Teddy, s teorijami zarot obseden čebelar, s pomočjo avtističnega bratranca Dona ugrabi direktorico farmacevtskega podjetja Michelle, za katero verjame, da je Nezemljanka, ki škoduje naravi, izvaja globalni nadzor in načrtuje uničenje planeta. Toda bojevita Michelle se ne prepusti kar tako vlogi žrtve ... Bugonija je novi celovečerni film Yorgosa Lanthimosa, v katerem pionir »grškega čudaškega vala« po fantazijsko-zgodovinski satiri Nesrečna bitja iz leta 2023 ponovno sodeluje z avtorskim izzivom naklonjeno Emmo Stone. Najprej se seveda postavi vprašanje, zakaj sploh delati priredbo popolnega filma – Bugonija namreč s svojim pripovednim lokom, mračnim humorjem in končnim preobratom povsem zvesto sledi južnokorejski znanstvenofantastični mojstrovini Save the Green Planet! (Rešimo zeleni planet) iz leta 2003. Izvirnik je režiral Jang Joon-hwan. Jang je bil resda predviden tudi za režiserja ameriške različice, a je krmilo prevzel Yorgos Lanthimos in snov po svoje pregnetel. Divjaško, punkersko energijo izvirnika, ki se kljub nizkoproračunskemu srcu B-filma ponaša z mojstrskimi režijskimi rešitvami in številnimi cinefilskimi posvetili, je nadomestil s svojim prepoznavnim šik minimalizmom, podmazanim z visokim proračunom. Lanthimosov slog filma je hladen, odmaknjen, nadzorovan, hkrati pa ves čas ustvarja napetost, tako z nelagodno sopostavitvijo slike in glasbe, ki uglajenim mizanscenskim rešitvam nasprotuje, kot s svojim pristopom do likov, ki bi ga lahko v skladu z vodilnim motivom označili za entomološkega – nastopajoče osebe namreč avtor opazuje kot žuželke (z njim pa seveda to počnemo tudi mi kot gledalci). Skratka, filmski organizem v obeh inačicah poganja dinamika nasprotij. Na prvi pogled so očitne družbene razlike med direktorico in delavcem za tekočim trakom v istem podjetju. Lanthimos je spremenil in poudaril spolne vloge – v korejskem izvirniku je šlo za par moškega in ženske, ki ugrabita vzvišenega direktorja; dvajset let pozneje dva moška, sostanovalca iz razreda revnih zaposlenih, ugrabita toksično šefico, pasivno-agresivno ultrabogatašinjo. Toda mojstrstvo filma je v tem, da v resnici nič ni prav zares fiksirano. Domnevno preprost Teddy kot predstavnik dobrega in domnevno sofisticirana Michelle kot predstavnica zla se v dialoškem dvoboju izkažeta za enakovredna borca. »Laž, resnica … kakšna je sploh razlika?« vpraša Michelle in s tem čudovito povzame postresničnostni duh časa. Film vzpostavlja tudi nasprotje med lažnim jezikom korporativnega komuniciranja in osebnim, človeškim aktivizmom, a hkrati sam Teddy priznava, da je »99,9 odstotka tega, čemur rečemo aktivizem, samo osebno izpostavljanje in prikrito vzdrževanje blagovne znamke«. Gre za izjavo leta. V primerjavi s korejskim izvirnikom imajo čebele v Bugoniji precej pomembnejšo vlogo, večpomenski naslov filma namiguje med drugim na antično prepričanje, da se lahko čebele rodijo iz kadavrov goveda. Čebele simbolizirajo ciklično naravo življenja, smrti in ponovnega rojstva, kozmosa in časa, s posnetkom čebel se Bugonija tudi začne in konča. Po eni od teorij naj bi se z njihovim pojavom pred 60 milijoni let evolucijsko uveljavilo spolno razmnoževanje – da bi se tej komponenti izognila, se Teddy in Don pred svojim podvigom kemično kastrirata, kar je, ob spremenjenih spolnih vlogah v primerjavi z izvirnikom, interpretacijsko precej zgovorno. Čebele so tudi simbol zdravja in varuhinje preživetja, a so vseeno podvržene boleznim in nevarnosti samouničenja, kot izpostavi film, ki tudi pokaže, da je nespametno in celo nevarno vzpostavljanje vzporednic glede družbenih ureditev čebel in ljudi. Korejski izvirnik je bil dogajalno postavljen na rob propadlega rudnika in po svoje nadaljuje z rudarjenjem tudi Lanthimos, namreč po bogatem nahajališču tem. Kljub temu, da je svojo predlogo na prvi pogled dodobra oklestil, ni v ničemer zmanjšal vsebinskega izobilja in množice drobnih detajlov. Če kaj, se je kvečjemu poklonil vizionarstvu svojega predhodnika, ki je pred desetletji napovedal algoritemske mehurčke, v katerih živimo danes, zapredke teorij zarot, ki včasih niti ne dohajajo dejanskih družbenih norosti, pa politične napetosti, ki izvirajo tudi iz navezave ekonomsko-okoljske problematike, sebičnost in nečloveškost in zlorabe, ki se skrivajo pod iluzijo normalnega teka življenja … Bugonija z jezikom črne komedije oziroma mračne satire, ki postaja vedno bolj grenka, bolj ko o njej razmišljaš, natančno zariše duha časa in apokaliptično vzdušje konca. Toda jedko posmehljiv film je preveč inteligenten, da bi ga lahko