The role of the artist in the climate crisis is not simply to communicate scientific information in a sort of dressed up kind of way, but really to engage the imagination to do that thing that only art can do, which is getting at these almost imperceptible shifts in identity, in purpose and meaning, and the way that we as humans think about our relationship with the natural world and our place in it. It's ineffable, that kind of shift. If that's not the role of art, I don't know what is.  Judi Pearl has been a passionate environmentalist since her early teens here in Ottawa, unceded Algonquin-Anishinaabe lands. In addition to her long-standing role with the English Theatre Department at the National Arts Centre, Judi formerly served on the boards of The Only Animal theatre company and the Professional Association of Canadian Theatres also known as PACT.Judi is also a co-founder, along with myself, Anjali Appadurai, Robin Sokoloski, David Maggs, Kendra Fanconi and Anthony Garoufalis-Auger of SCALE (Sectoral Climate Arts Leadership for the Emergency), a non-profit network of artists, cultural practitioners, and arts organisations committed to addressing the climate emergency. This organization was founded in 2021, where Judi was also the Operations Lead until 2023. You can learn about SCALE by listening to its current leader of SCALE, Annette Hegel, in e176 art as a tactic.At the NAC, Judi has produced large-scale projects such as Grand Acts of Theatre, Stages of Transformation, the NAC Hip Hop Theatre Festival, the annual ceremony for the Siminovitch Prize (2016-2020) as well as Family Day (2011-2015), among many others. She was also the recipient of the CEO's Award of Excellence in 2020. Well deserved, I'm sure. My first conversation with Judi  (e59 pearl – positive tipping points) took place during a walk in the park here in Ottawa where we talked about theatre, the climate emergency, collaboration, arts leadership, the intersection of arts and sustainability and elusive positive tipping points. When I first Sanita's play I was blown away. I loved it. Irresistible NeighbourhoodsIt was good to reconnect with Judi, the theatre producer and climate activist. I've always appreciated Judi's insights on art and climate emergency policy as well as her moral clarity, for example : What we hear is extremism on both sides, even though those extremist views are often, I think, a minority, and yet those are the voices we hear the most that get the most attention and then because of the way social media works or the media in general works, that extremism tends to beget more extremism, hence polarization just gets worse and worse. Dans un village vivait une vieille dame nommée Zokou et sa fille Sanita. Un jour, alors qu'elles se préparaient pour le champ, Dame Zokou demanda à Sanita de porter les ignames et le fût d'eau, mais cette dernière refusa. Arrivées au champ, Dame Zokou travailla tandis que Sanita préparait le repas. Pendant le déjeuner, Sanita voulut boire de l'eau, mais Dame Zokou refusa en la jugeant capricieuse et paresseuse. Elle lui suggéra d'aller à la rivière, en lui indiquant de prendre à droite pour éviter la rivière du génie Dadimi. Cependant, Sanita se perdit et fut avalée par Dadimi. Dame Zokou, ne voyant pas sa fille revenir, courut à la rivière, mais sa fille avait disparu. Depuis cette tragédie, on enseigne aux enfants