Leila was selected by audience vote as the cover story for the most recent issue of Savvy Girl Magazine which featured the Top 25 Under 25. She’s a PHENOMENAL young woman who’s worked her way up at Amazon, created initiatives to support women in the workplace, and is involved in multiple female empowerment organizations. In this episode, Allison and Leila talk about the importance of mentorship, challenging ourselves to pave the way for others to be successful, and navigating challenging situations.Memorable moments:5:17: I believe in diversity of thought and the critical need for inclusive leadership. I want to see more women in positions to make decisions, controlling resources, shaping policies, and perspectives and Lift, and Be Uplifted follows the idea that a gender-balanced world and workplace benefits everyone.9:52: Not every girl has a relatable role model that they can identify with in their lives. It's hard to be her if you can't see her. 11:46: Not giving up and quitting was winning. 12:39: Go for it, try it out. Don't give up and take yourself out of the game so early, because you're going to impress and really shock yourself. 14:54: I'm not sure we really understand the true meaning of authenticity and what it means to be authentic. It's no matter how uncomfortable it is or how much self-doubt you hold onto you, how you show up fully as the real, you, all of you, no matter what others may say or think about you, that is authenticity.15:13: I always tell women when I speak to them that sometimes the one thing that makes you different is the one thing that sets you apart.Book recommendations:Moment of Lift: https://amzn.to/3l79HfkThe Most Powerful Woman in the Room is YOU: https://amzn.to/3chCNV2Bio:As an advocate for women gaining seats of influence in non-traditional women careers, Leila Sabet has made her mark in the workplace by stepping up to serve as a leader women need most. Her upbringing in a dual-cultural household was key to her mission being rooted in equality with the larger narrative on diversity. Understanding that unconscious bias is built into our culture, Leila has made a point to hold the door open for young women who come after her through her initiative, Lift & Be Uplifted: Increasing Women’s Influence in the Professional World. She is on the Board of Directors for Girls Inc, shares involvement in the Girl Up Campaign, and many University-based leadership organizations, as well as serving as a champion for UN initiatives that support women and girls globally. Leila specializes in helping ambitious young women build a self-empowerment mindset and close the “confidence gap” by leveraging her behavioral psychology education and leadership experience. There are a lot of conversations about girls at the moment and whether or not enough has been done to give them equality in the workforce during their lifetime - especially today, International Women's Day. Today's guest says that she wants her daughter to grow up in a world where she has choices about where she works and what she does, but feels there are still not enough role models for them, particularly in professions dominated by men. Kate Bushell is the CEO & Founder of Girls of Impact and is helping girls realise they can be whatever they want at any age, and has some brilliant advice for parents of girls. Quotes: “We don't make everybody do a little bit of everything every day.” “The North Star approach offers teens a headstart on life. When I say school is optional, school is optional for learning and school is optional for a credential. “ “Everything I'm saying hinges on the concept that there is an alternative to traditional high school that is functional to go to university or to be included into the, you know, Professional World.” “When I say school is optional, for me, it has all the tension and emotion of like summer camp is optional. “ “Kids could go to school and like it or not like it. It's going to be okay and it's not going to define their lives. “ “ We believe that kids can do okay just fine, without school, the same way they do just fine, after school or during the summers.” “Things have to be resolved and not lived with a lot of times. Some things can be lived with, but a lot of things can't.” “They get to a point where they want to just know that they're doing the thing they're doing for themselves of their own free will and not out of fear or pressure from their parents.” “Don't compare what your kid is doing to some idealized homeschooling life. Let's compare what your kid is doing in their weekly routine right now, to what it would be most likely going on for them.” Social Links: Kenneth Danford LinkedIn - www.linkedin.com/in/kenneth-danford-38124628/ Website - http://www.kennethdanford.com/ Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/ken.danford.7 North Star - http://www.northstarteens.org/ Liberated Learner - https://liberatedlearners.net/ Learning is Natural, School is Optional.: The North Star approach to offering teens a head start on life Book

