Where do film festivals stand in a transformed and often fragmented film landscape? What is the underlying value that they can provide and how can we measure and capture that value? In a film ecosystem that often feels siloed, how can festivals become more robust and connected to other parts of the value chain, particularly with distribution? Is there an argument for festivals to work across the year to deliver that value and are there innovative business models or funding venues that can help sustain this activity? These are some of the topics that our expert panel discussed in this discussion as part of the Screenovators Reimagining the Ecosystem series. On this week's spooktacular special episode for October, Felicia & Lauren both take us through a couple of extreme haunted houses! Felicia kicks it off with the grandfather of extreme haunts - Blackout. This notorious NYC/LA-based immersive horror experience, tailored to people's individual fears, was created in 2009 to be the antithesis of the traditional haunted house and has been called “more performance art than haunted house" by its creators. Participants had to sign a liability waiver as Blackout's performers are able to touch and physically interact with the participants. And yet it still pales in comparison to Lauren's pick this week: the infamous McKamey Manor. McKamey Manor was created in San Diego by madman Russ McKamey, who describes it as a "survival horror boot camp experience.” If you beat McKamey and the manor, you receive a $20,000 grand prize. No one has ever won this prize, but participants do have to sign a 40 page waiver. The experience may involve guests being physically assaulted, waterboarded, forced to eat and drink unknown substances, or being bound and gagged, but the list goes on. And as you can imagine much controversy surrounds McKamey Manor and its creator. Listen with caution this week for a very spooky and memorable episode. PS: If you have requests for future episodes or just want to hang out, follow us on Instagram @sinistersisterspodcast

We had the pleasure of interviewing Ariana and the Rose over Zoom video! Ariana and the Rose returns with “Every Body”, her first new music since pre-lockdown and the first glimmer of a sonic evolution steeped in personal perseverance and unbridled joy. In the past, Billboard has called Ariana and the Rose a “musical project specializing in lyrically sincere, sonically enveloping synth-pop”, and with “Every Body” she is fortifying her place in a pop world that desperately needs to dance again.Written and produced alongside longtime collaborator Andy Highmore (his credits include AlunaGeorge & The Knocks), “Every Body” uses its unrelenting beat and hypnotic soundscape to deliver a message of unity & inclusivity to the dance floor. The video (filmed at House of Yes in Brooklyn and directed by the Emmy-winning Jason Sherwood) conjures up pre-COVID memories of dancefloors, late night clubs, and freedom, finding Ariana and the Rose dancing amidst a crowd of nightlife & NYC/LA art world legends, in alphabetical order: Amanda Lepore, Bex, Cakes Da Killa, CT Hedden, The Dragon Sisters, Kandy Muse, Laith Ashley, Love Bailey, Madison Rose, Marizol, Merlot, Rhea Litre, Rify Royalty, Ryan Burke, Spencer Ludwig, Zero Waste DanielIn early spring 2020, Ariana had a whole album of songs ready to release throughout the summer - effervescent, hopeful and carefree. But when COVID-19 shook the world and sent us all inside, she found herself disconnected from the material and ended up scrapping all of it, not thinking it appropriate to celebrate amongst the pandemic and social unrest of the country. As quarantine continued, she started from scratch, writing, composing and recording the music she wanted to hear once the world opened up again and we could once again unite on the dancefloor. “Every Body” is the first taste. The release of “Every Body” follows recent skyrocketing success on TikTok, when a video of a piano-assisted spoken word piece she posted earned an astounding 8 million views on the social media platform in less than a week. The video gained extra exposure when it was shared by the likes of Betches (via Instagram), NYT best-selling author Meena Harris & Tony-nominated actress Laura Benanti. She will also hit the road with Torres this September & October, as well as take the stage at the Treefort Music Festival & Austin City Limits Live (full dates below & here). In the past, Ariana and the Rose has been called “a refreshing burst of authenticity” by LadyGunn, and she has earned acclaim from Consequence of Sound, Paper Magazine, Vice, Time Magazine, Refinery 29, LOGO, and more. She is also the curator of the immersive music and art party “light + space” which has had numerous events across Manhattan & Brooklyn (including a residency at House Of Yes), as well as one-off performances in LA and London. We want to hear from you! What Makes You Click with Kelvin Bulluck

