In this empowering episode of Healthy Mind, Healthy Life, host Avik welcomes Bernice McDonald, coach, speaker, and author of Brave Enough to Be Myself. Together, they explore the often-unspoken fears that hold us back from becoming who we truly are. Bernice shares insights from her transformative book, highlighting the concept of taking “tiny brave steps” and the power of befriending fear. She introduces listeners to the "hot air balloon" perspective—a way to rise above life's struggles and see the bigger picture—and the idea of embracing our "strange jewels," the unique gifts we often hide. This soulful conversation is a gentle yet powerful reminder that courage is about showing up every day, one small step at a time. About the Guest:Bernice McDonald is a transformational coach, speaker, and author passionate about helping women in the second half of life rediscover their courage and self-worth. With over two decades of coaching experience, she guides women through life's hardest challenges, one tiny brave step at a time. Her book Brave Enough to Be Myself is the first in her Little Books of Courage series, offering a four-week journey from self-doubt to self-acceptance. Key Takeaways: Courage is built on small, consistent actions, not grand gestures. Fear can be befriended, not battled—Bernice calls hers “Fred.” The “hot air balloon” perspective helps you rise above immediate struggles and view your life journey with clarity. “Strange jewels” are the unique traits we hide but can become our greatest strengths. Self-compassion is essential in balancing bravery without adding pressure to “fix” yourself. Not in Print: playwrights off script - on inspiration, process and theatre itself
Recorded at the Currency Press Festival of Playwrights 2023 Keynote Address by Andrea James - Are You Brave Enough? *** https://www.currency.com.au/authors/andrea-james/
Today we have a very special guest. From the stages of off-Broadway to the bright lights of Broadway, from his unmistakable voice to his performances in 30+ movies, Harvey Fierstein has spent a lifetime telling stories that matter. With four Tony Awards to his name—two for writing, two for acting—his work in Torch Song Trilogy, La Cage aux Folles, and Hairspray has redefined representation on stage. But beyond the accolades, there's the man: a Brooklyn-born artist whose journey has been shaped by family, resilience, and an unyielding belief in telling the truth. Harvey also has a deep love for sewing and costume design. Before becoming famous Fierstein studied art at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York and worked as a costume designer in the off-off-Broadway world. He has spoken about his passion for sewing in interviews, reminiscing about how he used to design and create costumes for drag performers and theater productions which helped shape his deep understanding of theatrical presentation and character development. His early work in costume design was part of his immersion in the vibrant New York theater community of the 1970s, where he collaborated with experimental and LGBTQ+ artists.Even as his career in theater took off with Torch Song Trilogy and Hairspray, sewing remained a part of his life. He has mentioned that working with fabric and creating garments is a meditative and creative outlet for him. His appreciation for costume design also extends to his theatrical work, where he often acknowledges the impact of great costume designers in bringing characters to life.So today we go beyond the footlights to explore the moments that made him—his early days, the influence of his parents, why Ridgefield, Connecticut became his adopted hometown and, why sewing has been an anchoring thread in his life. (2:15) We welcome the inimitable Harvey Fierstein! He shares how he first picked up sewing—starting with an industrial machine in his father's handkerchief factory—before setting his sights on becoming a Disney animator. But, things changed for him and as Harvey puts it, “Life only changes when you're brave enough to say yes.”(5:27) A deep dive into Harvey's quilting journey, from discovering HGTV and Alex Anderson to creating story-driven quilts today. His first quilt? Alex Anderson's Strips that Sizzle!(9:25) Growing up in a conservative Jewish household, Harvey learned the power of storytelling from his family. Education, art, music, and Broadway were all part of his upbringing, shaping the creative force he became.(11:45) Family isn't just who you're born to—it's also who you find. Harvey talks about his “found family” in the theatre, the people who call him “mama” and “papa,” and what it means to always be true to yourself.(13:32) Ever wonder what a Harvey Fierstein Stitch & Bitch session looks like? He spills all about his quilting experiments and creative process.(16:03) From bold colors to playful designs, Harvey shares his favorite fabrics and how he keeps things fresh alternating between challenging and just plain silly projects.(20:15) Picking a favorite quilt is like picking a favorite child—but Harvey gives it a shot!(23:20) The costumes that left a mark: Harvey reflects on the magic of theatrical costumes, the collaborative art of design, and why theatre itself is an act of faith.(27:07) Favorite roles—on stage, in film, and yes, even Death to Smoochy!(30:30) Writing his memoir I Was Better Last Night was a journey in itself. Harvey shares what inspired him to put his life on paper.(31:20) When did he finally feel accepted? And what really led him to move Torch Song Trilogy to Broadway? It's not the story you think!(32:31) A mother always knows! The moment Harvey's mom saw her own earrings on him during Torch Song Trilogy—and her priceless reaction.(34:00) What's the secret to his success? According to Harvey, it's all about taking that unexpected fork in the road.(38:38) The quilting class that changed everything: What Harvey learned from Kaffe Fassett, Brandon Mably and Liza Lucy.(39:10) Quilting vs. theatre—two creative worlds, two very different communities. Harvey compares the two.