Sports superfans may seem to have been born bleeding their teams’ colors, but really, they’re created. It happens around formative events: a buzzer-beating come-from-behind win, a once-in-a-generation athlete or a championship season. This year probably saw a few Seattle uberfans get converted during the Seahawks’ dominating Superbowl performance. Tonight, some more sports fanatics may be formed. Game 4 of the Professional Women’s Hockey League finals begins in a few hours, and new champions could be crowned. Sadly, Seattle’s PWHL team, the Torrent, is not among those vying for the title. But the team still managed to capture its own share of superfans during their inaugural season. One of those is our producer Jason Burrows. If you’ve noticed that we mentioned the Torrent a lot this year, it’s because of him. We decided to let him have one more go, talking about his new favorite team. We were more than a little surprised to learn how far he has fallen. What happens when something that once felt impossible suddenly feels… normal? In this short solo episode of Real Women's Work, Jen shares a deeply personal experience attending a sold-out Professional Women's Hockey League game with her daughter — and the unexpected moment that stopped her cold: sitting in traffic outside the arena realizing all those people were there to watch women play hockey. For girls who grew up as athletes in the 90s, hearing "nobody watches women's sports" was constant background noise. This episode reflects on what it means to witness real cultural change in real time — packed arenas, young girls wearing jerseys, fans debating player stats, and women athletes finally being treated as simply… athletes. It's about visibility. Progress. Generational change. And the powerful things that happen when girls grow up seeing what's possible. Topics include: Growing up as a female athlete in the 90s The emotional impact of attending a sold-out PWHL game Why visibility changes ambition The connection between sports, culture, and possibility What daughters inherit from the women who came before them If you've ever wondered whether cultural progress is real — this episode is a reminder that sometimes you can feel it happening around you.

Hello to you listening in Rabat, Capital of Morocco! Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Story Prompt Friday and your host, Diane Wyzga. As the story goes I refused to transition from toddler diapers to toddler big girl pull ups the traditional way. No matter what they promised I was not going to sit on the Little Human pot. I wanted to sit on the Big Human's porcelain throne.  Maybe my mother saw genius in my independence or maybe she was just harried with more babies coming along behind me every 18 months or so. She gave in. I did potty training my way. But doing it “my way” didn't happen nearly as often as the story seems to foretell. That little girl's voice got shut down and ignored in the din of other voices, voices of authority, duty, church, obligation, and responsibility. And yet, her voice wasn't gone; it was just gone missing. In time she went looking for it. Named it and claimed it as her own voice. Now she helps professional women change their narrative so they are seen, heard, understood, and listened to. Story Prompt: Somewhere in the long ago you realized that there is no other voice like yours. When did you choose to use it? How did you decide to do it your way, with your voice. PWHL Detroit is officially happening: the city's new Professional Women's Hockey League franchise will play at Little Caesar's Arena starting in the 2026–2027 season, in black, silver, and a hint of Red Wings red. The PWHL Awards and entry draft are coming to Detroit on June 16th and 17th, and roster building kicks off May 28th. Norris Howard weighs in on the collapse of Spirit Airlines — plus, the case for trains over short-haul flights. Downtown development: The historic 1908 Ford Building on Griswold — a Daniel Burnham Chicago-style gem — is headed to auction at just 14% occupancy, raising questions about what it takes to bring Detroit's financial district back to life. [Crain's Detroit] Jer and Norris dream big: 100,000 people in 7.2 square miles, a Trader Joe's in the State Savings Bank, and density done right. Bedrock's Belle — a 1926 Beaux Arts building on Broadway — is now accepting pre-lease tours on its 42 newly finished units. And coming soon to Southwest Detroit at 2545 Bagley: Tigris, a hi-fi listening bar with a custom Bing Audio sound system, vinyl DJ sets, Middle Eastern-inspired cocktails, and a daytime café to boot. Finally, Jer is moderating a panel at the free Business of Food Summit on May 18th at the Marrow in the Market — all about what it takes to make Michigan a true culinary destination, and what Michelin recognition could mean for the state.

