St. Patrick might be the most famous of the Irish saints...but he's far from the most interesting. In 2023, St. Brigid's Day was decreed a National Holiday in Ireland to honor Brigid. Over the millennia, this legendary woman has evolved into a figure encompassing myth, holy legend, pagan icon, and now modern feminist symbol. But who was Brigid, really? To answer that question, travel writer Nicola Brady set off around Ireland to see how she's celebrated, and she found that there's not one simple answer. Because, as with everything in Ireland, you never know quite what's around the corner. Listen for a story that takes you into forests and through time, from the windswept hills of Downpatrick to ancient cathedrals of Kildare. Ireland is seen as a versatile destination, suitable for visits year-round with scenery and a sense of exploration - some of the top reasons for coming here. According to Tourism Ireland's latest research, interest in visiting Ireland is on the rise. Alice Mansergh, the Chief Executive of Tourism Ireland tells us more.
Alice Mansergh, a city girl with a love for the countryside, attended school in Dublin but spent her weekends on the family farm in Tipperary, where she enjoyed fruit picking and digging potatoes. After graduating from Trinity College Dublin with a degree in English and Irish literature, she took a year to travel around Ireland and worked on a novel that she admits remains unfinished and gathering dust - “It's gathering dust somewhere, and maybe I'll go back to it with a distance of time”. Her career took a different direction when she joined Google, spending 19 years rising from a startup role to leading Google Ads' UK operations, setting up an office in Hyderabad, India, and overseeing Google Chrome's marketing across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. Now, as CEO of Tourism Ireland, she's using her experience to position Ireland as a top global tourism destination. In this episode of The EY Podcast: CEO Outlook Series, Alice Mansergh, the CEO of Tourism Ireland, joins host Richard Curran to discuss her journey from tech to the tourism world. Alice shares her vision for Tourism Ireland, the importance of sustainability, and how digital innovation plays a role in marketing Ireland to the world. They also discuss:- Over-tourism - A headline of the summer across other destinations. - Emerging world of the internet - “Reinventing the whole world of advertising, marketing and for consumers in e-commerce”.- Marketing - both an art and a science- Overseas tourism - It's all about increasing the value of overseas tourism to the island of Ireland and focusing on the regional/seasonal spread.- Finding those hooks - ‘The home of Halloween' campaign.- Digital innovation - “When those followers interact with us, when they comment or like what we're posting, that, of course, amplifies everything”.- The hotel supply/accommodation crisis and new regulations.- Screen Tourism - “We leverage off that in our marketing”.- Sustainability - Making sense of every seat on every plane- AI in marketing and tourism – how it is standard now on digital platforms that you would be using AI based tools.
Today we're diving into the heart of the Island of Ireland, its Legends and Landscapes, where every cliff, hill and glen whispers stories from a time long past. To get there is just a short flight or ferry ride from Great Britain, and yet arriving can feel like stepping into another world of history, mystery and breathtaking beauty. As Halloween approaches, there's no better time to delve into Ireland's ancient traditions. Did you know that the Island of Ireland is the birthplace of Halloween? It originates from the Celtic festival of Samhain, which marks the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter and even today the spirit of Samhain lingers, with festivals and celebrations that pay homage to the old ways.To help us explore some more of Ireland's incredible locations and the stories behind them, I'm joined by John O'Ceallaigh, one of our best loved travel journalists and editors, and an Ireland native from Galway on the west coast of Ireland. John's deep connection to his country, and his experience writing about it, makes him the perfect guide for our journey today. We're going to hear his Irish travel diaries today, from the wild beauty of Connemara and charming village of Roundstone to the Wild Atlantic Way's luxurious coastal castles, and windswept islands, like Aran and Achill, taking in the sights, tastes and sounds along the way because of course Ireland is a feast for all senses. Brought to you in partnership with Tripadvisor and Tourism Ireland, whether you're planning your next adventure or simply dreaming of distant shores, let this episode be your gateway to Ireland's legendary landscapes.
