Chuck Foreman was one of the NFL's most feared fullback's of the 1970s. In fact, he might have been the best fullback in the game during those years. Drafted in the 1973 first round by the Minnesota Vikings out of the University of Miami, Foreman was told by Vikings Head Coach Bud Grant that he would be the focal point of the Minnesota offense, but the way they would use him, despite the fact that he would rack up big numbers, he wouldn't get the recognition he deserved. Grant was right. Over the course of Foreman's 8-year career, he he combined to rush for and catch passes for 9,106-yards. He scored 76 touchdowns, in 1973 he led the NFL in receptions with 73. He was the 1973 Offensive Rookie of the Year, First Team All-Pro in 1975, Pro Bowl in 1973, 74, 75, 76. Led the Vikings to three NFC Championships and played in three Super Bowls. yet, with all of those accolades, somehow, Foreman's accomplishments got lost in the shuffle. Somehow, his numbers did not impress the right people and despite the fact that his numbers are better than such Hall of Famers as Terrell David, Marion Motley, Larry Csonka, and others, Foreman was never considered for the Hall of Fame. On this episode of Sports' Forgotten Heroes, Chuck joins for a discussion on his great career, the Hall of Fame and some very fun stories.

Good things do come to those who wait! When I launched The QuadCast 4 years ago, I had a list of dream guests. High profile folks who didn't know this little engine that could even existed, and yet I held out hope. At the top of that list was Marc Buoniconti, and today he's here! Persistence pays off my friends. Following Marc's SCI in 1985, his father Nick set out to conquer paralysis with the same ferocity as he did quarterbacks and ball carriers over his 15-year Hall Of Fame NFL career. It was then that he and world renowned neurosurgeon, Dr. Barth Green, came together and founded The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis. Since then, research at The Miami Project has changed the landscape of knowledge and therapeutic strategies for spinal cord injury and traumatic brain injury. In our wide ranging conversation, Marc shares stories about growing up around the Miami Dolphins, and such great players as Paul Warfield, Bob Griese, and Larry Csonka. He recants in great detail the weeks, days, and moments leading up to his injury, and he praises the amazing father he loved and admired. Today as the President of The Miami Project, Marc proudly continues the yeoman's work his father and Dr. Green began 38 years ago. This episode has it all, and I can't wait for you to hear it! Thank you Marc!

Hour 1 Boomer slept through the snooze part of his alarm and just made it at the start of the show. We will be golfing today and switching hotels. Boomer wants to make sure we're all good to go to head right to the airport after Monday morning's show. Gio said hookers are indigenous to Nevada. Gio and Jerry played gold ‘in the middle of squalor'. There were walls and barbed wires surrounding the course to keep the riff raff out. Gio and Jerry got into an Uber that looked like it had just been in an accident. Trevor Lawrence was at the Boomer Breitling event last night. Gio said Trevor has, ‘a lady face'. Woody Johnson said the Jets didn't have a backup quarterback last year. Jerry is here for his first update of the day and wonders why Boomer is fascinated with his pants. The Knicks were a mash unit last night and struggled with the Mavericks. In the final segment of the hour, a few weeks ago news came out that Sports Illustrated was out of business and everyone was fired. But yesterday Brittany MAHOMES was named a Sports Illustrated rookie swimsuit model. Danny Amendola was walking by so we had him sit down with us.  Hour 2 Gio said he's not a good sports gambler because he's too emotional. Gio wants to pick a team to really root for since we will be at the game. Larry Csonka will be doing the coin flip. Eddie went hiking by himself yesterday and fell down and was bleeding. Boomer loves the QB matchup for the Super Bowl: Patrick MAHOMES, in the middle of a dynasty, vs Brock Purdy, the last pick in the draft.  