uokvirili s poenostavljenimi frazami. Za svoj moto bi si lahko vzel tudi misel Fredrica Jamesona, da si je lažje predstavljati konec zemlje oziroma narave kot zlom poznega kapitalizma. A hkrati lahko gledamo Bugonijo prav kot kritiko tega našega fantaziranja o koncu sveta … Baladni vodilni song korejskega izvirnika, Somewhere Over the Rainbow, je Lanthimos nenazadnje zamenjal s podobno otožno, a krožno odprto Where Have All the Flowers Gone? Skratka, razumevanja zapletenosti časa, v katerem živimo, ne moremo doseči brez razumevanja vseh paradoksov sobivanja nasprotij. Recenzijo je napisal Gorazd Trušnovec, bere Dejan Kaloper. Bugonia is a 2025 absurdist black comedy film directed by Yorgos Lanthimos. It is an English-language remake of the 2003 South Korean film Save the Green Planet! by Jang Joon-hwan. It follows two young men who kidnap a powerful CEO, suspecting that she is secretly an alien who wants to destroy Earth. A co-production of Ireland, South Korea, and the United States, the film stars Emma Stone, Jesse Plemons, Aidan Delbis, Stavros Halkias, and Alicia Silverstone.Development on the film began as early as 2020, with Jang attached to direct and Will Tracy adapting the screenplay. Ari Aster came on board as producer soon after, and by February 2024, Lanthimos was hired to direct, replacing Jang, while Stone joined the project both as an actress and producer. Plemons joined the cast that May, and it was soon acquired by Focus Features for distribution at the Cannes Film Festival. Principal photography began in July in High Wycombe, England, and Atlanta, Georgia, and during which time, the rest of the cast was announced. Additional filming took place in May 2025 in Milos, Greece. With an estimated budget of $45-$55 million, Bugonia is Lanthimos' most expensive film.Bugonia had its world premiere in the main competition of the 82nd Venice International Film Festival on August 28, 2025, and was theatrically released in the United States by Focus Features on October 24. British historian John Whelpton, who holds a PhD in Nepali political history from the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London, first visited Nepal in the 1970s. Since then, he has been actively involved in researching Nepali history and other academic activities. Whelpton, who is also the author of books such as ‘Jang Bahadur in Europe' and ‘A History of Nepal', was recently honoured by the Nepal government with the ‘Itihas Shiromani Baburam Acharya National Award' for his significant contribution to the field of Nepalese history. Natasha: But first, California revokes Olivet University's approval to operate—but the school says it plans to stay open anyway. Warren: The California Department of Consumer Affairs Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education has ordered that Olivet University's approval to operate be revoked. The order also requires the school to pay $64,432 to cover the costs of the investigation and prosecution. Because of this action, Olivet must cease enrolling new students and must propose a planned “teach out” current students. Natasha: What's the background to Olivet? Warren: Olivet, founded by controversial figure David Jang, was approved to operate by the state in 2005, but that approval expired in 2014 and has not been renewed. In March 2023, a complaint was filed against Olivet, seeking a revocation or suspension of its approval to operate. It included 14 reasons the state should revoke the approval, including failing to include a face-to-face instructional component, failing to provide all the courses included in the approval, failing to have necessary evaluations of faculty, and failing to demonstrate that Olivet has required financial resources. Last year, a group of former Olivet students sued Jang and the university, claiming they were part of an international labor trafficking scheme run by Jang and his disciples. According to reporting by Newsweek, Olivet University is also under investigation by the Department of Homeland Security for money laundering, human trafficking, and visa fraud. By the way, every time we write about Olivet University, we get emails asking if this is the same as Olivet Nazarene University in Illinois. It is not. The two schools are not related in any way. Natasha: What's our next story? Warren: If the plan of the Chateauroux Fellowship and its director Christian Thomas Lee comes to pass as promised, it would likely be the largest philanthropic initiative aimed at Christian ministries in American history.
