Ever wonder what it takes to write a hit song? Try writing 84 of them. Ashley Gorley has accomplished what many thought impossible – becoming the most successful commercial songwriter of all time, surpassing even Paul McCartney's legendary catalog. This record-breaking achievement didn't happen overnight; it was built on years of dedication, countless hours in writing rooms, and an unmatched work ethic. From his humble beginnings making DJ remixes and blending acapellas with different musical backings, Gorley developed a versatile approach that would later serve him across multiple genres. While Nashville's country music scene became his primary canvas, his talents have extended far beyond, crafting hits for artists ranging from Jason Aldean and Morgan Wallen to Bon Jovi and even earning a Grammy nomination with Weezer. What separates Gorley from other songwriters? Perhaps it's his unique process – often writing without touching an instrument, focusing purely on melody and lyrics before anything else. Or maybe it's his remarkable ability to sense a hit, though he admits being surprised when experimental songs like "That's My Kind of Night" and "T-Shirt" became massive successes. More likely, it's his philosophy of originality: "Don't write B versions of what's already out there... what can you bring to the table that we don't already have?"Despite his professional triumphs, Gorley's priorities remain firmly rooted in faith and family. Rather than chasing material possessions, he's invested his success in experiences, taking his children on meaningful trips around the world and mentoring the next generation of songwriters. Through his publishing company, he's helped foster another 50 number one hits beyond his personal catalog. For aspiring writers, his advice is both encouraging and sobering: find your creative community, be open to criticism, and prepare for rejection. The path isn't easy – Gorley wrote for seven years before his first hit – but for those willing to put in the work and offer something unique, Nashville still offers that rare opportunity where a great song can be recorded simply because someone loves it.The Try That in a Small Town Podcast is powered by e|spaces! Hey friends! We are back with another episode of Stories Behind the Songs and this week we sit down with Chris DeStefano! Chris has written songs for so many amazing artists like Luke Bryan, Chase Rice, Dan and Shay, Carrie Underwood, Chris Young, Morgan Evans, Miranda Lambert, Jason Aldean, Rascal Flatts, Jake Owen, Thomas Rhett, Jason Mraz – JUST to name a few... I mean the list goes on and on. Chris is not only an incredible writer, but he is an amazing guitar player and has a great voice... If you've never seen him live or play at the Listening Room, you are going to hear exactly what I mean later in this episode when he plays a couple of his songs... Chris came to Nashville from New Jersey back in 2013 and started to hit the ground running with his first write in town turning into a cut for Eli Young Band. Chris has been dedicated to his music since the beginning spending 10 – 12 hours a day learning guitar and traveling with his choir group growing up... Moving to Nashville was a no brainer for him. We cover topics like the difference between the songwriting community in Nashville and LA, a deep dive into several of his cuts including “Something in the Water” and “Good Girl” for Carrie Underwood, “I Feel Like Dancing” for Jason Mraz, “Rewind” for Rascal Flatts, and his cut for Chris Young - “End of a Bar”. Chris takes us into the writer's room with Carrie Underwood and Chris Young – you're going to feel like you were there with them that day – these are incredible stories. We also touch on his publishing company “Winsongs” and Chris discusses how he started it and how it has taken off since, with writers like Emily Shackleton, Jason Duke, and Eric Van Houten on the roster – and all of them have found their way on this podcast. Give Chris a follow in the liner notes below to stay up to date and give us a follow if you enjoyed the episode – we are able to sit down with amazing songwriters and artists thanks to your support!

She's My Kind of Girl". It's Dry January time for a lot of people. What better time to dive into the world of sobriety influencers. Finding sobriety is different for everyone. It's a journey. These days Instagram and TikTok have become a big part of getting sober.Suzanne Warye started out as an influencer on her page @MyKindOfSweet by posting her workouts and her outfits. When she experienced post-partum depression she was shockingly honest with her audience about how hard it was. The response was so positive that she began to open up about something that is often even more taboo—sobriety. She didn't realize just how many people needed to hear about how she left alcohol behind. Now, @MyKindofSweet has evolved into a place where she shares the bright side of sobriety, and spreads the news that you don't have to wait for rock bottom in order to evaluate your relationship with alcohol. She also shares excellent sweaters! This episode is the first in our series of January renewal episodes! We talk a lot here about the negative impact of influencers, but this month I want us to focus on how we can use social for the things we want to accomplish. For more Under the Influence (transcripts, interviews, show notes and pics) follow our substack, Over the Influence. You can follow My Kind of Sweet Here. And as always, pre-order the Sicilian Inheritance here.

