There's never a slow news day in the space and satellite industry and there's a lot to talk about from 2024 — from SES's acquisition of Intelsat, Starlink's commercial wins, challenges with some of the biggest manufacturers, and new launch vehicles coming online. Host Rachel Jewett is joined by fellow Via editors Mark Holmes and Jeff Hill for a discussion of some of the biggest storylines of 2024. The discussion centers around the top storylines from operators, manufacturers, and launchers, and why these are the critical stories that we'll be covering as they continue to develop in 2025.
This week's On Orbit podcast is a topical look at space policy in the U.S. election. Host Rachel Jewett is joined by fellow Via editor Jeff Hill for a conversation with Svetla Ben-Itzhak, assistant professor of Space and International Relations and Deputy Director with the West Space Scholars Program at Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies. Ben-Itzhak recently wrote a piece for The Conversation about the implications of Musk's endorsement of Donald Trump for U.S. space exploration and defense. This is an increasingly pertinent issue as reports from national news outlets like the Associated Press show that Elon Musk donated $75 million to his own political action committee America PAC that is working to elect Trump. Musk has also been floated to lead a government efficiency commission in a Trump White House. Ben-Itzhak gives her main takeaways of space policy during President Biden's presidency and what space policy could look like in a Kamala Harris administration or a second Trump term. The podcast also digs into the idea of Musk working or advising in a second Trump administration and the conflict of interest issues that would bring up. This week Via Satellite editors Jeff Hill and Mark Holmes join the podcast to talk about their trip to Paris for the annual World Space Business Week. The annual September show was at a particularly interesting time this year, a month after the Olympics and just weeks before the U.S. presidential election. One of the key themes from the week is just how much the industry is grappling with SpaceX's dominance and how to compete with SpaceX in launch, satellite communications and even Earth observation with Starshield. There are so many interesting storylines in the works right now with new rockets coming online, satellite operator mergers, and evolving discussion about standards. This episode is sponsored by AvL Technologies, an industry leading manufacturer of multi-band and multi-orbit satellite communications ground terminals for military, government and commercial applications. www.avltech.com/

Time is a finite resource. What is the best way to spend it? Bob Sulentic, CEO of the multibillion-dollar company CBRE explains why he deliberately leaves hours of his workday open for thinking, reading, and being available to his direct reports. That approach may not work for all CEOs. What's important, explains BCG's Jeff Hill, is that CEOs spend time thinking about time. An unexamined calendar is a missed opportunity to become a more effective leader. Will Alex Murdaugh get a new trial? So far the possibility is up in the air, as allegations of jury tampering have been levied against Colleton County Clerk of Court Rebecca (Becky) Hill. Hill has denied any wrongdoing. At the same time Hill's son, Jeff, has been arrested and is facing charges related to wiretapping. This episode of Across The Margin: The Podcast presents an interview with Woodstock, New York via North Carolina singer-songwriter Kenny Roby. Roby is the former lead singer of 6 String Drag, which he formed with bassist Rob Keller in the early 1990s, a band which quickly became one of the more notable bands of the Americana movement. The band's style ranged from old style country with a hint of soul and gospel to rock. While 6 String Drag broke up in the late 1990s, Roby continues to make records and play live shows with the Mercy Filter, which includes Scott McCall of $2 Pistols. Roby has released seven solo albums, his latest album — the focus of the episode — is self-titled and written and recorded in Woodstock, NY. Throughout Kenny Roby, the gifted storyteller embraces the spirits of songwriters who once inhabited the very same hills like Fred Neil, Van Morrison, Tim Hardin, Karen Dalton, Bobby Charles, Levon Helm and, of course, Bob Dylan. Over the album's dozen tracks, Roby — supported by a cast including Daniel Littleton (guitars), Jeff Hill (bass), Tony Leone (drums) and superb guest vocals from Amy Helm and the legendary John Sebastian on harmonica — takes us on a sprawling walk through the neighborhood of his mind. In this episode host Michael Shields and Kenny Roby discuss Kenny Roby's genesis and the themes present in the album. They talk about the outstanding players on the album such as Amy Helm and John Sebastian while exploring how living in Woodstock, New York led to who contributed to the album's enthralling sound. They discuss