Discover the enlightening journey of Meghan Tschanz, the author of 'Women Rising: Learning to Listen, Reclaiming Our Voice'. Meghan takes us from her conservative evangelical upbringing to her eye-opening World Race mission trip experiences, which exposed the harsh reality of global oppression of women. Get ready to hear stories of patriarchal standards in Kenya and the sexual exploitation of women in the Philippines, and learn how Meghan found herself questioning the gender norms taught in her church community. Our discussion moves from Meghan's personal experiences to a broader exploration of biblical womanhood, gender roles, and liberation within biblical narratives. Together, we dissect the intersections of feminism and Christianity and consider how our understanding of scripture can impact our views on gender equality. Tune in as we scrutinize the damaging effects of purity culture within the evangelical church and discuss the complexities of biblical sexual ethics in the modern world. Meghan shares her insights on how the church's complicity in historical atrocities and exclusion of individuals who support women's leadership has hindered this transformation. We look towards a future where the “People's Church” grows, with individuals leading the change, and question the power dynamics that dictate who gets to be considered a Christian. Finally, join us as we redefine success at life's end and discuss the balance between justice work and the pursuit of joy, using the Enneagram as a tool for self-understanding and embracing joy in justice work. In this episode, you will hear: Discovering the oppression of women The struggle and importance of feminism Biblical womanhood Purity culture and women's submission Reevaluating Christian sexual ethics Change and hope in Evangelicalism Defining a successful life with joy and justice Follow and Review: We'd love for you to follow us if you haven't yet. Ep 49 Women are the largest group of oppressed people on the planet, and that is something we should all care about. We talk with author and podcaster Meghan Tschanz about something that we should all be talking about: the inequity that women face. When we empower and listen to women, we make the world a more loving and equal place. Too often the Church is not concerned with the inequity of women or merely gives lip service to it. We cover some big topics like purity culture, raising kids with healthy sexual ethics, and the link between violence against women and patriarchal societies. But despite all of that, our conversation was full of hope. When we lift up women we all win. This is a conversation we should all be having and we are grateful for people like Meghan leading the charge. You can find Meghan's work www.meghantschanz.com Meghan is on Instagram @meghantschanz

Did you know that women in this country continue to experience discrimination and disadvantage in nearly every sphere of life? A 2018 survey named the United States among the ten most dangerous countries in the world for women and the World Economic Forum recently ranked the United States 53rd out of 153 nations for gender parity. In this episode we talk about the Equal Rights Amendment and who it is a crucial step toward greater gender justice in the U.S and ending gender discrimination in this country. Human rights lawyer and faith leader, Allyson McKinney, and author and Speaker Meghan Tschanz talk about the history of the ERA, why it has still not been published as the 28th amendment, why it is desperately needed, some of the myths and opposition to it and what you can do to help ratify the ERA to the U.S. Constitution
Meghan Tschanz--author of Women Rising and host of the Faith and Feminism Podcast--joins Jonny to talk about ALL THE THINGS including: the Equal Rights Amendment, her personal story, the dangers of Christian patriarchy, her hope for the "people's church", and how she finds rest in the midst of the chaos.
What exactly is the Equal Rights Amendment, and why is it important? Well, this episode is going to answer that question! It may come as a shock that the United States does not yet include equal protection for women in its constitution. Though the US has long been purported to be one of the leaders in gender equality, it is actually one of only 28 countries in the world without women included it its constitution, and ranks 51 in gender parity after it's neighbors Canada and Mexico. The ERA is a constitutional amendment that would explicitly bar the government from any form of discrimination on the basis of sex. How do systems of injustice hold women back? How does messaging surrounding gender roles impact women everywhere, from sex trafficking to situations of perceived privilege? We discuss these topics in this episode, along with:Breaking harmful narratives that have oppressed women How gender role narratives perpetuate human traffickingWhy emotional health can prevent abuse and violenceLearning to listen so we can actually helpHow we can be unknowingly complicit in the harm of othersThe correlation between lack of options and traffickingHow to have freedom within our relationships and gender rolesPower differentials that drive sexual assault and traffickingHow systems of injustice are all interconnectedBe sure to check out her podcast, Faith and Feminism and her book, Women Rising, available everywhere!
This week, Josh and Alison are thrilled to share a recent interview with Meghan Tschanz. Meghan is a former missionary, host of the Faith and Feminism podcast, blogger, and author of the recently-released book Women Rising: Learning to Listen, Reclaiming Our Voice. In her book (and the interview) Meghan draws connections between the injustices she witnessed against women around the globe with damaging power differentials and patriarchal norms that she witnessed in her evangelical upbringing. This is an interview that challenges our assumptions and calls us to see the ways these systems work together to further abuses in our world.