Why would a professional Canadian hockey player, who grew up as a Christian, transition from female to male, and then detransition back? How did God's word transform her life and what did she learn through the process of gender confusion, reassignment surgery and detransitioning? In this episode, Sean talks with author Kyla Gillespie about her new riveting book Transformed.Kyla Gillespie was born in BC, Canada. Being raised in a Christian home, she came to faith in Jesus Christ at a young age. As early as the age of five, she began to experience gender dysphoria. In her teens, wrestling with both same-sex attraction and gender dysphoria, life became difficult. She spent her late teens and adult years as a Professional Women's Hockey Player. After a lifelong battle with Gender Identity, in 2011 she fully transitioned from female to male. While living as a male for six years, God revealed himself to her in a powerful way. Since then she has fully de-transitioned and is now living out her God-given gender and sexuality as a woman in pursuit of Jesus. Kyla is an active and involved member of her local Church, Gospel City, in Port Coquitlam, BC, Canada.  ==========Think Biblically: Conversations on Faith and Culture is a podcast from Talbot School of Theology at Biola University, which offers degrees both online and on campus in Southern California.   Find all episodes of Think Biblically at: https://www.biola.edu/think-biblically.   To submit comments, ask questions, or make suggestions on issues you'd like us to cover or guests you'd like us to have on the podcast, email us at thinkbiblically@biola.edu.

Sports photography hinges on freezing peak action—transforming a high-speed blur into a dramatic portrayal of human effort. When you combine that with the unyielding drive of elite athletes on the world stage, the pressure to nail the shot provides an incredible adrenaline rush. In today's podcast, we discuss the unique challenges of documenting history in the making and unpacking stories from the Winter Games with renowned sports photographer Jean Fruth, recently back from her first Olympics.  From a hectic scramble on arrival in Milan—getting to the arena and gearing up as her first game was already in progress—to the detailed planning and creative insights she brought to every second of the ensuing competition, Jean shares her front row seat at the Games. We also follow her behind the scenes and learn how she negotiated a special request for access and her diplomatic response that transformed an unqualified maybe into a yes.  As she notes during our chat, "My Olympics was an intense women's hockey Olympics. It was—I have a chance to make something special, something different. I have two and three games per day. I'm here for almost three weeks. I have a chance to make all kinds of pictures. So, I'm not going to play it safe." Episode Timeline: 2:24: Jean's shift from baseball to hockey to promote women's sports, plus her path to photographing hockey at her first Olympics.  13:11: The high-pressure logistics behind Jean's arrival in Milan with her first game already in progress.   21:52: Photographing day two and connecting with her photography heroes.  24:30: Jean's creative approach to photographing hockey at the Games, plus the challenge of shooting through plexiglass. 28:07: Chasing the story behind Women's Olympic hockey games and the Professional Women's Hockey League (PWHL). 30:02: The ask to shoot behind-the-scenes and Jean's approach to dealing with a maybe.  35:06: Episode Break 35:51: Jean talks about her gear and the tools available to photographers in the media center.  44:21: Lugging her gear to a prime Opening Ceremonies vantage point despite wrong directions, plus the pizza delivery service that sustained her during overnight editing sessions.  50:57: Derek and Jean talk lighting, camera settings, and using a preset to pan with action shots. 54:26: The challenges of shooting through plexiglass, plus getting creative with different elements to keep it interesting—from panning techniques to playing with colors. 1:01:24: The dream moments at the end of the competition, and how Jean hustled to capture both the view from above and a central position for the team shot with medals.  1:04:25: Jean's biggest take away from the Olympics—the collaborative aspect of performing at the highest level. It felt good to be nervous and then overcome it. 1:07:14: Jean's parting advice—you belong here, having confidence in yourself, and being prepared to shift. Guest Bio: Jean Fruth does more than take pictures of sports; she tells stories of vibrant personalities and local cultures. As a Sony Artisan of Imagery, Jean has covered nearly every sport, though baseball remains her specialty. After helping to build the archive of the National Baseball Hall of Fame & Museum, she co-founded the Grassroots Baseball non-profit in 2019 to celebrate the amateur game worldwide.  Jean is also a filmmaker and the author of three books. Her latest project See Her Be Her includes a documentary film, a book, and a non-profit aimed at shining an overdue spotlight on women athletes, or "unsung sheroes," as she calls them.  Jean's work is regularly featured in prestige media and has been exhibited in major institutions from the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum to the Smithsonian to the Baseball Hall of Fame. Most recently, she was honored with the 2025 United Nations International Photographic Council Achievement Award.  For more information on our guests and the gear they use, see: www.bhphotovideo.com/explora/podcasts

