The Stories – “The first dress that I ever draped was the dress that got on the cover of Women's Wear Daily, for my first collection. That was life changing. It was a dress that Zoe Saldaña wore. It was also the version of a dress that I made for Oprah for her magazine cover. The dress that Michelle Obama wore to a White House Correspondents' Dinner changed my trajectory.”The Backstory – "It was at Bill Blass that I did my Phd; my Masters." “I grew up in a household where we could talk about fashion, love, music, dance – everything – at the dinner table. Nothing was off limits. And when I came to America, especially in the fashion world, when I would ask questions, people would say, ‘No, I don't want to talk about that.' I was shocked.” “You have to figure out what is happening around you, and survive it. In order for me to survive and really live my dreams, I had to be my own cheerleader. I allowed myself to feel things, but then also to move on.”Wisdom Rains –  “'Too much' and 'too little' are words that have been hurled at me ever since I was little and I've learned to brush it off.” “I've learned that you can't please everyone, all of the time.” “If you're living your life as part of a marginalized group, you're in constant fight-or-flight mode and you don't even realize it. Then that gets amplified with what's happening politically, culturally.” “In watching my mother I realized that elegance isn't a posture; it's a practice.” “Early on, I learned that I was never going to get any validation, I was seen as a ‘cautionary tale'; and what that did was, it freed me from ever needing any.” “I think it's very important for all of us to live in the world exploring what we want to do in life, and having that encompass joy, purpose, and impact.”On Inspo – “My mother is my blueprint for strength.”On Writing His Memoir – “Editing down was really challenging. I made sure that it was done with grace. This is not a salacious, take-down book. That's not my being. I wanted to tell a story. While writing, it was really challenging to relive things. But it was also cathartic.”On The Fashion Industry – "What I love about the fashion industry, which often doesn't get shared, is the camaraderie that we have. There's a genuine sense of support and understanding amongst all the creatives and entrepreneurs. It's not easy. It might look fabulous and wonderful, but the hard work is real hard work. I always say five percent of it is glamour, the rest is sheer hard work.”On Anna Wintour – “I know she can be polarizing, but the industry is better because of her.”On Cynthia Rowley – “She had an independent brand and she worked really hard. What I really loved about her, and I'm inspired by her constantly, is that even in the hardest times she was always joyful. She was always optimistic.”What Else – “Towards that time, we started the foundation and that's where I would say everything shifted for me. We started with twelve girls, and we've gone to more than three hundred children. These are streetworker's children; inmates' children; these are children who have no access to education and a livelihood”Obsixed – A collection of Prabal's current lifestyle obsessions.Discover more + Shop The Podcast:parabalgurung.comWalk Like A Girl by Prabal GurungPrabal Gurung Polka Dot Brocade Flounce MinidressProem Eau de Parfum by U BeautyTracie Martyn SpaPrabal Gurung: Style and Beauty with a BitePride and Prejudice by Jane AustenDiscover the episode and more on storyandrain.comfollow @storyandraintalks and @storyandrain on Instagram follow @storyandraintalks and @storyandrain on Threadsall about the host

For over 100 years Women's Wear Daily has been the bible for the fashion industry, and its archives include numerous hidden contributions of Black designers and models. Now that history has been gathered in a stunning new book, BLACK IN FASHION, by Tonya Blazio-Licorish and Tara Donaldson, showcasing the indelible influence of Black culture on a global scale. On Episode 5 of Rodeo Drive-The Podcast, host Lyn Winter spoke with the authors about the book and the revelations they found in the WWD archives. “Fashion has a flawed public history because it hasn't included all the voices,” says Blazio-Licorish, also a visual culture historian and editor with PMC Media Archives. “We were always there, and not just there in marginal roles, but in important roles, in roles that were shaping fashion,” adds Donaldson, most recently WWD's executive editor and Head of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at Fairchild Media. Dating back as early as the Harlem Renaissance, the Black community was making its mark on clothing and style, from Black dolls for young Black children, early