On board today is Louise Howard, a Sydney-based executive who I met through the FIRE community. Louise is an incredibly talented, dedicated and successful person who has held executive roles in infrastructure projects in the public sector, as well as management and consulting in the private sector. She recently decided to take a break from her government job and launched her own advisory business called Louise Howard Advisory, where she advises and speaks publicly, all over the world on topics such as infrastructure, development, career mentoring and leadership. Louise is from a big Italian family and learned some solid financial lessons from her parents who provided a wonderful start for her and her siblings. Louise lives in a high cost of living area in Sydney, but is a mean negotiator when it comes to her salary, and is passionate about pay equality for women in the workforce. Louise is 5 years from her FAT Fire goal, has made some very smart money and investing decisions along the way and it was awesome to catch up with her again!

Today marks two years since the re-taking of Afghanistan by the Taliban. We speak to Afghanistan's youngest female mayor, Zarifa Ghafari, who was elected mayor of the conservative central city of Maidan Shahr in 2018, aged 23, and survived three assassination attempts while still living in the country. During one of these attempts, her father was killed. Following the Taliban's return to power in August 2021, she fled Afghanistan along with her husband, mother and siblings. But she still receives daily death threats from the Taliban despite fleeing to Germany two years ago. Across social media, everyday activities such as making dinner for yourself, going for a walk or buying yourself flowers have been transformed into acts of feminist empowerment. The hashtag for the trend - ‘Romanticise your life' - has over 1.5 billion views. Should we all be romanticising our lives more? Journalists Ellie Muir and Chanté Joseph look at the pros and cons of the trend. Women with poor mental health have an almost 50% higher risk of having a pre-term birth, that's according to a study of 2 million pregnancies in England. The research found that one in 10 women who had used mental health services before their pregnancy had a pre-term birth, compared with one in 15 who did not. We hear from one of the reports authors, Louise Howard, who is professor emerita in women's mental health at King's College London. Today is VJ day which marks the surrender of Japan and therefore the end of World War Two. Olga Henderson was 13 in 1945, starving in a camp in Singapore alongside other young internees. Now 91, Olga will join us in the studio to talk about her time in the camps recalled in her new – and first - book, In the Shadow of the Rising Sun. Journalist Ellie House is bisexual. But before she had even realised that, it felt like Big Tech had already worked it out, with some sites regularly recommending her LGBTQ content. Ellie joins Nuala to speak about her quest to understand how recommendations systems really work, and the risks and rewards of being queer online. She'll also tell us about speaking to people for whom these kind of recommendations could become potentially life-threatening. Professor Louise Howard, Professor in Women's Mental Health in the Department of Health Service & Population Research at King's College London. Differences in the epidemiology of mental disorders in men and women are well-established. Despite this, it could be argued that until recently mental health research largely ignored sex (and gender) differences, risking undermining of scientific validity and efficiency, and potentially contributing to a failure of health providers to deliver gender-sensitive mental health treatments and services, to the detriment of both men and women. The IoPPN research group Section of Women's Mental Health have therefore focused on gendered determinants of mental disorders (and other structural determinants) and investigated gender sensitive interventions particularly perinatal mental health treatments and services. In this keynote talk, Professor Howard will discuss some of the group's recent findings and their impact.

Recently, I met Louise through a mutual friend and colleague. From the first moment we spoke on a Zoom there was an instant connection. We have a few things in common. ;-) I am inspired by her work and her main ethos in her work. She is truly about helping women get their businesses in coaching and healing to run the way THEY want to run not by someone's else design. Keyword here is design. More on that in a moment.   In this interview, Louise did not hold anything back. She shares her personal journey that includes all of the following: Working in a company that she had to travel and live in a hotel for 5 days out of the week. Having an eating disorder. Through trying times, a friend gave her a book that changed the way she saw life. Lorne Byrne's book - Stairways to heaven Having both this book and Reiki ultimately helped her make a leap into creating a life she wanted. We also talk about another big influence of hers, The Course in Miracles. What did she leap into a very small business and big hopes & dreams   My Spiritual path just landed in my lap from those 2 things (Reiki & Lorne Byrne's book). So I went for some Reiki and I read the book. At that time I didn't know anything about angels…anything esoteric. Didn't know anything about the Law of attraction, anything at all. In the book she tells her journey about how she sees angels but in it she said, “You can ask them for help.” So I started to ask them for help. I'd say, “Angels help me.” I don't know what help I needed. I knew I needed help. From there I met someone else who was quite spiritual who gave me some books. And really from there I realized that I was in charge of my life. It was life wasn't happening to me, I was creating all of this stuff. And I went on a massive journey of learning to love myself and eat again. Realizing what I wanted to do with my life and eventually quit my job and started my own business. What does Louise know and how does she teach this? It's always been about her own inner work. I led her into doing more and sharing it with others. I won't give the WHOLE story away but here are some things she does to support her clients: Human Design NLP Psychology Coaching Life Scripting (soon to graduating in this) Reiki Master Aromatherapist Uh....what am I forgetting? Have a listen to this amazing, talented, funny (we giggle a lot!) Holistic mindset & business coach tell you How she found her CFI (chief fun investigator) and how you can do it too!  A little bit about Louise:  Louise is a holistic mindset b& business coach helping coaches, healers & therapists who are sick & tired of going round in circles create a consistent income in their business without the hustle. Using a blend of life scrip & human design coaching. Helping her clients move from struggle and hustle to flow, ease & achieving those income goals! Louise uses a wealth of knowledge that she gained from studying psychology, NLP, psychotherapy, holistic coaching and her own personal experiences in business to help entrepreneurs ditch the limiting beliefs & past conditioning to enable them to master their mindset and create a business and life that they love. When Louise isn't working you'll find her on her yoga matt (she's a yoga teacher) reading, meditating or doing some sort of spiritual stuff! You can find her work at her website , http://www.louisehowardcoaching.com, and on Facebook here, https://www.facebook.com/groups/enlightenedentrepreneuracademy/   P.S. This podcast is about the concept and practice of supported employment programmes. We all have concerns about helping patients maximise their potential, and of course, meaningful work is one of the prime ways in which this is achieved. In an uncommon trial for the UK, Dr Louise Howard and colleagues conducted a randomised controlled trial of an American system called IPS or Individual Placement Support, to see if this evidence based programme would be as effective over here in the UK. Their paper helps shed a lot of light on the challenges that supported employment programme participants and professionals face.
