Hear favorite live performances from the WNYC studios this year: music by Indigenous two-spirit song carrier and activist Jeremy Dutcher; electronically-enhanced piano-based work by German-Swiss duo Grandbrothers; and Irish garage-punk band Sprints. Also, there's the quiet thrill and expressive song-play of Argentinian vocalist Sofía Rei and Peruvian bass player Jorge Roeder. It's that time of the year when we look back at the past twelve months and realize that Jazz continues to be possibly the only thing that doesn't let us down, while the world is getting crazier by the hour. The playlist features Idris Ackamoor; Maria Pia de Vito; Todd Sickafoose; John Zorn; Henri Texier; Billy Mohler; Thandi Ntuli, Carlos Niño; Kris Davis; Sofia Rei, Jorge Roeder; Pierrick Pédron, and Gonzalo Rubalcaba. This time we try to bring you jazz that refuses to respect boundaries, or "Somethin' Else from Somewher' Else". Here is an episode illustrates how jazz may well be the most welcoming music genre there is, perfectly able to blend with musical traditions from all over the world, from Native American and Latin American roots to Fado, Flamenco, Baroque British music and more. The playlist features Zenophilia, Dean Bowman; Nicole Johänntgen [pictured]; Henri Texier; Robbie Robertson; Tiziano Tononi; Leïla Martial, Valentin Ceccaldi; Sofia Rei, Jorge Roeder; Emilio Solla, Antonio Lizana; Antonio Lizana; Júlio Resende Fado Jazz; Nils Berg Cinemascope. Julian Lage is truly a guitarist like no other. He's insanely creative, prolific, has unbelievable technical facility, but also plays with incredible taste, tone and restraint. He grew up around the bay area of California and was a child prodigy who started getting noticed when he was just a little tyke. There's even a movie about him from that time called “Jules At Eight” (when he was eight!), and he played at the Grammys when he was 12, which is where Gary Burton, the incredible vibraphone player heard him, and asked him to join his band. Julian played with Burton for the better part of a decade, but also spent time playing and collaborating with John Zorn, Nels Cline, Dave Douglas, Charles Lloyd, as well as David Grisman and Chris Eldridge from over in the bluegrass world. He's been releasing solo albums since 2009, and over the last year released a full-length album that is absolutley spectacular called “View With A Room”, and then some songs that were essentially out-takes from that album but took on a life of their own came out more recently, and that's a beautiful new EP called “The Layers”. He has this incredible trio now that I think is one of the great American ensembles - Jorge Roeder is an incredible bassist and Dave King is the drummer, who some will know from the Bad Plus. Julian is an incredible talent, and very thoughtful human and musician and we had a great conversation about all these aspects of his career, nerded out on guitars, and got deep into music! Bassist Jorge Roeder is from Peru; vocalist Sofía Rei is originally from Argentina. Both of them are based here in New York, and have worked with a broad range of New York musicians (John Zorn, Bobby McFerrin, Julian Lage, and many others); and that experience is reflected in the ease with which they move between Latin, jazz, and experimental music. (Between them they've worked in classical music, jazz, avant-garde, Latin music, metal, and electronics.) Their brand new album together, called Coplas Escondidas, is just the two of them – voice and bass – and it's a collection of songs with a variety of quietly thrilling textures and dramatic melodies. Sofía Rei and Jorge Roeder play in-studio. Set list: 1. Días de Sitio 2. Prestados 3. Negro Sobre Blanco
When it comes to jazz virtuoso Julian Lage, you'd be hard-pressed to find an electric guitarist who uses less gear. “Any time I've [used too much equipment], there's an awkwardness where I'm still grappling with the fact that I play here,” he says, gesturing to his guitar, then gesturing to his amp, “but the sound comes out there.” He continues, “It sounds like a joke, but it's been a struggle for me. Any time there's layers or filters or anything, I feel dissociated.” Of course, Lage's rig, which buoys his clean, no-frills tone, makes sense for a musician like himself—whose playing often comes across fluidly, and as gently as his personality. For Lage, that fluidity stems from his conception of music as a language. “I think that the way people speak is often more unfettered,” Lage told Premier Guitar in 2021. “There might not be an obvious correlation between the way people speak in a lecture and the notes on the guitar. But it's just a little stretch of the imagination to see that those are pitches, those are rhythms, those are phrases."On View with a Room, Lage's second release on the hallowed Blue Note Records, he's offering a fresh, bold continuation of the conversation he's created over the years. The album features his latest ensemble, made up of himself, bassist Jorge Roeder, and drummer Dave King—but this time, he's added the legendary Bill Frisell. Together, the musicians help to expand Lage's body of work with performances of 10 of his original compositions. While on tour for the album, Lage invited PG's John Bohlinger to the soundcheck before his show at Brooklyn Bowl inn Nashville to share his insights into why he likes a straightforward rig and “honest” tone. In the interview, Lage elaborates on his three main guitars (his Nachocaster, Collings signature, and '55 Les Paul), explains why he prefers low volume on his amps, and offers a remarkably brief tour of his pedalboard.Brought to you by D'Addario XS Strings.