fashion shows, business associations, and fashionable scenes like at The Cotton Club. The authors single out early “influencers” such as Josephine Baker, who even had a hosiery color named in her honor, the dancer Katherine Dunham, who was all the rage in 1940s France, and then the Black models, including Pat Cleveland and Bethann Hardison, who shook up global fashion at the famed 1973 Battle of Versailles. The late André Leon Talley recalled this momentous event in conversation with the authors before his passing. “You could almost just reach out and touch the energy they gave in the air. It was like quiet thunder, and because everyone saw that and felt that at the battle, French designers – Givenchy, Yves Saint Laurent – they started wanting black models.”Black fashion has been intertwined with politics – and BLACK IN FASHION explores how clothing reflected the moment:“During civil rights, that time was really about respectability politics,” explains Donaldson. “It was coming in your Sunday best, to assert dignity. It was a kind of a polite request for human rights. By the time you get to the 70s, the mood changes, the look changes…then the Black Panther movement, it's more powerful, it's more assertive…You have the leather jackets, you have the turtlenecks, you have the berets. And then we see that evolve even into the 2020s. And there's the branded T-shirts, Black Lives Matter.”Finally, the story is still unfolding. Black designers are still not getting the high level industry jobs they deserve, argue Blazio-Licorish and Donaldson, and are even ambivalent about being labeled as Black. So Blazio-Licorish says they finished on a question: “We purposefully left the conversation open to, who's next, who's now, and what do they have to say about where fashion is going to go?”Season 5 of Rodeo Drive – The Podcast is presented by the Rodeo Drive Committee with the support of The Hayman Family, Two Rodeo Drive, Beverly Wilshire, A Four Seasons Hotel, and the Beverly Hills Conference & Visitors Bureau.Season 5 Credits:Executive Producer and Host: Lyn WinterOn behalf of the Rodeo Drive Committee: Kay Monica RoseScriptwriter and Editorial Advisor: Frances AndertonEditor and Videographer: Hans FjellestadTheme music by Brian BanksProduction Assistant: Isabelle Alfonso.Listen, subscribe, rate and review on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts.Join us on Instagram @rodeodrive Hosted on Acast. Born in New Haven, CT, Heidi Lender began her career reporting on the fashion universe for national magazines, writing features and styling photo shoots throughout her twenties. With a BA in apparel and textiles from Cornell University, she covered style and travel from New York to Paris, where she served as Fashion Director and Associate Bureau Chief of Women's Wear Daily and W Magazine. After Paris she went to India, where she lived part-time while studying yoga for the next eight years. In 2007, she opened and taught at a yoga studio in San Francisco, and two years later she discovered her creative self in photography. Self-taught, she began by creating self-portraits and realised a meaningful way to make sense of the world and her place in it. Her images are often based in self-inquiry that stem from personal experiences, relationships and/or investigate identity. She is represented by galleries in the U.S. and Uruguay and has exhibited internationally. Heidi is a founding member of the online collective Six Shooters, has twice been a Critical Mass finalist, received recognition from the likes of the Pollux Awards and the Julia Margaret Cameron Award. Her work has been featured in PDN and Rangefinder magazines and in online photo blogs including CNN, NPR and the New Yorker's Photo Booth. Editorial credits include WSJ Magazine, Disegno Journal and Grey Magazine. In 2014, Kehrer Verlag published the photography book “Grassland” under Lender's pseudonym, H. Lee. She currently resides on an 80-acre ranch in Pueblo Garzón, Uruguay, where she has founded CAMPO, a nonprofit creative institute supporting international artists (www.campogarzon.org).In this episode and her discussion with Anne, Heidi recounts her impulsive decision to leave her burgeoning career as a fashion director in Paris at the young age of 26. A pivotal moment in Heidi's personal story, she tells Anne, is her discovery of Garzón, Uruguay. During an impromptu trip to South America, she stumbled upon her dream home in the quaint village, which became the birthplace of CAMPO. Heidi describes to Anne how her passion for photography flourishes in this picturesque setting, where the art of self-portraiture becomes a therapeutic outlet and a means of self-expression. The episode highlights how photography, combined with mindfulness practices, has been a crucial part of Heidi's healing journey.Heidi then goes deeper into the founding and growth of CAMPO, which has evolved into a sanctuary for artists, chefs and writers from around the world. Heidi articulates her vision of creating transformative experiences for both residents and attendees, fostering a sense of community through artistic collaboration. The festival, now a three-day event with a month-long residency program, is using the theme "unsettled" this year. The theme explores migration and movement, thus reflecting Heidi's own journey of continuous reinvention.