Morley's Mouthfuls: The ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza has yet again dominated much of the political discourse this week. The calls for Israeli war bonds to be moved from the Irish Central Bank seemed to have been heard by Israel, as they moved authorisation to another country in the EU, namely Luxembourg. However, this act is a drop in the ocean compared to what needs to happen at a political level according to many campaigners, activists and human rights experts. One Galway woman who has very much throw herself into Palestinian solidarity and aid efforts is Salthill poet Sarah Clancy. The flotilla aims to deliver aid to the population in Gaza, something which has not been allowed to happen on several occasions and is against international law. We followed this story up later in the week with the Galway Palestine Solidarity Campaign who will hold The West's Awake Rally for the cause this weekend. They want to see action and pressure brought to bear on Israel so that vital humanitarian aid can be delivered and a prevention of further loss of lives. One Palestinian shared his horror story of escaping the war torn region, his gratitude to make it safely to Ireland for medical treatment of his family and the personal losses he has experienced along the way. It remains to be seen what if anything will trigger a dialogue between Israel and Hamas. Meanwhile, while we are all used to complaining about the traffic in and around Galway City, one contributor to the show had a nightmare ordeal in a taxi. Maggie Regan and her friend got into a taxi, only for the driver to first go the wrong way and then verbally abuse them. She recalled the night on Galway Talks to a huge reaction and former taxi man and Fine Gael Cllr. Frank Fahy gave some advice on best practice to prevent and or deal with a situation like this in the future. While Frank contested that incidents like these were rare we did get an avalanche of texts in venting similar bad experiences. Cllr. Fahy also pointed out the fact that some taxi drivers are the subject to both verbal and physical abuse and that there are serious responsibilities and dangers with the profession, particularly those who drive night shifts. Galway GAA announced that Padraic Joyce will get a two year extension as manager of the senior football team, meaning the Killererin man will be at the helm until the end of the 2028 season. John Divilly has stepped away from the fray meaning there will be gaps to fill in the backroom team over the off season. With many high profile names in the mix it will be interesting to see will someone come through the ranks locally or will an outside name like Kieran Donaghy link in with the tribes. Ultimately, that will be a decision for Padraic Joyce. The housing situation was under the microscope again this week. Following on from the fact that homelessness figures reached another record high last week, we had the compounding effect of Galway being among the worst areas when it comes to dereliction and vacancy. Cllr Niall McNeilis of the Labour Party said that while Government had committed funding to tackle vacant homes, it is a drop in the ocean compared to the investment needed. We had a great day out in Kilnadeema Leitrim for our Community Matters programme from Finnerty's Mills. Next up is Corr Na Mona next Friday. Join us again for Galway Talks on Monday where our Galway Great after 11am is Jarlath McDonagh of Turloughmore.
Health issues were to the fore in more ways than one this week. There was a very public back and forth between the Health Minister Jennifer Carroll MacNeill and BAM in relation to the National Children's Hospital. Closer to home on Galway Talks we focused in on the Rare Diseases Strategy which is being developed for the next five years up to 2030. There are calls for expansion of rare diseases tested for, but also reliability of said tests. While plans and strategies are important, ultimately it is delivery of changes and implementations of health recommendations that will make differences on the ground. We got to see the real human impact of that when Renmore mother Roisin Costello joined us alongside Anne Lawlor, a founding member and chair of 22q Ireland. Very poignantly at the end of the interview Roisin laid bare that due to inaction on implementing changes other families have gone through similar situations to her family as genetic anomalies have not been caught by the screening system. She wants to see and has renewed her calls for a centralised screening lab here in Ireland so that nothing is missed by health officials. Giving families the medical advice they need by making them aware of all the factors going into subsequent pregnancies. BreastCheck missing screening targets for a second year running also made headlines locally here in Galway. We covered it with Prof. Michael Kerin who is over the cancer programme locally and Edel Shovlin the COO of the Irish Cancer Society. Staffing dominated the changes needed alongside implementation of recommendations and completed promised infrastructure projects. In more positive news for service users and family members in Loughrea, the Seven Springs Day Centre fully reopened this week following a long campaign from the Loughrea Concerned Citizens Group. Mattie Quinn heralded the reopening and put it down to people power, adding that “they won't be going away” anytime soon. The Presidential election has remained in the focus and this week on Galway Bay FM we heard calls for grassroots Fianna Fáil members to be given a say in who will contest the race for the Áras. Loughrea area Cllr. Michael Regan hit out at the top brass of the party and expressed his support for Eamon O'Cuív. He wants to see a democratic process opened up without delay. We should hear more on the next moves from Fianna Fáil next week when the Taoiseach discusses options with the parliamentary party. Meanwhile, two Ministers from the party were on Inis Oírr this week to announce the first announcement of the NDP spending ahead of Budget 2026. The island will benefit from over 35 million euro investment in its pier, some 20 years on from when the project became one of the many victims from the financial downturn. Better late than ever and a shock to islanders, planning will now begin in earnest to get the most out of this massive infrastructural boost to the area. Don't forget we are out and about on Friday next the 5th of September for Community Matters! We will be covering Kilnadeema Leitrim from Finnerty's Mills in the heart of Southeast Galway. Join us on the morning between 9am-12pm if you are in the area. This year marks ten years of AIB's sponsorship of the All Ireland Football Championship. To mark the occasion, OTB's GAA correspondent Tommy Rooney spoke to Galway's Rob Finnerty.