Roby's friendship and working relationship with Neal Casal and the gifts that deep acquaintanceship still award Roby, and so much more. Episode 42 of Something In The Water welcomes a couple of west Georgia singer-songwriters, DeAnna Verneau and Daniel Parrish, of Flintlock Annie, a self-described grungy Americana band with leanings to country, soul, and blues. DeAnna began her musical journey as a 17-year-old Albany, Georgia vocalist who later worked with another popular local group, Meow Ka-Pow. Daniel was a late bloomer, first getting into guitar in his college years, followed by songwriting, sound production, and finally performing in bands. He hails from Pavo, Georgia, a small town outside of Moultrie and home of the late Cleve Dean, who in the mid-to-late Seventies was Arm-Wrestling Champion of the world. The musical segment features the duo performing a stripped down “Absent Cowboy”, with lyrics written by Jeff Hill, lead vocalist of the screamo group, Machinist; along with the Parrish-penned “Somewhere Alabama”. From their 2022 album, Moonshine Sin, we listen to “War Boys”, a powerful, open-chord, rock and roll number that was cowritten by the two songwriters on the night that Flintlock Annie was born. Episode zero is usually used just for sending out an RSS ping to all of the podcast platforms, like Soundcloud, to let those platforms know there are more episodes on the way. It can be long or short, but episode zero doesn't get much love and attention. If you are a bit nerdy like me, I actually listen to them. So for this episode-zero - Transmission #000 - I'd like to get some ideas and some questions about space, the space business, and how it all relates to defense, up on the mental white-board for you. I got some help from Jeff Hill, the chairman of Satellite, one of the largest - if not the largest - must-attend annual space industry conferences here in the United States. I hope you enjoy the conversation. And thank you for listening, Laura P.S.: You can find Jeff Hill's podcast “On Orbit” here: https://soundcloud.com/user-903466448
Darren answers one of your questions on this episode of the podcast. The question is from Jeff Hill, who asked, "How do you ask more when people feel they are giving all they have? My team has a narrowed focus on their primary job, but this is killing their desire to develop and grow!!" Get more personal mentoring from Darren each day. My writing had progressed over the years and I spent a lot more time writing in 2005 and 2006. Those two years led me to a pretty banner year in 2007, where I had several pieces published and a couple of short films made from my stories. I also had an audio version of one of my stories produced. It was also the year I went to my first World Horror Convention where my short film “Storm” was premiering. Little did I know that “Storm” would be invited later to screen at the Shocklines Film Series in New York City. Along with my own film were films based on stories by Ed Gorman and an up-and-coming writer at the time named Jeff Hill, son of Stephen King, the man who was one of the catalysts for my own writing. It was definitely good karma, or so it seemed.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/houseofmysteryradio. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
We pre-recorded today's conversation with Guy Curtis, Director of Marketing, Business & Industry Training for LFCC Workforce Solutions & his guest Jeff Hill, Quality Assurance Manager for Thermo-Fisher Scientific to talk about Leadership Institute. Guy explained that the program, now in its 10th year, has served 217 leaders and 35 companies in and around the LFCC service region. The Leadership Institute is designed to help a cohort of new and emerging leaders from the business community develop and grow their understanding and application of leadership skills. Participants will take a deep dive into several relevant competency-based leadership topics with dedicated time to collaborate and develop action items to implement in the workplace. Jeff told us about his experience in the program - he's 2015 graduate - and the tools he learned that have guided his career. Taught by experts with more than 15 years' experience, Leadership Institute gives participants the chance to explore how leadership insights and real-world skills can provide relevant illustrations and engaging stories to help organizations deliver the type of long-term results they are capable of delivering. 11 sessions are held on the second Thursday of the month, starting on April 8, 2021, and concluding on February 10, 2022. Each session is 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. and held at various local organizations. It may be too late to register for this program, but Guy explained they are exploring the possibility of adding a second session. He also reminded us that LFCCWS offers many different leadership training opportunities regardless of your leadership level. For more information, visit: lfccworkforce.com/LI
