Looking for an easy way to de-stress and improve your mental well-being? In this episode, Matt O'Neill speaks with yoga therapist and meditation expert Ann Swanson about how only one minute of meditation per day can make a big difference. Discover how small changes like spending time outside or meditating in line at the grocery store can boost happiness. Learn practical techniques for integrating brief yet powerful mindfulness practices into your busy life. Here are some power takeaways from today's conversation: Meditation as a key to happiness Meditation techniques, including walking meditation, and its benefits for mental health and blood sugar control Meditation and mindfulness for busy lives Incorporating meditation into daily routine through various activities Yoga and meditation for mental well-being [04:45] Getting Back in Touch with Nature Studies have found that spending time in nature, such as walking in woods, increases natural killer cells and other parts of your immune system which help fight off tumors and foreign invaders. Walking meditations in nature can help you to truly be happier and return to a state of well-being that humans are naturally meant to experience. [10:04] Optimizing Exposure to Natural Light Ann recommends getting morning light near sunrise to set one's circadian rhythm and improve alertness. Spending time in midday sunlight is also important as it signals the peak of the day. The changing sky colors at sunset help reduce cortisol levels and raise melatonin production, preparing the body for sleep. [12:51] Getting Started with Meditation Ann recommends trying walking meditation, which allows flexibility and integration into daily life. Set specific intentions or focus points for each step. This can help change one's mood and has additional health benefits like lowering blood sugar spikes. For those new to meditation, walking practices may be better than rigidly following sitting techniques that don't suit one's needs or lifestyle. [16:22] Walk Like You're the Happiest Person on Earth Ann shares a walking meditation technique taught by Thich Nhat Hanh. She explains that when walking, one can set the intention to "walk as if you were the happiest person on earth." Even if not feeling happy in the moment, imagining how the happiest person may walk can help alter posture, breathing, and perspective. This simple practice of pretending to be the happiest person can start to shift one's mood for the better in just a few minutes of walking meditation. [19:11] Brief Mindfulness Practices for Busy Lives Ann suggests one-minute meditations throughout the day to reset when feeling distracted or stressed, and finding times before, during or after existing routines like making coffee can help form a new habit. Additionally, being mindfully present during commutes or integrating meditation into transition periods after tasks promotes relaxation and allows busy individuals to still reap meditation's mental and emotional benefits. Peter discovered that the most popular course in Yale's over 300-year history was the “Class on Happiness”. Really, no Really! In the modern era, happiness has become an industry, with motivational speakers and self-help gurus promising to teach techniques that unlock the gates to everlasting joy. Yet for many, happiness remains elusive because it's influenced by numerous factors and is a deeply personal and subjective journey. Since Jason and Peter (both experts when it comes to anxiety) are both aware of the greatly increased rates of depression in today's society, they decided to go to Yale in search of answers and possibly some personal joy! Dr. Laurie Santos is a Professor of Psychology and Head of Silliman College at Yale University, and teaches Psychology, and the Good Life - the happiness class. Dr. Santos created the course after witnessing and researching how depressed and overwhelmed her students and young people generally are. Give a listen... and you may find that your mindset changes… for the better. We Discuss: The “5 Senses Technique” to lower anxiety in 5 minutes. Hacking your Fight or Flight system. Jason's gratitude bed. Using the Tsao of Karen on negativity. The happiest person on Earth revealed. Prescription medication vs exercise. Do parents have an obligation for their children's happiness? Happy real estate agents exist, guys. It's not an oxymoron. YOU can learn to find happiness as a Realtor too.Our guest and I go way back. Back to my first days on Snapchat as a Realtor, which was early 2016. I met Katie Clancy on Snapchat, and I immediately was drawn to her, but I didn't know why. Before long, it became obvious. She was just so damn happy all the time, and it was contagious! Katie was always, and I mean always, smiling, laughing, making jokes, having a good time... while building a pretty damn successful real estate team in Cape Cod, MA. And the more I got to know Katie, the more I noticed her success grow and grow. But then I began to hear her story of some of the lowest times in her life, the struggles that no one really sees. Stuff that if Katie quit real estate for good, we'd all understand. But she didn't quit. She kept going, and moving forward. But as you'll hear today, Katie's success is a direct result of her CHOICES and her attitude every single day, for years at a time. Every Realtor out there struggles with the stress and emotion that comes with being a real estate agent. Every one. I believe this week's show is the road map for every Realtor out there to find happiness in themselves, even while working in one of the most tumultuous professions out there. In this Episode: Marc Mero, Former WWE Wrestling Champion and Author of How to be the Happiest Person on the Planet, reached the pinnacle of sports-entertainment success – then lost it all – but in the process discovered what’s most important in life. Everyone faces adversity. “It’s not how many times you get knocked down, it’s how many times you get back up. You can do anything you set your mind to!” About Marc Mero: Marc Mero experienced his first crisis at age eight when his parents divorced. He grew up in a single-family home in a poor section of New York, but wrote down his dreams and goals, setting his sights on athletics. Marc worked hard to achieve success in hockey, football, boxing, and professional wrestling. After reaching the pinnacle of sports entertainment as a WCW and WWE Wrestling Champion, Marc suffered enormous loss and learned that money and fame can’t buy happiness. “It’s NOT what’s in your pocket; it’s what’s in your HEART that truly matters! “Some people are so special, so beautiful and have so much to offer this world. Sad thing is they just don’t see it. They need positive reinforcement.