(40:54) The key to keeping every performance fresh? Harvey reveals how he does it.(43:06) Why Bridgefield, CT has been home for 40 years—and how Harvey's house reflects is unique perspective on life and art.(46:00) “As much as it hurts, tell the truth.” Harvey explains how this philosophy, shaped by his father, has guided his life and career.(47:25) What's next—what's left on Harvey's bucket list?(52:18) Want to connect with Harvey? When we hide our rejections, we become small. When we talk about them, the rejections become small. Today's special guest is Dr. Sasha Shillcutt, a trailblazer in both medicine and women's empowerment. Dr. Shillcutt is a cardiac anesthesiologist at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) and the founder and CEO of Brave Enough, a community dedicated to empowering women. Along with being a researcher, speaker, author, wife, and mom of four, Dr. Shillcutt is an advocate for gender equity and making space for women in leadership roles. This conversation is a must-listen for anyone who's faced rejection and wants to turn it into an opportunity for growth and redirection. Being rejected can propel you forward, if you choose to step out of shame, and instead learn to stand tall, embrace your journey, and keep moving forward with optimism. If you want to live a big and meaningful life, you will experience a lot of rejection. Rejection happens when you put yourself out there. When you stand out, you get cut down more often. When you get cut down as “Tall Poppy”, you can grow back taller and stronger, but it takes self-compassion, mindfulness, patience, and support. Rejection doesn't usually reflect our abilities or our work; we can be the best, and still face setbacks, not get a role, or have a marriage fail. Rejection is often not about you. It is also about fit, timing, and other people. It often means: "Not Yet, Not Here, or Not Now.” It can be a signal to course-correct and move toward something that aligns better with your true purpose. When we can learn to embrace rejection with curiosity, rather than internalizing it as a judgment of our worth, it can become a catalyst for growth and a life well-lived. High-achieving women often face criticism, resentment, and rejection. The more accomplished you are, the more likely you will be to face aggression and/or rejection, from those in positions of seniority and/or from your peers. If you want a kind and supportive community to help you navigate the world as a Tall Poppy, join Ongoing Presence Small Group Coaching. You can join the spring 2025 cohort until February 25th. Pause & Presence Retreats are also a beautiful nourishing space to turn your past rejections into growth experiences. You will acquire all the tools you need to turn them into catalytic events and launching points for a more aligned, meaningful, and joy-filled life. Join Jessie and Sasha at the Brave Enough Conference in September. Jessie will be leading a mentorship group, offering coaching, and teaching yoga and mindfulness. Together, they share personal stories of triumph over tragedy, the importance of cultivating kindness from a young age, and the profound ways it can heal individuals and communities alike. You'll walk away inspired to lead with kindness, knowing that even the smallest gestures can create lasting change. Key Takeaways: Kindness often requires bravery, especially when confronting adversity or standing up in challenging situations. Maeve's slogan, "Be brave enough to be kind," highlights how compassion combined with courage can change lives. Simple acts like writing notes, using someone's name, or offering a kind word can significantly impact others, creating a ripple effect that fosters community healing and connection. Programs like the Kindness Youth Leadership Team empower young leaders to take action, driving impactful initiatives in schools and communities that nurture empathy and understanding. From suicide prevention to supporting families through tragedy, kindness offers a powerful path to resilience and hope, showing how compassion can rebuild lives. Events like the Cultivate Kindness Breakfast provide a space to honor those making a difference and inspire collective action, proving that kindness truly has the power to transform communities. About Maeve Riley: Maeve Riley is a Junior at Notre Dame de Sion High School. She has been a part of the Kindness Youth Leadership Team for 2 years. As part of KYLT she speaks at schools about spreading kindness, she helped organize a kindness week at her school, she participated in the Kindness Festival at the Jewish Community Center, and she designed one of the 7 promotional 7 days of kindness buttons. About Mindy Corporon: As an entrepreneur, thought leader and now author, Mindy's professional career spans from office assistant to the former CEO of a successful wealth management firm. Once a single mother dealing with divorce, Mindy has also experienced a life-threatening illness. Reaching the pinnacle of her professional career, Mindy was in the middle of raising her talented boys when tragedy struck. Mindy's father and oldest son were murdered by a white supremacist intent on killing Jews. In a split second, Mindy's life purpose changed from guiding people financially to helping people find space to learn about their differences and discover commonalities. With compassion and forgiveness Mindy shares her experience of loss as a daughter and a mother, a wife and co-worker both nationally and internationally. She encourages and motivates audiences to overcome life's challenges, one day at a time. In a time of division and the changing of the guard in America, Jan is reminded of a brilliant poem Amanda Gorman wrote for Joe Biden's inauguration four years ago. The words are more powerful tan ever, challenging us to be brave enough to uncover the light in ourselves so needed in difficult times, in our own lives, in that of a country, and of the world. Are we brave enough to be it?

