Even the steadfastly Imperial Americans are familiar with metric measurements of distance, volume, and temperature; but alas, the metric French Republican calendar has fallen by the wayside. Consisting of 12 months of exactly 30 days each (3 10-day weeks) with 5 (or 6, for leap years) interstitial days called "complementary days." I mean, you couldn't call them holidays what with your trying to purge religious influence on your calendar! In a fun twist, each of the 360 normal days, instead of Saint's Days, was meant to commemorate the "treasures of the rural economy." Like horseradish day (Frimaire 12), or rabbit day (Nivôse 15). Even more exotic was metric time, and don't get me started on that.Games Played Last Week:01:31 -Tobago: Volcano (Bruce Allen, Zoch Verlag, 2020)03:50 -Ascension Tactics: Miniatures Deckbuilding Game (Justin Gary & Ryan Sutherland, Stone Blade Entertainment, 2021)06:18 -Uprising: Curse of the Last Emperor (Cornelius Cremin, Pawel Mazur, & Dirk Sommer, Nemesis.Games, 2021)08:50 -Resist! MARCUS BIGNEYHere comes Fantasy Flight's body, mourned by Michael Walker: who, though he had no hand in its death, shall receivethe benefit of its dying, a place in thehobby; as which of you shall not? WALKERFriends, gamers, hobbyists, lend me your ears;I come to bury Fantasy Flight, not to praise it.The evil that publishers do lives after them; The good is oft interred with their bones; So let it be with Fantasy Flight. The noble BigneyHath told you FFG was ambitious:If it were so, it was a grievous fault,And grievously hath FFG answer'd it.Here, under leave of Bigney and the rest--For Bigney is an honourable man;So are they all, all honourable men--Come I to speak in FFG's funeral. It was my friend, faithful and just to me:But Bigney says it was ambitious; And Bigney is an honourable man.It hath published many games home to RomeWhose playing did the gaming public thrill:Did this in FFG seem ambitious? When that the games were broken, FFG hath wept:Ambition should be made of sterner stuff:Yet Bigney says it was ambitious; And Bigney is an honourable man.I speak not to disprove what Bigney spoke,But here I am to speak what I do know. You all did love it once, not without cause:What cause withholds you then, to mourn for it?O judgment! thou art fled to brutish beasts,And men have lost their reason. Bear with me;My heart is in the coffin box there with expansions,And I must pause till it come back to me.01:32 AYURIS: Imperial 2030 (Mac Gerdts, PD-Verlag, 2009)Games Played Last Week:04:08 -Yokohama (Hisashi Hayashi, Tasty Minstrel Games, 2016)07:54 -Vampire Queen (Wolfgang Kramer, Schmidt Spiele, 2016)11:40 -Regicide (Paul Abrahams, Luke Badger, & Andy Richdale, Badgers from Mars, 2020)12:13 -Pickomino Deluxe (Reiner Knizia, Zoch Verlag, 2018)14:25 -Equinox (Reiner Knizia, Plan B Games, 2021)18:33 -Rhino Hero (Scott Frisco & Steven Strumpf, HABA, 2011)18:33 -Rhino Hero: Super Battle (Scott Frisco & Steven Strumpf, HABA, 2017)21:50 -The Search for Planet X (Matthew O'Malley & Ben Rosset, Renegade Game Studios, 2020)23:15 -Descent: Legends in the Dark (Kara Centell-Dunk & Nathan I. Welcome to spooktacular October episodes! This week, we're delving deep into the very best of the best in mystery games, featuring our Top 10.  Before we dive in, though, make sure you take the time to enter our October contest - tell us your top 20 games and be entered for a chance to win one of the games on the final top 20 listener games list.  https://gleam.io/jwEDM/your-top-20-board-games-of-all-time First up on the episode, we asked our question of the week, "is there a set time each year you review and cull your collection, or is it more spontaneous (or for the hoarders among us, myself included, do you put it off indefinitely)?" For our acquisition disorders this week, Anthony is looking at the newest game from Alexander Pfister, Blackout: Hong Kong and Chris looks at Concordia Venus, a new spin on the Mac Gerdts modern classic.  At the Table, Anthony reviews both the new version of Manhattan, recently rereleased with beautiful new components, as well as CMON's Way of the Panda, a panda-filled take on worker placement mechanics. Chris then reviews Merlin with its current Queenie expansions and the Palace of Mad King Ludwig.  Finally, the guys look at their top 10 mystery games, with some spooky, some super hard, and some just plain perfect for this time of year.  Question of the Week: 4:48 Acquisition Disorders: 9:23 Manhattan Review:14:23 Way of the Panda Review: 18:45 Merlin Review: 26:54 Palace of Mad King Ludwig Review: 32:37 Top 10 Mystery Games:38:09 If you haven’t yet, be sure to connect with us on Facebook (www.facebook.com/boardgamersanonymous), Twitter (http://twitter.com/bgapodcast), and on our website (www.boardgamersanonymous.com).
