The panel drops in on El Grande, the 1996 Spiel des Jahres Winner. El Grande was designed by Wolfgang Kramer and Richard Ulrich and was first published by Rio Grande Games in the US in 1995. Episode Summary: In this episode, we discussed the 1995 board game El Grande, which has been popular for almost 30 years. We discussed our experiences with the game, both online on Board Game Arena and in person, the latter we agreed is vastly superior. We then discussed the appeal of El Grande, noting its simple yet effective game mechanisms. Finally, we discussed the game in-depth and shared our personal experiences and ratings. We noted that it is a good game, and should be played face-to-face and with five players whenever possible. Visit our website and join the conversation on Discord! Chapters: (0:00:00) - Playing El Grande in Person (0:12:27) - The Appeal of El Grande (0:19:38) - Area Control in El Grande (0:31:05) - A Battle of Wits (0:42:40) - Interpreting El Grande Chapter Summaries: (0:00:50) - Playing El Grande in Person (12 Minutes) El Grande is a 1995 board game by Wolfgang Kramer and Richard Elrick. It is an area-majority game that requires players to manage their resources and successfully use power cards to get cubes onto the board and gain points. After 9 rounds, the player with the highest points is the winner. The participants discussed their experiences with the game, both on Board Game Arena and in person. They agreed that playing in person was vastly superior, as it allowed for more interpersonal interaction and tactics. (0:12:27) - The Appeal of El Grande (7 Minutes) El Grande is an example of an early Euro game and has been popular for almost 30 years. The game is a 'cube pusher' with an interesting bidding mechanism. It lacks an engaging theme or narrative, a common trait of early Euro-style games. The game mechanisms are simple but effective and have been difficult to replicate in later games. The game also has an interesting scoring system and the potential for resource manipulation. The conversation also touches on the preferences of different players, with some preferring flashier fare, and some preferring games with dinosaurs and lots of colors. (0:19:38) - Area Control in El Grande (11 Minutes) El Grande is discussed in depth and is compared to other board games of its era. The conversation focuses on the mechanisms of the game and its strategic depth, with the ability to choose between depth and width when scoring points. It is noted that there is a good amount of downtime in the game and that there is a two-step process to putting pieces on the board, which can be challenging. It is also discussed that there is an interesting decision space in the game, with players having to choose between cards and trying to read their opponents. (0:31:05) - A Battle of Wits (13 Minutes) In this section of the conversation, we wrap up our thoughts on El Grande, with the panel sharing their personal experiences and ratings. The participants discuss the components of the game, how the game plays, and how it is best played in person rather than online. They also discuss the different decision points and their importance to the game. The participants agree that it is a good game, but that it needs something to bridge the gap between the hard decision points and the waiting for someone else's turn. The Smart Car was truly out-of-the-box thinking. "Why do passenger cars all have to be the way they are?" asked some clever group of designers, and designed the minimalistic teensy Smart Car. Of course, the challenges posed by manufacturing the little thing, or driving the little thing on a highway, or walking away from a crash in the little thing, proved to be compelling arguments in favour of more traditional passenger car manufacture. What I'm saying is that sometimes the box exists for a reason, notwithstanding the virtues of experimentation. There was a time you could just stroll in a big box store in the United States and just buy a miniatures skirmish game that was actually pretty good. Sure, it didn't have analog movement or anything, but it used true line of sight and had amazing plastic terrain. So much plastic. Like, a whole lot. One the one hand, Hasbro says they're bringing HeroScape back, but on the other, ain't no way it's coming back the same as it was. Much talk of animals this week, what with wombats and mass animal harvesting in Stroganov. Mark's experience was that despite covering many hot-button issues in his medical ethics classes, the one that invariably produced the most voluble emotional responses was that of medical testing on animals. Pit Bull owners, in particular; despite there being no medical testing of the type discussed on Pit Bulls. Go figure. Join me as I chat with Judy Martin, veteran quilt designer, author, and publisher. She spent time as an editor and principal pattern designer for Quilter's Newsletter, went on to found her own publishing company, Crosley-Griffith in 1987, and is still creating new designs. We talk about quilting (no surprise there!) and Judy's approach to helping quilters make the very best quilts they can, not the most quilts they can. She has some great tips and tricks, so listen carefully! We also talk about her non-quilting life and even her and her husband's quilting board game, Quilt Show. For those of you who want to play, you can find Quilt Show at Rio Grande Games, https://www.riograndegames.com/games/quilt-show/.

Enjoy the works of Thomas Lehmann while you can! Despite the lack of player interaction of Dice Realms, Mr. Lehmann has violated local, provincial, and federal law by not supplying a solo mode. International treaty has also been flouted by the absence of a campaign. I fear he may be put in boardgame jail as a consequence. Can he build a tableau convincing enough as his defence? Welcome back to "normal" broadcasting with Episode 40 of The Last Standee podcast! In this episode, after a brief Standee Catch-up, Fen talks about Tussie Mussie, a quick, cutthroat drafting game of flowery bouquets. After it, it's without any doubt Audrey's turn to talk about miniature storage. We get back to boardgame broad talk with Dice Realms, Tom Lehmann's latest effort published by Rio Grande Games. Finally, Fen closes the episode with a rare specimen of a working 2-player social deduction game: Mantis Falls!
