The 42 revealed last week that RTÉ have lost the rights to show League of Ireland matches to Virgin Media - despite an early-year press release in which RTÉ appeared to assume they would be showing the games in 2025.On this week's episode, Sinéad and Gavin dig into this story - why did RTE and the LOI prove to be such a loveless marriage? Were RTÉ neglecting their public service remit by not screening LOI games more often, or were they right not to do so from a commercial perspective? They explore the eternal paradox of RTÉ's public service and commercial remits, discuss more broadly the role sport plays at RTÉ, and interrogate the role sport should play at RTÉ.Why is there such little clarity on how much money RTÉ makes from their live sport coverage? Is it appropriate for RTÉ to have so many sports rights, and is it time they launched a sport-specific channel on which to show the many sports they have? They also discuss why RTÉ's coverage been made so much more bland than it used to be, and whether they have erred in diminishing the role of 'personality pundits?'Plus, why is everyone so unhappy with The Sunday Game, and are RTÉ right to sell their share of GAAGO?Get in touch - sinead@thejournal.ie and gavincooney@the42.ieThis week's episode of The 42FM is brought to you by An Post Money. The GAA are seeking expressions of interest for a provider to broadcast games currently shown on GAAGO. The media rights will be for the games which the streaming platform currently broadcast within Ireland, and which were previously behind the Sky Sports paywall. For more on this, Alan Morrissey was joined by Michael Verney, former Offaly Hurler and Sports Journalist and Timmy Dooley, Fianna Fáil Senator, from Mountshannon, Oireachtas Communications Committee Member.

Nuacht Mhall. Príomhscéalta na seachtaine, léite go mall. * Inniu an t-ochtó lá de mhí an Mheithimh. Is mise Siubhán Nic Amhlaoibh. Dar le tuairisc déanta ag Seirbhís Póilíneachta Thuaisceart Éireann, tá breis is 320 iarratas déanta acu ar rochtain ar shonraí cumarsáide iriseoirí le 13 bliana anuas. Ar 10 gcinn de na hócáidí seo, bhain sé le hiarracht a dhéanamh ar a gcuid foinsí a aithint trí mhodhanna rúnda. Dúirt an PSNI gur minic a bhí sonraí á lorg acu nuair a bhí na hiriseoirí ina n-íospartaigh, ina n-amhrastaigh nó ina bhfiannéithe. Dúradh sa tuarascáil fosta go ndearnadh 500 iarratas ar shonraí a bhain le dlíodóirí le linn na tréimhse céanna. D'iarr Amnesty International agus Aontas Náisiúnta na nIriseoirí go ndéanfaí fiosrúchán ar ghníomhaíocht faireachais póilíneachta. Tagann sé i ndiaidh líomhaintí cúirte go ndearnadh monatóireacht mhídhleathach ar ghutháin de chuid roinnt tuairisceoirí. Dúradh sa tuarascáil go raibh na hócáidí ina ndearnadh iarracht foinse iriseora a aithint bainteach le himscrúduithe ar “nochtadh neamhúdaraithe” fhaisnéis nó dhoiciméid an PSNI. Dúirt an PSNI go ndéanann sé thart ar 8,500 iarratas sonraí cumarsáide gach bliain. Ach, i ráiteas, dúirt an Bord Póilíneachta nár thug an tuarascáil “gach ráthaíocht a bhí de dhíth ar dhaoine”. Ní ba luaithe an tseachtain seo, d'fhógair an Príomh-Chonstábla Jon Boutcher go ndéanfaidh dlíodóir, Angus McCullough KC, athbhreithniú ar chúrsaí faireachais.Cháin príomhfheidhmeannach na Náisiún Aontaithe ionsaí a rinne Iosrael ar scoil a bhí á reáchtáil ag na Naisiúin Aontaithe le déanaí. Líomhnaíonn Iosrael go raibh “comhdháil Hamas” á reachtáil sa scoil. Dúirt dochtúirí Gaza gur maraíodh 40 duine ar a laghad. “Níl ann ach sampla uafásach eile den phraghas atá á íoc ag sibhialtaigh, go bhfuil fir, mná agus leanaí na Palaistíne faoi chos agus iad díreach ag iarraidh maireachtáil” a dúirt urlabhraí Ard-Rúnaí na Náisiún Aontaithe, António Guterres. "Beidh gá le cuntasacht as gach rud a tharla in Gaza," a dúirt sé. Tá iarrtha ag na Stáit Aontaithe ar Iosrael a bheith fírinneach faoin ionsaí seo - lena n-áirítear ar maraíodh leanaí san ionsaí. Dúirt an tUasal Miller gur chreid polaiteoirí na Stát Aontaithe measúnuithe agus tuairisc Iosrael go bhfuil Hamas i bhfolach uaireanta i mbonneagar