Edvald Boasson Hagen has been one of the strongest riders in the peloton since he joined the world tour in 2008 with High Road. His surprise win at Gent-Wevelgem in 2009, stage win at the Giro, and powerful roleur style made him a key signing for the newly formed Team Sky in 2010. He won the team's first ever Tour de France stage, picking up two in 2011 and rode as a key domestique in part of both Bradley Wiggins and Chris Froome's Tour de France wins in 2012 and 2013 respectively. He's also added 10 Norwegian time trial titles, four road titles, a world championship silver medal, a third Tour de France stage win, a pair of wins each at the Tour of Britain and the Eneco Tour and three more GC wins at the Tour of Norway. Uma semana recheada de peripécias. Na Volta à Catalunha tivemos uma batalha a dois entre Primoz Roglic e Remco Evenepoel, com o esloveno da Jumbo-Visma a sair por cima, mas com alguma tensão entre os dois. O no lugar mais baixo do pódio João Almeida repetiu o lugar do ano passado, com exibições consistentes na alta montanha e mais batalhas internas, desta vez com Soler e Yates. No paralelo, na antecâmara da Tour de Flandres, tivemos duas grandes clássicas. O E3 Harelbeke viu Wout Van Aert, Mathieu Van der Poel e Tadej Pogacar medirem forças, numas das melhores corridas do ano e em que o belga levou a melhou. Van Aert voltou a repetir uma exibição de grande calibre na Gent-Wevelgem, mas deixando a vitória para o seu colega de equipa, Christophe Laporte, tema que foi motivo de muito falatória na imprensa belga. Quem também tem dado muito que falar, e não por bons motivos, é a Soudal-Quickstep que tem tido uma campanha de clássicas para esquecer, será que a alcateia vai a caminho de mais uma temporada sem grandes vitórias no paralelo?

Mathieu van der Poel could be part of a very elite club with 3 victories in the race as he hasn't finished outside the top 2 since 2019. Tento rok bol zjazd o niečo menej adrenalinový, napriek tomu sme videli únik 4 gigantov súčasnej cyklistiky s titulom pre Van Der Poela. Voor het eerst sinds 1985 heeft een Nederlander weer eens Milaan-San Remo gewonnen. Mathieu van der Poel pakte La Primavera door in de laatste vijf kilometer, bij de beklimming van de Poggio, weg te rijden bij Tadej Pogačar, Wout van Aert en Filippo Ganna. Lang nagenieten kunnen de wielerliefhebbers niet, want het feest gaat deze week gelijk weer verder met onder meer de Ronde van Catalonië, de Classic Brugge-De Panne, de E3 Saxo Classic en als toetje Gent-Wevelgem. In winning Gent-Wevelgem, Biniam Girmay made history by becoming the first Black African to win a classic. While he and his team were delighted with the win, Girmay isn't necessarily comfortable with the limelight. "I don't like to be the famous guy," Girmay said after the race. Recording in Belgium between Gent-Wevelgem and the Tour of Flanders, Sadhbh O'Shea and Ben Delaney discuss what Girmay's win means for cycling, and what it means for the young rider from Eritrea. Sadhbh and Ben also talk top prospects for the women's and men's Tour of Flanders this coming Sunday, where the eagerly awaited battle between Wout van Aert and Mathieu van der Poel has only been enhanced by the presence of Tadej Pogačar on the startline. And finally, Ben chats with WorldTour mechanic Raf Wittenberg of Human Powered Health about the differences and similarities in gear for pros and everyday riders — not just what they should use but how they should maintain it. In just his second ever race on the cobbles of Belgium, Eritrean cyclist Biniam Girmay is now a spring classic winner at Gent-Wevelgem, the first from Africa, throwing out preconceptions and perceived limitations of what African riders can achieve. It's a watershed moment in professional cycling, leaving much to discuss on this week's episode of Aérogramme. Jeremy Whittle and Peter Cossins once again join OJ Borg for another installment of the podcast from the spring classics, and they're eager to dive into the big result for Girmay. Hot off of taking fifth at E3, his first time riding on cobbles, the 21-year-old sprinted to the huge win. He employed clever tactics coupled with sheer power to win a race over many established classics riders who know these roads intimately.The discussion quickly turns to the importance of this win. What will the first cobbled classic victory by an African rider mean for the advancement of African and Black riders in cycling? And what does it mean for Girmay's life and career?But in order for this moment to happen, Girmay first had to break into pro cycling. He has been beating the odds for his entire life to find himself where he is now, coming from a country where, when he was born, one in two kids were severely malnourished. Dr. Stuart Gillespie, a senior fellow at the International Food Policy Research Institute, joins the show to provide context about Girmay's home country of Eritrea, its cycling culture and what his accomplishment will mean for the country.Later, the discussion turns to etiquette and manners within the pro peloton and how new riders are rewriting traditional attitudes and norms of the sport. A historic Gent-Wevelgem with a historic first classics with for a man and his country, and for that matter his continent. Jumbo Visma seems to be the most dominant this spring and the guys look ahead to Flanders for a big showdown with Pogacar, Van Der Poel, and Van Aert, although two of the guys did not pick them.