Nicole Jones is the founder of Little Red Riding Hood, Inc., and today she joins us to talk about the hidden crisis of senior transportation in rural communities. Her story shows how one human moment can spark a solution that strengthens healthcare access, local economies, and community belonging. This episode is a testimony to how one moment and one person can inspire change, and a reminder to protect those who came before us so we can be stronger, more whole communities.  About Nicole: I am a 35-year-old who has made it her life's mission to help seniors in rural areas after finding a blind senior man lost in the middle of the road. My passions include weight lifting, writing (I have a novel coming out soon as a hopeful way to raise funds for the company), and the Professional Women's Hockey League (go Montreal Victoire!). I live in the small town of Bigler, PA, with my four rescue cats, two turkeys, and twelve ducks. In this episode, we cover: How a chance encounter with a stranded senior sparked a rural transportation startup Why senior mobility is directly tied to rural economic health What makes rural transportation different from Uber or Lyft How technology can work with seniors instead of around them Why honoring aging residents is critical to growing small towns Links + Resources Mentioned: Website: www.LRRHINC.com Email: Nicole@lrrhinc.com Phone number: 412-376-5145 LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/nicoleelizabethjones Want to get your business in front of our audience? When people hear "eating disorder," they picture a young stick-figure girl in ballet class. But what I see every day? CEOs with anorexia. Lawyers binge eating in office bathrooms. Doctors struggling in silence with exercise compulsion. Corporate executives who haven't eaten lunch in six months because they're "too busy." 73% of women in corporate and professional environments report engaging in at least one disordered eating behavior. And if you're a high-performing woman who feels trapped but can't connect the dots—this episode is for you. Because your workplace might be feeding your eating disorder. And it's time we talked about it. You'll discover: The chilling parallels between corporate culture and eating disorder logic How "dedication" and "discipline" can actually be disordered eating in disguise Why corporate wellness programs trigger eating disorders instead of preventing them The toxic beliefs high-performer culture promotes that fuel disordered eating Signs everyone misses in successful women who are struggling How to audit your workplace culture for ED-triggering behaviors Why your traits might be symptoms—not personality flaws How to redefine success to include your wellbeing The truth: You can be successful AND recovered. Recovery doesn't mean giving up your ambition—it means reclaiming it. THE CHILLING PARALLELS Corporate Culture Says: "I have to earn my lunch—I haven't been productive enough yet" "I can't take a break—everyone's counting on me" "If I rest, I'm falling behind" Eating Disorder Logic Says: "I have to earn my food—I haven't burned enough calories yet" "I can't eat—I have to stay in control" "If I eat, I'm losing control" It's the same framework: Your worth is conditional. Your value is based on performance. And this mindset gets you promoted—while secretly destroying your relationship with food and your body. TOXIC BELIEFS THAT FEED BOTH "Results over rest" - Your body becomes just a vehicle for performance "Discipline equals success" - Until discipline becomes rigid food rules "Mind over matter" - Glorifying disconnection from your body's signals "Optimize everything" - Your body becomes a project to control and perfect "Hustle culture" - Normalizing deprivation of food, rest, and pleasure For someone who's perfectionistic and already anxious, these messages are gasoline on a fire. SIGNS EVERYONE MISSES ✅ First one in, last one out—always "on," can't rest ✅ Skipping meals because you're "too busy" (praised as dedication) ✅ Rigid food rules disguised as "wellness" ("I don't eat carbs," "only clean foods") ✅ Over-exercising every day, even when sick or injured ✅ Talking about your body transactionally ("I earned this meal," "I have to burn this off") ✅ Avoiding work social events that involve food ✅ Exhausted but won't slow down Most of these behaviors are celebrated in high-performer culture—so you don't realize you need help. YOUR WORKPLACE CULTURE AUDIT Ask yourself: Am I praised for skipping meals or working through lunch? Does my company tie wellness to competition or performance metrics? Do I feel pressure to track, optimize, or perform my health? Are boundaries seen as weakness in my workplace? Do I feel like I have to "earn" rest, food, or