Preparation is important. We very carefully do our advance research here at SVWAG, but occasionally mild errors do creep in. For this week, Mark studiously crafted notes and observations on such issues as four octave vocal ranges, Nickelodeon celebrity culture, and whether boredom of a third party constitutes necessary or sufficient conditions for breaking up with one's girlfriend. Sadly for Mark, Ariana was not the Grande under discussion this week, so he was forced to begin anew.Games Played Last Week:01:12 -Clinic Deluxe Edition (Alban Viard, AVStudioGames, 2019)05:36 -Contra: The Board Game (Adam Sadler & Brady Sadler, Blacklist Games, 2022)07:08 -Furnace (Ivan Lashin, Hobby World, 2021)08:38 -Pulsar 2849 (Vladimír Suchý, CGE, 2017)10:59 -Settlement (Oleksandr Nevskiy, IGAMES, 2021)12:43 -Race for the Galaxy (Thomas Lehmann, Rio Grande Games, 2007)16:23 -Décorum (Harry Mackin, Charlie Mackin, & Drew Tenenbaum, Floodgate Games, 2022)19:49 -Terraforming Mars: Ares Expedition (Sydney Engelstein, Jacob Fryxelius, & Nick Little, Stronghold Games, 2021)23:34 -Factory 42 (Timo Multamäki, Dragon Dawn Productions, 2021)31:05 -Nidavellir: Thingvellir (Serge Laget, GRRRE Games, 2020)33:31 -Dune: Imperium--Rise of Ix (Paul Dennen, Dire Wolf, 2022)News (and why it doesn't matter):37:19 Rise & Fall by Christophe Boelinger and Ludically launching on Kickstarter in July37:54 Doomrock Ultimate on Gamefound38:46 Castles by the Sea on Kickstarter39:41 Robotech Macross DOG FIGHT follow-up: caveat emptor, perhaps best to wait and see41:05 Mark on Board Game Barrage this Thursday, April 2841:45 Check out our Patreon: www.patreon.com/svwag, new exclusive show BLOAT42:30 Upcoming Omnibus questions episode! Yes, we are but slaves to the new releases, which is why we are reviewing a fifteen-year-old game. "But that's impossible!" you reply, "No one was alive back then!" We're always on the lookout for new potential taglines here at SVWAG, as our earlier efforts "that one where the guy talks to that dude" and "we shout into a can so you don't have to" have been deemed insufficient. "We like it hard" was put forth by Walker, but the editorial staff are afraid it is apt to be misconstrued. "We weaponize children" was rejected for the opposite reason, namely that it might be correctly interpreted. Specificity tends to get us into trouble, which is why we have kept "a boardgaming podcast about boardgames" for as long as we have.1:04 AYURIS: Project: ELITE (Konstantinos Kokkinis, Marco Portugal, & Sotirios Tsantilas, CMON, 2020)Games Played Last Week:02:33 -Crusaders: Thy Will Be Done (Seth Jaffee, Tasty Minstrel, 2018)04:54 -Beyond the Sun (Dennis K. As usual, we start chatting about some of the latest stuff that we have been diggin', including the new Big Thief record, Pokémon Legends Arceus, the Batman Calzone, and Ted Lasso, and then we dive into the games. In the second episode of Quick Looks from The Long View, Elhannan Lloyd Keller and I tackle two new games. First up is Too Many Cinderellas from Grail Games. Does this new micro game bring anything new to the field? Is it just a light filler, or does it offer opportunities with clever play? Listen and find out! Next, we review Roll for the Galaxy from Rio Grande Games. Is it possible for the dice version of a game to EVEN be better than the original? Listen to hear our thoughts about this fascinating new game. Finally, I review Versailles from NSKN Games. Does this game offer anything new to the worker placement genre? Is there a rondel hidden in there? Check out the review to find out! Thanks, of course, to my sponsor www.gamesurplus.com, the Dice Tower and thanks to YOU for listening!
In this episode of The Long View, I'm pleased to be joined by first time guest Joe Sallen as we discuss his favorite game, Terra Mystica. What makes this game unique? Is the game a conflict game, or an economic game, or something else entirely? What novel ideas were presented in the game? What, if anything, does the expansion add to the experience. Find out the answers to these questions and more in this episode! As a bonus, I also review two new titles, City Hall by Tasty Minstrel Games, which can be found at the 2:06:30 mark of the episode, and Rattlebones by Rio Grande Games at the 2:25:20 mark of the episode. What makes these titles worthy of your time? Are the customizable dice of Rattlebones the next great mechanism in boardgaming? Does City Hall capture all of the backstabbing, wheeling dealing, influence peddling and application of cash that evokes the theme of politics? Listen and find out! Thanks, as always, to www.gamesurplus.com for their continued support of The Long View, thanks to The Dice Tower Network and thanks, of course, to YOU for listening! The podcast can be found here in the BGG database, through iTunes and Stitcher by subscription, or by following the link listed below.