***Are you curious about Anne's Coaching & Consulting:Feeling lost or burnt out? After Paris she went to India, where she lived part-time studying yoga for the next 8 years. In 2007, she opened and taught at a yoga studio in San Francisco, and two years later, she discovered her creative self in photography. Self-taught, she began by creating self-portraits and realized a meaningful way to make sense of the world and her place in it. Her images are often based in self-inquiry that stem from personal experiences, relationships, and/or investigate identity. She is represented by galleries in the U.S. and Uruguay and has exhibited internationally. Heidi is a founding member of the online collective Six Shooters, has twice been a Critical Mass finalist, received recognition from the likes of WPGA Pollux Awards and the Julia Margaret Cameron Award. Her work has been featured in PDN and Rangefinder magazines and in online photo blogs including CNN, NPR and the New Yorker's Photo Booth. Editorial credits include WSJ Magazine, Disegno and Grey Magazine. In 2014, Kehrer Verlag published the photography book Grassland under Lender's pseudonym H. Lee. She currently resides on an 80-acre ranch in Pueblo Garzon, Uruguay, where she has founded CAMPO, a nonprofit creative institute, supporting international artists, www.campogarzon.org.In this episode, Heidi recounts her impulsive decision to leave her burgeoning career as a fashion director in Paris at the young age of 26. Her tale is marked by personal challenges, including a divorce and the emotional rollercoaster of IVF, which she bravely shares with Anne. Heidi's journey of self-discovery and resilience is punctuated by her immersion into the world of yoga, where she trained under the renowned Pattabhi Jois, finding solace and a renewed sense of purpose.Prompted by Heidi expressing the realizations she had while shopping in Goa, Anne shares a similar experience from her recent trip to Greece, emphasizing the significance of unique, locally crafted fashion. Anne also speaks candidly about her battle with rheumatoid arthritis and how yoga has been instrumental in her physical and emotional well-being, noting that movement does indeed help with pain, despite seeming counterintuitive. The episode takes a reflective turn as Heidi shares the trials and tribulations she faced during her attempts at conceiving through IVF, eventually leading her to embrace a different life path with acceptance and grace.A pivotal moment in Heidi's personal story, she tells Anne, is her discovery of Garzon, Uruguay. The episode highlights how photography, combined with mindfulness practices, has been a crucial part of Heidi's healing journey.Heidi goes deeper into the founding and growth of CAMPO, which has evolved into a sanctuary for artists, chefs, and writers from around the world. Heidi articulates her vision of creating transformative experiences for both residents and attendees, fostering a sense of community through artistic collaboration. The festival, now a three-day event with a month-long residency program, is using the theme "unsettled" this year. The theme explores migration and movement, thus reflecting Heidi's own journey of continuous reinvention. The episode concludes with a heartfelt discussion between Heidi and Anne on the value of solitude, introspection, and the interconnectedness of creative pursuits and personal growth. Heidi shares important moments of reconnection with her past and influential figures, weaving a narrative of the importance of serendipity and openness to new perspectives. Through her story, Heidi exemplifies resilience, creativity, and the transformative power of embracing life's unpredictable turns. An intimate and heartwarming interview with a talented artist who has a plethora of global experience. Out of the Clouds website: https://outoftheclouds.com/Out of the Clouds on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/_outofthecloudsThe Mettā View website: https://avm.consulting/metta-viewAnne on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/annvi/Anne