When Julian Lage plays guitar, it's hard not to get swept up in it. His relationship with the instrument is natural and contagious. Maybe that's because it's been with him for most of his life. When he was just 8 years old, Julian was the subject of an Academy Award nominated documentary film called Jules at Eight. Before he entered his teens, he had already performed with Carlos Santana and jazz vibraphonist Gary Burton. While still in highschool he was a faculty member of the Stanford Jazz Workshop. Lage plays like someone in love. Despite his productive personal relationship with singer-songwriter Margret Glaspy - who produced his forthcoming album on Blue Note View with a Room - perhaps the deepest love affair of his life may in fact be with the guitar itself. In this conversation from last year, we talked about his 2021 release Squint, which Glaspy produced with Armand Hirsch - his first on Blue Note, which he recorded with drummer Dave King and bassist Jorge Roeder. He told me how he traversed those murky waters of youthful exceptionalism and came out on the other side - with more sensitivity, to the music, to his audience, and to himself. During the course of the conversation, Julian also described the connection between the artist and the audience and how he thinks about notes as having the weight of speech. “I want it to feel like I'm talking to you when I play.” The Third Story is a collaboration with WBGO Studios. www.wbgo.org/studios

During the course of the conversation, Julian also described the connection between the artist and the audience and how he thinks about notes as having the weight of speech. “I want it to feel like I'm talking to you when I play.” www.third-story.com www.patreon.com/thirdstorypodcast www.julianlage.com/

The show where we uncover the stories, processes, and worldviews behind NYC’s most artful and creative musicians. Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/brave-sound-podcast/id1537645722 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/5ByvBpLEwvf1FkyZr40d11 Today's Guest: Shai Maestro (1987) is one of the most promising and talented pianists of his generation. Since his debut with his own trio in 2011, Shai has shaped a strong and unique personal identity and has portrayed an incredible musical fluidity, making Shai and his band one of the most powerful and harmonious groups in the jazz today. 2018 marked an important year for Shai, signing with major jazz label ECM and recording his first album “The Dream Thief” there, featuring his trio, but also him as a solo-pianist. Introspective, lyrical, virtuosic and differentiated. In its review of ‘The Dream Thief’, All About Jazz spoke of “a searching lyrical atmosphere, emotional eloquence and communal virtuosity that serves the music.” All of which also applies to ‘Human’, Shai’s latest release on ECM, where Maestro’s outgoing, highly-communicative band with fellow Israeli Ofri Nehemya on drums and Peruvian bassist Jorge Roeder becomes a quartet with the inspired addition of US trumpeter Philip Dizack. Shai’s expansive pianism is well-matched by Dizack’s alert, quick-thinking approach to improvising. And, as ever, Maestro is taking the music forward while also respecting its sense of tradition. ‘Human’ was recorded at Studios la Buissonne in the South of France in February 2020, and produced by Manfred Eicher. Argentinian pianist Emilio Solla calls his band The Tango Jazz Conspiracy, but that's about the only genre label you'll find him using for his music -- and he's not even sure what "tango jazz" really means. On his album Bien Sur! (Fresh Sound, 2010), Solla is joined by A-list musicians such as Chris Cheek, Richie Barshay, Victor Prieto and Jorge Roeder. In this interview, Solla talks about his early years in Argentina and his subsequent move to Spain; how Astor Piazzolla paved the way for Solla and his contemporaries; and how drum master Billy Hart came to be a guest on Solla's album.
