Send us a textAlaska State House Representative for West Anchorage Carolyn Hall got an internship with the Boston Red Sox during her senior year of college in New Hampshire. This led to her dream job working for the team as a videographer during their World Series win in 2004. In 2008 she branched into TV journalism getting her first job with a small local market: KTUU in Anchorage. She covered the Iditarod, Gov. Sarah Palin, Sen. Ted Stevens' trial from DC, and Sen. Lisa Murkowski's 2010 write-in campaign. Hall then worked for a larger TV market in Seattle where she earned an Emmy for her coverage of the Oso Landslide in 2014. After returning to Anchorage, she left broadcast journalism and branched into politics working as communications director for Governor Bill Walker, and at the start of the Covid pandemic, for Anchorage Mayor Ethan Berkowitz. We talk about all of that and how she ended up running for office in today's episode. Watch the video of Carolyn Hall and Ethan Berkowitz leaving Anchorage Assembly Chambers, Aug 12, 2020.

Murder and Mystery in the Last Frontier

This story has all the elements of a Greek tragedy or a Shakespearean play, and it could easily inspire the plot of a movie or a mystery novel. Unfortunately, this is a true drama, and the outcome deprived children of their father and a wife of her new husband. We will never know how this event truly ended. The last few moments aboard the R66 helicopter and the pilot's mindset will remain a mystery. Did Andy Teuber's helicopter crash into the Gulf of Alaska because he purposely flew it into the ocean, sparing his family and himself the embarrassment of a tawdry, drawn-out court case that could land him in prison? Or was Teuber distracted and perhaps taking chances he wouldn't usually take because he was rushing to get home to his family in Kodiak before the news media broke the story about his messy affair? Some people believe the Anchorage Daily News, the largest newspaper in Alaska, bears a portion of the blame for Teuber's tragic death. If the paper hadn't rushed to print a story about Teuber before carefully fact-checking it, perhaps Andy Teuber would still be alive. Erin Marie Gilbert As I've mentioned in other episodes, each year, an average of 2,250 people disappear in Alaska, twice the national average.  According to the Alaska State Troopers, approximately 1,520 people currently are listed as missing in Alaska. The cases date back to the 1950s. Some of these people vanished on purpose, and others suffered unfortunate accidents. We know a few met with foul play, though. They were alive, well, and happy one moment, and then they suddenly disappeared without a trace. The two stories I'm covering in this episode describe every parent's worst nightmare, and in both cases, I can't help but wonder why more wasn't done at the time to search for these young women. Since both cases technically remain open, though, the public cannot access Jonnie Renee White the police files, and perhaps authorities have done a great deal over the years to search for Erin and Jonnie. This summer was a great one at Jimmie Jack's Alaska Lodges. We caught giant fish, had some wonderful guests, and purchased a 5-star property.Click here for "Original" Alaska Lodge packagesClick here for Alaska SeaScape Lodge packagesWe are here on the banks of the world famous Kenai river at the end of the summer fishing season of 2016. We had a great summer and did a lot of exciting things that we’d like to share with you today. We had the privilege to be featured again on Channel 2 KTUU, one of our local channels out here. They came out on the boat with us and caught some massive silver salmon, among other fish. NFL legend Larry Csonka and his former teammate Norm Evans joined us for a trip. They had a great time out there on the water. Looking back, we had an incredible summer and now look forward to an exciting new future here at Jimmie Jack's!We caught a lot of Lingcod and Yelloweye Rockfish this summer, as well as the largest halibut caught out of Ninilchik. It was 345 pounds and caught by our Seascape guest John. The fight was impressive, but with the help of Captain Charlie Barberini and his deckhand, Cooper, they were able to wrangle it into the boat. Watch the exciting capture in the video above.Outside of fishing, the biggest highlight of the season is that we acquired the Alaska Seascape Lodge, which allows our guests to experience the ruggedness of Alaska with the amenities of a 5-Star property. The water level has been dropping, it’s getting cooler, and we are just getting in some last-minute fishing before the colder months come. If you have any questions for us or if you’re already looking ahead to plan your trip for next year, give us a call or send us an email. We look forward to hearing from you.

More and more grandparents are raising their children's children and here in Alaska, the Grandfamilies Network Project estimates that there are 5,000 grandparents in this state raising 8,500 grandchildren without either biological parent present. It's a lot of work raising kids, especially when you're older and you thought you were done raising a family, so how are these remarkable men and women making it work as modern grandparents? IN-STUDIO GUESTS: Joining KTD Host Shana Sheehy in the studio are three special grandmothers, one of whom is guest hosting for this program: Nellie Moore, today's guest host, is a veteran Alaska journalist who co-founded Native Voice Communications and hosted their flagship show, Independent Native News. Recently Nellie has been working with Syntax Productions, part of KTUU, assisting with film productions in rural Alaska, and she and her husband own a network consultation business, Bering Systems. All this and Nellie is also the proud grandmother of 7-year old twins. Linda Price is the coordinator of a local group, the Grandfamilies Network Project, that supports grandparents raising grandchildren. The project, part of the Volunteers of America, Alaska, provides support in the form of social get-togethers, support groups, a lending library, winter wear for children and a toll-free "warm line" 1-888-522-9866. Those seeking more information may also email Linda Price at: grands @ voaak (dot) org. We also meet two very special women who are part of the Grandfamilies Network - great-grandmother Rozann Kimpton, and grandmother Madeline Mason, who are both currently raising little ones. They share how the project has helped them navigate the challenges and celebrate the joys of raising babies a second (and third) time around.