on Threads: https://www.threads.net/@annviAnne on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/anne-v-muhlethaler/Heidi's website: https://heidilender.com/Camp Garzon: https://campogarzon.org/Heidi on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/heidilenderHeidi on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/heidi-lender/Argentinian chef Francis Mallmann: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Francis_MallmannRestaurant Garzon: https://www.restaurantegarzon.com/W magazine: https://www.wmagazine.com/Women's wear daily: https://wwd.com/Us Magazine: https://www.usmagazine.com/Ashtanga Yoga: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ashtanga_vinyasa_yogaJohn Berlinsky: https://www.mettayogastudio.com/john-berlinskyK. Soon after, she noticed she preferred reading Women's Wear Daily over the Financial Times and thought she might want to work somewhere in the intersection of business and fashion. Four years into her time in banking, she took a pay cut and pivoted to fashion, first working at Italian men's luxury goods house Tod's, and then at J.Crew, where she worked closely with Jenna Lyons and helped launch new categories like its iconic jewelry line. After several years and massive growth at J.Crew, Kim wanted a change and a new challenge. So she joined Warby Parker in 2016, when the brand owned only 12 stores. In the years since, she's guided Warby Parker through product development, merchandising, planning and strategy, and everything in between. Well, we started our Women in Power series for Women's History Month with a legendary editor-in-chief and we're going to end the series with one, too. Today on the show I have Kate Betts, former editor-in-chief at Harper's Bazaar, a longtime colleague of Anna Wintour's at Vogue, and the author of one of my all-time favorite memoirs, My Paris Dream: An Education in Style, Slang, and Seduction in the Great City on the Seine. In addition to My Paris Dream, Kate also wrote the book Everyday Icon: Michelle Obama and the Power of Style and reveals in our chat today that she's working on a third book, which I will devour when it comes out. I first interacted with Kate when I interviewed her for an oral history piece I did in Vanity Fair on Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy's wedding dress back in 2021—I love that piece, and I'll link it below. Of course, I'd known of Kate and her work for 25 years prior to us speaking three years ago. After graduating from Princeton, one of Kate's first big roles was at Fairchild Publications' European office in Paris, a period of her career that she calls essential to her development as a fashion journalist. Kate was a features writer for the Paris bureau of Fairchild, overseeing fashion coverage for Women's Wear Daily, W, and M magazines. In this role, she also helped launch W Europe. After two years, she became the bureau chief, and in 1991, she left Paris and Fairchild for New York City and Conde Nast, where she took over as fashion news director at Vogue. She created Vogue's Index section, and in 1999 took over as editor-in-chief at Harper's Bazaar. In a testament to Kate's ferocity, three days after starting at Bazaar, she gave birth to her first child. Kate was a new mom, and the youngest editor ever at America's oldest fashion magazine. Our Women in Power series for Women's History Month rolls on—today's guest is Lesley Jane Seymour, who has been editor-in-chief of four different magazines, something that is just not done. That is legends only stuff right there. I feel extra connected to her because she was editor-in-chief of Marie Claire, the magazine where I now work, from 2001 to 2006. She was also editor-in-chief of Redbook, YM, and More, and before taking on her role as an editor-in-chief worked at Women's Wear Daily, Vogue, and Glamour, so she has certainly cut a wide swath in this industry. Lesley was another icon of magazines who was very much present for what I call the golden age of magazines, and as we'll talk about in the show, I think a cornerstone of her story is resilience. In 2016, Meredith Corporation, which owned More, her last editor-in-chief role, announced it was closing the magazine. Lesley went back to school, receiving a master's degree in sustainability from Columbia. In 2018, she founded Covey Club, an online community for professional women, specifically over 40, that resembled More's demographic. Lesley calls Covey Club “a meeting place for lifelong learners,” and it continues to thrive today. Lesley maintains it's never too late to be all that you want to be, and, in addition to all of her work with Covey Club, she hosts the podcast “Reinvent Yourself”; she has