For the past month I was trying to come up with an idea for the 19th Anniversary of this podcast, "The Zone with Timm McCoy". I have had dreams, for a while about Gilda Radner of SNL Fame. No idea why. Seeing "Love Gilda" postings on Facebook, search engines, You Tube, etc. So, I think it was Gilda telling me to do a show based on her life, comedy, music and her Broadway Smash "Live From New York, It's Gilda Radner". With my wife, Joan and my "inner child", "Clara The Sheep". The transition from our discussion about story-telling morphed quite easily into a chat about the wonderful Gilda Radner. As happens from time to time, our own aches and pains entered theconversation: Agnes' comments on her knee injury led to an interesting discussion of knee braces and Mar Sulaika's dental comments ended up in a discussion about dental schools and professional women. Please remember that when we discuss anything medical, we speak anecdotally, with no medical training. If Agnes's knee injury sounds like yours, you still need to refer to your own medical specialists for advice on your specific issue. When the subject of men enters our discussion today, please do not take the comments as derisive. As you get to know us, you'll realize that we do like men, we do also have some opinions that we voice. No offense is meant to our friends, the men. Who doesn’t love Gilda Radner? Love, Gilda – a revealing documentary about Gilda Radner – is reviewed during this special episode, and Gilda’s famous tap dance audition gets special attention. This splendid documentary is a well-deserved homage to a terrific entertainer. Although appearing in seven movies, Gilda received her highest acclaim for the hilarious characters she brought to life on Saturday Night Live. Who can forget Emily Litella, Roseanna Roseannadanna and Bawba Wawa? In fact, Gilda was the first performer hired for SNL, and she won an Emmy for Outstanding Performance on that show. She also starred in a one-woman Broadway show called Gilda Live. In addition to her films and TV credits, Gilda wrote It’s Always Something, a candid memoir about her struggle with cancer. Gilda’s movies include: HAUNTED HONEYMOON, ANIMALYMPICS, THE WOMAN IN RED, THE LAST DETAIL, MOVERS AND SHAKERS, HANKY PANKY and FIRST FAMILY.
It's our first official episode of 2019 and it's one Bob and Akil have had in the bag for a while. We Watched Lisa Dapolito's "Love, Gilda" in theaters during the Nashville Jewish Film Festival for a one night screening done by the Festival with the help of Gilda's Club, a cancer support non-profit. Gilda Radner was a unique and influential comedic personality with a legendary career who left us waaaaay too soon. Let Bob and Akil tell you about her life story in this "In Theaters" edition. We actually have a lot in common with Gilda because we've also made out with Martin Short. Akil achieves a franchise record as he and Bob manage an episode less than an hour long. Akil was also very charmed to be in a theater surrounded by Jewish people. It's kind of adorable, actually. Mazel Tov. Keep on Doccin'® www.documenteerspodcast.com
Gilda Radner puts a smile on the faces of people who remember watching her as one of the original cast members of Saturday Night Live, where she created and portrayed such now-classic comic characters as Roseanne Roseannadanna, Emily Litella and Lisa Loopner. LOVE, GILDA, directed by Lisa D’Apolito, is a true autobiography, told in Gilda’s words and in her own voice. Working with the Radner Estate, D’Apolito unearthed a collection of diaries and personal audio and videotapes documenting her childhood, her comedy career, her relationships and ultimately, her struggle with cancer. This never-before-seen footage and journal entries form the narrative spine of the documentary, allowing Gilda to tell her own story-- through the laughter and sometimes the tears. Incredibly, she was able to find humor in even the darkest of times. Gilda’s spirit lives on in comedy as a female trailblazer who continues to inspire many present day comedic performers, including Bill Hader, Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolph, and Cecily Strong. Also interviewed are SNL original cast members-- Chevy Chase, Laraine Newman and Paul Shaffer-- as well as, Lorne Michaels (SNL creator and producer), Alan Zweibel (SNL writer), Stephen Schwartz (Broadway composer); Andrew Alexander (CEO of Second City) and long-time friend Martin Short. LOVE, GILDA Director Lisa D’Apolito talks about the unique window her loving film provides into the honest and whimsical world of a beloved performer whose greatest role was sharing her own story. On this week's episode we take a look at three new films: Blaze, Pick of the Litter and Love, Gilda. Art House News: The specialty Box Office this week was all about Colette and it's spectacular debut in limited release. It opens here on October 12th. The expectations for any film directed by Michael Moore have been unrealistic for years, and Fahrenheit 11/9 is no exception. Unfortunately, Moore himself isn't helping by setting unrealistic expectations himself. #CedarLee3: This week’s list of films you should be watching was inspired by Pick of the Litter and got us thinking about the different kinds of roles dogs have played in wildly different films throughout the years. After getting a condensed TIFF (ding!) report from Jason, we do our best to stay calm while reviewing Michael Moore's FAHRENHEIT 11/9, diverge in our takes on the Gilda Radner doc LOVE, GILDA, and take a hatchet to LIZZIE.

This sound of performance artist Anthony Ptak. Liner notes: Before the Flood (2014) [4:02] Before the Flood 2013 is an original composition by Anthony Ptak, this performance was recorded a Gildas Club NYC after participation in an interview for the yet to be released documentary film Love Gilda. Anthony Ptak is an artist, composer, and cancer survivor. Here he plays the piano after his brain cancer had seriously debilitated his left hand. The title has a double meaning. The piano has since been removed from Gildas Club following a building flood that did serious damage, also the metaphor of flood has not been lost on the composer. That is to say, flood of tears, flood of emotion, cancer itself, etc. Dedicated to persons with cancer, and their families everywhere. -AJ Ptak
