From tween garage band beginnings to chart-topping success and a shocking behind-the-scenes story that reads like a Hollywood script, Tommy James, of Tommy James & the Shondells, joins Media Path to share dishy details about his remarkable journey while creating some of the most enduring hits of a generation!Tommy traces his musical roots back to age 12, when he formed his first band, The Echoes, with fellow classmates, a group that would eventually evolve into The Shondells.A job at a local record shop gave him an early education in the retail side of music, and by 14, he was recording his first single. That song, “Hanky Panky,” took on a life of its own when a Pittsburgh DJ began spinning it. From there, it quickly became the biggest record the city had ever seen and launched Tommy's career overnight. One problem: No Shondells. They had all moved on to college, families and other careers. Tommy club crawled to find Pittsburgh band, The Raconteurs who quickly agreed to become The Shondells. That success led Tommy to shop the record for a deal in New York City. Every top label wanted Tommy. One problem: They had all received a menacing phone call from mobbed up Morris Levy of Roulette Records. Tommy's dysfunctional mob family relationship provided him with an interesting exchange. He enjoyed complete creative control in the studio, leading to the hits, I Think We're Alone Now, Mony Tony, Crystal Blue Persuasion and Crimson and Clover… but… Morris pocketed most of Tommy's money and Roulette's Genovese Family ties kept The Shondells cranking out hits and selling over 110 million records without complaint. Our conversation explores the stark contrast between the band's bright, infectious music and the darker realities unfolding behind the scenes, which included ominous intimidation and physical threats.Despite the challenges, Tommy credits that time with giving him an invaluable education in the inner workings of the industry, from production to publishing, lessons that have informed him throughout his career. Today, he brings that rich perspective to his SiriusXM 60s channel radio show, called Gettin' Together, where he shares the stories behind the songs, offering context only culled from a performer who lived it.He also reflects on writing his memoir, Me, the Mob, and the Music, which he would only publish after the funeral of Vinnie “The Chin” Gigante, the last Genovese Family mobster. Tommy also shares early details about his story's upcoming adaptation into a mini-series.Plus we've got an IMDB Roulette round that's immersed in the era when variety shows brought teenage audiences their first peek at the real life musicians spinning around their record players! In current media recommendations: Marty: Life Is Short on Netflix andHazardous History with Henry Winkler on The History Channel and HuluPath Points of Interest:Tommy JamesTommy James on WikiMe, The Mob and the Music: One Helluva Ride with Tommy James and The Shondells.by Tommy James with Martin FitzpatrickTommy James Tour DatesTommy James on FacebookTommy James on YoutubeTommy James on InstagramHazardous History with Henry Winkler

From surviving a near‑fatal collapse on stage in 1970 to still performing 60 years later, his journey is a testament to resilience, gratitude, and the eternal pulse of a song that never ages.Get ready for a deep‑dive into iconic tunes, untold industry secrets, and the undying spirit of a musician who still feels most alive on stage. It's not intentional but we tend to talk about people, places and products that are already out there, so for our penultimate episode of the season, we're flipping that and going for things that may not immediately be on your radar. But should be.Like Harp of Darkness, a black Irish whiskey and Atheres Spirits, a boutique range of botanical amaro and liqueurs distilled in Industrial City, New York.Botanicals are also front and centre of Danny Childs inspiring book 'Slow Drinks', while top-notch music (live and vinyl) and no-nonsense classic cocktails are at the core of the deliciously low key, high value Bird's in New York. And we're thrilled to welcome Denny Kallivoka and Dimitris Alpanezos, the bright minds behind Vision, a pioneering, much needed platform they've created to make hospitality spaces more inclusive for people who are blind or partially sighted. For more from The Cocktail Lovers, visit thecocktaillovers.comFor the products featured in this episode, see websites below:What we're drinking:The Truly British Hanky Panky40ml Cygnet 22 Dry Welsh Gin40ml Asterley Bros Sweet Vermouth7ml Asterley Bros Britannica London FernetOrange coin to garnishMethod:Chill Martini glasses. A legend to the legends! Jeff Barry was named one of Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Songwriters of All Time and is inducted into both the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. "Tell