After feeding the 5,000 and walking on water, Jesus' teaching about eating His flesh and drinking His blood provokes offense and desertion among many followers. Yet Peter's bold confession—“Lord, to whom would we go? You have the words of eternal life”—models wholehearted commitment. We're challenged to follow Jesus on His terms, not ours, fully surrendering every part of our lives to the true Bread from heaven.Sermon NotesIntroductionPastor Nathan situates us in the ongoing John series (running through Easter), noting the heavy travel between Galilee, Jerusalem, and beyond. Crowds have witnessed two major miracles—feeding 5,000 on the mountainside and Jesus walking on the sea—so expectations for a deliverer are high. Last week ended with Jesus' declaration, “I am the true bread that came down from heaven,” setting the stage for today's difficult teaching and its fallout.Scripture PassageJohn 6:60–71 (NLT)Main PointsHard Teaching Reveals True DisciplesJesus' call to “eat my flesh and drink my blood” shocks many into desertion, exposing shallow faith based on signs rather than the Savior Himself.Dependence on the Spirit“The Spirit alone gives life” (v63); human effort and intellect cannot bridge the gap—only divine enabling draws us to Christ.Wholehearted CommitmentPeter's confession (“Lord, to whom would we go?”) models surrender: recognizing Jesus as the sole source of life and truth, even when His demands are hard.Illustrations & StoriesMiracle Recap: Feeding the 5,000, followed by the storm-tossed crossing and Jesus walking on water.“I AM” Statements: Jesus layers heavy claims—Son of Man, heavenly origin, bread of life—to press His identity and mission.Missionary Story: William Cohen in 19th-century India resisted renouncing Christ under threat, declaring, “Though none go with me, still I will follow.” His martyrdom ignited widespread faith.ApplicationExamine Your Motives: Are you following Jesus for convenience or for His character and promises, even when “His terms” conflict with your comfort?Surrender Control: Identify areas—wealth, opinions, relationships—where you cling to “your way” rather than God's way.Embrace the Spirit's Work: Trust the Holy Spirit to equip you for the hard demands of discipleship; human striving falls short.Commit Anew: Like Peter, affirm “To whom would we go?” and resolve to follow Jesus without reserve, regardless of cost.ClosingPastor Nathan invited the congregation to respond by singing “Christ Is Enough” and the hymn “I Have Decided to Follow Jesus,” making a communal commitment to stick with Christ through every trial and teaching challenge.Resources & LinksBible Passage: John 6:60–71 (NLT)Next Steps: Reflect on where you've made Jesus a “hobby” rather than Lord; journal prayerfully about areas needing full surrender.#hillschurch #beencouraged #nathanbell #evertonhills #brisbanechurch #brisbane #wesleyanmethodistchurch #hillschurchsermon

The work of the Spirit doesn't end with individual empowerment — it creates a Spirit-filled, united, and mission-driven Church. The Spirit gives diverse gifts for one shared purpose, binds believers together in unity, and equips us to be Christ's body in the world. 1 Corinthians 12:4–13 (ESV)Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills. For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit.Ephesians 4:1–6 (ESV)I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call— one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.John 17:20–23 (ESV)I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call— one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.
Title: Signs of The SpiritSpeaker: Rob BerrethScripture: 1 John 4:1-14Episode Overview:What does it really look like when the Holy Spirit moves? On this Pentecost Sunday, Pastor Rob walks us through 1 John 4 with help from Jonathan Edwards to distinguish between unreliable signs — emotional experiences, large crowds, or initial decisions — and the deeper, reliable fruit of genuine spiritual awakening. When the Spirit is truly at work, sin is battled, the Word is cherished, love overflows, and Jesus is exalted. In a moment where it feels like God might be stirring something fresh, this message invites us to pray for a real, Spirit-led awakening, starting in our own hearts.Key Highlights:• Jonathan Edwards' distinction between unreliable and reliable signs of the Spirit• The Spirit convicts of sin and leads believers to fight for holiness• Adoniram Judson's inspiring love for God's Word in a Burmese prison• Real faith results in love for God and love for others• Any true move of the Spirit will center on and exalt Jesus — not personalities, platforms, or feelings• Hopeful call for a fifth great awakening, beginning with real heart changeCall to Action:Ask the Spirit to search your life. Where are you seeing growth in holiness, hunger for the Word, love for others, and deeper worship of Jesus? Pray for a true awakening — in you, in the church, and across the city.Redeemer Church211 Northshore Dr. Bellingham, WA 98226www.redeemernw.org

We are excited to announce a NEW SERIES: Restoring the Gifts of the Holy Spirit. This is a practical guide to the Spiritual Gifts, for the Spirit-filled believer. The Gifts of the Holy Spirit is one of the most neglected aspects of what God has called us to earnestly desire. This is because of a lack of discipleship, fear, and histories of abuse. But today, Yeshua is calling His people to return to Spirit & Truth worship. The question is, do you believe in the power of the Holy Spirit, and what He has called you to? Blessed are those who believe before seeing, for they will see it! Support Rise on Fire Ministries by contributing to their tip jar: https://tips.pinecast.com/jar/rise-on-fireRead transcript

John 16:7-11 ESV 7 Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. 8 And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; 10 concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; 11 concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.
