Philly McMahon has lived, and living a remarkable life. Under Pat Gilroy and Jim Gavin he thrived. We dig deep into both managers- what they brought and why they were different. Gavin is specifically interesting. Bringing the Dublin team to the Battle of the Somme in France and camping in an army barracks. The team to sleep outside and work life out for themselves. He was trying to pick his captain. Remarkable insight into Jim Gavin as a manager. Born in Ballymun, his Father joined the IRA, was shot and escaped from a court appearance. He spent 30 years on the run. His travels to Belfast on the train, his father was his ‘Uncle Frank' From that background- one of the most successful footballers burst into life. At underage and senior level Philly started life as a forward before reaching his true calling in the full-back line. Eight All-Irelands with Dublin, 12 Leinster titles, Five Allianz League titles and double All-star. He was also nominated for Player-of-the-year but didn't get it. Why? The Kieran Donaghy incident possibly. Does Philly regret it? We ask him. We're not so sure about the answer. There's more in this feature length episode of the GAA Social. His best player, marking Colm Cooper, the Aidan O'Shea incident still irks. There's more. What his father had in his wallet that was found a year after he died and who (apart from Dublin) Philly would like to see win the All-Ireland. Will he be manager someday? Could it be Antrim? There's also drugs, its problem in society and the impact of the death of his brother. It's Philly McMahon on the GAA Social with Thomas Niblock & Oisin McConville

Kieran Donaghy will be well known to listeners for his exploits as an All-Star player both on the football pitches and basketball courts of Ireland for the bones of nearly 20 years. In this episode he takes us through his fledgling coaching career having coached and managed Tralee IT in Sigerson cup football, as a performance coach with the Galway hurlers and currently as a forwards coach under Kieran McGeeney with the Armagh senior football team. He also has an interesting perspective on children's sport given his involvement in running hugely popular basketball / football camps for hundreds of kids each year. Our attention in Episode 3 turns to the classroom, exploring what teaching and learning methods can effectively address the climate crisis. Scott Thornbury charts the history of ‘green pedagogy', discussing what kind of teaching approaches are not only effective for language teaching, but are also climate positive. The importance of the outside world inside the classroom is also the theme of From the Field, where we visit Voice in Nature English. This school, situated in China's Yunnan province, inspires its students to use the natural world as a stimulus for language learning. In our second interview, Kieran Donaghy investigates the use of the visual in climate-related ELT materials, and Ceri Jones talks more generally about how ELT Footprint are trying to mainstream climate messages in language teaching. The Green Glossary focuses on the word ‘ecocide', which has a longer history than you might imagine, and how prefixes and suffixes can be used for language awareness and development. We talk booze, having the dog in ya, naughty steps, Love Island, pasta and pesto and a really bold elf on the shelf. At the end we swapped books -  I'm 40 pages in to What Do You Think of That, and I love it.
