In episode 234 of The Just Checking In Podcast we checked in with Jonathan Lee. Jon is currently a Creative Director at an advertising agency and the Founder of mental health initiative The Life Jacket (TLJ). After Jon's friend Alex took his own life in 2023, he wanted to create a new suicide prevention tool that would have intervened in the period building up to Alex's death. Jon tragically discovered Alex had been researching suicide methods online for a year prior to when he did it. Jon then created an initiative in partnership with R;pple Suicide Prevention and The Life Jacket was born. The Life Jacket aims to give people the skills, knowledge and confidence to take action and turn someone else's life around. In the UK alone, there are over 1.2 million internet searches every month on how one can take their own life. TLJ work with organisations, alliances, universities and schools to reduce the number of lives lost to suicide through collective, preventative action. To launch the platform, 17 life jackets were placed in locations around the UK, with each jacket dedicated to someone who has tragically lost their life to suicide. In this episode, we discuss the journey of The Life Jacket, what Jon wants to achieve with it, the bubble which exists in some mental health spaces and how Jon wants to break out of that. We also discuss his plans for the future including workshops and international Life Jacket chapters across the world. For Jon's mental health, we discuss the impact that Alex's suicide had on him and his mental health, why he wanted to take that grief and turn it into TLJ and how we can positively intervene and spot the signs of a man or anyone when they are suicidal. Forensic data and pattern recognition tell us a lot, but how does it help in the fight against domestic violence? And how are some data points more important than others? Dr Lyndal Bugeja is the research lead of the Violence Investigation Research and Training Unit at Monash University, and is an expert in interpreting forensic data sets to gain an understanding as to how people are dying/being killed and what can be done to stop it. Lyndal sits down with host Kathryn Fox to explain how a tragic case in the late 90s proved one of her hypothesis false, but also changed the way she went about research and data recognition. Rowling所说:“Family is a life jacket in the stormy sea of life.”家庭就像是我们在波涛汹涌的人生海洋中的救生衣。今天我们就来学习这句话。Quote to learn for todayFamily is a life jacket in the stormy sea of life.–J.K. ( Riverton, WY) - Wyoming Game and Fish Game Warden Jon Desonier and Rene Schell join "Jerrad and Charene" the County 10 Morning Show. Jon discusses multiple important reminders on boating safety, as well as an in depth life jacket discussion with both Rene and Jon. Another interesting portion of this interview is the tests that Game and Fish can run someone through to see if they are operating a boat under the influence. These are the boating version of what an officer would run you through if you were thought to be operating a vehicle under the influence. Check out the great informative interview below. Recreating on the water is a great way to cool off and enjoy summer, but being safe and informed is the best way to ensure everyone is safe. Aquatic Invasive Species is also an important part of boating safety, having your AIS decal is required. "There are several regulations in place to protect Wyoming's resources. All boaters should be aware of these regulations. Any watercraft transported into Wyoming from March 1 through November 30 must undergo a mandatory inspection by an authorized inspector prior to launching." Boating Education Courses
Years ago, when I was a wee little child, I went fishing with my grandad and my brother in Arkansas in the middle of winter with snow on the ground. We were fishing in a spot that was 30 to 50 feet deep. At one point, I cranked in the anchor, grab my rod to sit down, expressing the exhaustion of hand cranking the anchor some 50 ft. When I sat down, my chair had spun without me knowing, so my flop into the seat ended up with me doing a backflip into the ice-cold water.Fortunately, I had a life-jacket on so I bobbed up to the surface. But, my fishing pole was not so lucky, it sunk to the bottom of the lake. After my grandad and brother stopped laughing, they managed to pull me back into the boat. My point in sharing this with you is thisIf someone was drowning, would you throw them a fishing pole or a life vest?I hope the answer of a life vest is obvious to you.The scriptures this morning help to unravel something that I think our church and our society have gotten confused. We know and are quick to point out that the two greatest commandments are to love God and love our neighbor. This is absolutely true. However, the only way we can truly love our neighbor is to do so in a way that points them to Jesus. In other words, to throw them a life-jacket instead of a fishing pole. A fishing pole is helpful if you are in the boat ready to catch fish or even becoming a fisher of men, but if you are drowning is a sea of sin there is only one thing you need, a life-jacket, and that is Jesus.Jesus who rescues us from our sin, Jesus who gives us new life, Jesus who heals our sicknesses, and who frees us from the deceit of the enemy of our soul. It is Jesus who saves, who redeems, who heals, and who forgives. Now that is a rescue that all of humanity desperately needs.Support the show