The Woman Beings sit down to discuss the topic of "deconstruction" in depth, and share their own personal journeys of deconstruction. In much of the Christian world, there's not much room for asking questions, doubt, or uncertainty about one's faith. For most Christians, deconstruction is almost synonymous with leaving the faith. They share their own questions, how the journey can be lonely, the importance of having a trustworthy community to process with, and how to keep close to Jesus in the process. About Meghan Fresh out of college, hating her job, and searching for meaning, Meghan Tschanz left everything to join a mission trip around the globe, and quickly witnessed oppression experienced by women that she never thought possible. Over the next several years, she befriended women around the globe who had survived sex trafficking, female genital mutilation, and violence so extreme Meghan wondered at the woman's survival. Through listening to their stories, Meghan started to notice a pattern that pointed to systems of injustice that held women back―systems that her childhood church had taught and in which she was complicit. She was changed. Returning to the United States, Meghan became keenly aware of how the teachings and messaging surrounding women in her own upbringing were part of the problem. In the process, she began to find her voice, one that spoke out against injustice and moved her into tension with her Christian community. Women Rising is Meghan Tschanz's personal journey of transformation. But it's also a Christian blueprint for anyone wanting to confront injustice against women while pointing to a biblical standard for gender equality. With humility and grit, Meghan calls Christian women to amplify their voices for righteousness―and she calls the church to listen. Meghan Tschanz is a writer, speaker, podcast host, and former missionary who is passionate about empowering women and reclaiming feminism for the Christian faith. For years she worked as a missionary with sexually exploited and oppressed women. After befriending them and hearing their stories, they taught her what no one else could have: how to take a stand. As she spoke out against the atrocious injustices they endured, ranging from rape to being beaten within an inch of their lives to worse, she started to notice a link. Their oppression, while more life-threatening and extreme, had the same roots as her own.⠀In Meghan’s new book, “Women Rising” she shares her personal journey of transformation. She not only examines her own upbringing in "the Church" that led to her feeling "less than" but also her own complacency as a white woman upholding an unjust system. Meghan's book serves as a Christian blueprint for anyone wanting to confront injustice against women while pointing to a biblical standard for gender equality. She boldly calls Christian women to amplify their voices for righteousness—and she calls the church to listen.

Wayyy overdue, today I'm sharing my story. How I came to found an AI tech company to fight human trafficking without a tech or business background. Unlike most times I get to tell parts of this story, this is very unfiltered… it's what you would hear if we were just sitting down for drinks and you asked about my story. I cover how I first learned about human trafficking as a teenager, formative people in my life like a quadriplegic teacher who changed how I looked at life and helping others, my time in college, finding my major, etc., and how these things came together to motivate me to seek purpose in my career. Thank you Newsstand Studio at 1 Rockefeller Plaza for providing a place for me to record this episode for y’all! No more Brooklyn closet recording!!! Feminism: the fight for equality between men and women. Did you grow up thinking feminism was bad? That the word “feminism” was a dirty word? That your faith had no space for feminism? That women called to serve men? This week, I’m talking with Meghan Tschanz— writer, speaker, and host of the Faith and Feminism Podcast— all about feminism. We talk about the things we gre up believing about women that we no longer believe, how we grew to become (and call ourselves) feminists, and why Jesus is a feminist. The Narratives We’ve Been Told Not only does growing up in an Evangelical context shape the way you view your role as a woman, but so does society in general. Meghan talks about how as a kid she was taught that being competitive and strong was not her role and that her body was bad and shameful. She remembers thinking, “I don’t think this is God, but this is all I know.” And she accepted it because she didn’t want to be seen as un-Christian. “The text doesn’t ever say, ‘Well, men have a little more of the God image and women need to keep quiet.’” - Kat Harris Changing the Narratives Meghan shares how women can be protectors, providers, and pursuers. We all love a good “the way they met” story. Meghan shares hers and I open up about my frustration in striking out constantly— always kissing the frogs and never getting the prince. I get honest about wanting a partner who will be a provider and how I have challenged myself to dig below the surface. Being a stay-at-home mom doesn’t mean you’re not a feminist. “Overall, if we’re looking at the history of the world, if we’re looking at what is ailing women today, it’s a lack of choices, it’s being forced into a box.” - Meghan Tschanz Women of the Bible We unpack Mary and Martha’s stories in the Bible. Junia’s name was changed to Junius to fit the gender roles. Esther disobeyed and didn’t conform to gender roles. Bottom line: women are very much in charge, empowered, and leading nations. “The most damaging phrase is: it's always been done this way” - Grace Hopper Growing up, what did you learn about being a woman? From church? Culture? Home? School? How have those narratives shaped how you view yourself + your experience today? What do you think of the idea that Jesus could be a feminist? What do you think feminism is? Write down your answers and process them. Be willing to go on a journey. Resources Keep up with Meghan at MeghanTschanz.com and on IG @meghantschanz. When you hear the word feminism, what pictures come up in your mind? Women burning their bras? Fighting for their pro-choice rights? Well, those images don't truly encapsulate what feminism is. It's actually quite a bit simpler than all that - feminism means equality between men and women. That's what Meghan Tschanz is here to spread the message on. Through her speaking and writing, she is dispelling the lies and myths that society has been feeding us all this time, and I just love how she is spicing things up! To view the full show notes, continue reading here or visit my website: www.heartfelthippie.com When I first came across Meghan's podcast - Faith and Feminism - I just knew I had to meet her. These are two topics that I have a passion for and I wanted to see just how they go hand-in-hand. Because of her experiences as a former missionary working with sexually exploited women, Meghan has learned that so many of the oppression issues that females face are because of power dynamics and inequality between men and women. In a culture (and sometimes a church) that wants to tell her to sit down and shut up, Meghan believes that God has told her differently. She believes that Jesus himself was a feminist who empowered women, so she's on a mission to spread that message. No matter where your faith lies, I know you'll learn a lot from Meghan today and enjoy what she has to share. Even if you don't agree with everything we discuss, I ask that you approach the conversation with an open mind and be willing to learn from someone who has a different perspective than you. In Part 1, Meghan and I are discussing her background a little further, and she also educates me on what feminism truly is and why it should matter to all of us. Yep, all of us - no matter your gender, locale, or religion! That means that this episode isn't just for women - she'll explain how men can be a part of feminism, too, and we even start diving into hot topics like sexual assault. Next week on Part 2, we discuss some of these topics further and we also chat about what it's been like for Meghan to receive pushback on this mission that a lot of people have a problem with. After hearing what she has to say today, I don't think that will be any of you! So listen in and get ready to be pumped up from this girl on fire.
