We have less time. We're more self aware and probably more self conscious. We've been conditioned to believe that making friends "just happens", when it actually takes intentionality and effort. Also, many of us experience something called the "liking gap" which means we tend to underestimate how much people like us.So on today's episode, we cut through the BS and have a vulnerable conversation about friendship.Let's get in touch! To connect, follow on IG @sociallymisguidedpodcastIf you feel you know someone who would be an amazing guest for our show, send us an email at sociallymisguidedpocast@gmail.comRemember to subscribe to this show and share on social media. And so between messages from "anti" aging commercials and lack of representation of women 30-60 in media, we feel ashamed or like we've failed when we get older and don't look the way we did 10, 20, 30 years ago. But if we take a step back, look at everything we've gained with each passing year.So that leads me to ask: when we focus on chasing the fountain of youth, what do we lose in the process?Let's get in touch! To connect, follow on IG @sociallymisguidedpodcastIf you feel you know someone who would be an amazing guest for our show, send us an email at sociallymisguidedpocast@gmail.comRemember to subscribe to this show and share on social media. There's little talk or education about how our cycles are so much more than just “that time of the month”.  And there's stigma around fluctuating emotions, seasons of less productivity and a general disregard for the fact that our periods are only one part of our monthly cycle.I've definitely felt frustration with not being able to show up the same way every single day.But if we can start to think about ourselves as cyclical beings and understand the strength in each of the four phases in our cycle, we can start leveraging that power in our daily lives.  As Carrie puts it, we can "fight the patriarchy" and normalize turning away from hustle culture.Today's episode takes a deep dive into menstruation and our cyclical nature. And educating us on this topic is Carrie McKinnon. Carrie is the Chief Executive Menstruator at 28ish. Carrie lived abroad for most of her adult life, co-founding two companies in the languages sector before moving back to her hometown, Atlanta, GA in 2019. Through her journey as an educator and entrepreneur and with years of corporate experience before that, Carrie discovered the power in leveraging her monthly hormonal cycle in work, relationships, and self-care.This discovery of her cyclical nature led her to seeking training as a menstruality mentor and founding 28ish, an organization dedicated to educating women on the power of their cyclical nature and its ability to transform their lives. To connect with Carrie:http://www.28ish.comCheck out The 28ish PodcastFollow our IGFollow our TikTokLet's get in touch! To connect, follow on IG @sociallymisguidedpodcastIf you feel you know someone who would be an amazing guest for our show, send us an email at sociallymisguidedpocast@gmail.comRemember to subscribe to this show and share on social media. How do you feel about social labels? In high school, maybe your label elevated your social status, or maybe it made you feel like you weren't part of the group. But if we assign too much significance to labels, even the seemingly positive ones, they can become limitations.Today, we look at how labels play out in society, how labelling someone prevents us from seeing the whole picture, and how we can crumble under the pressure of living up to these labels. To connect, follow along on IG @sociallymisguidedpodcast.

Gender Bias in Clinical Research with Bridget Chapital

We need more diversity in clinical research. In order to create innovative new medications and cutting edge treatments for disease, we have to ensure that diversity is represented on both the clinical and participant side. On today's episode we talk with special guest, Bridget Chapital, about how when males are the default participant, and represent the majority of researchers on a given project, we only get half the picture. Sex, gender, body size, race, age and medical history impact how we react to medication/treatment in terms of side effect, efficacy and dosage. So if we want to make advances in medicine for the general public, we need diversity and representation across the board. We also discuss how pregnant women are largely left out of clinical trials and how that is a disservice to that population, and how important it is for young kids to be exposed to education about careers within the research field.Bridget, a mom of three, is a clinical research professional with two decades of industry experience. She has her Bachelor of Science degree from Baylor University and a Master's degree in Health Education from the University of Houston. She strives to close the cultural and communication gaps to increase diversity in medical research.Bridget is also passionate about mentorship and education, which is why in 2019, she founded the Hypothesis Haven Science Club. This is the first and only medical science program for elementary aged children that provides early exposure to life science careers. In this program, kids are taught about the steps that scientists take to discover, treat, and cure illnesses. To connect with Bridget, follow along on social @clintrialsladyTo learn more about the Hypothesis Haven Science Club, check out:Instagram @HHSciClubFacebook/twitter @HypothesisHavenhttps://lnk.bio/HHSciClubFor more Socially Misguided, follow on IG @sociallymisguidedpodcast.

TW: Gun violence, sexual assaultDear America, get well soon. We live in a country that doesn't pay a livable wage, where people don't have access to affordable health and mental health care, where early childhood programs cost more than caregiver's salaries, and where guns are more accessible than baby formula. And because of all that, we have a gun violence epidemic.Today's episode is in response to the Uvalde, TX school shooting and it is a difficult one. On this episode we talk about the multilayered, contributing factors to gun violence in our country. Wide spread gun violence is possible because of weak gun control laws, and it is a symptom of our country's broken systems and misplaced priorities.
