It's been far too long. GTCC members the world over have been writing in to ask: when will he be back? Well, he's back. Yes, Ambassador De Pluski is back on the pod - and he's back in action with G. The Volta ao Algarve kicks off this week and the duo will be tackling the climbs of southern Portugal against the likes of Roglic, Vingegaard and Wout van Aert. It should be a cracker. With De Pluski back on the pod, we thought we'd take the opportunity to pick his brain and hold our first GTCC preview of the season. Can Pog win San Remo? Will he ride Roubaix? Can Vingegaard reclaim his Tour throne? Why is Roglic riding the Giro? There's lots to discuss and boy oh boy are we excited for the 2025 season. In the land of ROUVY, a new update went live this week which allows full compatibility with Zwift hardware on the platform. Until now, the Ride plus Click and Cog were only compatible with Zwift software. However, with the introduction of ROUVY's virtual shifting compatibility, riders using Zwift hardware can now access ROUVY software and ride any of the 1,500+ immersive routes on the app. Riders will have full use of all 24 virtual gears, which are displayed on-screen to indicate their current gear status, alongside the already existing on-screen data including power, heart rate and cadence. If you've been waiting for this tweak to give ROUVY a try then use our code GTCC1M for a free month on us when you sign up. See you next week. Joining Anna on the podcast this week is the legendary dancer and choreographer Dame Arlene Phillips. From humble beginnings in Manchester, she ended up at dance school in London, where she worked as a live-in nanny for none other than film director Ridley Scott in order to get by. From there, she gained stratospheric success in dance and choreography - and her groundbreaking dance troupe, Hot Gossip, made her a household name in the 70s.As a choreographer and director, her credits include countless shows in the West End, on Broadway, and in film - and her music video credits read like the playlist for the greatest party of all time: Elton John, Donna Summer, Pet Shop Boys, Whitney Houston…you name it, she's worked with them. She was one of the original judges on Strictly Come Dancing, and she even braved the jungle on I'm A Celebrity...Arlene is now in her 80s and is still working on musicals like Guys and Dolls and Grease. She talks to Anna about how dance is the greatest passion of her life and what it brings to her, how social standards and expectations for women are unfair, particularly when they get older, and what ambition looks like for her now at 81. ”Good day, dearest ‘OwlHeads'”. I pray you are all preening your feathers magnificently. I offer you here today Episode 43 of my songwriter podcast series … where my song vaults and archives are again raided for my rare demos, odds and sods and sonic misfits. This month's show features a little gem I concocted with the “Go West” boys, Richard Drummie and Peter Cox; I do remember quite special studio sessions with those lads. I'll play you a song I'm extremely proud of that I demoed with Earth, Wind and Fire's majestic vocalist Philip Bailey at the legendary EWF studios, “The Complex”, in LA. Great memories of working with a true gentleman of soul music. And I'll play you a demo of another amazing singer that I worked and wrote with, the peerless John Waite when he was leading the rock band “Bad English”. It's a spontaneous, raw, one-day home demo that, I have to say, gives the actual final master recording a damn good run for its money! There'll be a truly vintage retro playback of one of the first demos I ever wrote and recorded with my songwriter partner Brian Fairweather back in London in the late, hazy 1970s … a mono analog 2 track Revox recording of a song eventually recorded (if you can believe this) by the British “The Kenny Everett Video Show” dance troupe, “Hot Gossip”. I'm being very brave here, because the demo is as homemade and sonically compromised as can be imagined. Yet, weirdly, I still think Huey Lewis and the News back in the day could have done a great job with it!

