GM Ross takes on a journey into a brand new actual play adventure using the Kids On Bikes roleplaying game! The year is 1985 and something strange is afoot in the small town of Sasquatch Wyoming and it's up to a group of 12 year olds to get to the bottom of it.You can pick up Kids on Bikes for yourself by going hereMusic thanks to White Bat AudioFollow us on Facebook, Tumblr, Instagram, YouTube, and Discord!
It's the finale of our first Kids on Bikes episode! The kids (sans bikes) literally descend once more into the strange conspiracy beneath Davis, risking their own hides for the good of their new weird little friend. Can they free Duende's "parent," and when they do, could some kind of complication somehow arise from freeing a giant tentacled memory-eating alien? Listen and find out! Content warning for underground facilities, tentacles, strangulation, accelerated time, and winged monsters. Intro and outro music from "Come Play with Me" and "Anxiety" by Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com/) License: CC BY (creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/)
The teens and veterinarian of Undecided eventually meet up with their new... friends, and resolve to continue to investigate the strange glowing stones found around town...Kids on Bikes is a game of collaborative storytelling in small towns with weird goings on, by Jon Gilmour and Doug Levandowski. The game is available at the Hunter's Entertainment website, both in pdf and physical, as well as a pdf of the Free RPG Day Edition [with additional writing by Crespin and Xasia Villarreal], which we used.Jared - GMBen - Ashley Gleason, The Rich GirlDan - Scott Harris, The Conspiracy BoyGreg - Tex Johnson, The Haunted BoyNellie - Dr. Lilanne Okafor, The Serious Veterinarian
Having escaped the secret underground bunker with their new friend, the kids (sans bikes) need to come up with a plan for what to do next. Obviously Ryder's plan to jump the northern border and become itinerant highwaymen is GREAT, but we could at least use a Plan B. After splitting up for some side missions, the gang must break into somewhere even riskier: Ryder and Fiona's house. Will they get what they need without a confrontation with their increasingly mysterious mother? Is Duende more of an asset or a liability? What if Terry had got that knife after all, where would we be now? Content warning for discussion of memory loss, child endangerment and parental abuse, and faceless beings. Intro and outro music from "Come Play with Me" and "Anxiety" by Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com/) License: CC BY (creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/)
Twist after twist! Our young heroes have discovered a strange series of hallways under the woods, of all places, and who do they find there but Ryder and Fiona's mother! Surely she'll have an explanation for all of this and we can trust her to be up-front about everything that's going on AND react calmly to a bunch of kids breaking into the secret base. I'm also sure that we won't encounter some manner of fucking Thing. Content warning for imprisonment, child endangerment and parental abuse, tentacles, and faceless beings. Intro and outro music from "Come Play with Me" and "Anxiety" by Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com/) License: CC BY (creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/)
An email from avid listener Rick Bosacker, who gets the joke about "avid cyclists." He's on a 13 month world tour with his family, who are differently avid. Taylor gets route help from Canadian cyclists Dan and Lynette Markham in bike-unfriendly Laguna Beach, California (2:12) Bike Friendly States' ranking highlights by the League of American Bicyclists' Policy Director Ken Macleod (5:19) Intro 606 bill would require the licensing of ebikes in NYC, and make every person on a bike a target- especially those who are already targeted. "There Are No Accidents" author Jessie Singer unspools a thread (8:58) Even the Netherlands could do better for children's active transportation, which is why kids had to protest for park space in Amsterdam, say Dr. Meredith Glaser and Michela Grasso of the Urban Cycling Institute (23:38) Widening roads doesn't decrease gridlock. Why don't engineers know this? Steffen Berr, the Haarlem traffic engineer behind Build the Lanes, and Sully Israel, a traffic planner in Los Angeles, build their case (37:05) Stacey's Bike Thought (55:26)
The meddling kids of Davis, WA are hot on the trail of a mysterious winged creature that may or may not have a sinister power over memory! But will their trusty bicycles be enough to help them when they're drawn into the woods and unsure of their own minds? Also what if one of them goes over a tree root and wipes out? There's so much at stake, and things are only going to get stranger, right up to the CLIFFHANGER TWIST ENDING! Content warning for memory alteration, humanoid monsters, getting lost in the woods, and subterranean facilities. Intro and outro music from "Come Play with Me" and "Anxiety" by Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com/) License: CC BY (creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/)
