The Jay Franze Show: Your backstage pass to the entertainment industry
Send us a textEver wonder what it's like to stand backstage with rock legends? Jay takes us on a nostalgic journey to his youth when he and "Long-Haired Mark" watched Van Halen perform from the side stage during the Monsters of Rock tour. These personal memories frame a fascinating discussion about how band relationships evolve – and sometimes dissolve – over time, with Van Halen's members unable to reunite even for a tribute to Eddie Van Halen after his passing. The music industry conversation spans generations of artists, from established acts to emerging talents. We dive into Hailstorm's upcoming album "Everest," Linkin Park's reinvention with a female vocalist, and Metallica's massive world tour featuring an eclectic mix of supporting acts. As we discuss Shaboosie's record-breaking 40 weeks at #1 on the Billboard Hot Country charts and the star-studded performances at Stagecoach Festival, the show explores how artists continuously evolve while staying connected to their roots. The heart of the episode centers on our listeners' passionate responses to the question: "What cover song is better than the original?" From Disturbed's hauntingly powerful version of "Sound of Silence" to Guns N' Roses' energetic take on "Live and Let Die," the conversation reveals how artists transform familiar works into something uniquely their own. We also spotlight independent duo Circe, examining how their DIY approach to music creation represents the changing landscape of artist development in today's industry.Whether you're a longtime music fan or simply curious about the stories behind the songs, this episode offers a genuine, unfiltered look at the creative forces that shape the soundtrack of our lives. The Jay Franze Show: Your backstage pass to the entertainment industry
Send us a textStep behind the curtain of the music industry with Jay Franze and Tiffany Mason as they blend personal stories, industry expertise, and entertaining banter in this captivating episode. Jay shares a touching memory of introducing his family to rock band Hailstorm, revealing how lead singer Lizzy Hale made a special connection with his daughter that continued years later. The hosts then offer their unfiltered take on Hailstorm's new single "Darkness Always Wins," appreciating the band's talent while questioning the experimental direction of this particular track. The conversation naturally flows through a landscape of music news, from Dave Grohl's surprise Coachella appearance to Billy Idol's collaboration with Avril Lavigne and Alice Cooper's reunion with his original band after five decades. Throughout these discussions, Jay's deep industry knowledge shines through, particularly when he breaks down what makes truly great music: the perfect combination of songwriting, performance, and production. What truly sets this episode apart is the hosts' chemistry and willingness to get personal. Their "Question of the Day" segment asking for the best songs to "make whoopee to" generates hilarious responses from listeners, ranging from Nora Jones's romantic ballads to Metallica's aggressive "Enter Sandman." This playful interaction perfectly balances the more technical discussion where Jay explains different mixing philosophies, comparing the clean precision of engineers like Mike Shipley with the rawer "leave it all in" approach of others.Whether you're a music industry professional, an aspiring artist, or simply someone who appreciates the stories behind the songs, this episode delivers entertainment, education, and inspiration. As Tiffany reminds us at the end: "Every track you love was once just an idea. Don't be afraid to chase yours."LinksJay Franze: https://JayFranze.comVirtually You: https://www.virtuallyyouva.com/ Support the show

It is a message increasingly echoed from the nation's pulpits, presented as common-sense decency and virtue. Calls for “radical non-violence” are routinely endowed with the imprimatur of religious doctrine. But what if such teachings were misguided, even damaging? What if the potential of a citizenry to exercise force against violent criminals and tyrannical governments is not just compatible with church teaching, but flows from the very heart of Biblical faith and reason? What if the freedoms we treasure are intimately tied to the power to resist violent coercion? This is the long-overdue case John Zmirak makes with stunning clarity and conviction in No Second Amendment, No First. A Yale-educated journalist and former college professor, Zmirak shows how the right of self-defense against authoritarian government was affirmed in both the Old and New Testaments, is implied in Natural Law, and has been part of Church tradition over the centuries. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Check out our ACU Patreon page: https://www.patreon.com/ACUPodcast HELP ACU SPREAD THE WORD! Interview with Binnie Klein of In These Trees and Tartie In These Trees is an alternative indie music project led by Binnie Klein. Klein's lyrical stories are suffused with human longing and memory, and pair gracefully with soulful melodies from the artists who perform her work. With her extensive background in music as a radio DJ and a career in writing, Klein seeks to elevate her words through collaboration with rising artists. "Orchard" is her premier single inspired by her audio memoir, 10 Days in Newark, with music by Australian artist, Tartie. In These Trees and Tartie now have 5 singles out (Orchard, Sky, Ocean, Quiver, Hailstorm, and Ablaze). The album, THE QUIVER, is planned for November 2023. As a long-time DJ at free-form radio station WPKN, Binnie receives many promotional CD's from hopeful artists. She tries to listen to most of them, just in case there is a gem that will fit with her show's eclectic mix. When Australian singer/songwriter Tartie sent a few tunes, Binnie chose “Winter's Girl” to play on her show. The two women, decades apart in age, began to chat on Zoom — about dogs, about music, about politics, finding a wonderful symmetry. Binnie encouraged Tartie to finish up a rough mix of “Ablaze,” about the Australian wildfires, and asked if Tartie might take a look at some lyrics. “Orchard” emerged from that question, and a great geographic distance, and a pandemic — the song, and many others -- began to take shape, with help from producer David Baron of Sun Mountain Studios. https://www.inthesetrees.com

Dogs Are Smarter Than People: Writing Life, Marriage and Motivation
Brainstorming . . . Even the word sounds a little creepy. Like there is a storm inside your brain. It sounds... It sounds sort of violent and hazardous and windy. In this podcast, we talk about the storms inside our brain and how those storms can become story ideas. Five Ways To Get Story Ideas Some authors have a really hard time just getting an idea for a new story. They burn out. They can't find anything that they think is 'good enough.' They just don't know where to start and that lack of a start makes them blocked. This is so sad! There are ways to fight it. One Way To Storm is BY Admiring Other's Work Think about ways that other people's stories influence you. If you're an Outlander fan, think about why. If you were to write your own kind of time travel story would it be like that? With a lot of spanking and stuff? Or something totally different. How would it be different? Another Way to Incite a Hailstorm of Questions Ask your self questions. It's all about 'What if?' What if Trump wasn't president in 2018? What if everyone had blue hair? What if the earth had two moons? What if dogs were really space aliens? Pogie the Dog: Wait. You mean they aren't? Carrie the Human: No, buddy... I mean... I don't think so? Third Way Where the Wind Is So Strong It Pushes Images into you Some of my best ideas have come on a treadmill watching the country music network or MTV or some random YouTube channel with the sound off and just seeing images. Eventually, an image will hit me so hard that I have to write a story about it. The happened with my story, Love (and Other Uses for Duct Tape). Fourth Way Of Icy Understanding Figuring things out. This is sort of like Another Way, but instead of deliberately asking yourself off-the-wall questions, ask questions about things that matter to you. A lot of my stories are because I don't understand something. Tips on Having a Gay (Ex) Boyfriend was because I couldn't understand a hate crime that had happened. I mean, you can never understand that kind of hate, but this one incident was so bizarre that the only way I could deal with it was to write my way through it. Fifth Way—An Emotional Blizzard Get emotional. What is it that always makes you laugh, cry with joy, weep with anger? What are the situations that pull at your heartstrings? Think about that as story. Write. Dog Tip for Life Inspiration is just attention. Notice what's around you. Then ideas will come. Writing Tip of the Pod Once you have your seed of information and your brain has successfully stormed, don't second guess your idea. Write it down. If you are a plot-first writer, think up the questions to flesh out your idea - who is the protagonist. What is she up against? What's her goal? How is she going to get it? Write it down. Do it. Don't block yourself. RANDOM THOUGHT LINKS APA article NPR SHOUT OUT! The music we've clipped and shortened in this podcast is awesome and is made available through the Creative Commons License. Our guest this week is Stephanie Arends. Stephanie is the miCHILIgan group hang events coordinator and will soon be taking over from "Karla with a K." She is working on a YouTube channel focusing on camping and traveling for "non-traditional" campers. Meaning, tips and tricks for camping and traveling if you are disabled, overweight, solo, or advancing age. As of now she only has 1 full video and a couple of shorts, but she has other videos in the works around this topic coming soon. As someone who is