Graciela Domínguez fue nombrada gobernadora interina de Sinaloa, luego del fugaz regreso de Rubén Rocha. Plan Dulce Host Michelle E.  Zuñiga, PhD, AICP (she/her/hers) interviews Pamela Agustin-Anguiano (she/her), Coalition Director of Eastside LEADS, an intergenerational coalition of youth, adult, and 8 community-based organizations working together to preserve and develop deeply affordable housing, expand tenant protections, and stop the displacement of low-income residents in East Los Angeles.Pamela was born and raised in Mexicali, Baja California, Mexico, a city located along the California U.S.- Mexico border. At the age of 12 she moved to the Coachella Valley, California where she was struck by the economic and infrastructure divides in the region that were evident during her first drive between Mecca to her step-father's job at a Country Club in Indian Wells. The beautifully manicured green lawns, larger roads, private gated communities, and smiling golf enthusiasts in their golf carts were a stark difference to the unpaved roads, dilapidated housing, and farmworkers toiling in the desert heat close to Mecca. At the time she wondered how could this be a reality in one of the most wealthy nations of the world? How can this be a reality for the families that she saw risk their lives crossing the All American Canal or the desert heat back in Mexicali?This question led her to pursue a double major in International Affairs and Latin American Studies at UC Riverside. But the answers to this question, and more importantly, the impact that local residents can have in shaping solutions to inequality were evident once she began working and organizing in East L.A., a place where residents fight together with support of many local organizations to achieve a more just and equitable L.A.Today, Pamela serves as the Coalition Director of Eastside LEADS, an intergenerational coalition of youth, adult, and 8 community-based organizations working together to preserve and develop deeply affordable housing, expand tenant protections, and stop the displacement of low-income residents in East Los Angeles. She directs strategic planning, campaign development, and fundraising for the Coalition. Under her leadership Eastside LEADS has won important tenant protection and housing policies in L.A. County and helped establish regional partnerships that fight for housing as a human right. ¡Celebramos los tres años de Mexapedia con un Live histórico de aniversario! En este reencuentro lleno de anécdotas, debates crudos y anuncios clave para el metal nacional, el fundador Ángel se reúne con grandes creadores de la escena mexicana como Yusel (Heavy Mextal), Johnny Metal, JC (Goth Productions / Ghost Productions), Coba (Metalmemes) y Tony (Rockardiaco). A lo largo de la transmisión, la plática rememora los inicios de Mexapedia como una enciclopedia que nació con el respaldo de Aztec Metal y que ha ido evolucionando constantemente. La conversación escala rápidamente a un debate sin filtros sobre el estado actual del metal en México, cuestionando si realmente existe una escena o una industria organizada. Los invitados proponen dejar atrás los egos y transformar el concepto de "escena" por el de "Unión Metalera" para avanzar en conjunto y consolidar un verdadero mercado nacional. Uno de los momentos más intensos del Live gira en torno a la cultura de la gratuidad, la falta de profesionalización y el polémico debate sobre el pago nulo a las bandas. Los panelistas coinciden en que gran parte de la escena se ve afectada por una mentalidad arraigada que busca obtener todo de forma gratuita, lo que desincentiva la inversión en equipos, profesionalización y producción de calidad. También se discute con dureza la realidad de las bandas que aceptan tocar sin cobrar o que incluso pagan por tocar en busca de exposición. La conclusión del panel es contundente: para exigir una retribución, las agrupaciones deben comportarse como verdaderos profesionales, contar con herramientas básicas como un presskit y comprometerse activamente con la promoción de su propio material. Para hacer frente a estas dificultades operativas del metal nacional, Ángel presenta la evolución de Mexapedia mediante un ecosistema de herramientas tecnológicas gratuitas diseñadas para facilitar el trabajo de las bandas. Entre ellas destaca Mexatickets, un sistema de boletera digital donde todo el dinero de las entradas llega de manera directa a la cuenta de transferencia de las bandas, cobrando una comisión mínima de solo diez pesos por boleto destinada únicamente al mantenimiento de la plataforma. Asimismo, se presenta la Mexatienda, una tienda en línea completamente libre de comisiones que permite a las agrupaciones vender su mercancía oficial y conservar el cien por ciento de sus ganancias. En el plano de los lanzamientos, se anuncia el estreno de la segunda edición de la revista digital enfocada en el Power Metal, acompañada por el lanzamiento de su primer compilado físico y digital de dicho género con la participación de diecisiete bandas. Para cerrar con broche de oro, se detallan los planes del Mexafest, un festival en formato "Roadshow" que se llevará a cabo durante los próximos meses con fechas confirmadas en Guadalajara, Puebla, Mexicali y Tuxtla Gutiérrez, enfocado en impulsar a los proyectos locales bajo condiciones operativas adecuadas. Este Live representa el verdadero valor de hacer comunidad, demostrando que al unir fuerzas se genera la sinergia indispensable para impulsar la música más feroz de México. Casey Walker speaks to Emily Everett about his story “Islands,” which appears in The Common's fall issue. Set at an old lake house rife with unresolved family tensions, the story explores the dynamics between three orphaned brothers, and between the narrator and his pregnant wife. Casey discusses how the piece evolved over more than a decade, and how he always hopes a story will take on a life of its own during the writing process. Also discussed is his forthcoming novel Mexicali, set in the US-Mexico borderlands during the first half of the 20th century. Casey Walker's new novel Mexicali is forthcoming from Knopf in 2027. He is also the author of the novel Last Days in Shanghai and has published fiction and essays in The Common, Ninth Letter, The Believer, The New York Times, and El País, among others.
