And are those medals really made out of gold, silver and bronze? And we speak with Paralympian Emelia Perry, who's competing in the paratriathlon in Paris! Lea Davison thought long and hard about her retirement, but even when she finally decided to bring her mountain biking career to a close, she didn't have any intention of slowing down. During her racing career, she won a silver and a bronze medal at the World Championships, placed third overall in the 2015 World Cup series, and went to the Olympics twice. Now in "retirement," she's working as a race commentator, mountain biking coach, and public speaker. Last year, she traveled more for work than she did at any point during her racing career. Payson caught up with Lea at Unbound earlier this month to talk about how busy her work has been since stepping away from the World Cup circuit, why she was devastated to miss out on the 2020 Tokyo Olympics team, and how racing Unbound in 2022 forced her to confront the weight of her retirement. She also talks about a turning point a few years ago when she decided to go all-in on advocating for women in cycling, the difficulty of coming out as one of the few openly gay athletes in the sport in 2018, and her elaborate routine for preparing for the grueling 15 hour day of commentating for Unbound. Amber speaks with Lea Davison, a two-time Olympian in mountain biking. In this conversation, they discuss how Lea got into mountain biking and the idea and importance of competitive collaboration: how she and her American teammates worked together as a team to secure Olympic spots, in the individual sport of mountain biking. Davison shares the essential role that fun has played in her success, how she responded to the heartbreak of not being selected for the Tokyo Olympics, and how she has created space for girls and women in cycling through Little Bellas, the non-profit organization she founded with her sister. Lea also opens up about her journey to publicly coming out, why she felt like she had to choose between her Olympic dreams and being gay, and what made the difference for her to finally “live out loud.” She talks about the ongoing challenges faced by women and the LGBTQ+ community in sports and how she's picking up the mic to literally and metaphorically use her voice to make things better for other athletes. Kate Courtney, Lea Davison, Haley Batten, Chloe Woodruff, Erin Huck, and Hannah Finchamp are not teammates by the traditional definition. The six members of the U.S. women's Olympic long team all ride for different trade teams, and are backed by different sponsors. In the push to qualify for the games, success by one woman denies another woman her Olympic dream. Despite these facts, the six women are following a collaborative effort in the lead up to the Olympics. They are training together and pushing each other to be at their best. They are chasing UCI points together so that the U.S. will get the maximum three spots in Tokyo. And they've adopted the moniker called 'Team USlay,' and a mindset that values success of the group over individual glory. On this week's episode of The VeloNews Podcast we discuss this collaborative mindset with the six women. As it turns out, there are deep lessons to be learned about self confidence, vulnerability, and motivation from these six riders as they all strive to achieve their personal and collective goals. Before we hear from the six, Jim, Fred, and Andy break down all of the action from Strade Bianche, which saw Mathieu van der Poel unleash an explosive 1300-watt attack to win the race. They also discuss the team dominance of SD Worx, and try to understand how the Dutch team is dominating the early part of the season. All that and more on this week's episode of The VeloNews Podcast.

On this week's episode of The VeloNews Podcast, we have to very special guests. First up is author Daniel DeVisé, whose seminal book on Greg LeMond "The Comeback: Greg LeMond, the True King of American Cycling, and a Legendary Tour de France" has led to an important piece of news. The U.S. Congress is going to vote on whether to award LeMond the Congressional Gold Medal, one of the highest awards given to a civilian. As it turns out the lawmaker who proposed the medal, CA Rep. Mike Thompson (D-CA 5th District, got the idea after reading DeVisé's book. We ask DeVisé about the award, why Thompson believes LeMond deserves it, and whether or not the U.S. government will actually approve the award. Next up is Lea Davison, the veteran of U.S. cross-country mountain bike racing. Davison's career has seen incredible highs, as well as a few crushing lows, and she discusses them all in great detail. Plus, she discusses how a professional women's cyclists overall value has shifted during her pro career. Davison is hoping to qualify for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, and she discusses the long pathway she will be on to try and achieve this goal, which would cap off an already impressive career.
Sabra Davison is quite simply put, a rock star! Her lifelong passion for the outdoors and for cycling starts to explain her title as Executive Director, and Adventurer in Charge of Little Bellas, a national nonprofit committed to helping girls realize their full potential through mountain biking. Sabra actually co-founded Little Bellas in 2007 with her sister Lea Davison and close friend Angela Irvine as she was finishing up her degree in Women's and Gender Studies from Middlebury College. What I admire most about Sabra is how she took time out of her busy schedule as a young competitive mountain biker and skier to reflect on the personal strengths those sports gave her, and then develop a path to share those strengths with other girls and women so they too can benefit from them. Or as she puts it “reaping the intrinsic rewards of a hard ride”. We hope you enjoy this interview recorded live at the 2018 Sea Otter Classic. Remember the first time you pedaled off on your own Freedom machine, without Mom or Dad’s steading hand? Two time Olympic mountain biker Lea Davison remembers, and in this interview you’ll hear how the bike was her ticket to freedom as a young girl... and a steady supply of Snapple.
