She's smart. She's capable. She's independent. But is she brave enough to ask for help? In a culture that idolizes self-sufficiency and pushes girls to “be your own hero,” many daughters are quietly drowning under the weight of silent struggles—too afraid to reach out for fear of being seen as weak, too used to hearing that needing others is a flaw. But what if asking for help isn't weakness at all? What if it's wisdom? This week on the Raising Godly Girls Podcast, co-hosts Rachael Culpepper and Melissa Bearden dive into one of the most countercultural lessons a parent can teach their daughter: how to embrace Biblical dependence. With honesty, humor, and Scripture, they unpack how girls today are wrestling with anxiety, control, and perfectionism—and how learning to ask for help might just be the freedom they've been praying for. Drawing from Isaiah 41:10 and Galatians 6:2, this episode encourages moms to model courageous vulnerability and practical interdependence. Through personal stories, faith-based parenting tips, and a powerful RGG Minute from American Heritage Girls Founder & Executive Director Patti Garibay on the link between anxiety and control, this conversation will help you identify where your daughter needs support—and how you can help her ask for it with confidence. In this episode, you'll learn: How to normalize asking for help in everyday moments with your daughter Practical ways to teach her to discern what's hers to carry—and what belongs in God's hands Why modeling your own dependence on God and community is essential in her discipleship How AHG equips girls to grow through mentorship, community, and Christ-centered leadership Scriptures Referenced: Isaiah 41:10 – “I will strengthen you and help you…” Galatians 6:2 – “Carry each other's burdens…” James 1:5 – “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God…” When your daughter learns that strength isn't found in doing it all alone—but in leaning on Christ and His people—she will walk through life with resilience, grace, and godly wisdom. So let's model that truth boldly. Let's raise girls who are strong enough to admit when they're not okay, wise enough to ask for help, and faithful enough to believe that God will answer. Explore more resources to raise girls rooted in Christ at raisinggodlygirls.com. To find or start an AHG Troop in your area, visit americanheritagegirls.org.

Maybe you're starting over. Maybe life doesn't go as planned. Maybe you feel like the restart is heavier than the first step ever was.If that's you, this episode is for you! Take a beat. Listen in, and do what next.
Morning Mantra: “Be brave enough to suck at something new.”Every once in awhile I set myself up for failure. For embarrassment. For defeat. Because every now and then I try something new. Something I've never done before. But I am willing to pay the price of learning to gain a new skill or experience.Every expert was once a beginner and if they never tried because they were afraid they would fail, well, we would have no one to learn from! No one would have ever created beautiful masterpieces. No one would have invented life-saving techniques. No one would have added that special ingredient to new recipes. No one would have had the opportunity to learn from their mistakes.Life is ABOUT taking chances, trying new things, learning. It's okay to try and to suck at it. The real mistake is to never try anything new for fear of it.#BeWillingToSuckAtSomethingNew #HorseHippie #MorningMantra #inspirationalQuotes #MorningMotivation #Equestrian #HorseLover #QuotesToInspire #HorseHippieBrand #HorseHippieBoutique
Hey mama, Today's episode is a little heart-to-heart, inspired by one of you. A listener reached out and saying she's struggling with making friends as a working mom... and it hit me deep. So we're diving all the way in this week! Let's be real…making friends as a grown woman is just plain awkward. It's not like when we were little and you could walk up on the playground and say, “Wanna be friends?” and that was that. Now it takes courage, intentionality, and a whole lot of emotional energy we don't always have left at the end of a long day. In this episode, I'm sharing a quote that really hit me: “Friendships in adulthood don't happen by accident. They happen because someone was brave enough to go first.” — Danielle Bayard Jackson Most of us are walking around hoping someone will reach out, invite us, start the conversation… while we sit quietly convincing ourselves that we'd be bothering someone if we did. But mama…what if you were the one who went first? Here's what you'll hear: • Why friendship feels harder as a working mom • The biggest myths about adult friendships • How I got out of my own way and started connecting with other moms • A mindset shift if you've been feeling too “busy” or “late” to make new friends • A simple challenge to help you build real connection this week

In this empowering episode of Healthy Mind, Healthy Life, host Avik welcomes Bernice McDonald, coach, speaker, and author of Brave Enough to Be Myself. Together, they explore the often-unspoken fears that hold us back from becoming who we truly are. Bernice shares insights from her transformative book, highlighting the concept of taking “tiny brave steps” and the power of befriending fear. Are you a risk taker and trust in the Universe? Do you lean forward into something you're dreaming about—a new path, a bold desire, a leap of faith—without knowing exactly how it'll turn out? Or maybe you're risk averse, holding on tight to what you know. You'd rather stick with what's familiar, even if it's ... They also touch on the importance of balancing the individual story with the broader context, and why we need to reevaluate how we see those who are experiencing pain or deemed ‘crazy'. Louize and Tony both finish by reading passages from some of their favourite literature, and share their hope that people never give up on themselves. This episode discusses some sensitive topics, please take care when listening. Today we have a very special