really taken what others might wallow in and has turned this into purpose-driven work. She is also the author of two books, On the Edge: 100 Years of Vogue and I Wish My Parents Understood, and she has appeared on every major television news show you can think of from Today to Good Morning America to Hardball to MSNBC and CNN. I can't wait for you to get to know her. Continuing our Women in Power series for Women's History Month, today I'm bringing you the absolutely fabulous Danielle Pergament, whose work as a contributing editor at Allure, as well as with The New York Times, Goop, Conde Nast Traveler, Women's Wear Daily, and my new obsession, Air Mail, have been some of the best celebrity profiles and travel writing you'll read. Here is but a sampling of the A-list women Danielle has interviewed and profiled: every Jennifer possible, first of all—Jennifer Lopez! Jennifer Garner! Jennifer Aniston!—Victoria Beckham, Charlize Theron, Kim Kardashian, Alicia Keys, Sharon Stone, Hillary Duff. I could go on and on. Halsey said, when being interviewed by Danielle, “This wasn't an interview. This was a therapy session.” There is something very disarming and comfortable about Danielle, particularly her unbelievable ability to self-deprecate, which is a quality I absolutely love in people. As someone who has interviewed celebrities myself, though nowhere near as many or as well as Danielle has done it, I have to tell you that it is a art form, especially when you get to the A-listers among A-listers like Jennifer Aniston or Kim Kardashian, people who have been interviewed a bazillion times. It is difficult to get nuggets out of them that haven't been told before—but Danielle can do it. Wait until she tells you how she was able to help Jennifer Aniston feel comfortable enough to open up about not having children, or with Charlize Theron, where she talked about aging in Hollywood. Danielle is a master at the celebrity profile; she is also a gifted travel writer and beauty writer. In the past, Danielle has served as Allure's executive editor and editor at large, as well as editor-in-chief at Goop, and she has also been published at Marie Claire, which you know I have to shout out every time a guest has worked for my wonderful employer. I knew I appreciated Danielle as a writer; after this time with her, I couldn't get enough of her as a person.   “Jennifer Aniston Has Nothing to Hide”   “Victoria Beckham Is in Control”   “The Griselda Creator's Miami”   “The History of the Bob Haircut and Why It's Trending Now”   “Charlize Theron Didn't Get a Facelift, Thanks for Asking”   “Jennifer Garner: I'm Not Good at Being Fake”   My absolute obsession Air Mail, where Danielle writes frequently

Latino Americans' purchasing power hit $3.4 trillion in 2021, according to a report from the Latino Donor Collaborative, and is expected to account for over one-third of growth in apparel spending in the next five years, according to the 2021 Claritas Hispanic Market Report. With Nielsen noting that women are largely in control of household spending in this demographic, designers and retailers are working to make their sectors more inclusive to Latinas as consumers. But it's a tough hill to climb given they remain underrepresented in leadership roles in both fashion and retail, with Women's Wear Daily calling out our guest, Sandra Campos, as one of the only Latina CEOs in global fashion during her tenure at Diane von Furstenberg. On this episode, we hear from Sonia Smith Kang, an AfroLatina mother who left a career in nursing to start the multicultural children's clothing line, Mixed Up Clothing, after struggling to find representative clothing for her own kids. Then, Carla speaks to Sandra Campos, a leading Latina voice in retail and the co-founder of Latina Disrupters, an annual networking event for entrepreneurs. They discuss the need to empower Latinas working in retail and fashion so they can take on leadership positions in the space, as well as how US retailers can better serve the rapidly growing Latino population.https://www.morganstanley.com/what-we-do/inclusive-innovation-and-opportunity Disclaimer textThe guest speakers are neither employees nor affiliated with Morgan Stanley & Co. Through their investment firm, Imaginary Ventures, Nick Brown and Natalie Massenet have proven time and again the importance of their role in the consumer ecosystem. They understand better than most how difficult it can be to start a business from scratch, so they use their knowledge and resources to prop up promising young startups and get them moving in the right direction. And the status they've achieved as respected and influential stewards of growing businesses is well deserved. In her