Rose Greene began her culinary career on a rapidly ascending yet predictable trajectory—a four year culinary arts course followed by many years working in Michelin starred kitchens around the world—before realizing that the nightly slog just wasn't for her. The never-ending long hours, shady sourcing of produce, and restaurants whose models rely on unpaid labor made her rethink her approach to food and a life in the industry. Then she met her partner Margaux, discovered the wonders of fermentation, and decided to slow down and move forward on her own terms. Together they started 4 Hands Food Studio and haven't looked back.We spoke with Rose about the importance of a work/life balance; food as nourishment; building her own home; and growing a business that fits your life instead of the other way around.Dyed Green is a project of Bog & Thunder, whose mission is to highlight the best of Irish food and culture, through food tours, events, and media. While Ireland's rolling green hills are lovely to look at, they reflect a country whose landscape has been dramatically changed over many years. You may not even know that Ireland is the most deforested country in Europe. But what is Ireland's “natural” landscape, and what does that even mean? For this week's show, we spoke with Matt Smith, the manager of Hometree, a dynamic organization based in Ennistymon, County Clare, dedicated to planting more native trees into the Irish landscape. Hometree is not your average reforestation program, however! Built on a solid foundation of environmental science, they eschew carbon credit schemes, and their work incorporates community involvement, education & outreach—and even a healthy dose of Irish culture. In this conversation with Matt, we discuss the need for speed in our cultural shift towards thoughtful tree-planting schemes; the concept of rewilding as applied to the landscape; how Hometree has grown from a community garden project to the force of nature it is today; and the role that hope can play in the face of the unfolding climate crisis.Dyed Green is a project of Bog & Thunder, whose mission is to highlight the best of Irish food and culture, through food tours, events, and media. Discover the spookier side of the Emerald Isle and learn about mystical myths, folklore, fire and feasting, as nights draw in and darkness descends. As part of our special Ireland destination series, we travel to Ireland to explore Halloween's Irish roots and learn more about Samhain - one of the four main festivals of the Gaelic calendar. Let me and producer Luke take you on an immersive journey to County Meath, in Ireland's ancient east, to discover the origins of Halloween at the Púca festival, which takes place every year at the end of October. Named after a shape-shifting character from Celtic folklore - the Púca (pronounced poo-kuh), this fun festival celebrates the ancient traditions of Samhain and welcomes the strange and mischievous creatures in some of Ireland's most historic places. It's an invitation to enjoy music, myth, food, folklore, fire, feasting and merriment in the country where Halloween began. So get ready for spooky stories, Halloween chills and Púca festivities. Chef Paul Cunningham, based in Dundrum, County Down, walks the walk like no chef we've ever met before. The owner of “slow food fast food” Scopers in Dundrum Village and the upscale pop-up Mourne Larder, Cunningham sources all of his food from within a 15 mile radius and never sets foot in a grocery store. His business model puts his ethos into practice in a way we've never seen, and he's successfully bridging the gap between consumers and thoughtfully grown, regenerative food at affordable price points—all while shining a spotlight on the Mournes where he was raised and creating insanely delicious, Michelin quality cuisine. We spoke to Paul about what ethical sourcing looks like in practice; making local, sustainable food approachable & affordable food for the average diner; how chefs have a responsibility to be stewards of the land; secret dining; and the limits of growth for a successful business.Photo courtesy of Paul Cunningham.Dyed Green is a project of Bog & Thunder, whose mission is to highlight the best of Irish food and culture, through food tours, events, and media. Ann recaps the top golf stories and then focuses on Golfing in Ireland. Alison Metcalfe, Tourism Ireland, talks about the best way to plan a trip, the upcoming Championships that Ireland is hosting, why Ireland produces so many top golfers and more. Tiernan Byrne of Club Choice Ireland, talks about the Southeast, 'Golf in Ireland's Ancient East.'
Recorded several days early, hosts Alex Lauzon and Michael Russell give their early thoughts on the Open Championship, plus share their exciting itinerary they are currently experiencing this week in Ireland. Just because we recorded this early doesn't mean Alex doesn't crown a champion for the Open. Hint: it's not a player (1:46). The guys break down the exciting week they're in the middle of, thanks to Tourism Ireland, including a round at the 2006 Ryder Cup course, The K Club (5:22). The TOUR heads to the 3M Open next, where it's a sleepy field but the real estate next to the course is fire (11:16). In Tuned In, Michael is watching the original Justified with Timothy Olyphant, while Alex is choosing his early favorites for the Emmys (12:58). This week's conversation is the one that started it all. David Connellan of Golf Ireland and Tourism Ireland chatted with Alex back in January at the PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando, and it's only fitting to be reminded of what we dreamed about experiencing back than that we're getting in droves now (15:05). Alex is ready for the start of the NFL Preseason, while Michael wonders if his Giants or Alex's Patriots have a better chance of making the playoffs (39:25). As the guys #AlwaysEndWithFood, it's all about what's going in our mouths in Ireland (41:22). Support our friends!