This week, we're playing a holiday themed game of Kids on Bikes! Join us as we try to figure out how to play with Dr. Mary Crowell and Mike Daniel; our game may not be an ideal example of Kids on Bikes gameplay, but we sure had a whole lot of fun doing it. This is our last episode for 2024. We'll be taking time off through the holidays, as we do every year, and will be back with new episodes in January 2025. You can find Mary and her work on BlueSky (@drmaryccrowell.bsky.social), or by following the links at the bottom of the show notes. You can find Mike on BlueSky (@19hitsthedragon.bsky.social), Threads, and Instagram (@19hitsthedragon). You can also find his merch at ko-fi.com/19hitsthedragon, and his professional GM services at startplaying.games/gm/mike-d-20. We have officially left the smoldering corpse of Twitter. Thank you to everyone who followed us over there, but the platform has gotten too toxic and opportunistic for us to keep an account, even one that's mostly inactive. We're trying to get back into more regular social media use over on our BlueSky account, which you can find on our Linktree or here: https://bsky.app/profile/undercommontaste.bsky.social Our website is live! Head on over to undercommontaste.com to find links to all of our social media, streaming sites, Patreon, Itch store, and Discord. Our theme song is Massacre Anne, written and performed by Mary Crowell, and used with permission. You can find Mary's work online at marycrowell.bandcamp.com, or on Patreon at patreon.com/DrMaryCCrowell. Our logo was illustrated by David Sutherland. It's time for a good old-fashioned autumnal street fair in Davis, Washington! While Shelly works a fortune-telling side hustle and Terry tries to sniff out a case for Knife Money, the Whitehurst sisters literally stumble into a seemingly mundane incident that will lead all four of them down an unexpected path... Surely there isn't anything mysterious or sinister happening in this quiet Pacific Northwest town? Also, stay tuned 'til the end for a preview of Issues, Elliot's upcoming Masks AP! In this episode of the podcast, I speak with Drew Raney @raneydayss.Drew recently helped put on a bikepacking event in the Los Padres National Forest in California - Tour de Los Padres - which he completed on a singlespeed! Additionally, he raised $1,000 for his elementary school to give away bikes and start a comprehensive "learn to ride" program for ages 4-6 through the All Kids Bikes organization. As the school's PE teacher, he strives to instill a healthy lifestyle in his 500+ students by challenging himself through bikepacking ultra events. We chat about Drew's life as an educator as well as the importance of getting kids on bikes as a vital life skill fostering confidence and self esteem as well as giving them an activity that they can enjoy for a lifetime.I hope you enjoy this conversation. In the sprawling capital of Sorbet City, New Gelato is the headquarters for one of the most well-known frozen treat producers in the world: Dilly Dunker's Ice Cream Satis-Factory. Well known for its wide variety of frozen treats and flavors they have swept the world by storm over the five decades they've existed, but with the company's 50th anniversary coming up has come a major announcement that has shaken the world as much as it's MilkQuakes have: the retirement of Dilly Dunker. Once a spry young dairyman with dreams to make the world's most creative frozen delights, now a frail image of his former self slowly fading away on his frozen throne he seeks to pass on his success to an equally imaginative youth who can spark a whole new liveliness to his brand. In Episode 0 we meet the players and their characters who will be embarking on this ice cream adventure inspired by Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and the Wonka prequel movie. This week we have a classic episode from our archive: "The crew explores the "Kids on Bikes" sub-genre of action-adventure movies and shows that seems to be just as popular now, with shows such as Stranger Things, as it was back in its original E.T. and Goonies filled heyday of the 1980s. They discuss some of their favorite movies and shows, both new and old, to try to figure out why they loved them so much back then, and why these types of stories are still so enduring today." Happy Dog Days! This week Jessie and her husband Chad argue about which hurts worse, crashing your bike on pavement or gravel. It gets deep I tell you. Chad shares all his major bike injuries and how it got him in trouble because it was the '80s and moms were mean in the '80s. Then, of course, they get interrupted by the girls, so they weigh in on their most recent and traumatic bike crash. Jessie shares the column of the same name and stocks up on Band-Aids.
