Are you unknowingly sabotaging your own PR and media efforts without even realizing it? Listen to this week's episode of the Spirit of 608 podcast to find out. During the August hiatus that we take every year to reorganize and improve what we're doing behind the scenes with PressDope and the clients I work with one-on-one, I spoke with so many FEST founders hoping to amp up media outreach and gain visibility during this year's super important Fall retail and shopping season. And wouldn't you know it, the very same challenges -- and self-sabotaging habits -- kept coming up again and again. After a month of talking to FEST founders and hearing the same things in conversation after conversation, I knew I needed to create an episode to help you stop doing the things that are going to hold you back, no matter how loud you shout when you've got news to share or how many journalists, bloggers and content producers you reach out to with your message. In this week's solo episode of the Spirit of 608 podcast, I'm knocking out the top client challenges that will sabotage your PR and visibility every single time so you stop doing them today and start getting the recognition you want. Got it all together? Everything going 100% smoothly? Like you're on the easy breezy train to chill-ville? That's fabulous. But come back next week. Seriously, this episode of the Spirit of 608 podcast is *so not* for you. This week, I'm bringing you a show that's for those murky, messy, turbulent, hectic times. It's for those days when you're not sure if you can keep the wheels on the proverbial cart, whether you're distracted because of something heady and wonderful like getting smacked in the face by love or completely thrown by unexpected life changes, cross-country moves, health challenges, divorce or tough things in the lives of partners, parents, children and others you love. I've been through a few of those things in the four years since I started the Spirit of 608 podcast. I've coped and, I dare say, gotten a hell of a lot stronger and more resilient by creating tools that allow me to game my mindset and stay on track. Okay, not always absolutely on track, but able to get back on it quickly when I fall off. Among those tools: questions I ask myself whenever I'm having one of those super tough entrepreneurial days. I'm sharing them with you on this week in hope that they can help you the next time you're in the thick of it. Do you have your own mindset strategies? If so, I'd love to hear about them. So you want to be a guest on podcasts, but aren't sure where to start? That's a conversation I recently had with a FEST founder looking for new, creatives ways to promote her business and find her ideal audience. Just like any media outreach campaign of brand amplification initiative, it's a big question. But I'm a fan of breaking complicated, daunting tasks down into bite-sized, achievable and far less overwhelming tasks. And luckily, when it comes to booking yourself as a guest on podcasts, there's one smart place to start: the podcast one sheet. If you've thought about becoming a guest on podcasts, creating a podcast one sheet is the first thing you need to do. This must-have document lets podcast hosts know who you are and why they need to have you on an upcoming show. Good news: it's not difficult -- and you can easily design one that looks great for free. Green Dreamer: Sustainability and Regeneration From Ideas to Life
What’s a common struggle specifically for us eco and socially-driven entrepreneurs and creatives that might prevent our passion projects from thriving? Why is it important for us to support large corporations that may have a history of irresponsible practices? Journalist, media strategist, podcast producer and host of Spirit of 608 podcast, Lorraine Sanders, shares her wisdom with us in this episode. HIGHLIGHTS [4:54] Lorraine: "I really care about where things came from and the story behind them and that brings more meaning to the things in our lives." But if you wait... it's almost too late to gather authentic attention." [15:07] Lorraine on why it's important for business owners to put themselves out there. [17:44] Lorraine: "The common thread of founders that are making it happen is this thing inside of them that tells them they are going to figure it out. It's a matter of how and when, not if." [20:30] Kaméa: "How can we tell a more powerful story about sustainability?" [21:10] Lorraine: "I think we're finally waking up and seeing how major brands who have been vilified are likely to be the ones that truly shift really fundamental, systemic change globally." Fashion media coverage is a challenging area for any fashion business, but Lorraine Sanders has perfected the process after years of working as a journalist. On this episode of The Successful Fashion Designer, she discusses how to tackle fashion media and press on your own, without the use of a PR firm. She explains 4 key areas that are essential for effective media coverage that positively impacts your bottom