Amber speaks with Lea Davison, a two-time Olympian in mountain biking. In this conversation, they discuss how Lea got into mountain biking and the idea and importance of competitive collaboration: how she and her American teammates worked together as a team to secure Olympic spots, in the individual sport of mountain biking. Davison shares the essential role that fun has played in her success, how she responded to the heartbreak of not being selected for the Tokyo Olympics, and how she has created space for girls and women in cycling through Little Bellas, the non-profit organization she founded with her sister. Lea also opens up about her journey to publicly coming out, why she felt like she had to choose between her Olympic dreams and being gay, and what made the difference for her to finally “live out loud.” She talks about the ongoing challenges faced by women and the LGBTQ+ community in sports and how she's picking up the mic to literally and metaphorically use her voice to make things better for other athletes. Today my guest is Sabra Davison, one of the founding powerhouse trio of women behind Little Bellas. Little Bellas should sound familiar to you by now if you've joined me for a pod or two before - it's an organization creating opportunities for girls to build life skills and confidence through mountain biking fun.As Sabra and her sister Lea started getting serious about mountain bike racing in college, they also started noticing what an anomaly it was to see more than a few women involved in most races. One fateful day, Angela Irvine happened to line up at a start with them (or should I say lined up behind them), and the conversation they struck up with her after the race turned into lots of Thai food and brainstorming about how to create a welcoming, supportive space for girls and women in the sport they all loved. From its humble beginning in rural Vermont, Little Bellas has grown into a nationwide program that has served over 4,500 girls through camps and weekly programs for riders of all skill levels. But don't let all the bikes fool you - while programs encourage and support skill progression and developing greater comfort on two wheels, Little Bellas make just as many memories at snack time and through crazy games they make up and play in their groups. I hope you'll follow Little Bellas on Instagram or Facebook - you can also get tons of information about Little Bellas programs and mentorship opportunities on their website, LittleBellas.com.Useful links from our convo:Become a Little Bellas mentorLea Davison (@leaeatsalot) on Instagram (forgot to mention, Lea is a two-time Olympian and has hit podiums at multiple World and National Championships. Sabra Davison grew up ski racing and running, but when she got into mountain biking, she saw girls participating at far lower rates — so she decided to do something about it. Sabra (along with her sister, World Cup XC racer and two-time Olympian, Lea) founded Little Bellas to get girls into riding bikes, and develop the confidence to keep with it. We sat down with Sabra to talk about Little Bellas; how to make skill building fun; removing barriers to participation in what is an expensive sport; and a whole lot more.TOPICS & TIMES:Little Bellas' mission (1:03)Sabra's riding background & switching gears (2:02)World Champs qualification (3:45)Founding Little Bellas; ski racing & running vs. mountain biking (5:38)Little Bellas programs & “disguised fun” (8:13)Girls' attitudes to exercise and the outdoors (12:31)Pro ambassadors & downplaying competition (17:53)Gear Up program & removing barriers to participation (24:06)How to get involved (27:49)Sabra's Big Idea (29:21)RELATED LINKS:Little BellasBecome a Blister MemberCamping in Gunnison & Crested Butte See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Sabra Davison is quite simply put, a rock star! Her lifelong passion for the outdoors and for cycling starts to explain her title as Executive Director, and Adventurer in Charge of Little Bellas, a national nonprofit committed to helping girls realize their full potential through mountain biking. Sabra actually co-founded Little Bellas in 2007 with her sister Lea Davison and close friend Angela Irvine as she was finishing up her degree in Women's and Gender Studies from Middlebury College. What I admire most about Sabra is how she took time out of her busy schedule as a young competitive mountain biker and skier to reflect on the personal strengths those sports gave her, and then develop a path to share those strengths with other girls and women so they too can benefit from them. Or as she puts it “reaping the intrinsic rewards of a hard ride”. We hope you enjoy this interview recorded live at the 2018 Sea Otter Classic. We built this interview series from the title of our newest children’s picture book Taking The Lead that follows our animal characters along a journey to open a local bike shop and inspire their town to ride. Remember the first time you pedaled off on your own Freedom machine, without Mom or Dad’s steading hand? Two time Olympic mountain biker Lea Davison remembers, and in this interview you’ll hear how the bike was her ticket to freedom as a young girl... and a steady supply of Snapple. Today Lea strives to take The Lead on the world cup mountain bike circuit and definitely takes the lead with her continued dedication to empowering girls through the non-profit she co-founded, Little Bellas.