Hour 3 Gio said when they get back to New York, he and Boomer are going to have to do a colon cleanse. Boomer was eating chili on a golf course at one point. There's more golf today and CBS Sports Network producer Stephen Waldron is joining us today. Tonight is Super Bowl's Greatest Commercials on CBS. The NFL Today guys were on Jeopardy again as a tie in with the Super Bowl. Jerry is here for an update and starts with Woody Johnson talking about the disappointing Jets season. Jerry Jones talked about the Cowboys letting the fans down against Green Bay. Tony ROMO was trying to put a positive spin on the Cowboys and then Stephen A. Smith was screaming about it. Gio said Stephen A. Smith is an actor, and he's very good at it. Deion Sanders is impressed by Brock Purdy. Boomer ran into Warren Sapp yesterday and asked him about joining Deion on the Colorado staff. Baker Mayfield was on with Kay Adams and sort of confirmed he'll be back with Tampa, albeit on a ‘hot mic' and not on air. Danielle McCarten is here and she asked Travis KELCE to finish the Taylor Swift song lyric. Jerry wonders what this sound is (it's probably a fart). Josh Hart and Jalen Brunson have a new podcast called, ‘Roommates', and Jerry has clips. In the final segment of the hour, Dua Lipa was on with Jimmy Kimmel last night, which means she was not in New York, which means the WNEW hosts lied to us. Gio knows where Dua Lipa is at all times, so he knew she was not going to be in NYC.  Hour 4 Gary Vee joins us on location from Vegas. Boomer said he's a very positive person, the opposite of everyone Boomer works with on the show. Gary said he's positive in all aspects of life except for the Jets. Gary thinks Super Bowl commercials are actually underpriced because people watch the game to also watch the commercials. We talked to Gary about Bud Light's controversy and how they're trying to get their audience back. Gary talked about eliminating friction for consumers when buying things. Gary likes that the Jets are underdogs now, as opposed to last year when everyone had them going to the Super Bowl. Gary said, ‘the Giants stink'. He also hates Steelers fans. Gary also talked about the importance of using Linkedin properly to get yourself the job you want. Jerry is here for his final update of the week and started with the Knicks/Mavericks from last night. Woody Johnson talked about the disappointing Jets season. He also said the defense was pretty good and would be better, ‘if our offense could do something'. The Moment of The Day involves a fart sound in a locker room. In the final segment of the week, it's our Super Bowl picks! Niners are -2.5 and Boomer is taking the Chiefs 30-27, Gio is taking the Chiefs 27-21 and Jerry is taking the Chiefs with Pacheco as the Super Bowl MVP (a Rutgers kiss up by Jerry). Jerry likes the Chiefs 19-10.

Under head coach Don Shula, the Dolphins improved their record significantly, reaching multiple playoffs, three Super Bowl appearances, and two Super Bowl victories, including a perfect season in 1972. Notable players like Bob Griese, Larry Csonka, Paul Warfield, and Jake Scott consistently made the Pro Bowl and All-Pro rosters throughout this period, playing a crucial role in the team's successes. However, the departure of key players such as Csonka and Warfield in 1975 led to some fluctuation in the team's performance. Despite these challenges, the Dolphins maintained a strong regular season record of 104–39–1 and a post-season record of 8–5 over the decade, capturing five division titles, three AFC titles, and two Super Bowl titles. You can read the full blog post here.YESTERDAY'S SPORTS BACKGROUNDHost Mark Morthier grew up in New Jersey just across the river from New York City during the 1970s, a great time for sports in the area. Do you have Standards on your Team? Chances are you do. Most leaders of any organization or in this case a sports team have rules and/or standards. In this episode we look at the standard that was set by a captain on the Miami Dolphins when Larry Csonka was a rookie and was about to take the field with his helmet off. The next question you have to ask yourself as a leader is do I have a standard for everything in my program or organization? Lastly, we look at how much freedom do you give your players or employees inside your organization. Is trust earned or given? The answer is BOTH. The year 1972 was a special year for the Miami metropolitan area. It was an election year when South Florida hosted the political conventions of both major parties, when the sitting president made Key Biscayne famous as the winter White House, and when Dade County approved a $553 million “Decade of Progress” bond issue to fund projects that would upgrade the county's infrastructure and cultural institutions. It was also the year of the “perfect season” for the Miami Dolphins. Tune into this week's podcast episode to hear about the early history of the Miami Dolphins and that magical season in 1972. Perfection, or going undefeated and untied for an entire season through the championship game, is a feat that had never been accomplished before or since the Miami Dolphins of 1972.