Girls Gone Hallmark is a twice-weekly Hallmark review podcast. Today, Megan and Wendy, review the Lacey Chabert sequel "Haul Out the Holly: Lit Up." With its excellent ensemble cast and razor-sharp dialogue, could this sequel sleigh the first movie? Download and listen now! About Haul Out the Holly: Lit Up Director - Maclain Nelson - His 14 directing credits include this year's "A Heidelberg Holiday" and of course the OG "Haul Out the Holly." Writer - Chris Sey  - With only 6 credits, Christopher has only written one previous Hallmark movie, "You're Bacon Me Crazy." He was not the writer on the first "Haul out the Holly." Christopher Sey's incredible efforts during the pandemic. While researching him, I learned that his wife is an ER doc at a hospital in Los Angeles. Along with some friends, he founded a non-profit called DINE ONE ONE that not only provided meals for healthcare workers, but also supported local restaurants.  "Haul out the Holly: Lit Up" was filmed in Utah in September 2023. Lacey Chabert (Emily) - With 175 acting credits it's safe to say Lacey is more than just the queen of Christmas. She also appeared in "A Merry Scottish Christmas" and "The Dancing Detective" this year in addition to reprising her role as Gretchen Werner's in a Walmart Black Friday commercial. Wes Brown (Jared) His 48 acting credits include a ton of Hallmark, but believe it or not we've only reviewed two of his movies here on GGH. Wes dropped his Christmas Jazz album this year titled "My Kind of Christmas." Stephen Tobolowsky (Ned) - Stephen wins the prize for most acting credits of an Actor Appearing on Hallmark, if such a prize exists, with 290 credits. What hasn't he been in? He was a series regular on "The Goldbergs," "One Day at a Time," "Californication," "Silicon Valley" and "Heroes" and we're glad to have him on Hallmark. Related Podcast Episode: Girls Gone Hallmark reviews the original "Haul Out the Holly" from 2022. Melissa Peterman (Pamela) Melissa always lights up the screen in any role among her 36 acting credits. She appeared in "Baby Daddy" on Netflix and of course her role as Barbara Jean on "Reba" is iconic.  Ellen Travolta (Mary Louise) - yes, that Travolta! She has 52 acting credits and appeared in series like "Charles in Charge" and "Joani loves Chachi." In addition to reprising her role as Mary Louise on "Haul Out the Holly," she's reprising a 30 year old role on "General Hospital" as Gloria Cerullo coming up soon. Jennifer Aspen (Jane Johnson). She has 84 acting credits including 44 episodes as Daphne in the series "Party of Five" (with Lacey Chabert). Seth Morris (Joe Johnson). He doesn't have as many acting credits as Stephen Tobolowsky, but with 138 the dude has been in some stuff. Including, "The Big Leap" (a FOX one-season series), HBO's "Veep," Netflix's "Love," "The Good Place," "Parks and Rec," "The League" and so much more.  We got a quick cameo from Eric Mabius who plays Allan, Pamela's husband. Who Was in Haul Out the Holly: Lit Up? Peter Jacobson (Albert) Laura Wardle (Belinda) Kenneth Cummins (Jimmy Johnson) Eliza Hayes Maher (Jessica) Carrie Morgan (Gail) Walter Platz (Bob) Lila Clark (Nicole) Charlotte Kay Witt (Helen)

Please think about your answers while listening to country artists we're loving right now (and Post Malone while you're at it). On country music having a moment: Vulture and Rolling Stone. Here are some artists (and their songs!) to dig into: Luke Combs (“When It Rains It Pours” and his cover of “Fast Car”), Zach Bryan ("I Remember Everything" featuring Kacey Musgraves, “Something in the Orange,” and his All My Homies Hate Ticketmaster live album), Kane Brown (“Nothing Compares to You” with Mickey Guyton), Midland (“Cheatin' Songs” and “Burn Out”), Maren Morris (“The Bones,” “My Church,” and “Rich—and this Diary of a Song on her pop hit “The Middle” and everything The Highwomen), Kelsea Ballerini (“If You Go Down (I'm Goin' Down