line. It’s an episode that will surely get you thinking, and it’s one not to be missed! Outline of This Episode [0:45] Lorraine Sanders is my guest for this episode of The Successful Fashion Designer [4:45] Lorraine shares the stories behind Spirit of 608, FEST brands, and PressDope [10:09] The importance of creating opportunities for yourself in your career [24:13] Build your network of connections before asking for fashion media coverage [31:35] Answer THIS question for more successful fashion media coverage [42:04] Set your media coverage goals and maintain your connections [55:00] This is what it looks like to work with Lorraine’s company, PressDope #1 - Build a solid list of potential publications and writers One drawback to not utilizing a PR firm in fashion media is not having the credibility of the agency to back up your “ask.” Before you can ask a journalist to cover your product or brand, you first need to identify prospective publications that fit into your niche market. Start by building a solid list of those highly targeted people. Building a relationship with potential writers should be your priority long before asking them for coverage. Then, determine what content you’re going to pitch to which writers. Keep in mind that you should always be asking yourself, “What do I want to get out of this press coverage?” If you’re not clear with your fashion media publication goals, you’ll waste time and money without seeing any positive impacts on your bottom line. #2 - Help writers answer this question, “Will my readers think more highly of my publication after publishing this content?” Every writer wants to feel like they’ve “discovered” you. Publications are always looking for the “next best thing” and they want to ensure that the stories they publish are adding value to their publication. When you’re going after highly-targeted writers, if you’re a good fit for the publication, the appropriate fashion media coverage will follow. If the content you’re pitching helps a writer answer the main question of “Will my readers think more highly of my publication after publishing this content?” they’re more likely to focus on your product or brand. To hear more insights on why focusing on the right content is critical to fashion media success, don’t miss this episode of The Successful Fashion Designer. #3 - Create credibility for your brand, even if you’re not working with a PR agency Even if you choose to pursue media coverage on your own, without the use of a PR agency, you CAN create credibility for your small brand! This is achieved by focusing on a number of key areas: Professional, on-brand social media accounts Publishing on third-party platforms such as Medium Having engaged digital followers Publishing your founder’s story, creating quality original content, and demonstrating that you’re active in the industry can also show potential writers and publications that your brand is a force to be reckoned with and deserves media coverage. Don’t miss even more tips, listen now! #4 - Follow up and maintain your fashion media coverage connections It’s simply not enough to have a few great press coverage events or product launches. It’s essential to maintain your relationships with fashion media contacts in between major quarterly events or product unveilings. Continue the conversation with your hard-earned connections! Consider smaller events such as minor product launches once per month, and don’t forget to send out thank-you notes for previous media pieces! If you plan your entire fashion media coverage process months in advance, you’ll keep your schedule and your sanity in order. Lorraine Sanders is the founder of Spirit of 608 and host of the podcast. She’s also a longtime fashion journalist with a special area of interest in the intersection of fashion, entrepreneurship, sustainability and tech. She calls it FEST, and she believes it’s the combination of those things that will drive the future of the fashion industry. This episode with Lorraine touched on something that I've noticed to be such a HUGE quality of entrepreneurs that are successful. Listening to your audience. Lorraine’s interest in fashion is the main priority for her. For her it’s all about achieving her goals within that world and creating a positive impact. I think it’s important that we not lose sight of the fact that our purpose IS the point. We may love creating plans of action and figuring out strategy, but at the end of the day you're gonna be wrong a lot. You’re going to fail and feel like you didn't know what you were talking about. The fact is that most of us don’t know what we’re talking about. Or at the very least we don’t know who we’re talking to. Lorraine has found success through figuring out what her audience wants and listening to what they say. It seems simple right? But our egos or doubts get in the way. Once we realize that change and failure is inevitable, listening to our audience suddenly doesn't seem like such a crazy idea. In fact, it’s one of the best ideas you can have.
