Joey Waronker holds a deep knowledge of studio drumming engrained in him from a young age. From sitting in the drum booth with Gadd & Porcaro to forging his own unique style and impeccable touch, he's one of LA's busiest drummers.
Joining me today is American drummer and producer Joey Waronker. Joey has played for some legendary names througout his career so far including Beck, R.E.M. Roger Waters, the supergroup Atoms For Peace featuring Flea from The Red Hot Chili Peppers and Thom Yorke from Radiohead. Paul McCartney, Norah Jones, Leonard Cohen and many more! Join us as we pick through Joeys' spectacular career so far including a large chunk about Roger Waters and a very long time on the road and how this affects family life with a wife and young son back at home. We talk about his recent performance with Beck and the Boston Pops Orchestra and how dynamics play a huge part in making this a success (in my opinion Joey is one of the most dynamic drummers around today). Joeys' British affiliation doesnt end with Roger Waters though, in late 23' he recorded an album with Liam Gallagher & John Squire that was released inMarch 24' to critical acclaim, he tells us about the experience of recording and touring with these two giants of the UK music scene. Huge thanks to Joey for taking the time to do this during a particularly crazy time! looking forward to part 2!
Ryan Gruss “The Fantasty Football of Music Making” Ryan's journey in the music business began after graduating from The Berklee College of Music in 2000 with a degree in Musical Performance for Drums, and then moving to New York City to begin his "career" in the real world. It was during his second week at Atlantic when Ryan was approached by the HR department, asking if he was interested in becoming Ahmet Erteguns' (the legendary Founder and CEO of Atlantic) assistant. His mind was blown and he instantly accepted the position. In 2010, Ryan launched The Loop Loft and began recording other musicians and treating it like a record label, providing the artists with royalties from the sales of each loop pack. Word began to spread amongst the studio musician community, and a roster of legendary musicians like Omar Hakim, Joey Waronker, Matt Chamberlain began to form and quickly grow. For the next 8 years, Ryan continued to organically build The Loop Loft, adding more artists and content on a weekly basis. Partnerships with companies like Ableton, Native Instruments, BandLab and PreSonus were formed. Guitar Center also began to sell products from The Loop Loft. The company was now the top-selling source for loop and samples, generating millions of dollars of revenue each year. It was a career and a company that Ryan had never dreamed of or anticipated, but he had finally found his musical North Star. Ryan left Native Instruments in 2020 and formed Yurt Rock, literally inside of his Yurt studio in the hills of LA. But with the COVID pandemic grinding studio work to a halt, Ryan decided to take the time and move his family to Nashville, a place that many consider the music capital of the world. It was time for a fresh start. With dozens of the world's top musicians, Yurt Rock has quickly become the ultimate source for producers, engineers and songwriters seeking not only loops and samples, but also custom BATTERY/MASCHINE kits, Ableton Live Packs, Logic Sessions, multitracks and much more.