Laura I Love Her." "Da Doo Ron Ron," "Then He Kissed Me," "Be My Baby," "(Christmas) Baby Please Come Home," "Chapel of Love," "River Deep - Mountain High," "Doo Wah Diddy," "Leader of the Pack," "Hanky Panky," "Sugar, Sugar," "I Honestly Love You." It's mind boggling! PART ONE Paul and Scott chat about crossing a new friendship milestone and the long road to getting to speak with the unbelievably cool Jeff Barry. PART TWO Our in-depth interview with Jeff BarryABOUT JEFF BARRY Jeff Barry began his career as a recording artist for RCA and Decca Records, but attracted more attention for his original songs. After scoring pop hits with “Tell Laura I Love Her” and Sam Cooke's recording of “Teenage Sonata” in 1960, Jeff joined forces with Ellie Greenwich and Phil Spector to pen such classics as “Da Doo Ron Ron,” “Then He Kissed Me,” “Be My Baby,” “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home),” “Chapel of Love,” and “River Deep – Mountain High.” Greenwich and Barry also recorded together as the Raindrops while continuing to find success with other artists, including landing number one hits with “Doo Wah Diddy Diddy,” “Leader of the Pack,” and the Tommy James and the Shondells recording of “Hanky Panky.” Rolling Stone magazine's 2004 list of the “500 Greatest Rock Songs” included six Barry-Greenwich compositions, more than any other non-performing songwriting team. As a producer, Barry helmed such hits as “Cherry, Cherry” by Neil Diamond and “I'm a Believer” by The Monkees. After parting ways with Greenwich, Jeff began writing with Andy Kim, with whom he had the biggest hit of 1969 when he co-wrote and produced “Sugar, Sugar” by the fictional cartoon band The Archies. A few years later, Jeff was nominated for the Song of the Year Grammy for Olivia Newton John's 1974 chart-topping recording of “I Honestly Love You.” Additionally, he found success on the country charts in the 1970s and ‘80s with top 5 singles such as “Out of Hand,” recorded by Gary Stewart” and “Lie to You For Your Love,” recorded by the Bellamy Brothers. Never bound by genre categories, he also enjoyed top 5 R&B successes in those decades with songs such as “Heavy Makes You Happy” for the Staple Singers and “The Last Time I Made Love,” a song he wrote with Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil that was recorded by Joyce Kennedy and Jeffrey Osborne. In addition to writing more than 50 different songs that have reached the top 40 on the Billboard charts, Jeff penned the theme songs for TV shows such as One Day at a Time (“This Is It”), The Jeffersons (“Movin' on Up”), and Family Ties (“Without Us”). In 2019 he and writing partner Clarence Jey composed and wrote songs for the animated Nickelodeon show Lego City Adventures. Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich are in the top 20 of Rolling Stone's list of the 100 Greatest Songwriters of All Time and were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2010. Jeff has received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Academy of Songwriters and was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. We are back for our FIFTH SEASON!!! Can you believe that we've been at this for five years now??? I know we can't, but we have 58 episodes where we've paired pot with 117 movies as evidence here. Our earliest film was Georges Méliès' "The Infernal Caudron" from 1903, and our most recent is "Hanky Panky" from 2023. That's getting up on three years old now? Does that count as vintage in tubi years? But enough of our unexpected achievements. We've got our 59th episode right here, and with Valentine's Day just around the corner, we're exploring human sexuality with a pair of films that Philena describes as "more gross than romantic." Everything about BOB & CAROL & TED & ALICE (1969) screams the 60s, from Robert Culp in love beads right down to a Burt Bacharach song closing it out, but our crew found it's definitely worth a look as so many people are trying out polyamory with the same level of awkward as our film's titular couple. Plus Robert Culp and Natalie Wood smoke weed like pros Definitely stay tuned for Philena's title for a queer remake that she should really get crackin' on writing! The film also stars Ryan Cannon and Elliot Gould. How is it that Gould is making his Old Movies for Young Stoners debut just now??? BOB & CAROL & TED & ALICE is streaming on the Criterion and Roku Channels. Since we featured one of Mexico's most spectacularly-bad films in our last episode with the baffling SANTA CLAUS (1959), Bob felt it was time we explored the Golden Age of Mexican Cinema (1930-1960) with VICTIMS OF SIN (1951), a prime example of the Rumberas genre, a unique combination of musical, noir and intense melodrama. In fact, the emotions may have burned a bit too hot for some of our hosts. Ninón Sevilla is a dancer at the Club