In this episode of The Brave Enough Show, Dr. Sasha Shillcutt and Latasha Ferguson discuss: The biggest lessons we learn from setbacks How limiting beliefs can creep in from unexpected places How to not allow prior failures to stop us from taking brave steps and big risks How community and peers are critical to our overcoming setbacks and failure Quote: “Often, as women, we count ourselves out before even thinking of counting ourselves in. We need community to help us remember who we are and what we can be.” - Latasha Ferguson Guest Bio: Latasha is an educator, workshop facilitator, and leadership coach with over 20 years in the trenches as a teacher, assistant principal, principal, and now director of instruction. Because of her experience as a woman of color climbing the ladder, she has a deep desire to see women of color professionals whole. She's also the founder of the Mahogany Table Community, where black women professionals gather to reclaim their time, rediscover joy, and trade survival mode for full-on thriving. When she's off-duty, Latasha's likely on a run, binge-watching a show, diving into a good book, or laughing so loud you'll hear her from across town. She's all about exploring new cities, tracking down food that feels like a hug for the soul, and cherishing time with her husband, four daughters, one grandson, and the beloved friends who keep her grounded (and laughing). Netflix is at it again! Recently, Netflix has released several new adaptations of kids' books, and I am here for it. Lyle, Lyle Crocodile was originally released in the theater and, I'll confess, isn't my favorite. But Lockwood & Co, a series about British teen ghost hunters that's based on a book series, is fantastic. And since The Magician's Elephant, which just came out this week, is based on a book by the wonderful Kate DiCamillo, I have high hopes for this animated film. NOTE: Lockwood & Co. is excellent, but it's not for little kids. It's pretty creepy, and while every family is different, I'd say it's best for 12-13 and older. I personally, as a grown adult, found some scenes a little scary! As always, I recommend consulting Common Sense Media to help you make decisions about what to watch. With all that in mind, and some scheduling issues making new episodes a struggle over here, I thought it was the perfect time to bring back an episode from last year. In episode #113, I was once again joined by my friend (and friend of the show) Latasha Ferguson, a speaker, writer, podcast host, educator, and mom. She's super knowledgeable about movies and books for kids, plus super fun too! And of course, because this is The Couch, where rabbit trails and side notes are always welcome, we'll also get into coffee, other podcasts, and something called a “15-minute rule.” It's a good one to enjoy again this year, so let's get started! "Heart Work" what exactly does that mean? Well today we're talking to my guest Latasha Ferguson who distinctly heard God say to her "Are you finally done"? We all have issues of the heart, Jeremiah 17:9 says "The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked; Who can know it? Blaming and looking at others is not the answer, the answer is surrendering to God and allowing Him to work in our hearts. We can all agree that it won't happen overnight, but there is a process to this "heart work". Latasha shares some great nuggets with us on how she surrendered and is now seeing the fruit of her surrender.
Let's talk women's bodies + healthy lifestyles, shall we? Podcaster + author Latasha Ferguson talks all about her own health journey and shares how she overcame being a single mom on welfare weighing the heaviest she ever weighed to where she is now - healthy + happy. We get into the shameful pathways of thinking + negative views women hold about their bodies. Latasha shares the work that really ended up changing her life + it isn't the cabbage soup diet. Latasha's story is one for any woman who has ever battled a relationship with food or unhealthy + unholy viewpoints of her body (which is many of us). You will feel so deeply inspired + have such powerful tools after listening to this incredibly honest + vulnerable conversation. Let's go meet my friend, Latasha.
