Dessen Erfindungen einer Reklameuhr, eines Schiessapparates oder eines Krankenstuhls übernahm der junge Dichter für seinen zweiten Roman, den er 1907 in Berlin zu Papier brachte. Im Getöse der Grossstadt imaginierte Walser die beschauliche Zürcher Seegemeinde Bärenswil, von wo aus der in Tobler unbenannte Start-up-Unternehmer (wie man heute sagen würde) die Welt mit seinen innovativen Produkten zu erobern versucht. Der Erfolg will sich jedoch nicht einstellen, und die Finanzen werden knapp. Der umtriebige Genussmensch Tobler, dem drohenden Ruin zum Trotz, lässt sein Anwesen immer weiter aus- und umbauen und rauschende Feste feiern. In seiner akustischen Umsetzung konzentriert sich der Schweizer Klangkünstler Stefan Weber auf den kammerspielartigen Kern des Romans. Joseph Marti, ausgeliefert den Launen und Verzweiflungen des Herrn Tobler und gleichzeitig angezogen vom sublimen Begehren der Frau Tobler, versucht sich zwar mit dem Selbstbewusstsein des jungen Aussenseiters abzugrenzen, verliert sich jedoch mehr und mehr in luftig verwegenen Träumereien. Der Untergang des Hauses Tobler bleibt auch den Bürgerinnen und Bürgern von Bärenswil nicht verborgen, die ihn heimlifeiss vergnügt aus nüchterner Distanz beobachten: «Da oben liegt es, still und winterlich vereinzelt, als fröre es ein wenig. Pressure on the Fed to cut interest rates couldn't be more clear, according to Rebecca Walser.