AIB, proud sponsors of the club and county, has been joined by Paul Geaney (Kerry), Robert Finnerty (Galway), Ethan Rafferty (Armagh) and Sam Mulroy (Louth) for the launch of the 2025 AIB GAA All-Ireland Senior Football Championships. This year marks a significant milestone as AIB celebrates its 10th year as sponsor of the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship, a decade of unwavering support for Gaelic Games. This year promises to be a game-changer, as the new rules of Gaelic Football redefine the championship. AIB's commitment to the players remains steadfast, celebrating the skill, dedication, and unwavering commitment that embody #TheToughest. The 2025 AIB All-Ireland Senior Football Championship season promises to be one of the most intriguing yet, with significant rule changes adding a layer of strategic complexity and the unknown. This year, the Championship takes on the atmosphere of a high-stakes chess match, where every move and adaptation will be crucial. The new rules demand a fresh approach, mirroring the unpredictable nature of the game and the season ahead. As AIB marks its 10th year sponsoring the AIB GAA All-Ireland Senior Football Championships, we celebrate the players, fans, and volunteers who embody the spirit of Gaelic Games. Throughout this decade, AIB has shone a spotlight on the dedication and resilience of inter-county footballers, crafting innovative content that highlights why they are some of #TheToughest. AIB remains committed to supporting Gaelic Games across the country at all levels, having renewed its sponsorship of both the AIB GAA All-Ireland Senior Football Championships and AIB Club Championships until 2028. AIB is joined by a host of inter-county giants to launch the Championships today, including Robert Finnerty, who will be hoping to go one step further with the Tribesman this year having been beaten by Armagh in last year's All-Ireland final. Galway begin the 2025 championship away to New York on the 6th of April. Before heading to the United States, Galway's Robert Finnerty caught up with Galway Bay FM's Jonathan Higgins.

Presentation Secondary School, Kilkenny 2-0 Presentation College, Athenry Roisin Foley (50), Emily Phelan (67) Two second half goals ensured Cup success for Presentation Secondary School, Kilkenny over defending Champions Presentation College, Athenry in a sun-soaked Athlone Town AFC this afternoon (March 19). It's been some season for the Kilkenny kingpins as this victory confirmed a Cup double for the girls with their Senior crew capturing the National title five weeks ago in the same venue with six of the Junior squad involved in that showpiece. It was a case of taking their chances when they came with a sublime effort from Roisin FOLEY to open her account for Kilkenny with twenty minutes of the game remaining. Vice Captain Emily PHELAN made sure of the win three minutes from time when she saw her effort go in off the keeper. Kilkenny made the brighter start to the contest with Hannah Griffey forcing a brilliant save from Jane Brennan with 13 minutes on the clock. Towards the latter stages of the first half, it was Athenry that dominated most of the possession but just couldn't get the ball on target as the teams went in goalless at the break. Within four minutes, Kilkenny broke the deadlock with a superb set piece from Roisin FOLEY that sailed over the head of Brennan and into the top corner, leaving the Galway shot-stopper no chance. The Galway side had a great opportunity to draw level a few moments later when Niamh Kilgannon had a glancing header goal bound only for Isabelle Carroll to produce a top class save at the near post to deny the youngster. Noone, Duffy and McNamara had half chances blocked down with some solid defensive play from Presentation, Kilkenny. The killer blow for Athenry came three minutes from time when Emily PHELAN'S cross slipped through the hands of Brennan and in for Kilkenny's second of the afternoon. After the game, Presentation College manager Joe Finnerty spoke to Galway Bay FM's Mike Rafferty. == PRESENTATION SECONDARY SCHOOOL, KILKENNY | Isabelle Carroll, Anna Morrissey, Roisin Foley, Hannah Griffey, Maria Ryan, Ellie Barron, Kate Ryan, Olivia Dunphy ©, Emily Phelan ©, Meadhbh Doherty, Ellen Treacy SUBS USED | Kate Dalton for Treacy (46) Amy O'Shea for Barron (46). Send us a textIn this week's episode, we are joined by Battalion Chief Pete Finnerty to talk about his experience being one of the first BCs on the scene of the Eaton Fire. This conversation includes some insight into the mysterious world of what a BC actually does and what they are thinking about and preparing for en route to an incident, all alone in their "fire SUV".