de ce village à fuir la paresse et à écouter les conseils de leurs parents pour éviter les dangers. L'Afrique en conte est une série créée par l'association Des Livres Pour Tous - Côte d'Ivoire et Making Waves, en partenariat avec RFI. 25. maijā Latvijas Nacionālajā teātrī 70 gadu jubileju svinēs viens no senākajiem un nozīmīgākajiem tautas deju ansambļiem Latvijā – TDA „Dzintariņš”, kas ir neatņemama mūsdienu Latvijas tautas deju kultūrzīme. Kopš 2018. gada mākslinieciskā vadība uzticēta ansambļa repetitorei Sanitai Misikai. Viņa pati 15 gadus dejojusi „Dzintariņā”, tālākais ceļš vedis uz TDA “Dancis”. Pabeidzot Kultūras un izglītības darbinieku tehnikumu, Jānis Ērglis aicinājis dejot uz VDA „Daile” un skaisti pieci gadi pavadīti profesionālajā mākslā līdz ansambļa likvidācijai. 1997./ 1998. gada sezonā Sanita uzsāka asistenta darbu TDA „Dzintariņš”, bet no 2018. gada ir šī kolektīva vadītāja. Paralēli Sanita strādā Rīgas Stradiņauniversitātes TDA „Ačkups” kā asistente un vēl viņa ir Rīgas Valsts 2. ģimnāzijas deju kolektīva vadītāja. Sanita Misika dzīvo dejā, jo tā ir ne tikai darbs un hobijs. "Augšā kāds nolemj, ko tu darīsi, ko ne. Kad mani maziņu vecāki aizveda dejot uz "Dzintariņu", man jau patika tas, ka tur ir bērni. Man vispār ļoti patīk strādāt ar bērniem. Kad nodejoju "Dzintariņā", es gribēju stāties Mūzikas akadēmijā, bet tajā laikā bija tās neklātienes, kur tev vajadzēja darba stāžu, jo neņēma jau tā un uzņemšana bija pa 2-3 gadiem, stāsta Sanita Misika. "Man nebija darba stāža tai gadā, kad es biju pabeigusi vidusskolu, mani ceļi aizveda uz Kultūras darbinieku tehnikumu. Arī pilnīgi negaidīti, jo viens no komisijas uzrunāja: "Zaķīt, nāc pie mums, nebūs sliktāk!" Un nebija arī sliktāk. Tas ir tas laiks, ko var atcerēties tikai un vienīgi ar smaidu un prieku - tehnikuma laiki! Un tā es kļuva par kolektīvu vadītāju." "Tad mani uzaicināja uz Valsts deju ansambli "Daile" dejot. Ak dievs, tie bija visskaistākie gadi manā mūžā! Un tajā brīdī, kad valstij mēs kļuvām par grūtu, tas bija 1997. gads. (..) Tad mani uzrunāja skolotāja Olga [Freiberga]: nāc pie manis uz "Dzintariņu", man vajag repetitoru. Un tajā brīdī es sapratu: es jau neko citu nemāku. Un atgriezties savā mīļajā "Dzintariņā" tas ir tikai un vienīgi gods." Olga Freiberga arī iesaistījusi uzvedumos kā dejotāju, kur bijušas nepieciešamas pieaugušo lomas. "Mazajiem jau tajā brīdī, kad dejo skolotājs, viņam ir pilnīgi cita attieksme pret dejošanu. Viņš mēģina atdarināt savu skolotāju. Tas darbs, kas notiek zālē, to nevar salīdzināt ar to, ka tas skolotājs ir kopā ar bērnu uz skatuves. Jā, forši!" gandarīta Sanita Misika. Bet šajā jubilejas koncertā pati kā dejotāja uz skatuves nebūs.  "Šī ir pirmā jubileja, kad es pati nedejošu. Varbūt es pēc 10 gadiem dejošu. Jā, bet šajā jubilejā nedejošu," atzīst Misika. Sanita Misika kā horeogrāfe iestudē dažādus pasākumus, izrādes. Viņa strādā ar aktieriem un šajos uzvedumos iesaista arī "Dzintariņa" dejotājus. "Viņi papildina un krāšņo to visu, jo ne vienmēr aktieris var izdarīt un izdejot tā, kā to izdarīs dejotājs. Šāda sadarbība man ir ar Juri Milleru, Latvijas Jaunatnes teātri un fantastiskiem aktieriem kā Edgars Lipors, Jānis Skanis, Jānis Kirmuška, Elīna Bojarkina. Es varu saukt un saukt, visi viņi man ir mīļi, dārgi," priecājas Sanita Misika. Bet kā norit darbs ar aktieriem, kas tomēr nav profesionāli dejotāji, lai