self-care? Then ask: Am I using work stress as an excuse to control my food? Do I restrict when work gets overwhelming? Do I "earn" meals based on productivity? Am I exercising compulsively to manage work anxiety? If you answered yes to any of these—you're not alone. And you're not crazy. THE TRUTH ABOUT YOUR "TRAITS" Those traits you think define you? They might not be who you ARE. They might be symptoms. Symptoms of working in an environment that rewards disordered behaviors. Symptoms of impossible standards that tell you your worth is tied to your output. You are not broken. You're responding exactly how anyone would respond to these systems. REDEFINING SUCCESS True high performance: ✅ Rest is part of the strategy - not a sign of weakness ✅ Nourishment is non-negotiable - your brain needs fuel to perform ✅ Boundaries are a strength - saying no, delegating, protecting your energy ✅ Worth isn't tied to output - you're valuable because you exist ✅ Success includes wellbeing - how you feel matters as much as results Recovery doesn't take away your drive. It redirects it. You stop using discipline to destroy yourself and start using it to build the life you actually want. KEY QUOTES

This week on Sportly, Sarah Spain joins host Kavitha Davidson from the Winter Olympics to break down the biggest sports controversies of the past week, from viral outrage cycles to political optics, and what they reveal about media literacy in the age of social media. We unpack how misinformation spreads during global sporting events, why certain Olympic moments get amplified (and others distorted), and why it's critical to separate fact from narrative, especially when politics, gender, and nationalism collide. Then we shift to what's happening on the ice. Team USA women's hockey has been dominant, but what does this moment actually mean for the long-term growth of women's ice hockey? We analyze: The impact of the Professional Women's Hockey League (PWHL) How consistent elite competition is changing development pipelines Why league infrastructure, not just Olympic hype, sustains momentum What women's hockey gets right that men's leagues could learn from This episode connects breaking sports controversies, media accountability, and the evolution of women's sports, especially ice hockey, into one essential conversation. Should women demand employers to pay MORE to cover their beauty costs? Women are paying out of pocket to be seen as credible, competent, and professional at work. Hair. Skin. Clothes. Time. Money. Face lifts. All of it. Not to mention the societal expectation that women should remain youthful, polished, and "camera-ready" especially when in a visible position whether it's in leadership, on stage, or otherwise. Spicy, right? In this episode, I sit down with Eleanor Beaton, powerhouse CEO and founder of Safi Media, to talk about why these costs are not vapid vanity, but part of the infrastructure of expectation and what is required to stay relevant, and why pretending otherwise keeps women underpaid and exhausted.Listen, I pushed back HARD on how outrageous this idea is - but also, WHAT IF it could be a way forward for us as women? We chat about the economics of beauty standards, ageism in the workplace, and why professional women are stuck absorbing costs, financial and emotional, just to appear relevant and polished.Eleanor peels back the curtain on why grooming, wardrobe upgrades, and even the ruthless battle against gray hair aren't just personal choices, they're part of a larger social infrastructure expected from women in high-visibility roles. We get real about the financial toll (think: $20,000+ a year!) and the invisible expectations that men just don't face. If you're an entrepreneur, founder, or ambitious woman in a corporate setting, you'll learn why it's time to stop treating these “upkeep” expenses as shameful and start seeing them as legitimate business investments. We also talk about negotiating for the true cost of visibility, dismantling patriarchal narratives, finding the right communities for support and strategic advice, and why transparency and discernment are superpowers for the next generation of female leaders. This episode isn't just a conversation, it's an invitation to step up, get strategic, and redefine what it means to show up powerfully in a culture that's overdue for a change. We talk about:The hidden costs of female professional visibilitySocietal beauty standards and agingThe gender wage gap and structural imbalancesNegotiating compensation as infrastructureEmotional impact of relevance and confidenceThe power of networks and access to informationDiscernment in choosing professional communitiesTimestamps:00:00 Choosing Gray: A Personal Choice03:11 Blind Spots and Relevance08:16 Beauty Expenses and Tax Challenges10:32 Accounting for Appearance Costs13:03 Gender Stereotypes and Ageism Debate19:07 Negotiating Workplace Costs20:47 Negotiation Tips for Employment Logistics26:24 Confident Women in Daily Life29:36 Empowering Women Entrepreneurs33:29 Structuring Success for Entrepreneurs35:18 Discernment and Evolving StandardsPrefer watching on