Three years before the first episode of SNL. Four years before the first episode of SCTV. Martin Short, Eugene Levy, Gilda Radner. Andrea Martin and later Dave Thomas, co-starred in a legendary production of a musical called Godspell at the Royal Alexandra Theatre in Toronto. The show that launched the careers of a whole generation of comedians is now the subject of a new doc at TIFF. Appropriately titled, You Had to Be There: How The Toronto Godspell Ignited the Comedy Revolution, Spread Love and Overalls, and Created a Community that Changed the World (In a Canadian Kind of Way).Today we speak with someone who had a front row seat to it all. Paul Shaffer, of Letterman fame, but who back in the days of Godspell was just a kid from Thunder Bay gigging in strip clubs on Younge Street. That is, until he landed the job of musical director for the play that would change the comedy world as we know it.Caleb Thompson (Audio Editor), Bruce Thorson (Senior Producer), max collins (Director of Audio), Jesse Brown (Editor and Publisher)Reported by Ilana GordonFact checking by Julian AbrahamAdditional music by Audio NetworkFurther Reading:You Had to Be There at TIFFYou Had To Be There - IMDBYou Had To Be There - TrailerSponsors: Squarespace: Check out Squarespace.com/canadaland for a free trial, and when you're ready to launch use code canadaland to save 10% off your first purchase of a website or domain.Douglas: Douglas is giving our listeners a FREE Sleep Bundle with each mattress purchase. Robin Hardy, en 1973, signe The Wicker Man, le Dieu dʹosier. A gifted singer-songwriter in his own right, Jordan is also the son of the late, great Warren Zevon — the genius, the icon, the soon-to-be Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee.Warren Zevon was a brilliantly bright thread woven into the fabric of David Letterman's legacy, appearing on the show more than 30 times as a guest, musical performer, and even stepping in as guest bandleader when Paul Shaffer was away. His work and wit were cherished by fans — and by Dave himself.Joining in the conversation is friend of the show and official Warren Zevon historian Adam Unger, who helps navigate this heartfelt and often funny discussion. Jordan opens up about what it was like being Warren's son, shares personal insights into his father's legacy, and recalls his own performances on Late Show, including a memorable one with The Wallflowers. In 1978, T Bear signed with RCA Records and released Red, Hot & Blue that featured Les Dudek, Billy Squier, and the Brecker Brothers. He has shared the stage with Richie Havens, Odetta, The Doobie Brothers and Jeff Beck. Domestic responsibilities and a struggle to regain his sobriety, which he did in 1983, forced him to put his music career on hold. He became instrumental in developing the Musicians Picnic, serving on its board of directors, which led to the creation of Musicians Assistance Program, now part of MusiCares Foundation. T Bear credits his late wife for encouraging his comeback. After a self-imposed hiatus from the music industry that lasted nearly three decades, T Bear, aka Richard T Bear, keyboardist, vocalist, songwriter, returns with a new album, Fresh Bear Tracks, released on Quarto Valley Records. A blend of blues, soul and rock with a who's who of special guests including Stephen Stills, Robby Krieger, Edgar Winter, Tom Scott, Walter Trout, Hutch Hutchinson, Laurence Juber, and more. Produced by Grammy Award winner Tony Braunagel, Fresh Bear Tracks was recorded at Robby Krieger's studio in Los Angeles. instagram.com/richard_tbearContact us: makingsoundpodcast.comFollow on Instagram: @makingsoundpodcastFollow on Threads: @jannkloseJoin our Facebook GroupPlease support the show with a donation, thank you for listening!