arī apguvuši dejas mākslu. "Man ir tā: man ir bijusi iecere, es sāku "likt deju virsū" un saprotu - nē, nebūs. Es redzu, ka viņš neiznes, vai nav tik plastisks tas cilvēks... Zinu, kas spēlēs konkrēto lomu, tāpēc pielāgojos aktierim pēc viņu spējām," atklāj Sanita Misika. Bet jautāta, kas ir horeogrāfs, ko viņš darba, Sanita Misika atklāj, ka devu vispirms nosapņo, ierauga to, kam jābūt konkrētajā dejā, kā atklāt konkrēto mūziku un vārdu. "Es neesmu horeogrāfs pēc profesijas, bet tas droši vien ir kaut kur ielikts šūpulī, kaut kur ir ielikts," uzskata Sanita Misika. Ko deja dod cilvēkam? "Galvenais ir deju nepielīdzināt sportam, tā nav sportošana, bet viņi patērē daudz vairāk enerģiju nekā sportojot, gan arī viņi izliek to dvēselīti, jo viņi jau dejo ar sirsniņu. Viņi smaida. Viņi izdejo. Tur jau ir arī jābūt skolotājam, kas to bērnu nevis izdresē dejot, bet, kad bērns saprot, ko viņš dara, kā viņš dejo. Jāpieiet ir ar sapratni," analizē Sanita Misika. "Tam jābūt visam ir ļoti vieglam un skaistam. Bērnus nedrīkst dresēt. Citreiz paskatoties uz daudziem arī kolektīviem, redzi, ka tie bērni visi ir izdresēti, vienādi visi, bet tur vairs sirsniņa viņam nedejo. Jo viņam ir bail, ka viņš kaut ko neizdarīs, un tad būs... lielas nepatikšanas." Tajā pašā laikā Sanita Misika sarunā arī atklāj, ka mēģinājumā, lai uzrunātu 50 bērnus, ir jārunā pārsvarā skaļi, noteikti, bet reizēm ir arī jāpačukst. "Mana skolotāja Olga savā laikā mācīja: ja tu pie bērna neiesi ar smaidu, viņš nekad nesmaidīs pretī publikai. Ja tu smaidīsi viņam, viņš smaidīs tev atpakaļ. Un lai cik it kā varbūt aizskaroši kādreiz ir, ka viņam nav tā kāja tā pacelta. Bet ja tu to pateiks ar smaidu, tu taču vari augstāk, arī tas bērns tieši tā arī darīs, viņš arī pacels augstāk," norāda Sanita Misika.

Sanita un citas kolēģes arī iepriekš saskārušās ar naidīgiem komentāriem un draudiem internetā, tāpēc runājam par mūsu sabiedrības agresijas līmeni, uzbrukumiem žurnālistiem, žurnālista spēju un vajadzību būt drosmīgiem, pašcenzūru un citām aktuālām tēmām, kas skar mūsu visu ikdienu. Anete Ašmane-Vilsone: Pašcenzūra varētu parādīties arī žurnālistu vidē, jo arī viņi mēdz saņemt dažādus uzbrukumus gan sociālajos tīklos un interneta vidē, gan pat klātienē. Sanita Jemberga: Latvijā klātienē tādu gadījumu, paldies Dievam, ir ļoti, ļoti maz. Mums "Re:Baltica" sanāk satikt un strādāt kopā ar dažādu valstu žurnālistiem, un dzirdot, kas notiek, piemēram, Centrālāzijas vai pat dažās tā saucamajās Eiropas valstīs, sapratu, ka pie mums viss ir labi. Manuprāt, pašcenzūra jau ir iestājusies. Viens no iemesliem, kāpēc jutos spiesta uzrakstīt seriāla “Šķelšanās” scenāriju, bija tas, ka cilvēki, arī žurnālisti, vairs neiet meklēt visus viedokļus. Viņi paši zina, ka ja viņiem būs nepareizie viedokļi, kas nesakrīt ar meinstrīmu, viņi vienkārši internetā "atrausies". Nevienam negribas katru dienu klausīties, cik tu esi slikts un nepareizs, kā tu nemāki neko darīt,... Cik korumpēts esi un kas tev maksā vai nemaksā. Jā, un kas tik tu neesi. Es vienmēr saku - jā, maksā Kremlis, maksā Soross, paskatos kontā - kur tā nauda? Kā nav, tā nav visus šos gadus (smiekli). Bet pašcenzūra eksistē, un man to ļoti negribas. Es esmu tieši tik jauna, lai nebūtu piedzīvojusi tos padomju gadus, kad cilvēki tajā nonāca. Sāku strādāt žurnālistikā  neilgi pēc tam, kad bijām atguvuši brīvību. Kad skatos uz viedokļu