Life cycle assessment of hand dryers vs. paper towels ScienceDirect study on hand drying methods MIT study on hand drying methods ResearchGate study on hand drying at the University of Melbourne Springer study on the environmental impact of hand drying methods Life cycle assessment of laundry detergents Study on sustainable laundry detergents Eco-friendly laundry detergent solutions Consumer report on best eco-friendly laundry detergents You can get involved with the podcast online: Find our full podcast via the website here Podcast Instagram here Instagram: Brianne West TikTok: Brianne West LinkedIn: Brianne West For our latest big project, find out more about Incrediballs here: Incrediballs

Felipe Blue, LCAS, CSI assists Sheridan with processing his pain and finding strategies to alleviate his pain. Losing a dog can be just as painful as losing a human loved one. Dogs are often considered part of the family, and their death can be a very difficult time for their owners. Men, in particular, may feel a sense of loss and grief that they may not be comfortable expressing. Here are some of the things that a man may experience when his dog dies: Shock and disbelief. It may be hard to believe that the dog is gone. He may feel like he's in a dream or that this is all a bad joke. Sadness and grief. He may cry, feel down, or have trouble sleeping. He may also have physical symptoms of grief, such as headaches or stomachaches. Anger. He may feel angry at the dog for dying, or at himself for not being able to save him. Guilt. He may feel guilty about things he said or did to the dog, or about not spending enough time with him. Loneliness. He may feel like he's lost his best friend and doesn't have anyone to talk to about his grief. It's important to allow yourself to feel these emotions and to grieve in your own way. There is no right or wrong way to grieve. If you're struggling to cope with the loss of your dog, there are resources available to help you, such as grief counseling or support groups. Here are some tips for coping with the loss of a dog: Allow yourself to grieve. Don't try to bottle up your emotions. Talk to someone you trust about how you're feeling. Take care of yourself. Make sure you're eating healthy, getting enough sleep, and exercising. Do things that make you happy. Spend time with loved ones, do activities you enjoy, or go for walks in nature. Remember the good times. Think about all the happy memories you have with your dog. This can help you feel closer to him even though he's gone. Losing a dog is a difficult experience, but it's important to remember that you're not alone. There are people who care about you and want to help you through this. With time and support, you will heal from this loss. Recorded at More Than Therapy www.morethantherapy.org --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/morethantherapy/message