At the time this episode airs, there are devastating wildfires in Los Angeles – and yet, I've seen some beautiful levels of response. When something bad happens, whether to one person or an entire community, people want to help. Consequently, I've been thinking a lot about how people show up for one another. In a world where so many feel disconnected, helping someone else is a way to feel less alone. Today's episode is about how to be there for people during a loss. These ideas are applicable to anybody experiencing a tragedy, from losing their home to losing a loved one. There is no perfect way to show up. Stop putting that pressure on yourself and be okay with the fact you're probably going to make mistakes. If you're in the middle of supporting someone now, know that you're doing matters. Keep being brave enough to show up.In this episode you'll hear about:Being okay with discomfort and the fact that you can't fix what's happening to somebody – but you can provide support for themLooking at immediate needs first: do they have physical shelter, food, water, or clothing? Do they need a place to sleep for the night? My own personal experience receiving help after losing my mom at age 13 – plus, the realities of freeze stateThe value of specific offers, doing what you're naturally good at, and coordinating with others via existing networksDos and don'ts when it comes to supporting people going through hard times (for example, DON'T try to force silver linings; DO validate their feelings)Resources & LinksLike what you hear? Original airdate: June 2, 2000 At some point in our lives, we all struggle with finding a sense of worthiness. Perhaps we've had some challenging life experiences that left us feeling hurt, with bruises that we've never fully healed from. My guest today, Amanda JP Brown, is intimately familiar with the struggle of finding worthiness. A former trauma therapist, Amanda's journey from a high school dropout and drug user to a college graduate with two master's degrees is a powerful testament to personal growth. Her book, “You're Brave Enough: 8 Daily Practices to Be Your Own HERO,” Is a guide for those seeking empowerment. Today, she uses her expertise to help women navigate their shame and stand confidently in their power. During our conversation, Amanda shared a message that is crucial for personal growth. She discussed how we can overcome past shame and become the true heroes of our lives so that we can live up to our highest potential. She encouraged us to create a life where we're free to be exactly who we are, free of expectations, and fully embodying every experience that has made us the people we are today.

Scott reflections on the quote from Amanda Gorman, "There is always light. If only we are brave enough to see it. If only we are brave enough to be it." Here is the entire poem, "The Hill We Climb," from which this quote comes: The Hill We Climb When day comes we ask ourselves, where can we find light in this never-ending shade? The loss we carry, a sea we must wade We've braved the belly of the beast We've learned that quiet isn't always peace And the norms and notions of what just is Isn't always just-ice And yet the dawn is ours before we knew it Somehow we do it Somehow we've weathered and witnessed a nation that isn't broken but simply unfinished We the successors of a country and a time Where a skinny Black girl descended from slaves and raised by a single mother can dream of becoming president only to find herself reciting for one And yes we are far from polished far from pristine but that doesn't mean we are striving to form a union that is perfect We are striving to forge a union with purpose To compose a country committed to all cultures, colors, characters and conditions of man And so we lift our gazes not to what stands between us but what stands before us We close the divide because we know, to put our future first, we must first put our differences aside We lay down our arms so we can reach out our arms to one another We seek harm to none and harmony for all Let the globe, if nothing else, say this is true: That even as we grieved, we grew That even as we hurt, we hoped That even as we tired, we tried That we'll forever be tied together, victorious Not because we will never again know defeat but because we will never again sow division Scripture tells us to envision that everyone shall sit under their own vine and fig tree And no one shall make them afraid If we're to live up to our own time Then victory won't lie in the blade But in all the bridges we've made That is the promise to glade The hill we climb If only we dare It's because being American is more than a pride we inherit, it's the past we step into and how we repair it We've seen a force that would shatter our nation rather than share it Would destroy our country if it meant delaying democracy And this effort very nearly succeeded But while democracy can be periodically delayed it can never be permanently defeated In this truth in this faith we trust For while we have our eyes on the future history has its eyes on us This is the era of just redemption We feared at its inception We did not feel prepared to be the heirs of such a terrifying hour but within it we found the power to author