On April 19, 1980, legendary character actor Strother Martin hosted Saturday Night Live—and delivered a surprisingly strong performance. Best known for his unforgettable roles in films like Cool Hand Luke, True Grit, Slap Shot, The Wild Bunch, Up in Smoke, and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Martin brought his unique presence and versatility to Studio 8H for one memorable night. Nick looks back at this fascinating episode, featuring a clever Cool Hand Luke parody and a mix of strange, sharp, and hilarious sketches. Along the way, he shares behind-the-scenes stories about how some of the show's most unusual comedy came together. You'll hear standout moments from cast members Bill Murray, Gilda Radner, Harry Shearer, Garrett Morris, Paul Shaffer, and more—plus material that feels just as politically relevant today as it did in 1980. It's a fun, deep dive into a night when one of Hollywood's most underrated talents—often mistaken for Tennessee Williams—stepped into the world of live sketch comedy and left his mark. [Ep 119]

Jimmy Vivino Live on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson It had been six long, 4 1/2 COVID years since last I sat down with my old friend, multi-instrumentalist, producer, composer, and long-time musical director for Conan O'Brien, Jimmy Vivino. It was like coming home. Almost the same age, we have many shared (unbeknownst to us at the time) memories of concerts at The Filmore East, Watkins Glen, the glory daze of the NY club scene, and a bounty of mutual friends. Talk about being in one's comfort zone. Jimmy talked growing up in New Jersey, his carpenter trumpet-playing father, his talented brothers, Jerry and Floyd, and how they began and evolved - he talked Conan, Laura Nyro, Phoebe Snow, Donald Fagen, John Sebastian, Al Kooper, Levon Helm, The Allman Brothers, Albert King, Tom Petty, Prince, Bruno Mars, Michael McDonald, Johnny Johnson, Hubert Sumlin, Stevie Wonder, Muddy Waters, Pinetop Perkins, John Sebastian, The Dead, The Band, Harry Shearer, Paul Shaffer, whom he credits as his mentor, Leader of the Pack, Broadway, Ronnie Spector, Felix Cavaliere, The Rascals, Frankie Valli, Slash, Sly Stone, The J. Geils Band, Elvis Costello, and the James Brown and Friends Set Fire To The Soul with Aretha, Robert Palmer, and Joe Cocker, that he orchestrated. Incredible stories all around, and this special is available on YouTube… wow - Snuff and I just watched it. Spectacular. We talked about COVID and Jimmy joining Canned Heat, currently touring with them, and Bill Murray, as well as still doing shows with Will Lee and The Fab Faux. His first all-original album, Gonna Be 2 of Those Days, is due to drop in February, signed copies are available for pre-sale at jimmyvmusic.com He treated us to a track to close the show. Life is busy, busy. busy… just the way Jimmy likes it. And so do we who follow and adore him. I so enjoyed every second of this. Jimmy needs to write a book and get all these stories down. He knows and has played with everyone. Such fun! Bio (from website) Based in Los Angeles, Richard T Bear boasts a career that spans more than 40 years, one that led to a string of noted solo albums and collaborations with a dizzying list of revered artists. In 1978, he signed with RCA Records and released his debut album, Red, Hot, and Blue, produced by Jack Richardson (Bob Seger, The Guess Who). The album featured a notable group, Les Dudek, Billy Squier, Paul Shaffer, and the Becker Brothers. The album spawned the single “Sunshine Hotel.” A remix of the song climbed to number four on the world dance charts before becoming the dance staple that it remains today. A second album titled Bear includes a rendition of the Rolling Stones' classic “Ruby Tuesday,” followed by The Best of Richard T Bear and Captured Alive, a concert recorded in Hamburg, Germany. In 1984, he moved to Teldec Records, which led to the release of The Bear Truth, and the Giorgio Moroder produced album The Runner. He has appeared on numerous recordings including Crosby, Stills and Nash's “Southern Cross,” The Blues Brothers Soundtrack, Richie Havens Mixed Bag II, Kiss members Gene Simmons and Peter Criss' solo ventures, as well as Toby Beau's hit single “My Angel Baby,” Billy