guest. From the stages of off-Broadway to the bright lights of Broadway, from his unmistakable voice to his performances in 30+ movies, Harvey Fierstein has spent a lifetime telling stories that matter. With four Tony Awards to his name—two for writing, two for acting—his work in Torch Song Trilogy, La Cage aux Folles, and Hairspray has redefined representation on stage. But beyond the accolades, there's the man: a Brooklyn-born artist whose journey has been shaped by family, resilience, and an unyielding belief in telling the truth. Harvey also has a deep love for sewing and costume design. Before becoming famous Fierstein studied art at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York and worked as a costume designer in the off-off-Broadway world. He has spoken about his passion for sewing in interviews, reminiscing about how he used to design and create costumes for drag performers and theater productions which helped shape his deep understanding of theatrical presentation and character development. His early work in costume design was part of his immersion in the vibrant New York theater community of the 1970s, where he collaborated with experimental and LGBTQ+ artists.Even as his career in theater took off with Torch Song Trilogy and Hairspray, sewing remained a part of his life. He has mentioned that working with fabric and creating garments is a meditative and creative outlet for him. His appreciation for costume design also extends to his theatrical work, where he often acknowledges the impact of great costume designers in bringing characters to life.So today we go beyond the footlights to explore the moments that made him—his early days, the influence of his parents, why Ridgefield, Connecticut became his adopted hometown and, why sewing has been an anchoring thread in his life. (2:15) We welcome the inimitable Harvey Fierstein! He shares how he first picked up sewing—starting with an industrial machine in his father's handkerchief factory—before setting his sights on becoming a Disney animator. But, things changed for him and as Harvey puts it, “Life only changes when you're brave enough to say yes.”(5:27) A deep dive into Harvey's quilting journey, from discovering HGTV and Alex Anderson to creating story-driven quilts today. His first quilt? Alex Anderson's Strips that Sizzle!(9:25) Growing up in a conservative Jewish household, Harvey learned the power of storytelling from his family. Education, art, music, and Broadway were all part of his upbringing, shaping the creative force he became.(11:45) Family isn't just who you're born to—it's also who you find. Harvey talks about his “found family” in the theatre, the people who call him “mama” and “papa,” and what it means to always be true to yourself.(13:32) Ever wonder what a Harvey Fierstein Stitch & Bitch session looks like? He spills all about his quilting experiments and creative process.(16:03) From bold colors to playful designs, Harvey shares his favorite fabrics and how he keeps things fresh alternating between challenging and just plain silly projects.(20:15) Picking a favorite quilt is like picking a favorite child—but Harvey gives it a shot!(23:20) The costumes that left a mark: Harvey reflects on the magic of theatrical costumes, the collaborative art of design, and why theatre itself is an act of faith.(27:07) Favorite roles—on stage, in film, and yes, even Death to Smoochy!(30:30) Writing his memoir I Was Better Last Night was a journey in itself. Harvey shares what inspired him to put his life on paper.(31:20) When did he finally feel accepted? And what really led him to move Torch Song Trilogy to Broadway? It's not the story you think!(32:31) A mother always knows! The moment Harvey's mom saw her own earrings on him during Torch Song Trilogy—and her priceless reaction.(34:00) What's the secret to his success? According to Harvey, it's all about taking that unexpected fork in the road.(38:38) The quilting class that changed everything: What Harvey learned from Kaffe Fassett, Brandon Mably and Liza Lucy.(39:10) Quilting vs. theatre—two creative worlds, two very different communities. Harvey compares the two.(40:54) The key to keeping every performance fresh? Harvey reveals how he does it.(43:06) Why Bridgefield, CT has been home for 40 years—and how Harvey's house reflects is unique perspective on life and art.(46:00) “As much as it hurts, tell the truth.” Harvey explains how this philosophy, shaped by his father, has guided his life and career.(47:25) What's next—what's left on Harvey's bucket list?(52:18) Want to connect with Harvey? When we hide our rejections, we become small. When we talk about them, the rejections become small. Today's special guest is Dr. Sasha Shillcutt, a trailblazer in both medicine and women's empowerment. Dr. Shillcutt is a cardiac anesthesiologist at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) and the founder and CEO of Brave Enough, a community dedicated to empowering women. Along with being a researcher, speaker, author, wife, and mom of four, Dr. Shillcutt is an advocate for gender equity and making space for women in leadership roles. This conversation is a must-listen for anyone who's faced rejection and wants to turn it into an opportunity for growth and redirection. Being rejected can propel you forward, if you choose to step out of shame, and instead learn to stand tall, embrace your journey, and keep moving forward with optimism. If you want to live a big and meaningful life, you will experience a lot of rejection. Rejection happens when you put yourself out there. When you stand out, you get cut down more often. When you get cut down as “Tall Poppy”, you can grow back taller and stronger, but it takes self-compassion, mindfulness, patience, and support. Rejection doesn't usually reflect our abilities or our work; we can be the best, and still face setbacks, not get a role, or have a marriage fail. Rejection is often not about you. It is also about fit, timing, and other people. It often means: "Not Yet, Not Here, or Not Now.” It can