Jodi is one of the most recommended marriage therapists in the area but there's something about her that feels - wrong. “Every relationship needs to die in order to be reborn.” Her pattern is simple yet effective. Find the husband's addiction. Each husband has one. It's usually watching too many explicit videos, staring too long at his female coworkers, or just having too many inappropriate thoughts. Find the addiction. And stomp. It. Out. Shame the husband for how he's ruining the family and give the wife strength and power to run away from him… straight into Jodi's arms. It almost seems like that is her intention. And it seems to work like a charm - every single time. And just maybe - if Jodi really tries… maybe the men will even end up in prison. Then the wife will have nobody but Jodi. Youtuber / family blogger, Ruby Franke, should be very familiar with this. Because now all she has - is Jodi. Full show notes at rottenmangopodcast.com

So excited to be talking about how to make the most of our empty nest season with Dr. Mel Tavares! Dr. Mel is an award-winning author, speaker, life coach, and frequent media guest. Mel holds a Doctorate of Ministry, in Pastoral Care and Counseling and has 35 years of experience in working with families professionally and in ministry. She is a board certified mental health coach and life coach. Summary: -Distinction Between Mental Health and Mental Well-being: Mental health often involves clinical diagnoses, while mental well-being focuses on overall emotional and psychological health without a clinical diagnosis. -Holistic Approach to Health: Importance of addressing mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual health collectively. The conversation highlights the impact of nutrition and lifestyle habits on mental well-being. -Role of Faith in Counseling: Mel discusses the benefits of incorporating a biblical perspective in counseling and the limitations faced by secular counselors in discussing faith. -Purpose and Productivity in Later Life: The conversation touches on the idea that individuals in their 50s and 60s enter some of their most productive decades, encouraging listeners to pursue dreams and goals regardless of age. -Overcoming Trauma and Forgiveness: Mel shares personal experiences and emphasizes the importance of forgiveness and healing from past traumas, suggesting that Christian counselors or recovery groups can provide support. -Importance of Goal Setting: Setting goals provides structure and motivation, allowing individuals to turn their dreams into reality. -Community Engagement: Engaging in community activities and volunteering can alleviate loneliness and depression, fostering connections with others. -Anxiety Busters: Practical tips like eating healthily, maintaining a sleep routine, and reducing media consumption can help manage anxiety. -Hope and Encouragement: Mel concludes with a message of hope, emphasizing that there is always hope in God's plan and encouraging listeners to reach out for support. Podcast Intro: My guest, Dr. Mel Tavares is an award winning Author, Speaker, Teacher, and Coach and she sat down with me and provided a very informative conversation about entering our 50's and 60's with a healthy mental well-being and ready to explore all the new possibilities set before us. I chose the empty nester season of life because I felt like that encompassed a lot of the changes that a woman faces when entering her 50's and I wanted to expand it to our 60's as well. The transition into the empty nest phase of life can be a profound and transformative period in a woman's life because it is often filled with mixed emotions and new challenges. You may be seeing your children off to college, giving some away in marriage. Maybe your employment is going through changes; do you want to quit your current job and start the job you've always wanted to do/changing careers altogether? Or maybe you've decided to start going back to school and let's not forget that some ladies are also caregivers for their parents. So this particular time in a woman's life can be mentally, emotionally and physically overwhelming and how do we navigate it all? So Mel and I looked at the question how can we enter into this season of life equipped to make the most of it? The first thing we look at is our mental well being. Mel makes a distinction about mental health and mental well-being. I asked her questions such as, where can someone start when trying to pinpoint our gifts and talents? How can we discover what we're created for especially if we've lost connection with our true selves? Truth is, we've devoted ourselves to those around us and in doing so we can loose touch with who we are as an individual woman. And then there are the times we're just stuck; we know somethings not working but we don't know how to get unstuck. And here's something else we talked about, what happens when we forget how to dream? Ultimately, the journey through the empty nest phase is an invitation to embrace change and rediscover oneself. By prioritizing mental well-being and adopting a holistic approach (which Mel talks about), individuals can navigate this transition with confidence and joy. It is a time to reflect, dream, and step into new roles with a renewed sense of identity and purpose, knowing that the best years are yet to come. Dr. Dre, one of hip-hop's most influential figures, is facing a $10 million lawsuit from his former marriage counselor, Dr. Charles Sophy. The lawsuit accuses Dre of engaging in a sustained campaign of harassment involving threatening texts, intimidation, and homophobic comments. Dr. Sophy, a well-known psychotherapist, was hired by Dre in 2018 to facilitate mediation between Dre and his now-ex-wife, Nicole Young, during their tumultuous divorce. The couple, who had been married for 24 years, finalized their settlement in 2021. However, Dr. Sophy claims that the harassment began roughly 14 months later, taking him by surprise. "Rather than treating the mediation process as an opportunity for healing, [Dre] decided to take his frustrations about the mediation out on Dr. Sophy,” the lawsuit states. Sophy alleges that this was part of a “nearly year-long sustained campaign,” according to documents obtained by *Billboard* and *Rolling Stone*. The lawsuit highlights a specific instance in February 2023 when Dre allegedly sent Dr. Sophy threatening messages. In one text message, Dre reportedly warned the doctor that he would "have to pay" for something he had heard. Sophy states that he was “fearful for his life” following these texts and even felt compelled to wear a bulletproof vest for protection. The lawsuit also claims that Dre sent individuals posing as FBI agents to Dr. Sophy's gated community, allegedly attempting to enter his home under false pretenses. This incident left Dr. Sophy shaken, adding to his concerns for his personal safety. Dr. Sophy further alleges that Dre's threats were based on his sexual orientation, including homophobic rhetoric. According to *Rolling Stone*, one of the text messages from Dre reportedly read, "You're going to have to give me a written apology. If not, I'm moving forward. I'm not playing, trust me." The psychotherapist is not only seeking $10 million for civil harassment but has also filed for a court order prohibiting Dre from contacting him and is requesting a trial. As of now, Dre's legal team has not issued a public response to the lawsuit. Dr. Sophy's lawsuit brings serious allegations against Dre, who has a prominent reputation as a music mogul, producer, and entrepreneur. These claims, if proven, could have significant legal repercussions and impact Dre's public image. USA TODAY reached out to Dre's lawyer for comment on these allegations but has yet to receive a response. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Jeff & Sue Duffield are as unpredictably predictable in just about everything they are and everything they do! This episode starts out with the typical banter of two people who do just about everything together, but are as opposite as night and day in so many things. Jeff's production and orchestration opportunities are flourishing and building every day, while Sue has had some down time recently to recharge, reboot and balance out her life a bit.. Balance, in definition, is "an even distribution of weight enabling someone or something to remain upright and steady..", which is kind of funny when this particular episode starts out with recounting Sue's recent tumble on the pavement at the post office. But when it comes to balance and the walk of life of every Christian, be it like Sue to merge the physical with the spiritual. The four lessons that Jesus taught her during a month-long journey of seeking balance, just might apply to you too. www.sueduffield.com www.youtube.com/sueduffield www.jeffduffield.com

My guest Leslie Davis, is a founder (along with her husband) of HeartCall Ministries and it's because of the way God has blessed their marriage that makes Leslie passionate about seeing marriages healed and strengthened through the truth of God's Word. Their marriage is proof that you can have a solid, godly, blessed, rewarding marriage. Leslie and I talked about how marriage is simply two broken people bringing out the brokenness in each other but Leslie said something that I cannot ever remember considering it quite like she shared. Granted, I've been a widow now for a little over 5.5 years so maybe I'm just not remembering. She said, “A lot of times God will use the marriage relationship to provide healing for those broken places.” I don't recall considering conflict in my marriage, as an opportunity to heal. Although, in hindsight it was times of frustration and feeling at my wits end in my marriage that caused me to seek my own personal healing. When I think about it, that's so like God. He knows marriage is gong to bring our brokenness to the surface. He knows we're going to challenge each other and it's going to trigger all the areas where we need healing and He's fine with that. He's fine with it because in the process He's asking us to give that painful place, that brokenness to Him so He can heal it. The sooner we give it to Him the sooner we get to walk in freedom. God's heart is to heal us in the here and now. To build our trust, to show us His faithfulness and ability to Shepherd us well. A significant distinction that Leslie made is looking at the difference of what it means to have a strong identity based on who we are IN Christ AND who we are TO Christ. So good. I can't wait for you to hear that part. We took a look at abuse, submission, obedience and humbling but it's not the typical conversation that you may be used to hearing. Leslie believes that submission preached without including the importance of biblical leadership is not viable. Additionally, Leslie points to varying levels of trust between spouses and the fact that when the marriage vows (that were spoken between you and your spouse in front of witnesses) are broken then there's some work that needs to be done. Whether is was submission, obedience, humbleness, or abuse, no matter our topic, Leslie balances it with clarity, hope and God's heart for us and for marriage. I am confident that her message is going to encourage you to continue pursuing the heart of God and discovering His intention for marriage and the freedom He has for us as the individual He created you to be. We can't forget, that if we've professed the Son of God as our Lord and Savior, then He's made a vow to us. He'll never leave us nor forsake us especially in the painful places of life. I don't want to delay any longer, let's listen in so that we might get a glimpse of how to find God in our pain, specifically the broken places in marriage. -What are attachment styles? -How do attachment styles relate to codependency? -How can we navigate the positive and negative impacts of attachment styles on our relationship? Welcome to Episode 123! This week, I had the pleasure of speaking with Elizabeth Polinsky, LMC, all about attachment styles. Liz educates us on the four types of attachment style: avoidant, disorganized, anxious, and secure. She describes the similarities between anxious attachment style and codependency (since we often are anxious in our relationships, right?). We then explore how attachment styles impact our intimate romantic relationships. Liz shares about her work with couples and how she helps them learn to cope together, foster healthy dependency, and mprove communication. We conclude with hearing the initial steps Liz takes with her clients to help them navigate their attachment style in relationships. It's a must-listen! More on this week's guest: Elizabeth "Liz" Polinsky is a Certified Emotionally Focused Therapist and Marriage Counselor practicing in Virginia Beach, Virginia. As a military spouse, she has a special passion for working with military and veteran couples. She is also the host of The Communicate & Connect Podcast for Military Relationships. www.ElizabethPolinskyCounseling.com www.CommunicateAndConnectPodcast.com More deets on the episode: Liz shares her definition of codependency and describes why she doesn't like the term! However, she often sees it as a pattern where one partner gives up themselves to the other. She opens up about codependency in a former relationship where she worried about conflict, feared being rejected, and did her best not to rock the boat which led to dire consequences. We then focus on Liz's specialty of attachment styles. What is ‘attachment style?' Liz teaches us about anxious, avoidant, disorganized, and secure attachment styles. The one that is most aligned with codependency is anxious: a template for how I cope by being perfect, needed, caretaking, etc. And what happens when we are in relationships with others who have opposing attachment style? There's stress! Liz spells out how, due to the threat of loss, our attachment style comes “online” and we often end up in a pursue-withdraw pattern. How do we change this to a pattern of ‘coping with?' Liz works with her clients on becoming more flexible, emotionally aware, and cultivating a healthy dependency.