early career Natalie honed her skills predicting consumer trends as a journalist for Women's Wear Daily, eventually founding the massively successful high-fashion e-commerce platform NET-A-PORTER. Nick built his portfolio through a few really wise bets on some exciting up-and-coming brands like Warby Parker and Reformation, quickly garnering a reputation as the go-to-guy for fledgling founders. As self-described "generalist investors" Nick and Natalie's interest in potential partners is governed less by a specific genre—like fashion or beauty—and more by the character traits of the business leaders themselves, stating that founders need to have a well-balanced and open-minded approach to growing their business if they ever hope to be successful. There's a lot of really great insight here about the world of investment and retail in general, especially if you're an early-stage founder looking to make your mark. When we talk about career changes, we don't normally talk about someone going from a media role to becoming the founder of a beauty brand, but that's exactly what Sophia Chabbott did as the founder of Testament Beauty, a skincare line known for being the Mediterranean diet for your face. Testament Beauty is centered around the simple and stunningly beautiful garden-grown ingredients core to her family heritage and traditions. How did she come up with her tagline of being the Mediterranean diet for your face? She was tired of opening her medicine cabinet and being bombarded with messaging like prevent, correct, and repair.  Before founding Testament Beauty, Sophia was a journalist, and we worked together during her years at Women's Wear Daily and Glamour. I remember when Sophia told me she would launch a brand over dinner. Six years in the making, most notably because of her imposter syndrome, Sophia finally got out of her way and made her dream possible at the pivotal age of 40.  "I was telling my brother somebody should do a skincare line that is, you know, sort of like how we grew up, like the Mediterranean diet but for your face, and he was like, why not you?" In this episode, Sophia shares her story and experience rising in her career to become a top-tier journalist and then saying goodbye to her media life to embrace the hustle life of being a start-up founder. She shares her fears, obstacles, and, ultimately, what made her move past her self-doubt to create something uniquely her own.

When I first introduced you to Sally Mueller in the Spring of 2022, her company, Womaness was just ramping up. But, in addition to changing the conversation around menopause, according to a recent article in Women's Wear Daily, Womaness Founders Sally Mueller and Michelle Jacobs set out to start their brand's third fundraise a bit differently. They're working with three LA based investors—Carol Cheng, Annie Belanger and Ellen Chen to form a special purpose vehicle. By doing this, women of all ages and investor experience were able to come to the cap table with checks ranging from $5,000 to $50,000—ultimately raising Womaness $1MM—and the brand is still raising. Womaness aims to create a community full of inspired women who embrace menopositvity. This is a story I love because it is one rooted in what I believe is a brand's greatest asset—their community. Ben Brantley was the chief theater critic of The New York Times for more than 20 years. He wrote more than 2,500 reviews over 27 years beginning in 1993.During Adam's first act as a Broadway Producer, Ben and Adam “passed each other in the theater aisle” so to speak. Ben reviewed some of Adam's biggest hits and being consummate professionals, they would not engage while reviews were underway. But in between shows, and now that Ben has taken his last bow as a theater critic having retired to the bucolic Hudson River Valley, Adam and Ben have a proper sit down to discuss all things Broadway and beyond. One you cannot miss! Before joining The Times, Ben was a staff writer for the New Yorker and Vanity Fair. He reviewed fashion for Women's Wear Daily, where he was the Paris bureau chief and European editor; and reviewed movies for Elle magazine. He grew up in Winston-Salem, N.C., and graduated from Swarthmore College. He is the editor of two books of New York Times theater reviews and a recipient of the George Jean Nathan Award for theater criticism. Enjoy this departure from the chaos of America's political storm as you sink into a charming conversation about art, life, and well, even some politics actually-between 2 stars who have seen, experienced and contributed so much to art and to our culture. Ladies and gentlemen, Ben Brantley! *applause as curtain rises Stay Dirty, Stay Moderate, and Stay Safe.