be a signal to course-correct and move toward something that aligns better with your true purpose. When we can learn to embrace rejection with curiosity, rather than internalizing it as a judgment of our worth, it can become a catalyst for growth and a life well-lived. High-achieving women often face criticism, resentment, and rejection. The more accomplished you are, the more likely you will be to face aggression and/or rejection, from those in positions of seniority and/or from your peers. If you want a kind and supportive community to help you navigate the world as a Tall Poppy, join Ongoing Presence Small Group Coaching. You can join the spring 2025 cohort until February 25th. Pause & Presence Retreats are also a beautiful nourishing space to turn your past rejections into growth experiences. You will acquire all the tools you need to turn them into catalytic events and launching points for a more aligned, meaningful, and joy-filled life. Join Jessie and Sasha at the Brave Enough Conference in September. Jessie will be leading a mentorship group, offering coaching, and teaching yoga and mindfulness. Connect with Dr. Shillcutt at becomebraveenough.com and/or follow her on Instagram for more inspiration and empowerment. *Nothing shared in the Mindful Healers Podcast is medical advice. #physicianwellness #mindfulnesscoach #pauseandpresence #physiciancoach

At the time this episode airs, there are devastating wildfires in Los Angeles – and yet, I've seen some beautiful levels of response. When something bad happens, whether to one person or an entire community, people want to help. Consequently, I've been thinking a lot about how people show up for one another. In a world where so many feel disconnected, helping someone else is a way to feel less alone. Today's episode is about how to be there for people during a loss. These ideas are applicable to anybody experiencing a tragedy, from losing their home to losing a loved one. There is no perfect way to show up. Stop putting that pressure on yourself and be okay with the fact you're probably going to make mistakes. If you're in the middle of supporting someone now, know that you're doing matters. Keep being brave enough to show up.In this episode you'll hear about:Being okay with discomfort and the fact that you can't fix what's happening to somebody – but you can provide support for themLooking at immediate needs first: do they have physical shelter, food, water, or clothing? Do they need a place to sleep for the night? My own personal experience receiving help after losing my mom at age 13 – plus, the realities of freeze stateThe value of specific offers, doing what you're naturally good at, and coordinating with others via existing networksDos and don'ts when it comes to supporting people going through hard times (for example, DON'T try to force silver linings; DO validate their feelings)Resources & LinksLike what you hear? She's also the founder of the Mahogany Table Community, where black women professionals gather to reclaim their time, rediscover joy, and trade survival mode for full-on thriving. When she's off-duty, Latasha's likely on a run, binge-watching a show, diving into a good book, or laughing so loud you'll hear her from across town. She's all about exploring new cities, tracking down food that feels like a hug for the soul, and cherishing time with her husband, four daughters, one grandson, and the beloved friends who keep her grounded (and laughing). In this one, Eddie and Jerry geek out over Dune Prophecy, an amazing new Odin figure, wax nostalgic on the best figures from their youths and make a game for the SNES about the Heaven's Gate cult. Enjoy!

We carry our own weight in this world, we blow our own nose, as Epictetus says. It's what's right, it's what's fair, it's our job.
Hey friends! Welcome to Girls' Night! Today, we're revisiting a conversation I had with my friend, Dr. Sasha Shillcutt, on setting boundaries. If you've been a Girls Night listener for a while now, this isn't the first time you're hearing me talk about boundaries. And it's because this has been a HUGE lesson for me. I am historically bad at knowing what I want and what I need — at drawing lines and saying no. And for the longest time, I was okay with that. (Maybe even a little bit proud of it?) I like being helpful. I like being needed. I like feeling useful, capable, and strong. For years I thought that this was the best way to love the people I love: To always put their needs above my needs, to say yes to everything, to give but never take, and to have everything that's mine be theirs without limit — whether it was my stuff, my space, my time, or my energy. This is what I thought would lead to the healthiest, closest relationships. But over the last few years I've learned that the opposite is true. Boundaries are an absolutely essential part of healthy relationships. They're an essential part of a healthy life, of a healthy US. And that's what we're talking about here today. Our guest, Dr. Sasha Shillcutt, is a renowned cardiac anesthesiologist, professor, bestselling author and CEO and Founder of Brave Enough. Sasha is also a wife and a mother who has walked through seasons of loneliness, anxiety, and complete burnout. Needless to say, she has had to learn about boundaries the HARD way. She wrote a book called, Brave Boundaries: Strategies to Say No, Stand Strong and Take Control of Your Time where she helps us find the courage to implement boundaries in our own life. Here are just a few of the things she's going to teach us in this episode: How to take a personal boundary inventory and identify what boundaries we need Why saying no to others and yes to ourselves isn't selfish and can actually help us be a better version of ourselves (and love our people better!) How to kindly respond to someone if we receive backlash for the boundary we've set And so much more! One of my favorite things that Sasha says in the episode was, "The world will set your boundaries if you don't set them for yourself” and that couldn't be more true.