Squier's solo debut Tale of the Tape, and former Rascals Gene Cornish and Dino Danelli. He would also pen the song “Love and Pain,” one of the standout tracks on Cher's blockbuster album Take Me Home. He has shared the stage with artists such as Richie Havens, Odetta, The Doobie Brothers, and Jeff Beck, to name a few.Domestic responsibilities and a struggle to regain his sobriety forced him to put his musical career on hold. In 1983, T Bear gained his sobriety and focused on helping others with addiction, and became instrumental in developing the Musicians Picnic, serving on its board of directors. The annual event led to the creation of the Musicians Assistance Program (MAP), a non-profit organization that is now part of the Recording Academy's MusiCares F Visit the Self-Care Institute at https://www.selfcareinstitute.com/ Support the Show.Visit www.creativepeacemeal.com to leave a review, fan voicemail, and more!Insta @creative_peacemeal_podcastFB @creativepeacemealpodBonfire https://www.bonfire.com/store/creative-peacemeal/Redbubble CPPodcast.redbubble.comCreative Peacemeal READING list here Donate to AhHa!Broadway here! Send us a Text Message. When the microphone goes live and the recording light blinks red, there's no telling where the conversation with Kevn Kinney of Drivin N Cryin might venture. This time around, we found ourselves caught in the crosswinds of Atlanta's rock scene, reminiscing about the landmarks and laugh-lines of a city that's as much a character in the music as the strum of a guitar. Kevn's personal recollections, peppered with tales of his Gaelic heritage and the unintentional rechristening of his name thanks to a utility bill, set the stage for a chat as rich and varied as the band's discography.Atlanta's thrumming heartbeats echoed through our discussion as Kevn spun yarns of the community that fostered Drivin N Cryin's unmistakable sound. We unpacked the backstories of crowd favorites, peeled back the curtain on the artistry of busking, and delved into the joys and jitters of live performances. And if you've ever wondered what it's like to jam under the glaring lights of Saturday Night Live, well, Kevn's got the inside scoop. From the whirlwind of improvisation with Paul Shaffer to rubbing elbows with the stars, we tumbled through memories like loose guitar picks. Every performance, whether on a street corner or the SNL stage, carries with it a story—and in this episode, we strummed through many, each note a gateway to the next. And this is just Part 1. www.drivinncryin.comOn tour through September. Please Like and Follow our Facebook page Music In My Shoes. You can contact us at musicinmyshoes@gmail,com.

Well everyone, we had to hold off a week for our final summer tour episode because we heard from our good friend, Paul Shaffer, about an upcoming charity event he and Jeff Barry are having for Paul's daughter Victoria and her Pup Culture Rescue, a dog/puppy rescue service out of Los Angeles. We talk of that event coming up Wednesday, September 13th at the Write-off Room at 11502 Ventura Blvd in Studio City, CA called Doo Wah Ditties for Doggies. Jeff Barry will also guest with Paul. Jeff Barry wrote or co-wrote "Chapel of Love", "Leader of the Pack", "Do Wah Diddy Diddy", "Hanky Panky", "Sugar, Sugar", "I Honestly Love You", "Da Doo Ron Ron", and "Be My Baby" to name a few so enough said there". Enjoy this awesome episode and learn some surprising factoids about Mr. Paul Shaffer himself!

GGACP salutes the life and career of the late, great actor-comedian Richard Belzer by revisiting this memorable interview from back in 2018. In this episode, Richard is joined by former GGACP guests Tom Leopold and Paul Shaffer for a hilarious round-table discussion of essential topics, including: the glory days of Catch a Rising Star, the Jackie Mason-Ed Sullivan feud, the infamous Chevy Chase roast and the war between Gallagher and “Gallagher Too.” Also, Señor Wences sells the act, Alan King lusts after Topo Gigio, Liza plays the Rhineland and Mick Jagger pays “The Belz” a rare compliment. PLUS: “Al Capone, the Musical”! The return of Dick & Stinky! The ballad of Perfecto Telles! Gilbert “louses” Harry Shearer! And Richard remembers his friend (and hero) Jerry Lewis.