On this episode of What Makes You Click, Kelvin welcomes Maciek Jasik, an award-winning photographer based in NYC and LA that critiques Western society's relationship with nature and identity. Maciek and Kelvin have a very grounded discussion speaking on the personal experiences and psychology that is often behind photography and other forms of artistic expression, noting Maciek's opinion on the most important aspect of creating art. You'll gain insight into Maciek's Polish upbringing, the forming of his identity while integrating with American society, and the mindset of an immigrant that inspires a powerful work ethic. He sheds light on how his love for political science and art converged early in his life, how his time spent living in Japan inspired his photography, and the overwhelm and FOMO that exists in being a professional photographer. Maciek even shares the most important lessons he's learned from shooting portraits, including Ruth Bader Ginsburg and other notable figures. About the Guest:Maciek Jasik is a photographer based in NYC/LA, critiquing Western society's relationship with Nature and exploring ideas of identity, representation and the self while employing color and distortion to re-imagine accepted norms. Connect with Maciek Jasik:Visit his website: www.maciekjasik.com Follow him on Instagram: www.instagram.com/maciekjasik  Connect with What Makes You Click:Visit our website: www.whatmakesyouclick.com Follow us on Instagram: www.instagram.com/whatmakesyouclickpodcast Connect with us on Facebook: www.facebook.com/whatmakesyouclick  People + Resources Mentioned:Gary Winogrand: www.fraenkelgallery.com/artists/garry-winogrand Alex Webb: www.webbnorriswebb.co Daniel Arnold: www.daniel-arnold.org Nobuyoshi Araki: https://ocula.com/artists/nobuyoshi-araki/Gregory Crewdson: www.gagosian.com/artists/gregory-crewdsonPhilip-Lorca diCorcia: www.artnet.com/artists/philip-lorca-dicorcia Watch Nomadland on Hulu: www.hulu.com/nomadland-movieFrancis Bacon: www.francis-bacon.com Deeply-Ordered Chaos: www.maciekjasik.com/Deeply-Ordered-Chaos

You get super excited to work on a new idea….you know this will change everything. You write down the steps, you commit to it! You even tell people for the added accountability! You schedule in the time for it, and then…….you can’t seem to get traction….you spend hours working in and around your idea but not ON your idea. Sound familiar?   Why? Because you’re getting stuck in the shallow end. It’s a principal one of my coaches discussed years ago I hadn’t heard of, so I went down the google deep dive. And then realized why I so often felt BUSY but not productive.   Shallow Work - Doesn’t create new value, can be performed while distracted, sometimes considered busy work. Steven Covey would consider these either urgent but not important, or even not urgent, not important. Think of the red email notification.   Deep Work - tasks that create new value and are difficult!!! They need to be done without distraction and they will push your brain and creativity to the limit!   This deep work is energetic equivalent of lifting a car off of a baby ….things that don’t seem possible are done! It’s how I created and launched my podcast the week before my daughter was born! It was a combination of an impending deadline ….motivation...and removing ALL distractions. I basically put myself on maternity leave and put up my out of office email response.   Deep work is what allowed us to create Brand Camp Retreats in a WEEKEND!!! We holed up at a cozy house in Carmel and spent more than 16 hours working on avatars, possible products and content that is SO good, 90% of it has stayed in place through two years + 6 live events.   The hard part about deep work? You need a few hours designated to devote! That’s hours of total focus, no distractions…..just a few stretch, water or meditation breaks!   And the reality of working from home is that there are kids or laundry or dishes or mail or cleaning your desk or a million other distractions to pull you into the shallow end!   Calendar it. That includes time, location and description. Distraction FREE environment: library or private room Make attainable action steps…..think of it like a navigation system. Lead measures, like how many hours spent, steps accomplished. Measure it - How can you track your productivity? Bathroom/food/internet. Plan ahead Give yourself a break….or two. Phone on airplane mode Social Media + Communication Detox Cave Days - where you can do ALL of these things….and PAY for it! Why pay? Because someone FORCES you to be accountable!! Because being around others doing the same thing is invigorating! Caveday.org - locations in NYC + LA!   But even if you aren’t there, you can meet up with a few friends and fellow entrepreneurs to do this! My friend Dr. Sarah, who owns @helpingbabiessleep, comes over once a week and we do a deep dive. We chat for a few minutes, then just work across from each other in silence. We can accomplish more in an hour then I normally get done in several at my desk.   Cave day ideas? It could be your BIG ideas…..creating a course, a business plan for your side hustle idea, writing a blog, finishing a paper OR it could be something that just requires a time block and will create space in your life, like organizing your google drive, doing your Christmas cards or unsubscribing from emails. Either way, you’re going to come out of it feeling lighter!   So tomorrow, I have a self imposed cave day at the local library - finishing the editing of my book! This morning I was 74.0 and things were getting a little hard so the ‘diet' ends today. This is the 4th time I've done a mini cut but the first without any Calorie tracking. This result took place over a 35-day non-tracking fat loss period with zero Calorie or macro tracking. In total, about 3.5 kilograms was lost via what was honestly very sub-par adherence levels. Natalie Kuhn: Life Lessons from The Vice President of The Class By Taryn Toomey Natalie Kuhn is taking over the world, one sweaty body and open heart at a time. She is the Vice-President and founding teacher of The Class By Taryn Toomey. The Class by TT is gaining cult like status among devotees of "push through the pain" body/heart/soul work. But it’s so much more than that really, and Natalie explains exactly what that is. But not before giving us the details of her trajectory, from her post-NYU days as a dancer on David Bynre’s world wide tour at 23, to how she came to The Class (hint: it had no name back then) and now, her rise to a corporate position, commuting back and forth to NYC-LA, holding down a marriage, a home, a dog and her sanity. How does she do it? Listen and find out. Oh, she’s also the most delightful soul and I feel honored and lucky to have had this time with Natalie. I have a feeling she’s going to be on the cover of Forbes in a few years. #Girlbosses take note! @thisisnatalie The Class by TT This episode is brought to you buy the insanely incredible LIVE SPRING WATER.