YouTube? https://youtu.be/crrVBwgUfSo—---------------------------------------------------------To Connect With Eleanor:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/eleanorbeaton/Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/eleanorbeaton/Website: https://eleanorbeaton.com/To Connect With Me:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/allison__hareLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/allisonhare/Website: https://allisonhare.comBook a free clarity call with Allison: https://allisonhare.com/freecall Be sure to rate, review, and follow this podcast on your player and also, connect with me IRL for more goodness and life-changing stuff.Schedule a FREE podcast clarity call with me - Your future audience is out there. Like magic, the sorcery of stories is this: they help each of us to be seen and heard, to understand and be understood. As the eldest of 7 children, an incest survivor, nurse, attorney, litigation consultant, and professional storyteller I had to teach myself again and again how to be seen, heard, understood, and listened to. How did I do that? I learned to tell my personal and professional stories in my own words with my own values in my own way. Always it was a now-or- never chance to become a stubbornly courageous speaker willing to give life to my authentic voice.  My mission is language. Language is power. Your stories, visions, ideas, and messages are powerful; but only if they are brought to life. What if you could tell the story that advances your business, creates clarity in life choices, persuades your clients, or produces effective results from your ideas?CTA: If you have a desire to say what you mean and mean what you say, come as you are and change inside Quarter Moon Story Arts.Book a Discovery Call and get your story going => Email me =>  Info@quartemoonstoryarts.netYou're always welcome: "Come for the stories - Stay for the magic!" How do you build a professional women's hockey league from the ground up — and convince the sport's best players, skeptical investors, and hungry fans that this time it's built to last? CBC Sports journalist Karissa Donkin, author of "Breakaway: The PWHL and the Women Who Changed the Game," helps us dive into the backstory of the incredible Professional Women's Hockey League. Donkin traces the roots of the PWHL back to the collapse of the Canadian Women's Hockey League in 2019 and the rise of the Professional Women's Hockey Players' Association, whose “Dream Gap” tours kept women's hockey in the spotlight when no stable league existed. She also unpacks the complicated legacy of North American professional women's leagues: the original National Women's Hockey League (1999–2007), and the later NWHL launched in 2015 — the first U.S.-based league to pay salaries — which eventually rebranded as the Premier Hockey Federation (PHF). The overlap of these leagues, combined with the PWHPA's touring circuit, splintered talent and divided attention, but it also highlighted what was missing: a single, unified, and financially sustainable league. These years of struggle, advocacy, and experimentation ultimately set the stage for the PWHL's 2023 launch. We'll explore how the Mark Walter Group, Billie Jean King, and a coalition of powerful allies turned that vision into reality, and why the league's first collective bargaining agreement matters so much for players seeking true professional standards. Donkin also unpacks the drama and exhilaration of the inaugural 2024 season — from record-breaking crowds to the intensity of Boston–Montreal showdowns — and explains how the league is balancing rapid growth with the need for long-term sustainability. Finally, we look ahead: what does expansion to markets like Vancouver and Seattle mean for the league's future? How will the PWHL navigate the ongoing battles for sponsorship, broadcast exposure, and cultural relevance in a crowded sports marketplace? And most importantly, how will the next generation of girls growing up with the PWHL on TV — and in their hometown arenas — reshape what professional hockey looks like in North America? + + +   SUPPORT THE SHOW:  Buy Us a Coffee: https://ko-fi.com/goodseatsstillavailable The "Good Seats" Store: https://www.teepublic.com/?ref_id=35106 BUY THE BOOK (AND SUPPORT THE SHOW!): "Breakaway: The PWHL and the Women Who Changed the Game": https://amzn.to/3IL81bu SPONSOR THANKS (AND SUPPORT THE SHOW!):  Old School Shirts.com (10% off promo code: GOODSEATS): https://oldschoolshirts.com/goodseats Royal Retros (10% off promo code: SEATS): https://www.503-sports.com?aff=2 FIND AND FOLLOW: Linktree: https://linktr.ee/GoodSeatsStillAvailable Web: https://goodseatsstillavailable.com/ Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/goodseatsstillavailable.com X/Twitter: https://twitter.com/GoodSeatsStill YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@goodseatsstillavailable Threads: https://www.threads.net/@goodseatsstillavailable Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/goodseatsstillavailable/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/GoodSeatsStillAvailable/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/good-seats-still-available/
