Kelly Maloney is a Transgender woman and former boxing promoter once known by the name of Frank Maloney who famously managed Lennox Lewis - throughout his career to become the World Heavy Weight Champion. It came as a great shock to the boxing world and Kellie's family when she revealed she was transgender and decided to live her life as Kelly rather than Frank. In 2015 after years of hiding her truth from the world and in many instances herself. Kellie made the brave decision to transition to become female. Many of us go through life hiding because sometimes the consequences are too painful to face - that is why I loved speaking with this inspirational, courageous lady. I hope you enjoyed this podcast as much as I did. Liverpool's former super-middleweight contender Tony Dodson saw a lot in his 17-year career. He won 32, lost eight and drew once, fighting the likes of Carl Froch, Paul Smith (twice), Tony Quigley, Brian Barbosa and Ovil McKenzie. He'd been a top amateur and as a professional he was promoted, at one time or another, by Barry and Eddie Hearn, Frank Warren, Kellie Maloney and Hayemaker. Here, among many topics, he talks of his friendships with David Haye and Tony Bellew, a dangerous addiction to sleeping pills, depression, his battles to make 168lbs over two decades, his mother's battle with cancer, his son starting to box, mental health and why fighters need to take their career seriously from the start to finish.
Thank you for listening to another episode of Level Playing Field podcast. This week I have Kellie Maloney as my guest on the podcast. Episode 37 see's legendary boxing promoter Kellie Maloney join The Michael Anthony Show. Having left school at fifteen due to struggles with the at the time misunderstood dyslexia, Kellie was considered destined for failure by the society that surrounded the confused and isolated young boy. Raised by an Irish Catholic family in the working class Peckham, London, the priesthood seemed like Kellie's only chance, until she entered a boxing gym.Beginning to train and then eventually coach, Kellie discovered her vocation in the form of managing and promoting. Through resilience, grit and the aid of charisma, the Milwall diehard secured the services of boxing's "golden goose" in the form of Olympic gold medalist Lennox Lewis. From that moment on, the duo would change world boxing, becoming the sports most formidable partnership, selling out arenas world wide and registering wins against fighters such as Frank Bruno, Shannon Briggs and Evander Holyfield along the way. Lennox was tearing apart the heavyweight division, and Frankie Maloney was pulling the strings.Having achieved a life that would seem an impossibility to most and winning the unwinnable battle, Kellie's real fight was nowhere near over. Frank Maloney was a success story, but for Kellie, also a mythical one. In this open and fascinating interview, Kellie tells us how no money, wealth or adulation came close to the feeling of finally accepting who she was and "correcting the mistake made at birth" that was her male gender. Kellie also touches on a variety of other subjects including coping with the tragic loss of former client and friend Darren Sutherland. The subject of transgender is one that both polarizes and dominates modern society. To hear from somebody that has lived through it whilst operating in such a masculine and somewhat stubborn environment makes for an intriguing listen.Available now on iTunes, Spotify and SoundCloud.Links to all three in bio.Support the show (https://open.spotify.com/show/0sP68DtD7qCl4Rs2wGKJD4)
For Kellie Maloney, boxing seemed to be in the blood. In fact, it was a passion that took her from an amateur club as a schoolchild to managing Lennox Lewis and a whole stable of other world champions - but away from the ring, Kellie was struggling with her true self. You see, she was born as Frank - and on this episode of the podcast, we talk about the journey that has taken Kellie to where she is now. It's not always an easy listen, as Kellie speaks frankly about how long it took her to accept herself - and for others to accept her as well. But we promise, we think it's one you'll want to stick with - and that you'll remember for a long time. WANT TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT OUR GUEST? It was Ladies’ Day on the show (Nat included), and Ray was joined by comedians Ria Lina and Massive Dad, and Kellie Maloney joined him to speak about her new autobiography ‘Frankly Kellie’. He also caught up with assistant producer Adam who couldn’t be bothered to come in as he had just got back from Glastonbury. He didn’t sound like he’d fully recovered. The Copa America is taking place in Chile, and it is inspiring a host of novel and inventive ways for activists to protest about governmental proposals over education reform. In a world where sportsmen shy away from engaging in politics, the public expect Chile’s national team players to engage, and they do. We look at how this soccer mad nation has put a footballing spin on demonstrations of civil disobedience to highlight an issue that has brought previous governments down. What They Did Next: Wimbledon Special American David Wheaton reached number 12 in the world, he won over $5 million in prize money and at Wimbledon in 1991 he beat Andre Agassi and Ivan Lendl on the way to a semi-final appearance. In the latest in our series "What they did Next!?" He speaks to us from his home in Minnesota on a new career as an author and Christian Radio show host. Quite a lot according to Steve Crossman who has been in the Dutch city which hosts this year’s Grand Depart. We speak to boxing promoter Kellie Maloney who successfully underwent gender realignment surgery earlier this year, having spent most of her life as Frank Maloney. Could she now spearhead a new era in boxing? Football Columbia A far cry from the goings on at FIFA, this is a reminder of how significant a role football can play in people's lives. For a country that has been at the centre of a half century civil war between the government and FARC rebels, Colombia has recovered well in recent decades. Partly because of community projects like the one in the northern Colombian city of Bucaramanga, which helps local children participate in football, while also teaching them other skills to take into their adult lives Sporting Witness… PHOTO: Students and teachers protesting against what they call inadequate education reforms, kick balls just hours before the kick-off of the Chile 2015 Copa America tournament, in Santiago (CREDIT: PABLO PORCIUNCULA/AFP/Getty Images)

5 live Breakfast got reaction to Kellie Maloney's story. The former boxing promoter, known then as Frank Maloney, is preparing to undergo sex change surgery and Heather Ashton from TG Pals, - who's working with her - says trans-gender people are the 'last to get equality and be socially accepted'.