Chris Thile’s Song of the Week for October 26, 2019: “Mutton and Strawberries.” The band: Chris Thile, Rachael Price, Mike Elizondo, Armand Hirsch, Gabriel Kahane, Jeremy Kittel, Joey Waronker. — Lyrics: What hath God wrought Of strength unfelt Gifts neglected And love withheld What hath God wrought (x3) Lucretia left the world without a fight Father left it clutching the handle of a knife His memory never failing to give that knife a twist All has led to this: Mutton— My children scattered like so many seeds Separated from one another and from me All my colleagues snickering at Samuel Morse the Scientist All has led to this: Mutton— (x2) Dark magic or miracle I don’t care It’s wonderful Listen, America’s about to bare her soul And maybe her teeth as well It’s a sound To behold Good or bad only someone else’s time will tell —and strawberries And a wire to connect the world A wire to remind it That nothing can become itself ‘Til something else defines it One wire to connect the world One wire to remind it That nothing can become itself ‘Til something else defines it Now a ghost of wire haunts this world A ghost of wire drives it Unto the need to know itself And with that knowledge binds it One ghost of wire haunts this world One ghost of wire drives it Unto the need to know itself And with that knowledge binds it ‘Til we use it to connect the world And let the world remind us That none of us become ourselves While someone else defines us
Joey Waronker is an elite studio & touring drummer. He is the touring drummer for Roger Waters, Beck, a full time band member of Thom Yorke's super group Atoms For Peace, and has also spent time as Smashing Pumpkins and R.E.M. He is also the son of Lenny Waronker who ran Warner Music Group for many years. Episode Highlights // + Growing up in the nascent phase of Pacific Palisades outside of LA, growing up in his father's large shadow, who ran Warner music group. + Drumming for Beck, REM, Smashing Pumpkins, Thom Yorke, Roger Waters and more… + Beck's blended sonics and his own proclivities aligning. + Almost being offered a band spot with REM. + Working with Smashing Pumpkins as they were breaking up. + The challenges of being rich and famous for big bands. + Beck not being able to book a show and sleeping on couches because no one wanted to book him. + How his own indie band didn't work out and it still can feel upsetting. + How Joey got the gig on the massive Roger Waters tour. + Why you have to be a narcissist to front a band.
Joey Waronker is a drumming legend. He has played with Roger Waters, Thom Yorke, Flea, Air, Beck, R.E.M. and that’s just naming a few! His list of credits is a veritable who’s who of the last 20 years in popular music and I’ve been a huge fan of a whole bunch of the records he has played on. We sat down to discuss being a hired gun, parenting, Steve Martin, the record biz and I’m pretty sure we talk about drumming for a wee bit too. Loren not only appeared in Beach Blanket Bingo, Bikini Beach, and Muscle Beach Party, but the prolific '60s performer was the "Dr Pepper Girl," the featured singer on Shindig!, and guest-starred on both Batman and The Monkees. She left entertainment at the height of her fame in 1968 to start and raise a family, and while she recorded occasionally in the '80s, didn't return to music in a big way until 2009. Additionally, she's the mother of that dog's Anna Waronker and Joey Waronker, drummer for Atoms for Peace. Her first book, Pop Sixties: Shindig!, Dick Clark, Beach Party, and Photographs from the Donna Loren Archive, was released last year, and a second edition is out now. We talked about all of this and more in a career-spanning interview.

Joey Waronker possesses a powerful groove and a gift for nuance and shading. These attributes--combined with a deep understanding of production and a knack for electronic percussion--are what distinguish him as one of the leading drummers of the modern paradigm. He tells Joe about growing up in a musical family; studying with the legendary Freddie Gruber; his love of the punk label, SST Records; overcoming his neuroses through therapy; and working with artists like Beck and REM. He also answers listener questions.
Whoever said that nice guys finish last had obviously never been to the American Midwest. Plenty of heartland dwellers accomplish amazing things in the world without being jerks, and the Chicago-based duo, FinleyKnight, exemplifies the idea that affability can produce great music. FinleyKnight is comprised of two brothers, John and Connor Detjen, who create their music with a fearless approach that incorporates any and all technological accouterments. There are drums and guitars aplenty, but they share the expansive sonic space of FinleyKnight with loops, drum machines, synthesizers and anything else that the composers can get their hands on. The result informs the listener that these guys grew up in a mashup world in which they are natives to the types of modern technology used to make music in entirely new ways. Working with producer/drummer Joey Waronker on their eponymous full-length debut album brought a new focus on rhythm to FinleyKnight's sound, so thumping, ticking beats keep the soundscapes from getting bogged down in dreamy synth-land. The FinleyKnight album will be available everywhere on May 6th, 2014, and it is a triumph in the realm of nice guys making good – and making good music.

Eleni Mandell has managed to carve out a decent career for herself in the last 15 years. She's a native of Los Angeles, and that geographical good fortune afforded her the opportunity to immerse herself in the rich musical scene of Southern California during her formative years. Now that she's been at it awhile, fans might not make the connection between her elegantly simple songs adorned with acoustic guitars and the underground punk and rock shows she grew up frequenting. Along the way, she has worked with music-savant producer Jon Brion, guitarists Nels Cline and Tony Gilkyson, drummer/producer Joey Waronker and the back up band on her new record, Let's Fly A Kite, was borrowed from none other than Nick Lowe. Over the years, Mandell has been compared to such diverse artists as PJ Harvey, X, Patsy Cline and Tom Waits and her life and career have continued to evolve. In addition to guitars and merch, Mandell now takes along a set of twins when she hits the road, and the shift in perspective is evident on Let's Fly A Kite. Motherhood has brought a new-found focus to Mandell's music because there simply isn't the time to sit around and wait for inspiration to strike when little people need to be clothed, fed and entertained. The evolution is a logical one, and it suits her music just fine. The twelve songs on Let's Fly A Kite are playful and focused and her evolution as an artist has been welcomed by critics, fans and the artist herself.