overweight and disabled, she quit camping for a long time. But when she found hammock camping, she found that it was her way to be able to get back outside and enjoy the outdoors! So, in this episode we will be talking a lot on those topics, plus Stephanie has an interesting story about how her and her husband had to ride out a hailstorm and tornado in a cave while they were out on a camping trip. fWotD Episode 2535: 1999 Sydney hailstorm Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of the featured Wikipedia article every day.The featured article for Saturday, 13 April 2024 is 1999 Sydney hailstorm. The 1999 Sydney hailstorm was the costliest natural disaster in Australian insurance history, causing extensive damage along the east coast of New South Wales. The storm developed south of Sydney on the afternoon of Wednesday, 14 April 1999, and struck the city's eastern suburbs, including the central business district, later that evening. The storm dropped an estimated 500,000 tonnes of hailstones in its path. The insured damage bill caused by the storm was over A$1.7 billion (equivalent to $3.8 billion in 2022), with the total bill (including uninsured damage) estimated to be around $2.3 billion. It was the costliest single natural disaster in Australian history in insured damage, surpassing the $1.1 billion in insured damage caused by the 1989 Newcastle earthquake. Lightning also claimed one life during the storm, and the event caused approximately 50 injuries. The storm was classified as a supercell following further analysis of its erratic nature and extreme attributes. During the event, the Bureau of Meteorology was constantly surprised by the frequent changes in direction, as well as the severity of the hail and the duration of the storm. The event was also surprising as neither the time of year, time of day, nor the general meteorological conditions in the region were seen as conducive for extreme storm cell formation. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:15 UTC on Saturday, 13 April 2024.For the full current version of the article, see 1999 Sydney hailstorm on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Kimberly Neural.

Are you a Hailstorm or a Turtle?Hailstorm = one who brings up complaints; Turtle = the one who shuts down/gets defensive and/or walks on eggshells. To the turtle, the hailstorm seems like someone who is needy, clingy, demanding, and critical. --> "I can never satisfy her, so why try?"To the hailstorm, the turtle seems like he/she doesn't care, is defensive, is not a team player, and maybe even selfish. --> "I'm on my own."When we don't understand what is happening in someone's inner world, we jump to making character judgments of them."She is too needy.""He is selfish."But that's a misunderstanding at best, and a hurtful belief at worst. On today's episode, I will be revealing what is *actually* going on underneath for each of these attachment styles.Including, their core fears, behaviors, needs, and desires...--> so YOU can stop going in circles, and start connecting in a deep and fulfilling way with the people in your life. This will change the way you operate in the world.Next week, I will be doing a DEEP DIVE into this topic with examples, as well as answering your questions, in our free FB group 'Heal Your Relationships.'If you are not in the FB group yet, come join the conversation here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/rm4wl

Our beloved Brown Noise combined with a soothing hailstorm and thunder. Brown Noise (sometimes referred to as Red Noise) is a much deeper, fuller version of the popular White Noise, with a heavy emphasis on low-end frequencies. It's wonderful for soothing babies and adults alike during sleep, study, or any other activities where you want to block out the world and focus solely on the task at hand. --- If these Sound Machines have been helpful for you, I'd be so grateful if you'd rate the show on either Spotify or Apple Podcasts
Our beloved White Noise combined with a soothing hailstorm and thunder. White Noise is incredibly effective at canceling out sounds you don't want to hear...period. There is a heavier emphasis on high-end frequencies that can counteract incoming sounds and drown out the most insistent of external interruptions. My White Noise listeners may be my most passionately addicted
Our beloved Pink Noise combined with a soothing hailstorm and thunder. Pink Noise is a combination of White Noise and Brown Noise. They are overlaid on top of one another to gain the benefits of both the higher frequencies typically used more for sound cancellation, and the lower frequencies that tend to be more soothing for sensitive ears. It's wonderful for soothing babies and adults alike during sleep, study, or any other activities where you want to block out the world and focus solely on the task at hand. --- If these Sound Machines have been helpful for you, I'd be so grateful if you'd rate the show on either Spotify or Apple Podcasts