Changoo in Mexico City whose life goes to hell after she rescues a baby from a trash can. Directed by the great Emilio Fernández who was the John Huston or Kurosawa of Mexico's Golden Age, but is best known to gringos for playing the Mexican warlord Mapache in Sam Peckinpah's THE WILD BUNCH (1969). Legend also has it that Fernández was the sculptor's model for the Oscar statuette when he was chilling with Dolores del Río in Hollywood after he was a part of a failed rebellion in Mexico and had to flee to the United States for a while. The contrast of light and shadows of Gabriel Figueroa's cinematography are the equal of anything seen in the best American noirs. VICTIMS OF SIN is now streaming on Criterion Channel. Cory, Bob and Greg begin the show by talking about the pending closures of The Bottom of the Hill and Thee Parkside, two San Francisco punk clubs that they have all played and see a lot of shows at. The conversation brings up the Canadian rock god Thor, which is always welcome. Bottom of the Hill closes at the end of 2026, so please check out a show or ten there while you still can. https://www.bottomofthehill.com/calendar.html And Philena was not one of the influencers invited to screenings of the "Wuthering Heights," which really seems like an oversight by the Warner Bros publicity team if you ask us. Hey movie PR people, contact us at oldmoviesforyoungstoners@gmail.com and invite Philena to your premieres! She's got the power! Join us in March for our CHILDHOOD TRAUMA episode with THE 5,000 FINGERS OF DR. T (1953) and THE BOY WITH GREEN HAIR (1948). Subscribe on your preferred podcast app so you don't miss it. On this week's A Breath of Fresh Air, Sandy welcomes a man whose songs have woven themselves into the fabric of several generations. Tommy James, the legendary frontman of Tommy James & The Shondells, joins us for a deep, revealing conversation about the highs, the heartbreaks and the astonishing twists behind one of the most successful hit-making careers of the 1960s and beyond.Tommy's journey is the kind of story Hollywood couldn't invent — though they're certainly trying, with his bestselling memoir Me, the Mob and the Music currently being adapted for the big screen. He takes us right back to his childhood in Niles, Michigan, where loving rock 'n' roll meant picking up a guitar, forming a band and hoping the magic would follow. It did — but not in any way Tommy expected. He talks us through the incredible moment when Hanky Panky, a forgotten B-side recorded years earlier, suddenly blew up in Pittsburgh after a bootlegger pressed tens of thousands of copies. One minute Tommy was playing small clubs; the next he and his band were national chart-toppers. That whirlwind success swept him straight into the arms of Roulette Records — a label run by the charming but notoriously dangerous Morris Levy, a man later revealed to have deep ties to the Genovese crime family. Tommy opens up about the complicated relationship that followed: the protection, the pressure, the creative freedom, and the financial exploitation that kept millions of dollars out of his hands. In this wonderfully open chat, Tommy revisits the creation of the monster hits that still light up dance floors today. He tells Sandy how I Think We're Alone Now reinvented the band's sound, how a flashing neon sign inspired the name for Mony Mony, and how Crimson and Clover marked a bold new chapter in studio experimentation — a leap that helped Tommy move from AM pop dominance to the era of FM album rock. He describes the excitement of breaking musical ground, the thrill of hearing his songs explode on radio, and the constant sense of danger swirling around Roulette's offices.Sandy and Tommy also explore the cultural shifts that shaped his era: the rise of psychedelia, the breakup of The Shondells, and the changing landscape of the record business as artists were suddenly expected to deliver albums with artistic depth, not just hit singles. He recalls touring America in the late '60s, his surprising involvement in Hubert Humphrey's presidential campaign, and the little-known story of why he turned down Woodstock — a decision that has fascinated fans for decades.Today, Tommy remains as passionate and creative as ever. With new music, a thriving fan base, and an extraordinary life story headed for film adaptation, he's enjoying a well-deserved renaissance. His music still pulses through movies, TV, commercials and global radio, connecting across generations and reminding listeners why these songs have never stopped mattering. This episode is a joyful, eye-opening, often jaw-dropping journey through one of the most colourful careers in rock 'n' roll. If you love the artists who shaped the soundtrack of our lives — the stars of the '60s, '70s and '80s — then settle in. Tommy James has stories you'll be telling your friends for days.