A life jacket is a life saving device! We will say it again…a life jacket is a life saving device! But, do you know what to look for when purchasing a life jacket? Do you know how to check if it fits your child correctly? Rukmini Halliwell is here to teach you everything you need to know! You'll find Rukmini Halliwell on any given weekend hiking along the Bruce Trail with her toddler, dog and husband in tow, hunting for mushrooms and sharing her biodiversity knowledge on the ‘gram. With a deep connection to her heritage and a passion to be on trail, she is also advocating for diversity and inclusion in the outdoors. After having her first child, Ruk began focusing on how to break cultural barriers that prevent BIPOC from entering outdoor spaces. Ruk is our Inclusion Manager at Kids Who Explore and we love having her on our team. Ruk was a competitive swimmer for the majority of her life. She trained as a lifeguard, and practiced as a lifeguard, which got her passionate about the topic of water safety!! Difference Between Life Jacket and Personal Floatation Device: A life jacket is a piece of safety equipment. A safety regulation life jacket has very specific check boxes to be “coast-guard approved” Personal floatation devices (PFD) can be any floatation outside of your body. Lots of items can be listed under PFD There are different regulations for what you can call a life jacket or PFD in Canada versus States, and possibly other places Please refer back to Episode 57 for Water Safety Tips too! https://kidswhoexplore.com/podcasts/ep-57-water-safety-with-kaylee-kennedy/ Water Safety Tips: Life jackets are meant to be life saving devices, but they are not meant to be a replacement of parental supervision, or to teach people to swim Do not lose sight of your child (or anyone you're attending to) Open water requires a life jacket! [Model appropriate behaviour for your children by wearing a life jacket yourself] What to Look for in a Life Jacket: Colour: Red or orange (needs to show up bright in the water) *Tip to correct ones that are bad colours/not visible in the water…use fluorescent duct tape* Crotch Strap: Needs to be done up, so the life jacket doesn't float up over the child in the water Fit: Multiple buckles, and proper size/fit Material: Made out of foam (still works if there is a little rip or tear) Head Rest: Flips them onto their back, so it keeps their airway open Neck Pull: Allows you to grab them in the water and rescue them NOT Inflatable: Do not use an inflatable life jacket! It's not reliable Think of a life jacket as a yearly investment! Buy the red one that fits at that exact time!! There's a few questions I've asked in the podcast and I'm doing a global wellness check on the listeners. How are you doing on today? Are you keeping your head above water? If you know the Lord Jesus, are you sharing with others what He has done for you? I'm encouraging people that know God to let down their nets and help catch those that are sinking. This world is unsafe but there's safety in numbers. We're only safe with the help of Jesus. If He be for us, He's more than this entire whole world against us. Don't sink! You can make it. Accept the plan of Salvation today and make Jesus your Life Jacket. Thanks for tuning in. Tune in every week for an inspirational message. May God bless and keep you is my prayer --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/shelly-lockett/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/shelly-lockett/support

Award-winning documentary filmmaker Faten AlFaraj joins us to share about the making of documentaries and her new feature-length film Life Jacket, telling the stories of refugees on the island of Lesvos, Greece. Learn how Faten's motto - making a difference through media - guides her work and her life. "Documentaries are more authentic. They tell the story the way it is without polishing it." "Documentaries are there to make a change, to encourage people to see the truth, to see it the way it is, and make a change around that certain issue. I love that authenticity." "Sometimes it's not a huge statement, but in a small way where you highlight the truth, highlight what's wrong, bring a different perspective to things... Just to have this conversation is part of making a difference." Five steps of making a documentary: development, pre-production, production, post-production, distribution "It gets more personal when they start sharing their story, when they start getting vulnerable in front of you and entrusting you with their story. That's when you feel that you need to cherish that sensitive information and really handle it with care." Life Jacket is a new feature-length film about refugees on the island of Lesvos, Greece. "We need to hear their side of their story. I felt like it's about time to shed a light on this issue and just listen to them."