Joining me is an absolutely incredible athlete and Professional Golfer from Auckland, New Zealand- Phillis Meti, who is also the world record holder for the longest drive by a woman ever, at an incredible 413 yards! Phillis has been crowned the very best in the World, winning the World Championship of Women's Long Drive an amazing 3 times! Phillis shares her incredible story with me, starting with how she played sport from a young age, with coaching and encouragement from both of her parents, who really helped her, as well as growing sport in their wider community as well. Phillis began competing in the highly physical paddelling sport of “Waka Ama” https://teara.govt.nz/en/waka-ama-outrigger-canoeing, as well as elite level netball and athletics. Phillis went on to represent New Zealand at the Junior Commonwealth Games in 2004, competing in the discuss and shot putt, placing 8th and 4th respectively. http://www.olympic.org.nz/athletes/phillis-meti/Phillis realised she wasn't quite as strong as her friend and rival Valerie Adams (4 times World shot putt Champion) though, who stands an impressive 6 ft 4 inches, while Phillis said she topped out at 5 ft 11! Phillis's father was a keen golfer and helped get her into the sport, where she represented the Auckland region “North Harbour”. When Phillis was 19 years old, her mother suggested she compete in the 2006 World Long drive championships. Phillis smacked the ball 326 yards to win the event on her first try and become World Champion! Phillis shares with me plenty of great tips on how to hit the ball further and provides some great advice from her mentors and also discusses her mindset when competing. She also talks more about some of the ups and downs of competing in long drive, as well as the large gender pay gap in long drive, compared to other sports such as Tennis. Phillis also shares her exciting goals and ambitions. Thanks very much for your time Phillis, it was an absolute pleasure hearing your story and best of luck for your next season! We start off by talking about Ethan’s successful Kickstarter, the Brancopan. It’s been made real by you, the listeners along with others. This week our guest is Jeff Perry from 20th Century Camera (https://20thcenturycamera.com/) We learn about Jeff’s real age (he’s nine, folks) and how he got started in photography and then built an automatic Jello Shot machine. We find out that while Jeff likes modifying old cameras, part of his design ethic is to make any modifications reversible so the cameras can be restored to their original operation. Jeff’s not only a camera modifier but also is a designer of full cameras, shutter systems, and the like. Jeff makes a line of developing “reels” in sizes from 2 by 3 to 8 by 10 for sheet film (listen to the show for the full list or visit https://20thcenturycamera.com/). We get the story of the development (pun!) of these devices. We roll on to our goals for 2020. Graham has purchased but not yet received the book, Build Your Own View Camera!: An Easy and Inexpensive Passport to the Professional World of Photography for the Hobbyist by Bert West. He'll let everyone know what it's like when he gets it. Jeff mentioned Peter Gowland (https://www.petergowland.com/) and Norman Dean (@analognmd on Instagram) who makes roll film backs for Polaroid Land cameras. Graham mentions: Ryan Wyss https://www.ryanwyss.com/cold-camera/2020/1/9/cold-cam-v2 Mina Saleeb asked if Graham was going to make a 6X15 or 6X17 version of the 6Twelve. The answer is not right now but maybe soon. Michael Catalano mentioned that he is in the process of creating a 6X12 as well. Today we are going to try to tackle a pretty large issue. By no means can we cover everything related to this topic in just an hour, but we did our best. In today's world where professionalism takes precedence in almost every aspect of life and showing your emotional struggles to your boss risks getting fired because they'll think you don't like your job, how do we cope with things like depression and anxiety. Especially when we're spending 40 hours a week at a place where we have to put on a mask. Reach us @tifupod on Twitter, tifupod@gmail.com, or give us a call, text or leave a voicemail @ 401-314-8438

What is a historian? How are they trained? What do they do? What should they do? Are they doing it well? These important questions addressed in James M. Banner, Jr.‘s excellent Being a Historian: An Introduction to the Professional World of History (Cambridge University Press, 2012). Banner knows whereof he speaks: he’s been working historical trade in various capacities (far more varied than most, I’m happy to say) for half a century. He’s a careful observer, a trenchant critic, and (something I found refreshing) an unrelenting optimist. In this interview he talks about the historical discipline, professional historians, and historians (including history majors!) working in a great variety of occupations. If you are a thinking about studying history, already study history, or are in one of the historical trades, you would do well to read this book. Learn more about your ad choices.