Too),” “Hole in the Bottle,” and a special shoutout to her CMT Awards performance), Mickey Guyton (“All American” and “Black Like Me”—she was a judge on the Apple TV show My Kind of Country, too) Lainey Wilson (“Things a Man Oughta Know,” “Heart Like a Truck” and “Straight Up Sideways”), Hailey Whitters (“Everything She Ain't” and “I'm In Love”), and Brooke Eden (“Sunroof”—video with her then-gf, now wife!).For further women-in-country reading, we re-recommend Her Country by Marissa R. Ross. An artist we hope doesn't disappoint us: Post Malone.Let us know what music you're loving right now at 833-632-5463, podcast@athingortwohq.com, @athingortwohq, or our Geneva!Find more weeknight dinner recipes at Pillsbury.com. He may have played 350 games of AFL - but as Eddie's wife always reminds him - his job is only just beginning… for his kids, and for his people. Eddie, with his wife Anna, have 5 young children, so pre-season training pales in comparison to the high contact sport of dadding that many kids.  His lunch box game is elite!  But as Hame learns in this fascinating chat, for Eddie, supporting a family is linked inextricably with a supportive community. Growing up playing at his grandfather's house, Eddie explains how he began learning his dadding skills from a young age, and how now in the suburbs of Melbourne he is fostering community not only for his kids, but for many of the young indigenous footballers that leave behind their support structures to play AFL. The benefits are huge, and it's not just because of the extra babysitting! Eddie might be a dad to 5, but he is also a role model to thousands, and the way he takes it all in his stride with so much grace and humility is pretty inspiring.  He's one of the AFL's greatest small forwards of all time, kicking 640 goals and receiving Goal of the Year a record 4 times. But since retirement he has turned his energy and passion away form football to become an amazing advocate for indigenous youth, with a special focus on education and creating culturally safe spaces. He has also published two children's books, My Kind and My People, as part of his Eddie's Lil' Homies series, which excitingly looks set to become a TV show on Netflix. You can find out more about Eddie's amazing work HERE — Big thanks to our Season 2 Sponsor, HERTZ.  Just like us, Hertz are all about memory making and adventure - so if you've got a trip planned, make sure you head to hertz.com.au/hodd to take advantage of 25% off the base rate. Recently, I got to speak with composer and Grammy-Award-winning songwriter Alex Geringas, who has had the distinct pleasure of creating many songs and musical numbers for the Disney Universe. Alex is the co-writer of the song “My Kind of Monster” for the Disney Channel Original movie "Under Wraps 2", alongside the film's directors Alex Zamm and Michael Goode. The song is full of energy and celebrates letting your freak flag fly. It was performed by cast members Malachi Barton, Christian J Simon and Sophia Hammons. The movie centers around three friends Amy, Gilbert, and Marshal who band together once again to keep their beloved mummy friend Harold and his love, Rose, safe from the wrath of an evil mummy. Alex's song My Kind of Monster captures the festive feel of Halloween, and is a great companion for this family-friendly feature.   Alex's music can also be heard at Disneyland. Along with Duddy Brown, he created the theme song for Disneyland's firework show, “Wondrous Journeys,” entitled “It's Wondrous.” The lyrics are enchanting, and the music is uplifting as it crescendos to a magical climax. The song explores “the magic that we call life,” which encapsulates the Disney vibe perfectly.  Continuing his work in the Disney realm, Alex also co-wrote the theme song for "The Chicken Squad" on Disney Junior.  Additionally, he wrote the lyrics and produced the Camp Minnie theme song for "Minnie's Bow-Toons".