Brisa Carleton joins Carol Fitzgerald to talk about her debut novel, LAST CALL AT THE SAVOY, which is a Bookreporter Bets On selection. The inspiration for the book came when Brisa was visiting The Savoy Hotel in London more than a decade ago. She saw a footnote about Ada Coleman in a cocktail menu and was surprised that so little information existed about her. Ada was a prominent mixologist at the hotel from 1903 to 1925, and she invented many cocktails, including the "Hanky Panky." Brisa discusses writing a dual timeline for the book: the historical story about Ada and the modern one featuring Cinnamon Scott, an aspiring New York writer who travels to London to help her pregnant sister, Rosemary, at The Savoy. An award-winning Broadway producer with three Tony wins to her credit, Brisa also talks about her role as a producer and how it differs from being a writer. Tonight we're chatting with Nick Roth, writer and co-director of the bloody horror comedy Hanky Panky, which just came out on Apple TV, Amazon Prime, and Google Play, and which Kristy Puchko of Mashable recently called a "gleefully absurd avalanche of silliness," and which a random person on Letterboxd described as "an extremely dumb movie that I enjoyed immensely." We also talk about the WGA strike and getting Hollywood back to work-- and what you can do to create your own projects when you need to.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/castle-of-horror-podcast--4268760/support.

Nick wrote and co-directed the feature comedy Hanky Panky, which took home the Grand Jury Awards for Best Feature Film – Comedy and Best Cast Performance – Feature Film at Film Invasion Los Angeles in 2024. Happy Thursday, Cinema Peeps! I'm thrilled that today you'll be learning about filmmaker Nick Roth. Nick wrote and co-directed the feature comedy Hanky Panky, which happened to take home the Grand Jury Awards for Best Feature Film – Comedy and Best Cast Performance – Feature Film at Film Invasion Los Angeles in 2024. When I first saw Hanky Panky, I had one thought. “The people who made this film are the BEST PEOPLE.” This ensemble comedy sincerely takes me back to the glory days of Monty Python and Kids In The Hall movies, where a group of smart, funny people do their best to create something that nobody has seen before. Therefore you should accept the challenge to go to your favorite place to buy/rent films and watch Hanky Panky. Nick is of the opinion that the film is perfectly fine, maybe even better, on the AVOD platforms that throw ads into the film at random moments. Personally, I think you should rent it on an ad free platform. Is that enough setup? I think so! Except that you can go to @hankypankymovie to get weblink and more! _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Discover Indie Film Website – Instagram – Facebook – X/Twitter The INDIE Channel The INDIE Channel Website – Instagram – Facebook – X/Twitter – TikTok

A recent study, based on data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), has found that women who rarely engage in sexual activity have a 70% higher risk of dying compared to those who have sex at least once per week. Additionally, individuals with depression who had sex much less than once per week had a 197% higher risk of dying than those who had sex around once per week. These findings were published in the Journal of Psychosexual Health. Frequent sex has been shown to offer numerous health benefits. It helps reduce stress and improve mood through the release of endorphins and oxytocin. It can also boost the immune system, making the body more resistant to infections and illnesses. Regular sexual activity promotes cardiovascular health by increasing heart rate and circulation. It enhances sleep quality due to the release of the hormone prolactin, which is associated with relaxation. Frequent sex can also improve intimacy and strengthen relationships, contributing to overall emotional well-being. In this episode, Dr. Susan Oakley & Holly want to know do you: Schedule or Sizzle? How often do you get frisky? A) Daily B) A few times a week C) Weekly D) A few times a month E) Rarely/Never Tune in for some fun and fabulous insights. Thank you, ladies, for listening. Always feel free to ask Dr. Oakley any women's health questions at any time. Please send in your comments, questions, and suggestions for future topics at TheLadyBodPod@gmail.com.
