Last year he was diagnosed with early onset dementia, and probably CTE - a fatal brain disease associated with repeated traumatic brain injuries. Follow world record holder Kiko Matthews on a solo row across the Atlantic Ocean: 3,000 nautical miles in 49 Days 7 hours and 15 minutes.   200 women have  completed this challenge, that's it. Only 18 have done it solo. Kiko is the fastest ... and before she started training she hadn't even set foot in a row boat before. But that's not the most remarkable thing about this story. Eight months before she was due to set out Kiko was diagnosed with Cushing's Disease a rare, and often fatal, form of brain cancer. The doctors found a tumour on her pituitary gland at the base of her brain. It was life or death. Most of us would have given up at that point. Not Kiko. She received emergency brain surgery and just a few weeks later got straight back to training. This is a story of an incredible adventure: She faced huge storms, rogue waves that nearly capsized the boat. She paddled with whales, dolphins and sharks. She saw the ocean light up like stars with phosphorescence and felt what it meant to be truly alone and humbled, in the vastness of the ocean. But it's also a story about courage, about mental strength and resilience and her story will inspire you to face your own challenge, to follow your own dream, row your own ocean, whatever that may be. Kiko rowed the 3284 miles departing Barbados and arriving in Europe 49 days 7 hours and 15 minutes later. In 2009, she had a nearly fatal pituitary tumor, which resulted in Cushing's disease. She had to undergo neurosurgery to treat it. In August 2017, she had another tumor, which occurred while she was training for the Atlantic crossing. After another neurosurgery, she returned to training and then smashed the Atlantic solo record! She's always been motivated by challenge and adventure and in narrowly avoiding death, the health scare made Kiko clear on how she wanted to spend the rest of her life. She has since dedicated herself to doing things that help people and the planet and challenging herself along th way. This bonus podcast episode is from This is Money's new special series Making the Money Work, in partnership with the Financial Services Compensation Scheme. Andi Peters and Simon Lambert talk to record-breaking Atlantic solo rower Kiko Matthews. How do you fund a life less ordinary? For most of us financial life means paydays, bills, mortgages and attempts to save or invest, but for others it is very different. If you decide to row the Atlantic, are an Olympic boxer, or have made a career out of having adventures or doing comedy, what on earth do you do with your finances? In our new special podcast series Making the Money Work, in partnership with the Financial Services Compensation Scheme, we talk earnings, budgeting and savings with those whose lives and finances roam far from the norm. The five podcasts are hosted by Andi Peters, alongside This is Money’s Simon Lambert, and every fortnight over the next ten weeks you can listen to a new interview with a different special guest about their financial lives. This is Money’s Podcast will continue to appear each Friday as usual, and the Making the Money Work podcasts will be published fortnightly as a bonus episode in the feed. The first episode features Kiko Matthews, who on 22 March 2018, became the fastest woman to row the Atlantic, solo and unsupported, over 49 days, 7 hours and 15 minutes.  Through sponsorship of her world record attempt she raised more than £105,000 for King's College Hospital by the end of that year. But that isn’t even half the story, because in 2009 Kiko had been diagnosed with Cushings Disease, a rare and life-threatening condition, which causes tumours on the pituitary gland that controls the body’s hormones. That life-changing discovery led her to quit her job as a science teacher, qualify as a paddle-boarding instructor and set up her own business, before deciding to row the Atlantic, despite not being a rower. Midway through her training in 2017, her Cushings Disease returned and although she had to undergo neurosurgery, Kiko pushed on with her Atlantic rowing attempt. Since then, Kiko has focussed on environmental campaigning and recently cycled round the coasts of Britain and Ireland completing beach cleans. On this podcast, Kiko tells us her fascinating story, discusses her finances - and reveals just how you go about funding rowing the Atlantic.

Have you ever had a bad day or maybe found yourself feeling a little down? And thought about what you could do to feel a little better? Chances are, you probably didn't think about smashing a world record and putting yourself through a bucket load of pain in the process? Well, today's guest did just that... After facing a life-threatening disease, 37-year-old former teacher Kiko Matthews set herself the challenge of becoming the fastest woman to solo row across the Atlantic, unassisted with zero previous experience of rowing… As you'll hear in today's episode, half way through her training, her brain tumour came back. But that didn't stop Kiko from believing she could accomplish her goal of proving that anything is possible if you really want it and set your mind to it. The result? Eight months after being operated on, this incredible human being rowed the 21ft-long Soma of Essex for up to 16 hours a day, sleeping in two-hour shifts, spent 49 days at sea crossing the 3,200+ miles from East to West, smashed the previous record of 56 day (which was set by the French in 2002…Ouch!) by just over a week and now is a 2x World Record holder. Her goal was simple: to empower and inspire women to push their boundaries while supporting King's College Hospital Charity, who saved her life in 2009 and again in August 2017, raising more than £100,000 for them. Ladies and gentlemen, this is one of the craziest and most inspiring interviews I've had to date with someone who simply refuses to call herself inspiring or special.