Today's show was BRAVO, INDIA, GOLF. No, the guys weren't celebrating the achievements of PGA tour golfer Anirban Lahiri: they announced that 'The Elis James and John Robins Tax Year Calendar' in aid of Comic Relief is finally available to purchase! Whilst the value of the pound was only marginally affected by the announcement it's safe to say that the orders came flying in, showing once again how passionate the people of the UK are about TAX. Away from all the calendar chat there was a Made Up Game for the linguistics fans amongst you, the guys aired out some more Hot Gossip, Adrian shares some listeners' poetry to rival Producer Dave, and a real-life New Yorker dials in from his midtown loft on the Upper West Side! - To get hold of YOUR copy of the UK's hottest piece of tax merchandise, you just need to head to bbc.co.uk/elisandjohn where you can also find the terms and conditions and privacy notice. Once there, you just need to click on the ‘Tax Calendar' link, and that'll take you straight to the order page. The calendar costs £12.99 including postage, with a minimum of £4 from each sale being donated to registered charity Comic Relief and will help to support people who are facing the toughest times of their lives. The money raised will help people struggling with the cost-of-living crisis and tackle issues such as homelessness, mental health problems, and food poverty. The calendars will be available to buy until 31st March 2023, so act fast to make sure you don't miss out on your very own piece of tax history!
A Way with Words — language, linguistics, and callers from all over
Gossip goes by many names: the poop, the scoop, the lowdown, the dope, the scuttlebutt, the 411, the grapes, the gore, and hot tea. Plus, John Donne's love poems are among the greatest in the English language, even as they're famously difficult to unravel. A new biography hails the genius of the man who penned the phrases no man is an island and for whom the bell tolls. And Murphy's Law states that anything that can go wrong, will go wrong. But what about Muphry's Law? Also: how to organize your bookshelves, rizz, potch in tuchis, conkerbell, pronouncing help like hope, spermologer, sweet tea vs. unsweet tea, work brickle, collywobbles, and a puzzle that will test your wits -- and patience. If the aim of a usual Elis and John show is to deliver ‘your classic 4-4-2' (anecdote over the top, punchline flick-on, good radio bell finish), today felt more like an adventurous 5-2-1-2 set up. A formation that could bring the whole house of cards tumbling down, but if implemented successfully, it could be beautiful. Pivotal wing backs shuttling on the overlap between classic comedy defence and more exotic consumer advice interpretation attack. New features were given a runout (Hot Gossip), old favourites returned to the side (Backing Britain), some regulars adopted a new position and cameo role before full time (Petty Parliament) and the big man up front was brought on for the last 20 (Martin Lewis). And by jove, the gaffer only went and pulled it off. Long-winded, half-baked analogies aside, another rip-roaring show awaits, with the right honourable Martin Lewis CBE proving yet again what a thoroughly top chap he is. Enjoy.
In a return to scenes reminiscent of 2020, today's show saw Elis, John and Producer Dave broadcasting from a whole host of exotic locations; such as Cardiff, London and Cheadle Hulme. There isn't a soul on earth who knows how radio actually works, so let's just say it's thanks to the magic of "technology" that the guys were able to broadcast to you the you the listener. And yes, of course there was going to be the odd hiccup - but isn't that what's fun about live radio? There was an all-time great Shame Well, a Made Up Game right in Dave's wheelhouse, some more listener Hot Gossip... and Elis makes a catastrophic error whilst channelling his inner Chingford. (Disclaimer: head to the 5 Live website for the full, CORRECT schedule.)
Arlene Philips began her career as the leader of the famous dance troupe Hot Gossip, but it was her inclusion in the first series of Strictly Come Dancing that made her an instantly recognizable face across the UK. Suggestion Sunday: Gossip is good for ya, actually. According to science, 60% of our conversations involve gossip of some sort + we begin gossiping for social relationships by the age of 5. That said, our reasonings can vary + change the impact of our gossip tremendously, as a result. There's a fine line between venting + ruining reputations. How to gossip better:Why am I sharing this now? To potentially to protect someone? or to make a deeper connection with someone? or are you venting? or stirring the pot? jealous? hurt? angry? bored? But if you're spreading this just to be a dick? Don't. People will see through it eventually + lose trust for you. Is this true, + is it okay for you to share? It's not cool to betray someone's trust, just to sound like you 'know some shit about some shit' or whatever. What is the best case scenario from sharing this? Worst case scenario? Who will be affected? Anyone? How so?Check out our instagram for a bonus suggestion on how to get out of gossip-y conversations you'd rather not be in. Tune in there or on youtube.com/juliemerica to check it out! Please rate this 5 stars on apple podcasts if you haven't already.
