A professional percussionist, Mauro Refosco has performed and recorded with artists such as David Byrne, The Red Hot Chili Peppers and Thom Yorke's Atoms for Peace. After beginning his touring career in 1994 as Byrne's percussionist, he returned to NYC and joined cult creative ensemble The Lounge Lizards, playing experimental punk jazz. He formed his own band, Forro in the Dark, which has recorded four full-length albums and performed at major domestic and international festivals. He's also composed music and soundtracks for movies, television, fashion shows and Off-Broadway plays. You can now find him walking around barefoot, on Broadway, in American Utopia Born in Brazil, he found his way to NYC and ultimately the professional touring world of music. His career exploded alongside other music legends. Once he began to embrace what makes him unique and different, he found his tribe after a short stint bring a NYC-based street performer in Central Park and in the subway. He found his way to an audition for David Bryne, which resulted in an interview(!). The rest, as they say, is history. In this episode, we talk about: How his love for soccer led to his professional career as a percussionist How the album “American Utopia” made its way to Broadway as a show The difference a percussion player and a drum player Why Ted Lasso is the greatest show ever Being a NYC busker Why he decided to stop singing backing vocals for David Byrne Connect with Mauro: IG: @MauroRefosco Web: MauroRefosco.com Listen to Jomoro (and Blue Marble Sky) Get tickets for American Utopia on Broadway Connect with The Theatre Podcast: Support us on Patreon: Patreon.com/TheTheatrePodcast Twitter & Instagram: @theatre_podcast Facebook.com/OfficialTheatrePodcast TheTheatrePodcast.com Alan's personal Instagram: @alanseales Email me at feedback@thetheatrepodcast.com. A very special episode featuring Erik's new release “La Nuit Blanche”. Featuring his longtime NYC sextet (Tony Mason on drums, Jeff Hill on bass, Avi Bortnick on guitar, Mike Mcginnis on reeds, and Brian Drye on trombone) + special guest Mauro Refosco on percussion, “La Nuit Blanche” is the pianist's 8th studio album and his 1st release on Ropeadope. Erik's original compositions evoke his signature fusion of psychedelic soul, classic jazz, sonic exploration, and funky world beat. Kick back and enjoy the ride!
Pause for a second and reflect upon what it must take to be David Byrne's musical director. No pressure. For percussionist Mauro Refosco, it's a gig. A great one, for sure. And he takes it, like he does everything else, in steady rhythm. A Brazilian-born, classically trained drummer, Refosco has been working with Byrne off and on for nearly 30 years. And as “American Utopia” enters the final stage of its Broadway run, we discuss the intricacies of putting on such a dynamic show—wirelessly. We get into his background and his work with Byrne. And we talk a little about Brazilian music and politics. Just a little. We also discuss his beautiful hair. From the early days of Talking Heads, David Byrne has been developing unique and fascinating new ways to present his music to the world. There's no finer example of this than the jaw-dropping American Utopia show, which the NME called “The Best Live Show Of All Time”. Today we are delving inside the process of creating and performing the show from its early touring incarnation through to the wildly successful Broadway run that has just triumphantly resumed at the St James Theatre. I talk to key members of the band and cast about the show's merging of rock concert with modern dance piece and Broadway show, the innovative staging and unique challenges of reconfiguring classic songs for the show, the costumes, memories from the road, celebrity encounters, working with Spike Lee on the film version, how they went from collaborators to family and the challenges and joys of finally bringing the show back a year later than planned. Thank you to cast members Angie Swan, Bobby Wooten, Chris Giarmo, Mauro Refosco and Stéphane San Juan for sharing their insights and stories, to Aussie queen of rock radio Zan Rowe for joining me to break down what makes the show special and publicist Michelle Farabaugh for making the whole thing possible.
Forró In The Dark's music is meant to be played under the cover of night. The band is named after forró, a type of Northeastern Brazil dance music. The New York based Brazilian ex-pats give traditional music an update with jazz, rock, psychedelia, folk and charismatic and attentive rhythms. Since their formation in 2002 (beginning as a birthday entertainment for lead singer, Mauro Refosco), Forró In The Dark has worked with musicians like the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Thom Yorke's Atoms For Peace and David Byrne among others. Their cross-cultural sound takes on new elements on their 2015 album, Forro Zinho: Forro in the Dark Plays Zorn, where the group takes on American avant-garde sax player/composer John Zorn's works with a Brazilian twist. They perform in-studio. Setlist: "Forro Zinho" "Novato" "Life is only real then when I am" For more pictures from the session visit our Tumblr.
Featuring the debut of Erik's new single “Shape of a Monster” featuring Jeff Coffin, Mauro Refosco, and Leftover Salmon; a cut from a groundbreaking new conceptual record by brothers Nick and Patrick Adams; NYC/LA drumming star Mark Guiliana; UK dj legend Nightmares on Wax; and a visit to the Hall of Fame courtesy of Miles Davis, Ella Fitzgerald, Roberta Flack, and Mr. Marvin Gaye.
JOMORO is the brand new project for Joey Waronker and Mauro Refosco, and they're our guests for Episode 62! Both gentlemen are legends in the music industry, having played with artists such as Beck, RHCP, David Byrne and Sir Paul McCartney (just to name a few), and they're both members Atoms For Peace (Thom Yorke's OTHER band). JOMORO have just released their stunning debut record Blue Marble Sky, and we're lucky enough to have both Joey & Mauro on the podcast. In today's episode, we're discussing how the new record came about, the collaborative nature of the project, when exactly the two gentlemen first met and bringing them down to Australia. You can listen to JOMOROs playlist here. You can listen to JOMORO hereYou can find Atarashii Gakko here.JOMORO Instagram: @jomoroJOMORO FB: @jomoroJoey Waronker Instagram: @joeyMauro Refosco Instagram: @mauroThanks again to Joey & Mauro for their time. Together, they make up JOMORO.Blue Marble Sky is a fascinating album, not least because it comes from rhythm-driven minds. There were HEAPS of linguistic tics in this one. Mauro Refosco is David Byrne's percussionist's name. Other things mentioned: Time's End & 'Clocktown' by Theophany (Spotify), Lovers Lane, Immersion (Queensland Music Festival shows I am playing: you can register for my Immersion hotel room gig here http://qmf.org.au/immersion-registration/), Aunty Donna (they seem to make regular appearances on this podcast, I am a big liker of them), Status Anxiety by Alain de Botton, Alan Hampton, Arcade Fire.