sibhialta, ach dúirt sé go raibh sé ag fanacht le faisnéis ar an ionsaí is déanaí. Thuairiscigh Iosrael gur bhuail siad an scoil mar ionsaí ón aer, spriocdhírithe ar níos mó ná 30 trodaithe Hamas taobh istigh, ach dúirt oifigeach Palaistíneach gurb iad 40 duine lena n-áirítear mná agus leanaí a maraíodh agus iad ag baint úsáid as an suíomh NA mar fhoscadh. Mheabhraigh Ó Broin nach raibh cluichí Gaelacha á sruthú ag an gCumann cúig bliana ó shin ach nuair a tharla an phaindéim go raibh dualgas ar CLG an cumas a chruthú. “Craoladh 222 cluiche Gaelach anuraidh le tráchtaireacht i nGaeilge as 300 – ní olc sin nuair a smaoiníonn tú air agus ba bhreá linn é sin a dhéanamh,” a dúirt sé, agus é ag caint ag Comórtas Peile na Gaeltachta ar na mallaibh. “Nuair a smaoiníonn tú go bhfuil an BBC ábalta é a dhéanamh agus fiú an BBC, b'fhéidir go dtiocfadh le GAAGO féachaint air sin . Tá cuid mhór féidearthachtaí ag GAAGO gan amhras agus sin ceann de na féidearthachtaí atá againn, beidh muid ag breathnú agus ag leathnú amach na seirbhíse agus, insan todhchaí, má leanaimid sa treo ina bhfuil muid ag dul, sílim go dtiocfaidh linn sin a dhéanamh," a dúirt sé. * Léirithe ag Conradh na Gaeilge i Londain. GAA President Larry McCarthy Reflects on His Tenure in “The Game on Sunday” Podcast+ Best job of my life+ Cork, covid & Croke Park+ The split season+ GAA GO+ The future of hurling+ Decompressing & returning to collegeIn a revealing episode of “The Game on Sunday” podcast hosted by Michael Lyster, GAA President Larry McCarthy shared profound insights into his presidency, addressing key challenges and future prospects of Gaelic games. Joined by Tomas Mulcahy, the trio delved into various topics, including the state of hurling, player welfare, and the integration of non-nationals into Gaelic games.+ A Term Defined by COVID-19 and Broadcasting EvolutionLarry McCarthy's presidency coincided with the unprecedented challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. Reflecting on this period, he noted, “It was very difficult the first couple of months,” contrasting his role in reopening games with his predecessor's role in their closure. McCarthy also highlighted the importance of GAA GO, the organization's broadcasting service, in ensuring game access when traditional broadcasters opted out.+ Addressing the Cost of Running County TeamsTomas Mulcahy raised concerns about the escalating costs of running county teams, a topic that has stirred considerable debate in GAA circles. Responding, McCarthy emphasized county autonomy in financial decisions: “The decision is made to spend that money is at that local level… if you can't afford it, you can't afford it.”+ The Future of Hurling and Integration EffortsDiscussing hurling, McCarthy detailed efforts to expand the sport in less dominant regions, citing the South Ulster Junior Developmental Hurling League as a success story. On integrating non-nationals, McCarthy believed that understanding Ireland entails engaging with GAA, though he acknowledged soccer's dominance among newcomers.+ Personal Reflections and Advice to SuccessorAs McCarthy nears the end of his term, he offered simple advice to his successor, Jarlath Burns: “Enjoy it… Embrace it.” McCarthy plans to return to his academic role in the United States but remains open to future GAA involvement. The Cathaoirleach of Clare County Council is welcoming news that the majority of Clare's Munster hurling championship games in 2024 will be available on free to air television. GAA GO has unveiled its pay-per-view schedule for next year, with Clare's trip to Pairc ui Chaoimh on Sunday April 28th being the only one of the Banner's four round robin fixtures behind the paywall. In 2023, three of Clare's four games were only available on the subscription service, prompting a motion from a cohort of Clare county councillors calling for this to be addressed. Former chair of Clare GAA and Fine Gael councillor Joe Cooney says while it is a welcome step, more work needs to be done to keep as many games as possible available free to air.