a new chapter To offer hope and laughter to ourselves So while once we asked, how could we possibly prevail over catastrophe? Now we assert How could catastrophe possibly prevail over us? We will not march back to what was but move to what shall be A country that is bruised but whole, benevolent but bold, fierce and free We will not be turned around or interrupted by intimidation because we know our inaction and inertia will be the inheritance of the next generation Our blunders become their burdens But one thing is certain: If we merge mercy with might, and might with right, then love becomes our legacy and change our children's birthright So let us leave behind a country better than the one we were left with Every breath from my bronze-pounded chest, we will raise this wounded world into a wondrous one We will rise from the gold-limbed hills of the west, we will rise from the windswept northeast where our forefathers first realized revolution We will rise from the lake-rimmed cities of the midwestern states, we will rise from the sunbaked south We will rebuild, reconcile and recover and every known nook of our nation and every corner called our country, our people diverse and beautiful will emerge, battered and beautiful When day comes we step out of the shade, aflame and unafraid The new dawn blooms as we free it For there is always light, if only we're brave enough to see it If only we're brave enough to be it

Are you sitting on a nail and not changing due to the fear of the discomfort of removing that nail? Discomfort, pain, and struggle feel familiar to most of us. We may not notice we are sitting on a nail. If we do, we are often so accustomed to discomfort we stay on the nail anyway. Transition and pivots, ie gettign of the nail are even more uncomfortable, even when they ultimately offer more freedom and space. Things often have to get SO bad before we are willing “give in” and change. What if we aren't "giving in" or giving up when we decide to get off a nail. What if we are giving ourselves permission to finally act in alignment with our core values. Who would you be, could you be, if you stopped sitting on so many nails? Some common thought patterns and beliefs that keep you sitting on nails: Scarcity mindset Not valuing yourself or your happiness. The belief that you don't deserve to have a comfortable pain-free life. The belief that being uncomfortable is a badge of honor Lack of boundaries Fear of change, the what if, or making a mistake Fear of judgment or being seen as " - " So used to discomfort and pain we don't notice the discomfort of the nail Believing that struggling and suffering and hard are valuable Listen to the episode to learn more. Hey friends! Welcome to Girls' Night! Today, we're revisiting a conversation I had with my friend, Dr. Sasha Shillcutt, on setting boundaries. If you've been a Girls Night listener for a while now, this isn't the first time you're hearing me talk about boundaries. And it's because this has been a HUGE lesson for me. I am historically bad at knowing what I want and what I need — at drawing lines and saying no. And for the longest time, I was okay with that. (Maybe even a little bit proud of it?) I like being helpful. I like being needed. I like feeling useful, capable, and strong. For years I thought that this was the best way to love the people I love: To always put their needs above my needs, to say yes to everything, to give but never take, and to have everything that's mine be theirs without limit — whether it was my stuff, my space, my time, or my energy. This is what I thought would lead to the healthiest, closest relationships. But over the last few years I've learned that the opposite is true. Boundaries are an absolutely essential part of healthy relationships. They're an essential part of a healthy life, of a healthy US. And that's what we're talking about here today. Our guest, Dr. Sasha Shillcutt, is a renowned cardiac anesthesiologist, professor, bestselling author and CEO and Founder of Brave Enough. Sasha is also a wife and a mother who has walked through seasons of loneliness, anxiety, and complete burnout. Needless to say, she has had to learn about boundaries the HARD way. She wrote a book called, Brave Boundaries: Strategies to Say No, Stand Strong and Take Control of Your Time where she helps us find the courage to implement boundaries in our own life. Here are just a few of the things she's going to teach us in this episode: How to take a personal boundary inventory and identify what boundaries we need Why saying no to others and yes to ourselves isn't selfish and can actually help us be a better version of ourselves (and love our people better!) How to kindly respond to someone if we receive backlash for the boundary we've set And so much more! One of my favorite things that Sasha says in the episode was, "The world will set your boundaries if you don't set them for yourself” and that couldn't be more true. I know there's a sense of hopelessness in the world right now, and to be very honest, there always will be. And something that I want to do here is I don't want us to deny reality. That is not what we do. And at the same time, I want you to look at the areas of your life where you are in the driver's seat.