Thank you so much for listening. And as the music, we're listening to Smithsonian Folkways recording of Woody Guthrie, Hard Traveling. As I say, we've got a great guest today, who, after reading his new book, I've been looking forward to for a while and whom I'll introduce in just a moment…But, quickly, if you missed any episodes, last week was our 678th episode, and I spoke to NFL legend, a member of the only team in NFL history to be undefeated, and very entertaining guest Larry Csonka.  Two weeks ago had another great conversation with author and Smithsonian Associate Carole Adrienne about her new book, ‘Healing a Divided Nation. Wonderful stuff…If you missed those shows, along with any others, you can go back and check them out with my entire back catalog of shows, all free for you there on our website, NotOld-Better.com…and if you leave a review, we will read it at the end of each show…leave reviews on Apple Podcasts for us. Smithsonian Associate and popular returning guest Clay Jenkinson will be presenting at Smithsonian Associates coming up, so please check out our show notes for more details. I always enjoy speaking with Clay Jenkinson because I learn so much, and from your emails, to me after Clay appears on the show, you agree!  Clay is funny, too, and I laugh out loud.  Clay is a historian, a lecturer, and a Jeffersonian, in fact, Clay Jenkinson was the main commentator for Ken Burns' PBS documentary on Thomas Jefferson.  He is a CNN TV personality, and we have Clay Jenkinson today!  Jonathan Swift's Gulliver's Travels is often regarded as a children's book, but only by people who have never read it through. Swift was filled with "savage indignation" at the problems in the human character. According to our guest today, Clay Jenkinson, Gulliver's Travels is a work of genius, a witty, enchanting, and unrelenting critique of the optimism of the Enlightenment. Join me today for a wonderful conversation with humanities scholar Clay Jenkinson as Clay sorts out the meaning of ‘Gulliver's Travels,' and leads us on a journey into the dark recesses of the severest satirist in the English language. Football legend Larry Csonka joins Tim to talk about his life and what football has done for his life. Larry's a former fullback with the Miami Dolphins and the New York Giants. He was a Super Bowl MVP. He's an NFL Hall of Famer and a College Football Hall of Famer. He's a two-time Super Bowl Champion – a cornerstone of the NFL's only undefeated team – with the Miami Dolphins. And he's the author of a new book called, “Larry Csonka: Head On: A Memoir.” https://traffic.libsyn.com/secure/shapingopinion/Larry_Csonka_auphonic.mp3 Photo credits: Larry Csonka Personal Collection Larry Csonka reached the peak of his playing career as a football full back just as the game itself was reaching a peak of its own in the 1970s.  The best analogy might be to think of yourself as a mountain climber, and just as you are the one to get to the top of the tallest mountain, the mountain itself gets that much taller. That's where Larry Csonka was, at the top of his game in a sport that had just taken its place atop all other sports in America. In 1987, Larry Csonka was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. His Miami Dolphins Coach Don Shula presented Larry that day, and here's what he had to say about the Dolphins, their championships, their undefeated season, and Larry Csonka: “Behind all this success was Larry Csonka. He as simply the best fullback of his time. On first down, his average was 4.5 a carry. And when it got tough on third and short, everyone knew number 39 would get the ball…. Shula went on… “Larry played his best in the biggest games. He had three straight 1,000-yard seasons in 1971, '72 and '73. We went to the Super Bowl in each of these years…” "What separates Larry from some of the game's other greats is his superior competitive instincts and his love of playing football the old-fashioned way. It was blood and guts. Dirt all over him. Never leaving the game." And then Shula finished, “A five-time All-Pro choice, he had the respect of his peers. There was a lot of intelligence and talent on our Super Bowl teams. But I know where the heart was. Number 39. Larry Csonka." After residing several years in Anchorage, he and longtime partner, Audrey Bradshaw, maintain homes in Florida and North Carolina, and a farm in Ohio. For 16 seasons, he and Audrey Bradshaw, hosted and produced the outdoor adventure/travelogue series, “NAPA's North to Alaska.” This top-rated, nationally televised program aired on NBCSN showcasing adventures in the Last Frontier, its people, culture, wildlife, rich history and Larry's enthusiasm for outdoor sports and conservation. Miami Dolphins Tales From The Deep In celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the1972 Miami Dolphins Perfect Season, OJ and Seth revisit one of their favorite episodes featuring three legends from that championship team: Larry Csonka, Larry Little, and Mercury Morris. There were many factors that contributed to the perfect 17-0 record. One reason was their fearsome rushing attack that helped Miami become the first team in NFL history to feature two backs who each rushed for 1,000 yards in the same season. Those two backs were Pro Football Hall of Fame fullback Larry Csonka and the electric Mercury Morris. Paving the way for Csonka and Morris was an all-star offensive line lead by Hall of Fame guard, Larry Little. This legendary trio dives in to The Tank and it is no surprise that the result is one of our most spectacular episodes to date. From Csonka and Jim Kiick sneaking out of the team hotel through the bushes, to Little earning his poultry inspired nickname, to Morris' supernatural exploits with “The Root Man,” these guys are as dynamic on the mic as they were on the field!