dažādību un spēju runāt tajā laikā, kas arī ir ļoti trausls, un salīdzinu ar tagadējo, man liekas, ka… Nav foršs tas virziens. Ja nav dažādu viedokļu, tad nav arī dažādu domu, un beigās visi domā, ka ir kārtībā. Bet nav. Teicāt, ka klātienē žurnālistiem reti uzbrūk, bet sociālie tīkli un internets gan… Arī “Šķelšanās”, dažādi sabiedrisko mediju portāli, kas ir izcēluši konkrētas mazāku sabiedrības grupu problēmas. Kā ar to cīnīties? Manās rokās nonāca Filipa Bampa raksts par to, ka žurnālistiem jāiemācās sevi aizstāvēt. Gan raksta sākumā, gan raksta beigās viņš onāk pie secinājuma, ka neviens nezina, kā to izdarīt. Tas ir lielisks jautājums, jo arī pati esmu ilgstoši ignorējusi šos uzbrukumus žurnālistiem, sabiedriskajiem medijiem un "Re:Baltica", domājot, ka “nu, labi, ir citas lietas, ar ko nodarboties, nekā cīnīties ar idiotismu”. No otras puses, tu jau redzi, no kurienes tie uzbrukumi nāk. Pamatā tie nāk no, pirmkārt, politiķiem vai wannabe politiķiem, kuri šādā veidā mēģina pārliecināt pārējo sabiedrību, ka medijiem nevar ticēt, bet viņiem var. Vienā no “Šķelšanās” sērijām parādās tas, kā tiek būvēta šī alternatīvā realitāte, pilnīgi pretēja tam, kas patiesībā notiek. Mērķis ir ne jau konkrētie žurnālisti, bet žurnālistika kā tāda, pateikt, ka tai nevar ticēt. Bet, ja nevar ticēt žurnālistikai, kur tu to uzticamo informāciju iegūsi - internetā, no tīkliem? Mēs esam sapratuši, ka, pirmkārt, ir jāstāv pretī un solidāri jāaizstāv savi kolēģi, bet viņi ir arī jākritizē tad, kad ir, par ko, lai nav sajūtas, ka tā ir noslēgta kasta, kuru nedrīkst kritizēt. Otrkārt, mums jāskaidro, kā žurnālistika strādā. Mēs to pieņemam par pašsaprotamu, ka cilvēks saprot, kā un kāpēc top ziņas, un to mēs "Re:Baltica" darījām arī seriālā “Karmas latvieši”, kas bija pirms “Šķelšanās”, kas bija vienkārši tāds šarlatānu seriāls (smiekli). “Šķelšanās” tiek rādīta redakcija Daugavpilī, kur redzams, ko cilvēki nāk mums stāstīt, kā tas tiek apstrādāts un kā mēs ejam meklēt komentārus. Ļoti bieži ir reakcija “mediji mums to nestāsta”. Tu nevari pastāstīt to, uz ko tev neatbild. Bet man jāsaka, ka mēs iegūstam ļoti lielu iedvesmu un atbalstu no cilvēkiem, kuri mums raksta vēstules gan e-pastā, gan sociālajos tīklos, tāpēc man ir šis lūgums - ja cilvēkam patīk, ko žurnālisti dara, tad, lūdzu, neklusējiet, mums tas ir svarīgi! Mums nav svarīgas tās balvas, bet tas, ka kādam ir vajadzīgs tas, ko mēs daram. Kad saņem to, tad domā “nu labi, lai tie anonīmie varoņi internetā bļaustās, bet reālam cilvēkam tu esi vajadzīgs”, un kamēr ir šī sajūta, tikmēr, es domāju, var strādāt.

I think artists can challenge us by showing our blind spots, in a way, educating us, but also inspiring us about what's possible, right? I think in SCALE we talk about re-authoring the world. That's what artists do. We re-author the world. She is the founder of Grief Under Grace and Anaya's Project. Right now many people are dealing with grief and loss whether its loss of a job or loss of a family member. As mom's we also may be shouldering the unseen grief or loss of our family members including shouldering the emotions of our children and what they may be experiencing at this time. Sanita shares her story of infant loss and infertility and breaks down the various facets of grief, why its important to grieve and the steps to acknowledge grief in yourself and others and the path to healing.
