10 months on the waitlist, and well worth it! Casa Bonita is the definition of a dining "experience" with its hodgepodge collection of oddball acts and entertainment, but is it worth flying out of state to grab dinner? I break down this kitschy paradise with my guest, the hilarious Ify Nwadiwe (Dropout TV, Um Actually, Maximum Film) in this week's review episode! The Good: Cliff divers are tremendous fun, the puppet show is expertly entertaining, the magician is a pro, the merch is unrivaled, the food is way better than its reputation would have you believe, a Love Tester machine tells me I'm "burning" with passion, and much more! The Not Good: Manbearpigrilla's handler snubbed us out of a photo op, there's too much to do in one visit, the service pace is overwhelmingly fast, a food assembly line, and there's a lack of clarity on the best way to experience the show The Just There: Rice & beans were whatever What We Ate: Horchata, the Wooly Bully, Chips & Salsa, Mole, Carnitas, Rice, Beans, Enchiladas, & Sopaipillas Ify details his worst & best restaurant experiences in The Calibration Station The second highest score in the history of the podcast! Dennis is joined via Zoom by film critic Alonso Duralde to discuss his new coffee table book Hollywood Pride: A Celebration of LGBTQ+ Representation and Perseverance In Film. It's a beautifully written and designed book about at the history of queer people in the movies, both in front of the camera and behind the scenes. Alonso talks about the artists and films that weren't on his radar before he began his research and shares insights about some of the films in the book like including Prick Up Your Ears, Philadelphia, Brokeback Mountain, Parting Glances, Longtime Companion and Making Love. He also talks about what it's like to be the busiest gay in film criticism with five regular podcasts--Linoleum Knife (with his husband, film critic Dave White), Breakfast All Day, Maximum Film, Deck the Hallmark and the just-launched The Film Library. Other topics include: the gay cinematographer that shot Rocky, why queer millennials love The Mummy, how he cries more watching movies than he does in real life, his seeming unflappability, the 2016 surprise party for Dennis that Alonso attended, getting recognized on the street and the movie that made him cry so hard he had to go to the lobby to pull himself together. Following the interview with Alonso, there's also a short interview with comedian Jim David who appears in the new Netflix documentary Outstanding.

Alonso Duralde, of our sister Max Fun podcast Maximum Film and many other projects joins us to discuss something that is, technically, a film, and not a pile of feces. But it's a tough call! In honor of Pride Month and also Alonso's new book Hollywood Pride, our guest pitched us some bad LGBTQ+ themed movies, and (in lieu of trashing some failed films with their hearts in the right place) we decided to critique one of the most retrograde comedies of the 2000s: motherfucking Boat Trip. Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth Interview with Alonso Duralde, Film Critic, Podcaster, Author, “Hollywood Pride: A Celebration of LGBTQ+ Representation and Perseverance in Film” About Harvey's guest: Today's guest, Alonso Duralde, is a renowned film critic, journalist, author and podcaster whose movie reviews and commentaries have brought him great respect, both within the film industry and among the general public. He's held a number of prestigious positions, including artistic director at the USA Film Festival in Dallas, arts and entertainment editor at The Advocate magazine, film critic for MSNBC.com, senior film critic for The Wrap, and featured critic for Rotten Tomatoes. He co-hosted the T Y T Network program “What the Flick”, and he's been a writer and editor for The Village Voice, Movieline, and Detour Magazine. Currently, he's the Chief US Film Critic for The Film Verdict. In 2005 our guest wrote a great book entitled, “A Hundred and One Must-See Movies for Gay Men”. Five years later, he published another really fun book called “Have Yourself a Movie Little Christmas”, which highlights the best – and worst – movies of the Yuletide season. A few years ago he followed that up with another wonderful book that he co-authored, entitled, “I'll Be Home For Christmas Movies”. And now, he's released his brand new book published by TCM entitled, “Hollywood Pride: A Celebration of LGBTQ+ Representation and Perseverance in Film”. This meticulously researched and beautifully written book reveals the fascinating and often suppressed history of the evolution of queer culture on film, spanning from the dawn of cinema, through the “pansy craze” of the 1930s, the Red Scare of the ‘50s, the New Queer Cinema of the ‘90s, all the way up to today, chronicling the evolution of LGBTQ+ storytelling. This comprehensive book is entertaining and insightful, and highlights the most important, groundbreaking movies, and showcases the achievements not only of the actors, but also the writers, directors, producers, and others behind the scenes, whose achievements defined and exemplified the best of the film industry. Our guest is a member of the Los Angeles Film Critics Association and the National Society of Film Critics, and he currently co-hosts THREE highly popular podcasts: “Linoleum Knife”, “Maximum Film” and “Breakfast All Day”. He's also appeared on CNN, PBS, TCM, ABC, in addition to being featured in numerous documentaries. Today's movie premiered at Cannes 2022 and was the Cambodian entry for Best International Feature at this year's Oscars (though it didn't make it off the shortlist).
